Barbecue Party

Day 12 - I

Last night my dad decided he wanted to have a barbecue party today. We haven't had one for a while. We discussed it over dinner last night along with Luke.

So they seemed to be getting along very well which makes me really happy. They both liked fishing and football. When Luke left, and Dad went to my room to say goodnight, he said Luke seems like a pretty nice guy. He said he liked him which pretty much made my night. I knew Luke could earn his trust that easy. I mean, what's not to trust, really?

My dad had called Mama Hood (Calum's mom) to invite her and the rest of the boys. Some of the neighbors are also coming. My dad is friendly, so we are expecting a crowd. He also suggested that the lads should play, and Luke said yes without any hesitation.

So I started cleaning the house and prepared everything for the party. My dad was setting up the grill at our front yard and I set up the chips and dips on a table we set on our porch. Dad's house was facing the beach so the view was amazing. We could also feel the ocean breeze and hear the wave from here which only adds up to the summery vibe of our barbecue party.

At around 4pm, people start to arrive with food that they wanted to contribute. Kaycee, a girl who lived four blocks away who was also my age, brought crab dip. Mrs Wilde brought fresh baked rolls. Buck, my dad's friend brought a case of Bud Lights.

I also invited our friend Henry. The old man who lived at our secret hide out where we watched the sunrise.

Mama Hood and the boys arrived at around 5. She brought a delicious Australian dish which I've forgotten the name. She hugged me first, and She went to greet my dad and the neighbors. One by one the boys gave me a quick squeeze and that's when I noticed Calum was missing.

"Where's Calum?" I asked.

The boys shrugged. Then Mikey spoke up. "He hasn't been home since yesterday. He's in the city, I guess. He said he had to run errands for Mali."

"Is he coming?" I asked.

"We don't know. Maybe you should call him." Ashton suggested.

Luke gave me an encouraging look and nodded. I went inside the house and grabbed my phone.

I haven't talked to Calum since that day after the party. He didn't try to contact him, and vice versa. It's just, with Luke being around all the time, I almost forgot about Calum.

But that's a good sign, right? It means I'm finally over my best friend. It means those old feelings are already starting to fade away. No more weird crazy feelings. No more reason to be mad at him for denying me. Because it doesn't matter anymore. We're only bestfriends. And best friends should go to each other's family party, right?

God. I'm blabbering. Point is, I should just call that idiot so he could join us already.

I shook off my weird trail of thoughts and dialed Calum.

His phone kept ringing, I almost thought he wouldn't pick up. But he did.

"Hello?"

"Calum! Where are you?" I asked.

"Ally? Oh shit. Am I late?"

"Everybody's already here. Are you still coming?" I asked, annoyed at how he sounded like he just remembered about the party.

"I'm on my way. I'll be there as soon as I can, okay? And don't finish all the barbecue!"

I laughed at his last remark. My annoyance was already vanishing. He is soo Calum.

When I got back to the party, everybody seemed to be having fun. The parents sat on one table, talking and laughing. My dad and the lads were grilling some more barbecues. Ashton was grilling hamburgers too.

Luke's face brightened when he saw me, and he gestured me to join them. So I did.

Calum arrived approximately an hour later. Mikey was already on his 3rd hamburger and Ashton on his 4th. Luke and I were already halfway on our barbecue.

I went over to welcome him first. I was just about to tease him that we finished all the food when someone emerged from his car.

Surprise surprise! It was Big Boobs Nicki. She was wearing a pair of super short shorts, and a see through top showing off her black lacey bra.

The smile on my face vanished for a split second, until Calum approached me giving me a hug. I forced a smile then and hug him back.

Be cool. Just be cool.

"Sorry I'm late. Had to pick Nicki up." He explained apologetically.

Maybe you shouldn't have. I thought.

"You remember Nicki, right?" He asked.

"Yeah." I nodded.

Nicki on the other hand looked like he didn't have any idea who I was.

"You met her at the party, Nicki. Remeber? Ally?" Calum offered. It didn't even spark any recognition to her. She flashed her fake smile.

"Hey Sally." She said.

What the fuck?

"Its Ally." I corrected.

Calum then cursed under his breath. When I followed his gaze, I saw a furious Mama Hood. Uh-Oh. Someone is in trouble.

"Hey. Gotta go talk to Mum
. Be right back." Calum murmured to Nicki.

He turned to me, looking apologetic. "Will you hang with her for a minute? Thanks." He said before turning to run towards his mom.

I was kind of relieved because he didn't drag her with him to introduce to his mom. But also annoyed because now I'm stuck with her.

But Nicki seemed oblivious. He just watched Calum go. She probably doesn't even care about meeting Calum's mom. Good it means they aren't in a serious relationship.

So why do you care again? Asked the little voice inside my head. I rolled my eyes at her.

Because I'm looking out for my bestfriend! I shot back.

God. I'm even arguing with my subconscious now. How wonderful. I should see a shrink sometimes.

"So Shelley.."

"Ally!" I corrected, summoning all my patience.

"Whatever. Is this your house?" She said nonchalantly, and I swear I could feel my temporal vein pulsing in annoyance.

"Yeah." I replied with a huff.

"Oh my God. Aren't those Calum's bandmates?" She squeaked, running towards the boys.

"Hey guys!"

Mikey stared at her boobs first before saying hey back. Ashton tried not to but he looked like he was struggling. Luke didn't even look at her, he was focused on me.

Nicki started flirting with them. First by complimenting them as a band, then one by one, she started to flatter them. Before I could puke all over the place, I started to make my way out.

By the barbecue I saw Calum and Mama Hood arguing. She looks so furious, I felt sorry for my bestfriend. What Calum did this time, I didn't even wanna know.

I made my way to where the drinks are and grabbed one of the red cups and filled it with punch. When I looked back to where the boys are, I saw that Calum has already joined them. Nicki was clinging to him like a leech which was very disgusting look at.

I looked away and approached Mama Hood instead. I found her glaring towards his son's direction. Carefully, I sat next to her.

"If your stares could literally shoot daggers, that girl will be dead by now." I teased. Her head snapped to my direction and her frown turned into a weak smile.

"I just hate seeing my son hanging around with that girl. She doesn't look decent at all." She spat in disgust.

"Yeah." I said absentmindedly. Nodding my head in agreement.

"Oh honey. I'm sorry about this. If I had known he'd be bringing some girl, I shouldn't have called him at all." She said apologetically.

I knitted my eyebrows in confusion. "You don't have to be sorry about anything Ma. Calum can bring any girl he likes. I don't really mind." I lied.

She looked at me sympathetically and I feared she knows that I was lying. Then she gave me yet another weak smile. "It's too bad you aren't with my Calum anymore. I would've loved to have you in my family."

Her words took me by surprise and I was speechless. Heat rushed up to my face which dilated my blood vessels and made my face look red as a tomato. At least her mom remembered those days.

As if sensing my surprise, she spoke again, reaching for my hand. "If my Calum doesn't end up with you, atleast don't let him end up with her. Please, Ally."

"That's kinda not up to me. That's up to Calum, Ma. I don't think he'll listen to me even if I tried." I explained.

Mrs Hood just shook his head slightly, smiling. "Your opinion matters to him the most, honey... Just.. Promise me you'll give it a try." She said, looking at me expectantly.

My opinion matters to him the most? I doubt that. I don't think I even matter to him that much, let alone my stupid opinions. But she was looking so expectant that all I could do was nod. After all she just wanted me to try, right?

"I'll give it a try." I said, giving her hand a squeeze.
