"Will Dad be home when we get there?" I ask Mum thoughtfully in the car.
"No sweetie, he has a really hard case to work on and is probably going to get home at 8:30pm." Dad is a lawyer and is practically always working late.
"Can I cook dinner?" I ask hopefully.
"Can I ask you a question?" Mum asks enthusiastically.
"If it is what I think it is, then no, never," I quickly reply. "Ok, here is an easy question. Why do you like to cook dinner?" Mum says cheekily.
"I like to cook," I answer with the same answer as last time. She can rarely get things out of me.
"Why don't you answer with more detail, you always give the same answer, even though there is a better answer," Mum says while starting to cry. Again.
I have an idea. "If I answer, will you cancel my next appointment with the counselor," I know this answer will change the way she acts around and toward me.
"It depends what your answer is."
"Well, I cook because it lets me forget about the way people treat me and act towards me. Everyone is always calling me dumb or not saying anything to me at all. Cooking proves that I can do things without help. It is a way for me to escape reality and have fun. It makes me feel like a normal person, like you," I wonder how long it will be before she tells Sarah about this.
"Well in that case, you can cook dinner and the appointment will be cancelled," Mum says through another blanket of tears.
