Chapter 25

Flirting's not my thing

>>>Carter

Two weeks have passed, and now it was the ending of November, which meant it was time for the weather to freeze my ass off. It doesn't snow here in Regional Hills; at least it hasn't for years, and when it does it's a rare occasion in December that's only happened three times in my life time. I hated this time of the year for one reason only.

I hated the cold. Dressing in at least two layers of clothing didn't go well for me, for I felt very uncomfortable in it. During classes, it's so hard to stay awake when the coolness in the air was practically a lullaby for you to take a nice long afternoon nap and imagine the softness of a warm wonderful bed. Your eyes would flutter every two seconds, and when you couldn't handle it anymore you'd just close it entirely for a moment as you entirely forget where you are as you relish in that feeling.

And as I heard someone clear his throat in an obvious attempt to get someone else's attention, I think blanking out is exactly what I did.

So, apparently, Mr. Donovan has asked me a question, because as I scanned the classroom from where I sat in the middle; everyone's eyes were glued on me like I owed them money, and with Mr. Donovan's hard core glare in the front directed right at me; it was safe to say I was the culprit of his annoyance.

Shit. The last thing I need is this teacher on my case today.

"Well Mr. Summers?" He asked, crossing his arms as snickers from the sadistic students enveloped the room. Seriously, I hate these awkward moments. Okay let's see, we were talking about the equations of a curved and straight line... equations one to four were already answered on the board, so that means I was supposed to answer number five... which I didn't do damn it. I hear a soft cough to my right, making me glance down to see Genevieve turning her notebook in my direction as she points to her answer secretly not looking at me. This is a good friend, I smiled, looking up quickly so Mr. Donovan wouldn't be suspicious.

"The gradient is 3.5, so the equation would be y=3.5x+12." I say, causing Mr. Donovan to narrow his eyes before sighing in disappointment, meaning I got it right.

"Correct." He grits out as I held in the urge to laugh in satisfaction, oh I loved putting him in his place. "Ms. Mauricio would you answer question number-"

The bell rang, making the whole class sigh in relief at the sound, and for once I felt the same way they do. I hated this man's classes. He always looked for some small issue to send me out of the class or get me in trouble. It was childish, and stupid, but hey what can I do? He was a teacher.

"I swear." Genevieve whispered so only I would hear as we both got up from our desks and started our way outside in the crowded halls. "One of these days I'm going to tell Mr. Donovan to just stick it up his homophobic ass."

"And then you'll be the one in trouble." I chuckled at her murderous gaze. "Seriously though, let it go. I'm used to it."

"After graduation I know what I'm doing." She nods determinedly, ignoring my statement for her to stop worrying about it as I rolled my eyes. "I'll break every window in his car,"

"That's called vandalism, and you'll go to jail." I point out as we continue to stroll through the crowded halls together.

"Then," she continues, completely ignoring what I was trying to say. "I'll go all Carrie Underwood on his tires and dig my key onto the side of his pretty little sopped-up four wheel drive."

"Eve stop." I say, not holding it back anymore as I laugh out loud at her craziness. Now every time I hear that song I'll laugh like a mad-man. We both stop in front of Mrs. Jazz's classroom, entering after I opened the door only to find it empty.

"Aw man Mrs. Jazlyn's not here." Eve pouts in disappointment. "Dang it, who am I going to fangirl with about Mockingjay part two coming out tomorrow?"

"Really?" I say incredulously, looking at her as she shrugs innocently as if wondering what she did wrong. I really don't understand fangirls I swear. "I read the series you know, so I can tell you who's gonna die and-"

"La la la!" She sings, covering her ears with both palms, before pointing at me menacingly. "No spoilers! I will personally murder you if you even try it! Don't mess with me."

I roll my eyes, "Yes mam."

"Good." She smiles like she didn't just threatened to murder me as we both sat down in front of the teacher's desk like we normally do during lunch. I set my backpack on my lap to search for my lunch kit containing my food. "What did you bring for lunch Carter?"

"Well I made grilled-cheese this morning. Want one?" I offer, unwrapping the foil around my sandwiches.

"Aren't you the sweet one." Eve awes, as I crack out a smile in response when she takes it. "So, are you going to watch the Movie tomorrow?"

