Noooooooooo why me?

So.... Hi. I'm Sky. Last name? Pffff, who cares about that? But anyways, lemme introduce you to my home, the world of Sternenflug! Here, everything is centered around one person, called the protagonist. And well, to my distaste, when the last one died of old age.... I became the new one. Pretty visible symbol on my cheek just popped up, and suddenly everyone around me gets new roles. I used to be in the category of a side character. It was pretty decent. Just a normal human, shitty life, but at least friends, and at least not in the monster category. Because those who dive too deep become insane and obsessed with breaking the system. Their bodies mutate as the world itself begins rejecting them, and the void beyond it takes them in.
Personally though, I couldn't care less. I had nothing to do with the earlier protagonist, nor did this whole thing affect my life. But right now, it does. Cause right now I'm sitting in a cafe and people are staring, knowing who I am. Knowing my name. Because, well, being the protagonist means I'll develop some powers and stuff and then go on to fight against villains.
