4.) Where the Day Shines Brighter

“Let go of me!” Clarisa cried as she desperately tried to pull away from the spikey hair guy.

“Leave her alone!” A figure shouted as it rushed out of the bushes and punching the spikey haired guy in surprise.

“Ah!” He cried as he hit the ground. Clarisa stumbled back and landed roughly on the ground. She slowly looked up to see the boy staring back at her. Her eyes opened wide in confusion and fear.

“Nick!” exclaimed the trembling voice of Clarisa.

“You!” Nick glared in shock. His fist trembling as sweat slowly raced down his burning forehead. Clarisa could only stare at him wondering what was going to happen. Was he going to hurt her now that no one was around or was he going to let the other guys have their way with her? It was all just too much for her.

“You!” The other guy jumped to his feet and started to run with his fist in the air and ready to assault Nick. Nick looked back and jumped forward with his fist out.

Clarisa watched as their fists swung at each other. Nick blocked one and upper cut the guy and knocking him down to the ground as the spikey hair guy got up and whipped his lip.

“Why you?! You are going to die now!” The guy ran forward swinging. Nick quickly moved his arms up and blocked both hit and then started rushing the guy, hitting him hard in his face over and over again.

“Rodger!” the other guy shouted as he stumbled forward and catching his footing and charged forward.

Nick grabbed both of the Rodger’s hands and slammed his head in his nose and then spun smashing his fist into the guy’s face, knocking him hard to the floor.

“Agh!” He cried.

“Grrr….” Rodger slowly got back up on his feet and dusted himself off and looked at his friends who slowly climbed back onto his feet, then turned to Nick. “You just got lucky this time. Next time… Let’s Dern!”

“Shhhh! Fine then.” Dern said as they both slowly walked away from the two of them, leaving.

Clarisa stared as the two of them vanished into the vines. The only light that cast upon them was the bon fire. Quickly rushing and fiercely beating, her heart pounded rashly in her chest as she tried to figure out what was going to happen next. He stood their panting heavily as he stared at her. Was he going to attack? Was he just going to leave her behind? What? She just couldn’t figure it out.

“What the hell was that all about?” He scolded her as her heart jumped with her trembling body stopping instantly causing her to swear that her heart stopped for that one second. Pupils opened wide with her jaw dropping as far as it could go. His eyes…they seemed to be filled with such obscure that she couldn’t coop with it at all. “What do you think you are doing out her this late?”

“Ah?” She blotted out with astonishment.

“Are you stupid or something? You are lucky I came here just in time or else you would have been…” Nick slowly refrain his tongue back as he lowered his head as if in mourning.

Clarisa’s eyes stared at Nick as he turned his head away from her, avoiding her eyes. Her breath slowly came out hesitantly, never seeing this side of him before. It felt like forever since she said something, but finally mustarded up the courage and lowered her head down and sprouted out an “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause you more trouble.”

“You idiot.” He said under his breath.

“What?” Clarisa cried out as her face flustered red.

“Here of all the places this had to happen.” He shook his head as he turned to face the stump in the middle of the clearing. Clarisa paused as he slowly walked over to it and sat down and rested his elbows on his knees and his forehead on his hands. She stared as she could see his pain fill his face as he shook his head as if he was trying to forget something. Clarisa sighed as she stood up and slowly walked over to him and then sat next to him on the stump and sat next to him, because it was big enough for two to sit on.

He paused as he slowly turned to see her glazing at the stars trying to avoid his stare. PUMP! Nick’s heart jumped as Clarisa gently placed her hand on his shoulder. His eyes glistened as they stared upon her face as she was turning red. She swallowed a large amount of air as she tried to stay calm.

“I am not sure why you are like this, but…Thank you.” Clarisa foster up the courage to say.

Nick’s eyes stared at her as she tried to avoid looking at him, but slowly took glimpse after glimpse at him. She held her breath as she started to realize how good looking he really was. The fire slowly dies out as the breeze brushed against them both, blowing her hair gently. This was the first time she really got a good look at him, mainly due to the fact they were always arguing all the time, but this time…it was different. His eyes were a soft brown that sparkled back and forth as he stared back into her eyes. The distractions that were with them since they met seemed to all fluttered off into the darkness and became a new light.