"Nah." I shake my head taking a bite out of my sandwich. "I don't watch Book to movie adaptation. Especially if it's a book I really like."

"Really? Why?" she asks curiously snacking on her own lunch as I groan at the question.

"If I answer that I'll take up the entire lunch period." I warn in a very serious tone.

"Now I'm curious, so you have to tell me." she smiled, scooting her chair closer before looking at me expectantly.

"Alright. You asked for it, but if I start ranting you stop me." I say as she nods in response. "I get... personally offended at movies that don't do a good job with books that I read, and I've been reading since my first word, so let's just say that there's a lot of them that already ticked me off."

"Dang." Eve laughed with a mouthful of food before coughing a little. When she swallowed, she politely clears her throat before glancing at my confused features. "You're crazy."

"Why?"

"I prefer to watch the movies than read the book. That's how I pass Literature."

"Why?" I ask with a questioning glance. "Books give details."

"Movies give action." She points out.

"Books give personalities."

"Movies give hot actors."

"True." I agree. "But imagination is better."

"Movies are better." She argues as she continues to eat peacefully. "Have you even seen the first three Hunger games movies. They're awesome."

"Ah No." I deadpanned. "If it's crap I'll personally hunt down the producer and shoot him. When I was twelve I remember watching Lightening thief-"

"Ugh that demigod crap?" she twist her face in disgust as if my taste in movies was off by a million and one.

"Exactly my point!" I snap as her eyes widened at the outburst. "Someone like you doesn't understand the story, because of the dumbass movie."

"Oh my Lana." Eve giggled at my angry expression. "The only reason I even made it to the end was because of how cute Logan Lerman is."

"He wasn't even twelve in that sorry excuse of a movie." I huffed out as Eve raises a brow as if to say 'Seriously?' "Don't judge me. Percy Jackson was my number one book crush at that time. Lerman ruined it for me."

"He's from a book." She laughed almost coughing on her lunch.

"It's the same as you 'Dating' Theo James, cause we both know it's never happening." I retort back.

"Touché." She muttered. "But come on I bet you'd like it."

"I'd rather not."

"Mmm Hmm." She hums mischievously as if she knew something I didn't. "We'll see."

"You're up to something." I point out, only to get her the whistle innocently before searching around the room like it was suddenly so much more interesting. "Genevieve."

"You know books really do suck. I don't get how people read them."

"Hey!" I defend, but stopped myself from arguing when I realized that she was only trying to distract me making me narrow my eyes at the attempt. "Don't change the topic."

"I'm not." She says, but the giddy look in her eyes told me otherwise. "Besides you'll find out sooner or later."

"Yeah right." I muttered causing her to wink in response.

"We should change this topic. So?" she cackles, crossing her arms giddily as a Cheshire cat grin took place on her face.

"So what?" I sigh even though I knew exactly where this was going.

"How's the boyfriend?" she asks as the heat took less than a second to make its way on my face. I hated when that happens. Nolan, who may I say is certainly not my boyfriend, has been away on a tournament with his football team since Tuesday, and I wasn't too sure when they'd be back. We did not make anything official. In fact, we just went back to how we usually were... well, sort of. There were a few things that were new, like random talks, messaging and calls that weren't school related, but I'd say that's as far as it goes.

"He's not my boyfriend." I simply say, mentally slapping myself for how easily my pulse quickened at the word.

"Yet. You forgot to add the word 'Yet' at the end of that sentence. You two are so freaking slowwww." She says, stretching the word slow for about a whole minute before halting for fresh air.

"Well I'm not going out with someone so fast like some other people." I grinned as her face flustered at that.

"Leave Amira out of this." She points menacingly as I snort at how futile that gesture was to me now that I'm used to it.

"Why? She's your girlfriend." I stick my tongue out, making her blush a brighter cherry red.

"I'm interrogating you. Leave my love life out of this."

"Why?" I chuckled at her flustered expression. "You're the only one here with one, so why not talk about yours."

"The only reason you don't have one is because you're so stubborn."

"I like being stubborn." I shrug as she sighs in disappointment before muttering something under her breath.

"That boy is sweet to you, and the way you act just-ugh! You're impossible."

