Vivienne

I always thought it would feel like magic.

Not the loud kind. Not lightning or fireworks or anything that would draw a crowd.

Something quieter.

Something meant just for me.

I turn eighteen on a Thursday.

It starts like every other day in our house. Me waking up before my alarm, already listening. Waiting to see what kind of morning it's going to be. Quiet kitchen. Half empty bottle on the counter. My mom asleep on the couch, one arm hanging off the edge like she just drifted there and never made it to bed.

I stand there for a second, watching her breathe.

She looks peaceful like this.

You'd never know.

I grab a blanket and drape it over her, careful not to wake her. Then I clean up the kitchen a little. Rinse the glass. Throw away the napkin. Straighten things out like I always do.

By the time she stirs, I already have my shoes on.

"Happy birthday, baby," she says, her voice soft and rough at the same time. She pulls me into a quick hug that smells like perfume trying to cover something else "I left you something."

There's a cupcake on the counter.

Store bought. Pink frosting. A candle pressed in at an angle like it wouldn't stand up straight.

It makes something warm twist in my chest anyway.

"Thanks, Mom," I say, smiling like I always do.

Because I love her.

Because she loves me.

Even if it doesn't always look the way it's supposed to.

School feels the same as always. Lockers slamming. Laughter in the halls. The low hum of voices and footsteps and everything familiar.

But underneath it all, there's something else.

A quiet, restless flutter in my chest.

I keep pressing my fingers to the inside of my wrist as I walk, like I can feel it there. Like something is building just beneath my skin.

Eighteen means something.

Everyone says it does.

It means possibility.

It means...maybe today.

My friends used to joke about it. The bond. The way it snaps into place the second you meet them. Like something invisible finally locking into place.

Like finding the missing piece of yourself.

I've always half believed it wouldn't happen to me.
Not like that.

Not all at once.

But still, I hope.

By the time the last bell is about to ring, I'm running late. My shoes squeak against the polished floor as I hurry down the quieter hallway near the administrative offices. It's always emptier here.

Calmer.

Safer.

I slow when I turn the corner.

And then I stop.

There's someone standing near the classroom door at the end of the hall.

Not a student.

Sebastian Bennett. Older. Early twenties, maybe. Dark hair, neat. Button down shirt, sleeves rolled just enough to show his forearms. There's something about him that feels... put together. Controlled.

He looks up.

And the world tilts.

It's not dramatic. Not at first.

It's subtle.

Like the air changes. Like the pressure shifts.

Like something deep in my chest tightens and then pulls.

My breath catches sharply, my hand flying to my chest.

His eyes lock onto mine.

And everything inside me snaps.

It doesn't hurt.

It doesn't overwhelm me.

It just settles.

A quiet, absolute certainty that sinks into my bones like it's always been there.

Like I've been walking around half empty my whole life and only just realized it.

"Oh," I breathe.

My heart starts racing.

This is it.

His expression doesn't match mine.

That's the first thing I notice, even if I don't fully understand it yet.

There's no shock. No awe.

Just stillness.

Measured.

Like he's looking at me instead of feeling it.

Like he's been waiting.

I take a step toward him anyway.

"I—" I let out a small, breathless laugh. "I think—"

The words tangle in my throat.

His mouth curves.

Not quite a smile.

"Vivienne," he says.

My name.

It shouldn't feel strange. Teachers know names.

But the way he says it slides over my skin like something intimate.

Possessive.

My breath stutters.

"I'm Sebastian."

The bond pulses at his name. Warm. Right. It spreads through me so fast it makes me dizzy.

It makes me want to trust him.

"You feel it too, right?" I ask, softer now, trying to steady myself.

He watches me for a moment.

Then nods.

"Yes."

Relief crashes through me so quickly I almost laugh.

"Oh my god," I whisper. "I didn't think—it's my birthday, I just turned eighteen today and I thought maybe but I didn't want to get my hopes up and—"

I stop, shaking my head.

"Sorry. I'm rambling."

"I don't mind," he says.

His voice is calm. Even.

Grounding.

It steadies me more than it should.

I take a slow breath. "So... what do we do now?"

There's a pause.

Something thoughtful settles over his expression, like he's choosing his words carefully.

"We don't rush," he says.

I blink. "We don't?"

He shakes his head slightly. "No. This—" his gaze flicks to my chest, like he can feel the bond too "—this is permanent. There's no reason to overwhelm you on the first day."

Something in me softens immediately.

That feels right.

Safe.

"I don't want to take anything from you," he continues. "Your life, your routine. You're eighteen, Vivienne. You deserve to experience that."

My throat tightens unexpectedly.

No one's ever really said something like that to me before.

"Okay," I say quietly.

"But," he adds, gentler now, "I would like to see you again. Outside of school. Somewhere you feel comfortable."

Not a command.

An invitation.

But it still feels important.

Like this moment matters more than anything else.

"I'd like that," I say.

And I mean it.

A small smile touches his mouth.

"Good."

The bell rings, loud and sudden, echoing down the hallway.

I jump slightly.

"You should go," he says, stepping back. "I don't want you getting in trouble on your birthday."

I hesitate.

"Will I—um... how do I find you?"

"I'll find you," he says easily.

Something about that should feel strange.

Instead it feels like relief.

Like I don't have to worry about anything anymore.

"Okay," I say.

I turn and head down the hallway, my heart still racing, the bond warm in my chest, my thoughts spinning in soft, dizzy circles.

This isn't how I imagined it.

It's quieter.

Gentler.

Better.

I don't feel like I'm the one holding everything together.

Behind me, I can feel his gaze linger.

Steady.

Unmoving.

Like something has already been decided.

And I don't question it.

Not yet.
