Lukas pov: the first day of highschool. Wow. I'm so stoked. Who doesn't love a building that hell encarnated? Thats sarcasm if ya couldnt tell, no one is really that happy to be in a crowded class room that reeks of chalk, whiteboards, and sadness. I arrive early, getting a seat in the back. The seats are metal and bend every time i try to shift in them, how do the schools have funds for field trips and not proper chairs? I don't know, not sure if anyone knows really.
Class starts and everyone is chatting, meanwhile im just trying to stay away from people. A loud group a girls sat next to me, one with bright red hair and the rest look like they were trying to match her because they all had streaks of red in their hair.
It hurts my ears, all their highpitch voices talking about boys and sex like there items to observe and test.
A tall brown hair girl sits next to me, shes different, not loud, not arrogant, but gets respect from others. What did she ever do that I hadn't?
"Class, class, please take a seat, quiet down so we can start." no one listens, the teachers words are about as meaningful as an empty soda can thats been crumpled and thrown to the side.
"Class-" more chatter, the teachers face turns red and her hands tighten on the dark redwood desk in the fount
"CLASS." everyone goes quiet and immediately falls into their seats. Its pathetic how they only listen when the volume raises. "Thats better, now everyone pull out your textbooks and flip to page 92, read the first paragraphs and highlight whats necessary." i pull out my pencil and the heavy textbook. My cheek rests on my palm, my elbow on the desk. I glance over to the brunette girl near me, her brown eyes trace the lines in my text book. MY text book. I lean back a little and turn to her fully, tilting my head, silently asking 'where is your text book?' and the girl pulls my textbook between the both of us,
"Lets share."
"SHARE? W-wait, wait, wait, where is YOUR text book-" but the teacher shushes me, i puff out my cheeks in annoyance and turn my head away, then i rest it back in my palm and keep reading. I chew on the light pink eraser part on my pencil, not biting, just chewing. Im hungry, my mind drifts to all the times my parents took my food and told me the school gives us free lunch anyways so im just wasting their food. I always just accepted that answer, not wanting to be anything less then perfect for them.
Their perfect little boy. If i cant be something they are proud for then what am i really?
Nothing.
"Alright, times up, i just wanted you guys to read something to get your brains moving, this text wont be related at all to your project." the teacher says, sitting at her desk, the teachers legs crossed, her taping stick taps on the white board where she wrote 'first project: egg drop.' and as she taps on the board some of the chalk falls down. But its still somewhat eligible.
The class breaks out into more talking, kids getting up and running to groups, trying to get to their friends as they see the words on the board 'groups of six or more'...fuck.
Everyone's going to their friends and my eyes dart around the room. I'm going to be alone again, just that kid who has no friends and has to do the project solo.
"ah, ah, ah, class. I'm assigning groups. Sarah, max, macy, cassidy..." the teacher blabbers on, i always liked it when the teacher assigned groups because i would have got gotten any groups if not. The other kids in the class don't like it, they are separated from their friends and people they are close with.
But i guess thats the upside of having no friends, no one to leave you.
"And luka, ivan, till, mizi, hyuna, and sua! Everyone get in your groups and sit together, these are your new seating groups for the year" the teachers voice announces. The brunette girl next to me grabbed my arm and urged me to come with her and she started collecting out group. Im glad shes here to gather us because i would have been walking around like an idiot for five minutes because i knew nobody's names.
The brunette girl got us all to the back of the class where i was originally, im back in the same seat, the brunette sitting to the right of me, a boy with gray hair sits next in front of this boy with black hair, a girl with short black hair sits in front of me and then a girl with pink hair sits to the left of me.
"Lets say our names! Ill start, im mizi!" the girl in pink hair says, her green eyes sparkle under the artificial lighting. But im just waiting for lunch. Next the black hair girl in front of me turns around, we are all facing each other, the gray hair boy and black hair boy having to turn their bodies fully in the chairs and sit backward just to face us.
"Im sua." the girls voice was quiet, hesitant at first, but she kept glancing at mizi so i assume they know eachother. Then a lower voice introducing himself,
"My names ivan," then ivan turns to the gray hair boy who is taping his nails on the desk in a annoying mantra.
"Hm? Wha- oh im till. Didn't know we were doing introductions." his name is till? As in the word? Or as in the action of 'tilling' the soil to prepare it to plant seeds? The brown-haired girl, hyuna i think her name was nudges me with her elbow.
"Your next, what's your name? Unless of course you don't have one" she says with a laugh, it's not a laugh I recognize. Whenever I hear people laugh at home it's a mocking one, a one to instill fear, but hyuna's words and actions didn't have any hints of danger, so I speak up.
"Im luka." my voice is quiet, my hands fidgeting, eyes watching the clock, almost lunch time..kinda.