I smiled. "So I've been told."

The rest of lunch went by smoothly, especially when Genevieve stopped interrogating me about a non-existent relationship that she says is taking too long to happen. The bell rang, making us both groan tiredly at the death call that signaled us to go back to class.

"I hate my life sometimes." I muttered, packing my lunch remains into my kit before placing it within my bag.

"What life do we have?" she questioned as I playfully nudged her shoulders. "What do you have next?"

"Biology." I answer, getting up from the chair as she mirrors the action. "You?"

"I have a Literature test." She sighs. "I hope that movie didn't lie to me last night, or I'm screwed this semester."

"Try picking up the book."

"Not happening, I barely stayed awake for the movie imagine reading the thing." She shutters as if just the thought scared her. "Well I better get going. What are we doing tonight?"

"I was thinking of taking a break from Teen Wolf. My heart still hasn't healed from the last episode of season three." I say dramatically clutching a palm over my heart. Eve just snorts before shaking her head in disagreement.

"To be honest I didn't even like Alison."

"Hey she was the best! They made a mistake getting rid of her." I defend making Genevieve roll her eyes in response as we head towards the door.

"Okay before we start another war, let's get to class." She sticks her tongue out playfully as I returned the gesture in the same manner. I love this friend of mine, but if she messes with my show I'll fight. "To be continued then Allison lover." She announces when we start heading down in the halls with rushing students that were hasting to their own class.

"Go to class hater." I chuckle as we went in our separate directions.

.........................

Last period for the day, I thought as I walked smoothly towards my next class.

I was literally a couple of steps away from the entrance to the classroom door when I almost jumped out of my skin feeling the vibration of my cell phone within the pocket of my pants.

Bzzzz bzzzzzz

"What the hell." I say in shock at the sudden feeling, taking my Nokia out quickly to make it stop buzzing. I unlocked the password with a couple of numbers as I saw the little icon that indicated there was a message. I raise a brow in confusion as I thought about my options, Ms. Jazz only texted to tell me there were more questions to be answered and she wasn't in school, I just saw Eve, so that leaves.... Oh boy. "Is he crazy?" I muttered, ignoring the weird out glances I got from fellow classmates that went their way as I opened the message out of curiosity.

'Miss me?' It stated as I rolled my eyes before typing an answer to the idiot.

'Get over yourself.'

I then huffed incredulously after placing my phone back in my jeans pocket, entering the classroom as I ignored the way my face suddenly felt hot. Texting during my classes? He's got to have brain damage or something, bastard.

Buzzzz buzzzz

Really? It's a good thing I have it on vibrate or I'd personally choke the life out of him for letting me get caught by a teacher with this thing.

I made my way towards my desk that was second to the last row in the back. The Chemistry teacher, Mrs. Marina, wasn't here as yet, and to be honest, I don't think she will be, for most days she was out sick. Chemistry was usually just reading about formulas and do work she assigned by a replacement, but no one was here. I glanced around to see that everyone has pretty much taken this period as a free one the way they were socializing, or sleeping in their own corner. One guy was outright listening to his headphones like he didn't have a care in the world.

Now I'm just bored, I concluded, setting my head on the desk as the classroom filled with random chatter.

Buzzzzz buzzzz

I sighed, scanning around to the other students who were doing their own thing by talking, texting and even listening to music; no one was paying me any attention so why not? I take out my phone, unlocking the screen as I curiously opened the message.

'You basically just answered my question by answering in less than a minute while you're still in school Summer. Were you expecting a text?'

I huffed out a small laugh while I typed in a reply. 'You are so full of it Drake.'

'Why thank you.' He answered back, making me roll my eyes at the comment.

'Wasn't a compliment.'

'From you it might as well be.'

'True.' I agreed, holding back the grin that threatened to appear on my features. 'What's up with the games?'

'The last one was this morning.' He answered after a minute or so, not that I was counting of course. 'We're on our way back in the school bus, but Coach and I have to come back to school.'

'How'd they go?'

'Second place overall.' He announced, not a minute after I asked.

I couldn't help but smile a little. 'Not bad.'