“What?” He asked softly with a much so more gentler touch in his words.

“Thank you…for rescuing me just now…” Clarisa couldn’t look him in his eyes any more. He stared at her in confusion.

He gave a soft laugh causing her to nearly fall off of the stump. She stared at him in confusion as he smiled and shook his head. “Sorry.”

“Ugh?” Clarisa stared at him confused.

“For everything. For causing you so much problems since you came here….I guess…I wasn’t in the right mind.” Nick chuckled nervously to himself.

“Oh, that is okay.” Clarisa rolled her eyes and turned away from him. Her breath slowly came out steadily. Her eyes traced back to him. He has his head down. The moonlight shined on his head causing him to appear to be glowing blue. His eyes stared emptily at the ground. Those eyes that reminded her of hers before she even made friends at her old school. She was terrible at meeting people. Always messing things up, but now, she was finally alone with a guy. A cute one at best. Her heart then began to race heavily as she felt like melting away or running off. She looked at the trees and bushes and thought about just leaving and leaned forward to just do that as she felt his hand place over hers. Holding her breath she turned to see him staring into her eyes seriously. Her heart throbbed uncontrollably as she leaned back wanting to get away but just couldn’t move her body.

“I just…Ugh. Never mind. I just lost myself there for a second. When I saw you I mean…You sat down and I thought…Never mind.” He stood up and shook his head.

“What?” She asked now more confused than ever.

“I just don’t want to forget about her…” He added with sympathy.

“Forget who?”  Clarisa leaned forward.

“Please, just forget I said that…” He smiled at her and then lifted his hand to get hers. She stared at it and then traced it back to his shoulder and then to his face. “Come, it is late. You should be more careful from now on. Okay?”

Clarisa just couldn’t put her hand on it but, she felt safe when he said that. So she extended her hand out to touch his. With a gentle warm touch, he closed his hands on her and gently helped her up.

“Thank you… For saving me again. I don’t know what I would have done if you didn’t… So thank you.” Clarisa lowered her head.

“I am sorry once again. I don’t know why I acted the way I did. I guess I did lose myself there. I haven’t thought this clearly in a long time. I guess in a way I haven’t been myself…But let’s forget this. I still have to take you home just to make sure you get there safely.” Nick smiled softly at her.

“Alright, but only to make sure I am safe!” Clarisa stammered and then started to walk with him. By the time she got to her house she was about to walk towards her steps when she realized she was holding his hand the whole time since he helped her up till she got him. “Oh!” She jumped back pulling her hand to her chest. Her face ignited in a red glow.

“Well…Good-night.” Nick said rubbing his head and slowly turned to move to his house.

“Hey.” Clarisa called out to him unsure why she had in the first place.

“Huh? Yeah?” He asked her.

“Thank you…once again, and for walking me home. I guess I owe you.” Clarisa said rubbing her hand trying pull away from the thought of her holding his hand angrily.

“Huh? There is no need to worry about it. Really.” Nick rubbed his head and turned around and started to walk home.

“Jerk!” Clarisa cried out. He paused. “I owe you! Don’t try to get out of it! That is how I am!”

“Okay.” He chuckled and started towards his house. Clarisa watched him as he walked up his patio and then he stopped to look at her and then turned away and opened his door and wen t in, shutting it softly.

“What is wrong with me?” She looked at her hand. “He was harassing me the whole time and now is somehow friendly to me? There is no way! I must be dreaming! I must be!”

She went into her house and managed to make it into her room without disturbing her mother. SO then the next day began after a long night of restless sleep. As she walked on campus still dazed from last night. She could still feel everyon staring at her and talking about her.

“Yeah, Nick. He is acting…different now.”

“Huh? How?”

“He is saying hi to people now. That isn’t like him. He hasn’t been like this since…you know.”

