When I woke up, Jade was lying shirtless on his chest on the floor, his back moving up and down with every breathe. I stretched out on the couch and yawned, then crawled on top of his back.

“Hey,” I said quietly, running my fingers through his hair. “Jade, wake up.”

He stirred slightly, but didn’t fully wake.

I laughed softly. “Jade,” I cooed, tracing the muscles on his back and arms. “Rise and shine. Wakey, wakey.”

“No,” he mumbled into the plush carpet. “Sleepy, sleepy.”

I laughed again, kissing his cheek. “Ok, well I’m leaving.”

“No,” he frowned with his eyes still closed. “No, stay. I…” he yawned. “I want you to stay…with me. Cause…I…you…and then…don’t stop…and…and…” He trailed off as he fell back asleep.

I smiled at him, breathing in his scent before rolling off of him and back onto the couch. He looked so innocent in his sleep.

I was still looking at him 15 minutes later when he started to wake.

“Hey,” he said, his voice husky from sleep.

“Hey sleepy-head,” I grinned looking down at him.

“How long was I out?” he sat up and pulled me down to the floor next to him.

            “Not much longer than me.”

“Why didn’t you wake me?” He pulled me into the crook of his arm.

“I tried,” I said laughing. “You wanted to stay ‘sleepy, sleepy’.”

“Aw! I said that?” he buried his face into my hair.

“Yes. And you mumble in your sleep. Did you know that?”

“Mumble?” He sat up in alarm. “What did I mumble?”

I laughed at his reaction. “Nothing really, just that you love me and you don’t want me to leave.”

“Oh. Ok.” He relaxed into me again. “I thought I might have said what I was dreaming.”

“Jade!” I smacked his chest. “Oh, that’s what you meant when you said ‘don’t stop’, Hah-hah. I get it now!”

He glared at me. “Funny, hah-hah.”

            I grinned evilly.

“I need to go.” He said easing away from me and walking towards his bedroom.

“Go? Where?” I called after him.

“To make a statement at the police station.”

“What did you do Jade?” I asked sternly.

“It wasn’t my fault this time. This crazy old lady-“

“Never mind! I don’t want to know.” I said cutting him off.

“It’s not like it really matters. No one was hurt and I have plenty of money to save my a**.” He was right. Money was not an issue for his family (he can thank his father for that).

“I don’t want you to leave. Hurry back,” I stood on my tippy-toes to kiss him.

“I’ll be back soon.” He smiled and kissed me again, deeper this time. “Or I can stay here. I don’t really need to go to the…Where am I going?”

“To the police station.” I said smiling against his mouth.

“Right.” He looked sad. “I’m taking a cab so you have the jeep if you need anything. I love you, Vi.”

“I love you too.” I said as Jade pulled the door shut quietly.

I sighed and walked back to the couch to lie down. I didn’t really dream about anything while I slept except Jade’s face. I awake to loud obnoxious singing. I jumped as I realized it was my phone ringing.

“Yeah,” I said groggily as I flipped open my phone.

“Vi? Violet?!” I heard Nicky frantically shout my name into the phone. It sounded like she was crying.

“Nicky, calm down. What’s wrong?” I said, the intensity of her voice waking me up.

            “It’s Jade…”

“What about him, Nicky?” I could feel my heart skip a beat as my breath hitched in my throat.

“He was in a…in an accident.”

I flew up off the couch and pulled my sneakers on while I grabbed the keys to the jeep. “Where is he? Nicky, is he alright?”

I could feel my heart beating rapidly and I had trouble catching my breathe. This could not be happening, he was just with me.

“He’s in the ambulance. They’re getting ready to take him to the hospital. I’ll wait for you, hurry!”

“I’m coming,” I was already starting the car and driving down the raod, my vision blurred by tears that refused to fall. I pushed the car faster as I thought about Jade bloody and helpless and all alone. When I got to the main street, the roads were blocked off and cop cars were everywhere, their flashing lights making me dizzy. Nicky was in Dalton’s arms crying. Nicky never cries. This must be bad. I could feel the tears fall out of my eyes and rush down my cheeks.

I started running to get to Nicky, anxious to find Jade. An angry, overweight police officer stepped into my path.

“Miss, I’m gonna have to ask you to back up. This is area is not open for the public.”

Nicky came running over to me and the officer .

“It’s ok. She’s with us,” she said grabbing my arm. I was tempted to stick my tongue out at him, but finding Jade was more important.

Nicky led me to the back of the ambulance.

“They’re getting ready to leave. Do you want to ride with him?”

I nod my head not trusting myself to speak.

Nicky looked at me warningly. “It’s bad, Vi…real bad.”

This was like some horrible nightmare that I coildn’t wake up from.

Nicky hugged me and helped me up into the ambulance. I couldn’t stop the sob that broke from my mouth when I saw Jade. His hair was matted with blood. Cuts ran through his shirt and up his arms. He had wires hooked up to his chest and an IV in his arm.

“Jade?” I said shakily as tears continued to run down my face. I now realized why Nicky was such a mess. I walked up to his face as I saw blood trickle down his cheek. It was quickly wiped away by a nurse. She smiled half-heartedly at me. “He’ll be ok, lovey.” She walked to the side of the ambulance and sat down as the ambulance started to move.

Jade’s eyes opened slowly. “What’s wrong, Vi?” His voice croaked. More tears rolled down my face.  “Don’t cry.” He reached his free hand up to stroke my face. “I would kiss you, but you’re so high up. It’s weird looking up when I am used to looking down to a short person like you.” He joked, trying to get me to smile.

I bent my head and kissed his forehead, the only spot not covered in blood. “That better, Jadey?”

He nodded and smiled. “I love you.”

Fresh tears filled my eyes, landing on his face. “I love you too.” My voice sounded hoarse and thick as I tried to speak through my tears.

“Please, don’t cry.” He said again as his eyes started to flutter shut.

The nurse came back over. “He can’t fall asleep. He may have a concussion. We’ve done all we can for him here. He’ll get the help he needs when we get to the hospital, but until then, try to keep him awake, dear-heart.”

I nodded then sat down next to him. “Baby, I need you to stay awake. Can you do that?” I said determined to be strong.

He nodded, his eyes slowly reopening.

“Hey, Jadey? What did you dream about last night?”

He started to laugh, then winced. “You’ll get mad.”

“No, I won’t. I promise.” I whispered, trying to keep the mood light.

“Yes you will.” He argued back, grinning mischievously.

“Will not,” I smiled back. If this is what it took to keep him awake, then I would continue this childish banter.

“Hey, can you do something for me?” He looked at me sheepishly.

“Depends on what it his, Jadey.” I joked thinking that I would do anything he wanted.

“Play with my hair. You always do that, and I know I whine, but I love when you do that.”

“Of course,” I smiled. I ran my fingers through his hair, ignoring the blood. “Poor baby.”

            “Yeah,” he smiled. “Poor baby.”

The back door of the ambulance flew open. Jade’s eyes widened in shock. “Violet,” he grabbed my hand.

“I’m right here, Jade.” I managed to say before he was whirled out of the ambulance and into the hospital. I ran along side his bed, ignoring what the doctors shouted around us. I tried to keep Jade’s attention and let him know that I was right next to him. I was determined to not leave his side when the nurse from the ambulance put her hand on my shoulder. “Darling, you need to let go of him. They’re taking him back to surgery.”

Jade looked up at me frantic and his hand tightened on mine. “No, Vi, Please.”

I slowly let go of his hand. “I’ll be waiting right here, Jadey. I love you.”