'Really?' he texted as a confused thought took place in my head before he sent another text. 'No "good job darling?" '

I choked on nothing but air, clearing my throat in a quiet motion before replying. 'In your dreams Drake.'

'Ha. In my dreams you aren't calling me darling.' I read as I felt my face outright flush from that. It took a few seconds for me to gain composure as I sent another.

'I'm not even going to ask, so I'll just say... Ew.' Was all I managed to text back as I ignored the beating in my chest when another buzz vibrated in my palms almost immediately.

'If you think I meant anything dirty by that, then no I didn't.'

I scoffed disbelievingly before simply replying. 'Right...'

'I'm serious.' He sent first before another message came out. 'You're just a dirty minded person for thinking it :p'

'Well if you know what I thought you meant, and that's a big IF, then what does that make you?'

'Oh no Summer, the difference is I know I'm a dirty minded person. You on the other hand, are too innocent for your own good.'

'You know what?' I sent first before texting the other part. 'I'll take that as a compliment.' To be honest I didn't even know how to take it. I mean come on... Me? Innocent? I don't know about that, but I guess it was meant to be one so I'll just go with that. Almost instantly, I received another text.

'You're too cute sometimes I swear.'

My hands froze from sending another answer as my eyes widened from reading it.

What... did he... just... What?

My eyes scanned the message over and over again in bafflement as if I couldn't read or comprehend it as another text came in.

'Shit did I send that? Opps.'

I can practically hear his conceited chuckle that he always lets out when I got flustered. I didn't know how to answer that, so I just continued to stare at the small screen as I bit my lip in embarrassment. He knew exactly what he was doing to me even tough he wasn't here. Now that's not fair. Once again, my phone indicated I received another text, make me gulp in nervousness before opening it.

'Can't take a little flirting Summer?'

I blinked at that. Flirting?

'Is that what you call flirting?' My fingers started to text before sending.

'Not really,' he answers honestly. 'Because if I did, you'd get all flustered, and to be honest I don't want to miss it, cause I like seeing you blush.'

My face went warm at that, and as if he knew what was happening, another message came in.

'Fuck. I shouldn't have sent that. You're probably blushing right now.'

Oh this conceited little- ugh! Why did I let him get the better of my feelings?

Shaking my head from side to side, I gain some type of self-composure over my flustered self as I started to text.

'I'll just let you know that flirting is not my thing, so don't expect me to even try that.'

'Oh really? ;)'

I had to read that a couple of times until I finally got the message. Oh no... he wouldn't. He wouldn't. He wouldn't even dare-

'Well let's see... I got two A's under my belt so I think I'll use one.'

I walked right into that one.

"Bastard." I say out loud, causing a guy seated next to me to raise a brow as if I was crazy to be talking to myself. I ignored the questioning gaze as I see another message came in.

'Text me something either flirty, cute, or sweet. At least I'm giving options.'

Oh I hate him. I'm not even kidding right now when I say I'm going to personally take a brick, slam it on his head to knock him out, and bury him alive where no one would find the body. Flirty my ass. I'm going to strangle him for doing this, cause if he doesn't die, he'll never let me live this down.

'Remember,' I read as another text came in. 'Your words. 'No matter how crazy' :p'

I pinched the bridge of my nose in an agitated manner. Why did I do this to myself? I picked up the phone, texting every word spitefully as I ignored the way the redness was probably rising in my face. He wasn't even here and I'm acting like this. Way to go Carter. Way to go.

'Fine.' I sent first as I thought for a second, but the idiot didn't even wait for me to continue as his own text came in again.

'Since you're thinking so hard I'll help you out. Start with the words 'I miss you.'

'You're enjoying this aren't you?'

'Very.' Was his simple reply making me roll my eyes at the one word answer.

'I won't mean it.' I warned.

'Sure you won't Summer.'

'Good.' I texted. 'Glad you know.'

'Well I'm waiting. Do you miss me?'

I'm so going to kill him, I concluded. My fingers clicked on the letters hesitantly as I made plans for his funeral within my head.

'Of course I miss you Drake darling.'

Now, as I personally wait for someone to put me out of my misery, I wait for his answer.

One minute...

Two...

Four...

Eight...

He doesn't answer.

