MIA

"Do you need a ride?" Isla asked, jerking her thumb to a motorcycle in the parking lot. "I have a spare helmet."

I shook my head. Not because I was deathly afraid of motorcycles, which I was, but because I had my own car.

"I have a car," I said, and pointed to the beat up red Honda I owned.

"Okay," she said.

I watched as she sped out of the parking lot.

I noticed a blue Chevy in my driveway when I pulled up to the gates of Grant Estate.

I opened the door and my parents were standing at the island each with their own glass of champagne.

"You've got to be kidding me," I said, kicking off my flats.

My parents' heads turned in my direction.

"You have been divorced for fourteen years! That's over a fucking decade!"

I didn't like to swear but my parents were special. Specially stupid.

"I'm doing fine, Mia nice to see you too," my dad said.

"Fuck you," I said. "Stop acting like I owe you some sort of courtesy when I see you for two days every year, more if Grandma and Grandpa come over."

My mom spoke up, "That's no way to talk to your father-"

"I have a father?" I asked. "All I see is a sperm donor."

"MIA!" My mother yelled.

"I'm going to my room," I said. "Tell Gram and Gramps I said hi." I pointed to my dad. "You better be gone by sunrise tomorrow."

My music blasted as I did my homework.

My room faced the front of the house so I saw my Grandparents pull up.

"Mia can you turn that down?!" My mom yelled.

I turned the music up louder. I Hate Everything About You by Three Days Grace was on a loop for the past half an hour.

My mom barged into my room. "I SAID TURN THAT DOWN!"

I paused my music. Looking satisfied my mom left. I waited until I couldn't hear her heels hitting the marble floor and I pressed play on Bohemian Rhapsody.

This time it was my Chinese Grandmother who barged into my room. I turned down my music.

"Are you okay nieta?" She asked. Yes my Chinese grandmother spoke Spanish.

"Just in a fight with mom and dad," I said.

"Is it because of the divorce?" She asked.

"Yeah, wait what?" I exclaimed.

"I'm old, not stupid," she replied, calmly.

I sighed.

"How's your new school?" She asked.

"I like it better than Thornhill Prep.," I replied.

"Meet any girls?" She asked.

I gave her a light hit. "Grandma!" I groaned.

"Well did you?" She asked.

I turned my head back to my laptop screen.

"You did!" She exclaimed. "Tell me about her."

"Her name is Isla," I said. "She has Platinum Blonde hair that's cut into a pixie cut. She's funny, she has a big family, she's pretty, she rides a motorcycle."

"So she's badass?"

I snorted. "Yes Grandma she's very badass."

"Good," my Grandmother said. "You're too good."

I shrugged. "I'm expected to take the family business," I said. "Whether I take mom or dad's is the only question. And if I'm head of a company I need a clean record, and good grades."

"And a beautiful rebellious woman by your side," she said.

I pointed my pen at her, "exactly."

I closed my textbook and stood up.

"Where are you going?" She asked, as I changed into a sports bra and tights.

"I'm going for a run," I said.

I gave Grandma a kiss. "Te amo abuela," I said. "Wǒ hěn kuài huílái." (I love you Grandma. I'll be right back)

"Wǒ yě ài nǐ," she called after me. (I love you too)

I took the side entrance out of the house.

It was September and there was still warm weather although it would be getting cold soon.

I ran with my earbuds in on low volume so I could hear if there was a bike coming or something.

I was half way through my run and I was turning around when I heard a wolf whistle. I turned back around ready to tell off a horny teenager when I saw "Isla?" I asked, taking out my earbuds.

"Hey," she said.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"I live here," she said, gesturing to the building.

I looked at her in shock. "There's no way your entire family can live there," I said.

"You're right," she said. "It's just me and Will."

I raised my eyebrows. "Why?"

"My parents are homophobic," she replied. "When I came out I got kicked out." She gave a bitter laugh. "Will stood up for me and got kick out too. We live here now."

I noticed groceries in her hand and took some. "I'll help you put these away," I said.

"Isla is that you?" Will called when we opened the door.

"Yes and I brought a friend so you better be wearing clothes!" Isla called back.

A pause then, "is she cute?"

I laughed.

"She likes chicks not dicks!" Isla yelled.

Will came out shirtless and took the groceries from Isla. He looked at me. "Hey, I know you," he said. "Me-ah, right?"

I winced. "My-ah," I corrected.

"Right," he said. "How was work?" He asked Isla.

"Good I guess," she replied. "I mean it's Tim Hortons it's fucking hectic."

Will laughed.

"When are you leaving for work?" She asked him.

"About an hour," he said. "I'll be back at midnight."

"Will," she groaned. "You have to wake up at six, and you know you have trouble sleeping. How are you going to function in the morning?"

"What does the place you work at sell?" He asked.

"Donuts and Breakfast sandwiches," she deadpanned.

"Ha ha," he said, sarcastically.

I felt like I was intruding on something. "I'm going to go," I said.

Isla stood up. "I'll walk you," she said.

I looked at Will, who shrugged. "Sure," I said. "Cool."

"Holy shit," Isla said, when she caught sight of my house.

I opened my eyes and laughed. "It is a bit much," I said.

"A bit?" She said. "This is like seven of my parents' house."

I punched in the key code and the gates slowly opened.

We walked to the front door. My mom flung open the door and ran into my arms.

"Mia I was so worried," my mom said.

"I told you she went for a run," my grandmother said. "No one believes the old lady."

I pushed my mom off of me. "This is Isla," I said, pointing at Isla.

My grandmother smiled and my mom shook Isla's hand.

"Tā shì nǐ de nǚ péngyǒu ma?" My mom asked. (Is she your girlfriend?)

"Méiyǒu," I said. "Hái méi." (No. Not yet)

My mother smiled. "Nice to meet you Isla."

"Nice to meet you too," she replied.

To my utter dismay my dad shook Isla's hand as well.

"So you go to school with Mia?" My dad asked.

"Yes sir," she replied. "I'm showing her around."

"Very nice," he said.

"Well I'd better go," she said. "Will left his key at school and if the apartment isn't locked we could get robbed."

"See you tomorrow," I said as she walked away.

"Grandma and Grandpa know you're divorced," I said. "You can leave now."  I said to dad. "I'll  try not to slam the gate in your face."

He gave my mom and Grandmother a kiss on the cheek. When he got to me I put my hand in front of my face, we shook hands and he left.

A/N:
I don't even know what happened. I try to make a novel chapters are too small. I try to make a short story chapters are too big.

Okay so chapter will be between 700- 1300 words. Still a short story.

Sorry for the late update.

Today's the last day for the Wattys so freaking out. I doubt I'll win because my story is so short and doesn't have many reads, but I believe in you Crazy Butterflies.

K that's it.

MWAH. LUV YA. BUH-BYE.
