I spread the thin curtains
to let the sun peek through our window
this bright and early morning
and I stood there for a moment, breathing
into the city below me,
taking in its elegance--
giving back some of my own.
The harbor lay out long and still
to my right, ships sat,
idling to show the people the world.
Men walked by with white, styrofoam cups;
they had the air of coffee in their walk.
They had brown, black, tan, leather briefcases
slung over their shoulders
and the revolving door never paused
on the office building across the street
from where we slept.
Gloria stood next to me,
appropriate company for the song now filling the room
and looked down.
She planned our route to the day:
through a plain, narrow park
between us and the offices.
We dressed, shouldered our bags and set out
hearts pounding for our park.