"What's up with him?" I muttered, staring at the screen for one of his immediate replies I've gotten used to for the last couple of weeks. He never takes this long to answer when we're talking I wonder what's-

"Hello class." A male voice announced entering the classroom as students immediately make their way to their assigned seats as others scrambled to hide their electronic devices; including me as I quickly place my phone within my pocket before taking out a random book from my bag.

My mind wasn't really here at the moment, so I wasn't aware of who had entered the room until I look up to see Patrick Price jaunting his way into the classroom quite confidently as I groan in annoyance.

Yes. He's still here.

Apparently, he's just here to help the students wanting to enter that internship thing going on, but he also steps in when a teacher is absent like a substitute.

Just my luck right?

"Sorry to disappoint the free period guys, but Mrs. Marina says she has some work for you to complete." He announces, darting his eyes around the back until it came to a small pause where I was.

I showed zero emotion as I suck my middle finger up for him to see, making him avoid my gaze for the rest of the period. Let's just say I was still pissed. Even more so when I had to come to school, and see his face again.

I worked on the Chemistry assignment Mrs. Marina had given in silence. My mind all jumbled as I tried to focus on how many moles there were in 186 grams of Sodium Chloride, but a small part of me wondered why Nolan hasn't answered yet.

Buzzz buzzzz

I smirked. You ask for the devil, and he might appear.

I glanced in the front at Patrick before surveying the room. Everyone was busy doing their own thing, so in haste I pull out my phone and placed it between my legs in an angle no one would notice as I read two text from him.

'You were right.' The first one said making me raise a curious brow as I read the other one.

'Flirting's not your thing.'

I roll my eyes at that, but then saw a next message appearing below it.

'But why did you have to send that... now I'm hot, bothered and flustered.'

I swear it took all the strength I had to not lose it and just laugh like a maniac by what he said as I typed in a quick reply.

'Are you embarrassed Drake?'

'You did that on purpose.'

I grinned, glancing around to make sure the coast was clear once more as I answered.

'Sorry... Darling.'

He doesn't answer for the rest of the class.

...............

"Give me fifteen more minutes." Eve states before turning back to her phone.

"I've been giving you fifteen minutes for the past hour Genevieve." I groan out in annoyance as she twirls her hair in a fidgety manner while talking to her girlfriend on the phone. It's been like this since she got the call, and I'm here sitting on the floor within empty hallways on a Friday, because my ride home is flirting.

"I'm going to the vending machine." I announced, getting off the floor as she simply waves me off with a giddy smile still plastered on her face.

I smile at her awe struck expression. It was sweet and gross at the same time how happy she was right now. I turn around and start down the stairway to the first floor, humming to myself a random tune as I jump the stairs two by two.

Then my phone vibrated, and I couldn't help but let out a small grin as I stop in the middle of the stairs to search through my pockets. I pull it out, unlocking the screen in a quick manner as I realized it was a call, not a text.

I huff out a small, yet nervous breath, looking at the familiar number on the screen before clicking on the icon to answer.

"Oh now you want to talk?" I say casually, hiding the excitement in my voice as he chuckles on the other side.

"Hey to you too." Nolan says, his voice reaching an octave lower the way it usually does when on the phone. I'd rather not admit that I like hearing it though.

"Hey," I say back, forgetting all about my snack craving as I simply sat down on the staircase. "I'm serious though, what's with the missing in action during the texts? Got too embarrassed?"

He scoffs on the other line, "You, of all people, called me Darling and expect me to not be shocked and stare at my phone and check over and over again to make sure I was texting the right person?"

"Yeah." I laugh out awkwardly. "Let's not talk about that. I only did that the second time to make you get flustered for a change."

"Well it worked." I hear him mutter as if I wasn't supposed to hear that.

"Sorry what was that?" I grinned even though I did hear what he said.

"I didn't say anything." He lied smoothly making me roll my eyes in response. Of course he won't admit it.

"So what's with the sudden call?" I ask after a few minutes of us just going back and forth on random topics.

Nolan sighs tiredly. "Can't a guy just call to hear your voice?"

My pulse quickened at that.

"Well..." I say after a small stretch of silence. "I guess not."

"You're blushing aren't you?" he chuckled, making the heat instantly take over my face in a quick second.