Clarisa shook her head. “There is no way I did this! It couldn’t have been from last night! There was no way!

“I can’t believ it either. He just went up to his old friends and started to talk to them once again.”

I am guessing he is finally getting better now, right?

“Yeah, I guess he had to let out all the steam that was building up in him over the year since it happened.”

“Happened? What happened?” Clarisa asked the two boys who seemed to have been following her as they talked.

“Uh?” One looked at her confused.

“That is her! That one girl!”

“The new girl?”

“Yeah! The one he was yelling at all the time. That girl!”

“Oh, I would hate to be that girl then!” He whispered back to his friend.

“Yeah. I feel bad for her…But we should avoid her. I don’t want to get in their way! Especially Nick! He can be very scary!”

“Yeah, I know what you mean.”

“I can hear you two whispering! I am standing right here!” Clarisa shouted angrily.

‘Let’s just go! Pretend you don’t know her!” The other guy said.

“Yeah! We don’t know her!” He followed as they walked away. Clarisa just continued to glare at them. “Hey, we really don’t know her!”

“Good! Let’s leave it like that!” They both went around the corner.

“Talk about rude!” Clarisa lowered her head. “Is this what everyone thinks of me now?” With a deep breath she looked and said to herself. “I am going to give Nick the piece of my mind! He ruined my whole school year already!”

“Oh, so you are really bold!” Volivia said from behind Clarisa.

“Wha!” Clarisa screamed out on the top of her lungs. “How did you get here?”

“Well, if you really want to know!” Volivia said annoyed as she crossed her arms. “I walked. And if you want to know anything deeper, it all started when my Mom and Dad…”

“Okay, I get it! I don’t need any more detail! I just want to know how long you have been standing behind me.” Clarisa cried out angrily pinching the top part of her nose between her eyes.

“I am not sure. I just loved the way you were doing right now. How you responded, how you expressed you feelings and your facial features… You would be a great actress someday if you only tried harder.” Volivia smiled.

I can’t say, but your smile for some reason really pisses me the heck off!” Clarisa glared at her.

“Ha! You are so funny!” Volivia patted her on the back. “We have to get to rehearsal! Pronto!”

And like that Volivia pulled and tugged Clarisa against her will to the auditorium.

“Okay, now that we are here, let us get changed into our costumes!” Volivia smiled.

“Costumes?” Clarisa asked confused.

“Yeah, Penelope! Come and get her costume!” Volivia shouted and a small ninth grade black girl came running out with two dresses, one blue with silver folds on the front part and with silver glitter on the chest area. The other was a plain red dress. A very pain kind of very boring red dress.

“Ugh? Can I at least get a better one?” Clarisa asked really annoyed.

“Nope! You are lucky you got something.” Volivia smiled happily as she took her dress.

“I have a better one at home. I will just wear that.” Clarisa started.

“Now!” Volivia snapped at her angrily.

“Huh? What is your problem? You get to wear a good dress and I have to wear this cheap, ugly…thing?” Clarisa cried out pointing at the dress.

“Well, that is too bad. Like I said, you are lucky to get what you get!” Volivia shook her head.

“But!”

Listen to me, and listen to me good. Can you make a dress?” Volivia asked.

“Um, no! Why?” Clarisa asked.

“It is tradition that you make your own costume for the play. We cannot break this tradition! No one gets passed it!” Volivia said as she shook her head.

“Uh?” Clarisa cried out in shock.

“Now come on then, let us get ready to see if they fit.”

“Hey, the cast is ready for the rehearsal!” Erica shouted.

“Good. Because we got the new outfits for the play! So we can now get to work now!” Volivia shouted back.

Clarisa looked at the dress and frowned at it.

“It isn’t too bad…” Penelope grinned softly. She had short hair that was breaded backwards. She wore overalls and a white shirt underneath. She looked kind of a like a farm girl if you were to ask anyone.

“I hate it! I is stupid!” Clarisa looked around to see Volivia had already left to put on her costume.

