Dr. Park is currently standing at my doorway, Korean takeout in his hand. I can smell the marinades and such from my quite uncomfortable hospital bed.
It smells pretty good, not going to lie.
Well, at least compared to the blended up slush they've been feeding me since my surgery. Dr. Letterman told me I could start eating solids again today.
I think Dr. Park is watching my eyes flutter open and closed over from the doorway. My head is still in pain, so I've been sleeping a lot.
"Dr. Letterman okayed you to eat solids this morning."
I nod and take in a harsh, deep breath, noticing the heavy saliva that has been collecting at the back of my throat.
"You hungry?" he asks.
I look up into his dark eyes. Black hair is combed to the side, and smiles are scattered left and right, jolting up every so often.
"Yeah," I mumble out.
He walks over to my bedside in his mint colored scrubs.
He opens up the box, and my senses are taken over by an unknown smell. They scrunch up in confusion.
"Daeji Bulgogi," he says. "It's a Korean pork dish. I figured we'd start simple."
He brings the fork to my mouth and I open wide, revealing unbrushed yellowish teeth that haven't been cleaned since yesterday.
"Sorry if my teeth are gross," I say.
"Don't even worry about it."
My eyes smile at him as he puts the fork to my tongue. My mouth closes. As he swipes it away, a string of saliva is left to drag along.
I have trouble chewing, but at this point I could care less. A wave of bold savory flavors washes over my tongue, leaving behind a tingling feeling; no, sensation.
"That's good," I say.
"I know."
There is a moment contained in silence, but it's soon interrupted.
"Has anybody found out who I am yet?" I ask.
He looks away and down to the floor. His eyes waver there before they flit up to meet mine.
"No."
My heart falls, tumbles actually, rolling into a never ending cycle, a never ending game, and I realize I'm losing.
I'm losing faith.
