Tawan walked with confidence. At least, that's what anyone watching would see.

His steps were steady, measured. His shoulders straight, his gaze forward. He looked like someone who belonged in a place like this-inside a building of glass walls, quiet authority, and people who moved with purpose.

But beneath that calm exterior, his thoughts refused to settle.

He was nervous.

Not the kind that showed in shaking hands or uneven breathing. No. Tawan had learned long ago how to keep that hidden. This was quieter, deeper. The kind that sat in his chest and tightened with every step forward.

He didn't want to work like this.

Didn't want to enter a company through connections he didn't earn on his own. Didn't want to feel like every glance carried an unspoken assumption-that he was only here because of who he knew.

But he had no choice.

This opportunity mattered. More than his pride, more than his discomfort. And refusing it wouldn't change anything, except close a door he might not get again.

So he showed up.

Tawan paused briefly at the front desk, offering a polite smile to the receptionist. "Good morning. I'm Tawan. I was told to report today."

She glanced at her screen, then back at him with a nod. "Yes, we've been expecting you. You'll be assisting on the executive floor. Take the elevator to the twenty-third-someone will be there to guide you."

"Thank you."

Simple. Professional. Normal.

That's what this was supposed to be.

He turned toward the elevators, pressing the button with fingers that felt steadier than he expected. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Maybe.

The doors slid open.

Tawan stepped inside, alone for a moment, and pressed his floor. The soft hum of the elevator filled the silence as the doors began to close.

And then.

It stopped.

A hand slipped between the narrowing gap, forcing them open again.

Tawan looked up.

The man who entered didn't need to say anything to command the space. It was there in the way he carried himself-controlled, precise, entirely self-contained. His expression was neutral, but not empty. There was something behind it. Something sharp.

He looked... familiar.

Tawan's breath caught, just for a second.

Narin.

It took everything in him not to react.

Years had passed since the last time he'd seen him, back when things had been simpler, lighter. Back when Narin wasn't this... distant.

Back when he wasn't the CEO.

Now, standing only a few steps away, Narin looked different. Older, yes. But more than that. Colder. Refined in a way that made him feel completely out of reach.

Untouchable.

Tawan looked away first.

He lowered his gaze slightly, pretending to check his phone, though the screen remained dark. Anything to avoid being caught staring.

Narin didn't acknowledge him.

Not a word. Not a glance.

The elevator doors closed again, and the silence returned, but this time, it felt heavier.

Tawan became suddenly aware of everything.

The quiet sound of their breathing.

The faint scent of Narin's cologne-clean, subtle, but impossible to ignore.

The small distance between them that felt... smaller than it should.

He told himself it didn't matter.

Maybe Narin didn't recognize him. It had been years. People change. Faces blur. There was no reason to expect anything.

The elevator chimed.

The doors opened.

A few employees stepped out on lower floors, offering polite greetings to Narin as they passed.

"Good morning, sir."

"Morning."

His voice was calm. Controlled. The same tone he used with everyone.

Nothing personal.

Nothing familiar.

By the time they reached the twenty-third floor, the elevator had nearly emptied. Only the two of them remained.

Tawan felt it then the shift.

Not in movement. Not in sound.

But in awareness.

Narin stepped out first.

Tawan followed a second later, careful to keep his distance. The hallway stretched ahead, lined with glass panels and closed doors. It was quieter here. More private.

More... isolated.

Narin walked with the same measured pace, not once looking back.

For a moment, Tawan considered letting it end there.

Just another silent encounter. Just another unspoken distance.

But something in him resisted that.

Maybe it was the past. Maybe it was pride. Or maybe it was something else entirely-something he didn't want to name.

His steps slowed.

Then stopped.

"Sir-"

The word left his mouth before he could think it through.

Narin paused.

It was subtle. Barely noticeable. But it was there.

A single break in movement.

Then, slowly, he turned.

For the first time since entering the elevator, his gaze met Tawan's.

And just like that, everything shifted.

There was recognition.

Clear. Immediate. Undeniable.

It flickered in Narin's eyes for only a second before something else replaced it-something sharper, more controlled.

But it had been there.

Tawan saw it.

"Is there something you need?" Narin asked.

His voice was even. Professional. Distant.

As if they were strangers.

Tawan held his gaze a moment longer than he should have.

"I-" He stopped himself, adjusting his tone. "I was told to report here. I'm starting today."

A pause.

Not long. But enough.

Narin's eyes moved over him briefly not lingering, not obvious. Just enough to take him in.

Assess him.

"Name."

"Tawan."

Another pause.

This one quieter.

He already knew.

"Follow me," Narin said finally, turning away before Tawan could read anything more from his expression.

No acknowledgment. No mention of the past. Nothing.

Tawan exhaled slowly, only realizing then that he'd been holding his breath.

He stepped forward, falling into place behind him.

They walked in silence.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

This one was... different.

Tighter.

Heavier.

As if something had been set into motion without either of them saying it out loud.

Tawan's gaze lingered on Narin's back for a moment on the straight line of his shoulders, the controlled precision in every step.

Unreachable.

That was the word that came to mind.

And yet.

There had been that moment.

That brief flicker of recognition.

It shouldn't matter.

It shouldn't change anything.

But as Tawan followed him down the quiet hallway, one thought refused to settle.

If Narin truly felt nothing.

Then why did that single glance feel like a warning?

Or worse like the beginning of something neither of them intended?