"No I'm not." I insisted, making him chuckle even louder at that like he saw straight through that straight out lie.

"Liar."

"How would you know?"

"Cause I know you well enough."

Yeah too well that it was starting to scare me.

"Hey Summer?" he asks as I instantly paid attention to the sudden chance within his tone. If I didn't know any better... I'd say he was nervous.

"Yeah I'm listening." I confirm, and for some reason I became nervous as well.

"I want to use my other 'A'" he admits as I let out a relieved sigh. I thought he was going to ask something I sure as hell wasn't ready for yet.

"What is it? Do I have to cosplay now?" I joke causing him to hum in thought like he was actually thinking about it.

"No... but I'll keep that in mind for another time."

Good job Carter. You put the idea in his head.

"I want to take you out."

And the nerves are back.

"W-Wait a second." I start, face palming myself with my free hand for stuttering. "Are you sure-"

"Do not ask me if I'm sure about this." He cuts me of immediately making me shiver from the sound of his voice so demanding like that.

"Alright." I assure, biting my lip in embarrassment at this. Were we really going to do this? I mean, we've pretty much made it known how we felt about each other, but still... I was worried.

"So... it's a date?" he asks almost like he was trying the word on his tongue for the first time.

I let out a soft sigh, and being the way I am, I wasn't going to make it that easy.

"Ask me in person and then we'll talk." I tell him as I press the phone near my cheek. Surprisingly, there was a sound of laughter that sounded as if it was being held back.

"I was hoping you'd say that." He says, and I knew that mischievous tone in his voice was there almost instantly.

I raise a curious brow. "How come?"

"Turn around."

My feet jumped from the steps as I stood up, turning around to meet the empty upper part of the staircase as a look of confusion and disappointment takes place on my face. I shake my head before placing the phone back to my ears.

"Turn around for what?" I ask, placing the phone near my ear again as I tried to hide the disappointment in my voice.

The line went dead.

"Ugh. Seriously?" I grunt in annoyance, placing the phone back in my pocket as I mentally curse Nolan in all the ways possible. He asks something like that then hangs up?

Times like this I don't remember why I like him.

"Well don't you look disappointed." A familiar voice chuckled making me snap my attention back to the bottom of the staircase. His smug look as he held onto his phone with hand, and a large duffle bag hanging across his shoulders made my face warm at the sight.

Okay now I remembered.

"You knew I was here." I say, holding back the giddy smile that wanted to break way on my features. I won't let him see how happy it made me to see him after a few days. He wouldn't let me live it down.

"Well." He shrugs, setting the bag onto the tiled floors without a care as he started towards me. "I may or may not have asked Genevieve to keep you here until I got back."

Note to self, Eve and I were going to have a very long conversation later.

"How come?" I ask, looking down when my face started to take on a hotter temperature as he got closer.

"Because," he starts, stopping just a step lower from where I was, making me momentarily taller since I was two steps in front. "I knew you'd want me to ask in person."

I look at him, peering down into his green gaze that held me so transfixed as I smiled a little. I find myself doing that a lot around him lately.

"Well you, and that traitor I call a friend, kept me here long enough. So what do you have to tell me?" I state, crossing my arms in a childish manner. I watched as he climbed a step up for us to be eye level with that smug grin on his features.

He surprised the hell out of me by slinging a strong arm around my waist, making me gasp as I lost my balance on the step to only land even closer to his larger frame that kept me still.

"I'm not repeating myself Summer." He says just inches away letting me gulp as my pulse clambered inside my chest at the sudden closeness. "So?"

"Do I have a choice in this?" I ask, making him raise a brow in confusion. "I mean... you were going to use a favor so-"

"I'm giving you the choice as a guy that likes you." He cuts me off, leaning in to rest his forehead on mine as my face heated in its annoying way from the confession.

I look up shyly into honest green gaze as an urge to do something crazy took over. My chest heaved in nervousness as I leaned over to peck his nose in a quick attempt to be the sweet one for once.

I pull back, watching in amusement as Nolan touched his nose with his left palm that wasn't wrapped around me.

"It's a date then Drake." I chuckle triumphantly, because that's the first time I made him blush.