“It isn’t too bad…I mean…I did make it!” Penelope said nervously with a hint of being hurt.

“Oh, I didn’t mean it that way!” Clarisa cried out now feeling bad.

“No, I am sorry, I had to make it as soon as possible. I rushed it. I should have thought how it was going to look like. I am so sorry! I should have done a much better job.” Clarisa stared at her and then shook her head.

“Here. I will put it on.” Clarisa got it. And so….Now changed Clarisa was standing waiting to for practice to begin. How would everyone feel when they realize she couldn’t act to save her own life? Well this was fun while it lasted, or could it be called fun in the first place?”

“Alright! Everyone on the set! You, keep the lighting right on me! Don’t have the yellow light on, the light blue light! Remember! The light blue light!” Volivia ordered as she walked around trying to see if everything was in place. Clarisa paused as she notice everyone staring at Volivia. She was…gorgeous. Even if were to wear this ugly dress she had on she would still stand out. Her body shape was amazing. All the guys seemed to drool over her. She lowered her head as she looked at herself. She was just regular and plain. It matched the dress well. She sighed loudly.

“Okay! You forgot the pillar! Penelope! Bring that over here right this instant! If you forgot during the play you would have ruined the whole thing!”

“Oh, I am so sorry!” She cried and grabbed the pillar that had a curvy hook on the edge. She grabbed it and ran on the stage and then stumbled, dropping the pillar towards Clarisa. She stared in shock. As the curve came down at her.

Teeeeeeaaaaaar!

The pillar hit the floor as Clarisa stood there with a huge tear in the front part of her dress. Everyone could see her white tube shirt she had underneath, luckily the dress hadn’t fell off or torn up much more.

“Wha!” Clarisa cried as she covered up her chest still, though she was wearing a tube top.

“I am so-ooo sorry! I really am! Are you okay!” Penelope cried running over to her.

“You! You ruined me!” Clarisa cried out in embarrassment.

“I am so sorry! I will fix your dress for you!” Penelope cried.

“No!” Volivia crossed her arms.

“What?” Clarisa cried out.

“How will the play go on?” “What do we do?” Everyone started to panic.

“That is against the rules!” Volivia shouted.

“But!” Clarisa cried out.

“But since we are in a crisis there is nothing in the rules that doesn’t say you can’t have help making the dress so Penelope, lend her your skills. From now on, I will practice one on one with Clarisa so nothing like this will happen again.” Volivia said as she winked at Penelope.

“Oh, alright!” Penelope shouted up and grabbed Clarisa and started to pull her towards the changing room. Clarisa couldn’t help but wondered if this was all a set up. And if so, what would have happened if she hadn’t decided to wear the tube top that day? She just didn’t want to think about that at all.

After rehearsal school started and Clarisa walked into her class where everyone stared at her. She looked towards Nick spot which was empty. She took a deep breath and walked over to her spot and sat down and sighed. For some reason he didn’t show up for class or school that day and when rehearsal was over she head straight back for her house. As she walked there she paused at the spot where she had last seen him, the bushes and trees that blocked the small clearing. She slowly turned her head to then hear the leaves rattled. She quickly jumped back for a second thinking it was the two guys from last night to see Nick coming out of the bushes. Her eyes opened in shock.

“Nick?” She asked softly.

“Hey…?” He smiled nervously and then turned away.

“Wh-why didn’t you go to class today? I heard you were at school today this morning?” Clarisa asked not knowing why she even did in the first place. Especially since how he treated since she first met, though this was much better than their relationship before.

“I had important things to attend to? Why? It is none of your business.” He rolled his eyes. Clarisa lowered her head angrily just as he added. “I heard you are in the play…I hope you do well.”

“Huh?” Clarisa asked.

“I am sure you will do fine. Um...I am sorry, but I have to go…Sorry.” Nick then started to walk off as Clarisa stared at him. It was true what everyone was saying. He had changed. Could it have been because of last night? Clarisa shook the thought out of her head and started to head home too. Things were just getting too much for her.
