Pro- Choice vs. Pro- Life

Hey Guys,

I think it's important to clarify the actual meanings of pro-choice and pro-life. Quite a few of you are claiming to be pro-choice, when in face you are pro-life.

Pro-choice doesn't need a reason for a mother to determine that motherhood is not for her. So for those saying ki's choice wasn't enough, you should actually examine to see whether you are pro-life.

This is not to debate whether ki's decision was wrong or not. But to inform you all of the true meanings so you can determine where you stand. I know a lot of you are young and don't fully understand the concept.

Below are some definitions sites that might clarify your understanding. If you have any more questions about meaning of words please feel free to ask me loves!

Fyi- I think they should make a category for the in betweeners. Because true pro-choicers feel there is nothing that depends. A woman always has the right. So to say it depends takes you out of that category . That's what I was taught when I was a member of students for choice on my campus.

What Does Pro-Choice Mean to You?

To be pro-choice is to support self-determination to make decisions free from judgment.

Pro-Choice is the responsibility to yourself and the freedom to decide to take control of your own life process.

Pro-Choice is not just about reproduction but the freedom to decide your life course with the support and respect of others. It represents power and pride in self.

We feel pro-choice is a complex process - it's not just about abortion, but about birth control, or having a child - it's about all reproductive choices. It's access to information we need, can gather and understand, and can reach our own decisions without interference. And it's about who makes the final decision, not a judge or the government, but the woman. It's about having options and celebrating freedom.

Pro-Choice represents a respectful climate in which all individuals and families have the ability to take responsibility for their own reproductive destiny.

Pro-Choice is an ideology that supports the right to make a decision and support the decision itself.

Pro-Choice is the ability to make your own life choices not only about reproductive freedom but also the right to choose our own individuality and how to conduct our lives.

Pro-Choice is the freedom to do what you want to do with your body, respecting other women's choices, then remaining pro-active to keep choices legal.

Pro-Choice is having the power and knowledge to pursue and achieve spiritual, physical, emotional, mental and reproductive freedom.

The above definitions were crafted at the staff retreat of Feminist Women's Health Center in October 2002.

Following are more from women who obtained abortion services at our clinics or sent by website visitors:

What does pro-choice mean to you?

Pro-choice means you decide. I don't decide for you, you don't decide for me.

I don't believe in letting anyone make important decisions for me - no one can tell me when it's time for me to be a mom or create a life.

Pro Life vs Pro Choice on the Rights of Women

Pro Choice:
It's my body, and I have the right to do with it what I want.

Pro Life: Argument
When you are pregnant, there is another body ... the baby's body. Nobody should have the right to tear a baby's body into pieces.

Pro Choice: Argument
Even if the preborn has an inherent right to life, this right is superceded by the mother's right to autonomy.

Pro Life:
Nobody has an unconstrained right to autonomy. We require parents to use their bodies to care for their children. This responsibility lasts for 18 years.

Pro Choice:
If a woman is pregnant by rape, compassion demands that she be allowed to abort.

Pro Life:
As horrible as abortion is, the baby is still innocent of any crime. Nobody should be killed for the crime of another person. Abortion does not undo or mitigate the rape, and there is evidence that abortion further compounds the harm that has already been done to her.
