Skye entered the room from behind me then,
''Agent May, don't she has been lied to. Just give her a minute.'' Glancing over my shoulder at Skye, I saw Steve on the floor amongst the shattered glass. He held his hand behind him so I could not see the damage I had done but the smell of charred flesh was already evident in the air. Remorse shot through me as sharp as any bullet. I released Coulson and walked around Skye and Fitzsimmons and left the room.
I found myself in the common room, I stood in the doorway of Bucky and Nora's pod. What I saw was expected, Nora was sat with one leg tucked under her sat on Bucky's knee so that she could get the correct angle to fix the electronics in his arm. Or least that was what I suspected she had told him not that he was fazed. I was admiring the fact that people could still love despite all the things they'd been through, when I jumped it had been a long time since someone had caught me off guard.
''Miss. Stark?'' I jumped I turned to see that Skye was the one who spoke.
''Agent Skye. Is Coulson alright?''
''Yes, just a little shocked. I guess.'' She sighed, retreating into her thoughts.
''What is it?''
''Can we take a walk, I don't want anyone to overhear.'' She smiled, shyly tucking her hair behind her ear.
''Ask away,'' I said knowing that she had a question that was eating away at her.
''I erm... I mean are they an... an item?'' Skye avoided the question she really wanted to ask.
''I'm not sure, maybe.'' I replied knowing that she meant my friends, ''but that wasn't the question I meant.''
''How do you control such power without being scared of it?'' She looked at me desperate to know.
''Well, I can't always. As you just saw I am dangerous.'' I sighed.
''But you manage all the same. I don't want to hurt anyone.''
''You have to manage your emotions, but know that everything that destroys. Yet without destruction nothing new can thrive.''
''That's very poetic.''
''And true. Dr. Banner told it to me, just after I levelled a small town then. Thankfully no one was killed but a few were injured.'' I remembered it like it was yesterday, ''As a doctor he went to give some medical advice. My medical training was limited but I went with him to learn. That was when--Steve you should be resting!'' We nearly walked straight into him as we rounded a corner but his reactions were quick enough to stop in time.
''Both of us know that wouldn't help, I need your--'' I stopped him with my hand over his mouth.
''Don't say another word.'' I didn't particularly want SHIELD to know about my healing abilities. ''Is there anywhere private we can talk?''
''Sure, the medical bay. I'll get Fitzsimmons.''
''No. We have it covered, you need to see this.'' I said to Skye. I sensed her confusion and spoke to her in her mind,
It'll make sense soon, I promise.
A chance to see Captain America topless, count me in. She smiled at me and I couldn't kept the smirk off my face from that.
Then turned to Steve, ''You don't mind, do you?''
''Of course not.''
''Medical bay is this way.'' Skye lead us, through the plane to the bay.
When we got there she took up a position just inside the door to give us space, with the lack of plants I had to improvise. Fusing together Fire and Ice, I telekinetically hovered a bubble of water in front of me growing some seaweed to use in place of the chives. Whilst I did that, Steve took off the top half of his uniform so that I could get at the burnt hand and forearm.
''At least it's not as bad as last time,'' he chuckled.
''Wait this has happened before? No wonder Coulson wanted you on the Index instead of X-Men Protocol.'' Skye said crossing her arms.
''He asked for it the first time,'' I laughed.
''She has the right of it there, I made the mistake of insulting her. Accidentally of course, but still.'' He tucked a stray piece of hair from my face while the Ice took effect on the burns.
''What was it you wanted me to see?'' Skye asked clearing her throat.
''This.'' I took Steve's hand in mine, ''You remember what I was telling you?'' She nodded in response, ''Well my last power manifested when I entered the room with the good Doctor.'' I concentrated on Earth and the green swirls surrounded Steve's arm forming their Daffodil as always.
When he was healed I passed his hand to Skye, ''You see all that destruction allowed me to bloom, that was why I stayed with Dr. Banner as long as I did.''
''That's a cool power and all but all I can do is destroy.''
''It's not what your power is, what's important is what you chose to do with it. If you chose to bring a building down on innocent people then it destroys, but if you bring it down on a basement with a bomb about to go boom, it saves lives. Destruction doesn't always mean death Skye.'' I spoke from my heart of the things I'd experienced and grown from.
''Thank you so much.'' She said about to leave the room just as Coulson was on his way in.
Skye I don't need to tell you that no one can know about my healing abilities, it would paint a target on my back, I said in her mind. She nodded once she was out of Coulson's eye line.
''I need to speak with Miss Stark, but I'm guessing you already knew that,'' He said stepping into the room. Steve made a move to come with me, ''No, just her.''
We walked back to the control room. On the screen was a number and the title X-Men protocol.
''What's all this?'' I asked hoping for an explanation which would also satisfy the Professor.
''This is X-Men Protocol, your Professor keeps track of mutants. Gives us numbers and grades. Tells us some of the powers that could possibly be dangerous and ways to stop them with force should that become necessary.'' He explained to me.
''So by taking me on as a SHIELD agent it means that this is void and you can put me on the Index.'' I nudged him so that he might trip up.
''No, I can't. It doesn't work like that unless the get on our radar in a bad way, then we consult the Professor and if it's one of his he can help or send his X-Men after them. They can be brought in and turned into X-Man or later once trained like you as a SHIELD agent or asset.'' He turned to me, ''You are ready to be an agent?''
''Not yet.'' I answered in all honesty.
''I didn't think so either after that stunt earlier today, you need to show more restraint in future. Though it seems both Agents Romanoff, Barton and May all think you are ready as do your family. Captain Rogers also weighed in that you are combat ready.'' He explained, ''I wanted you to hear it from me and not the Captain, I want to offer you your own team--''
''Whoa, wait a minute. I don't think I'm ready to become an agent let alone command a team!'' I said entirely surprised.
''It'll be an elite unit comprised of Sergeant Barnes, Nora and a technical advisor that will be assigned to you.''
''I'm not ready for this, Coulson. Thanks but no thanks.'' I stated.
''This is not up of discussion, Agent Stark. You are ready, you need to trust your training and as to command the Professor informed me that you have commanded to whole of the X-Men at times. You are perfectly capable.'' He reasoned.
''Fine, but on my terms. If and that is a big if I take it at the very soonest my first mission will not be until after my brother's wedding. That is my condition take it or leave it.'' I crossed my arms across my chest.
''We'll take it, once your brother's wedding has been we will contact you and the rest of your team and you will be briefed on your mission parameters.'' He informed me.
''Only if I decide that I am ready by then. Just out of curiosity who will I report to?'' I couldn't forestall my interest in his plans.
''Directly to me, on every mission you will be working closely with another unit I am currently putting together.''
