Morning light spilled through the heavy curtains, cutting through the shadows in the room like a knife. I blinked against the brightness, disoriented for a moment as I tried to remember where I was. It all came rushing back in a torrent of memory—Ezra's betrayal, Damon's cold gaze, the mansion looming like a fortress around me.

I sat up in bed, the sheets tangling around my legs. My heart raced as I looked around, taking in the opulence of my surroundings. The room was large and beautifully decorated, with rich fabrics and elegant furniture. A four-poster bed stood in the center, its dark wood gleaming in the sunlight. A plush rug lay beneath my feet, but even the luxury felt alien. I was a prisoner in a gilded cage.

Swinging my legs over the side of the bed, I hesitated. I wasn't sure what awaited me beyond the door, but I had to know. I had to find out what Damon wanted from me. Gathering my courage, I pushed myself up and padded toward the door, my bare feet brushing against the cool hardwood floor.

Taking a deep breath, I opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The air was still, but I could hear faint sounds in the distance—a low murmur of voices, the rustle of footsteps. The mansion felt alive, and my senses tingled with unease.

I moved cautiously, peering into the rooms I passed. Each one was more lavish than the last—sitting rooms with oversized couches, a library filled with leather-bound books, a dining room that could seat a small army. It was beautiful, yes, but it was also cold. I felt the weight of the walls closing in around me, each corner a reminder of my new reality.

As I wandered deeper into the mansion, I spotted a figure at the end of the hallway. A woman was moving about, arranging flowers in a vase on a small table. Her dark hair was pulled back in a neat bun, and she wore a crisp white uniform that made her look both professional and slightly intimidating.

"Excuse me," I said, my voice shaky. "Can you help me?"

She turned, her expression neutral as she regarded me. "You must be Aurelia," she replied. "I'm Clara, the housekeeper. I'll be responsible for seeing to your needs."

"Um, okay." I hesitated, searching for the right words. "Can you tell me what I'm supposed to do here? I mean, what... what are my duties?"

Clara raised an eyebrow but didn't answer immediately. Instead, she turned back to the flowers, adjusting them with precise movements. "You'll be shown your responsibilities shortly. For now, I suggest you get dressed. Mr. Rossi will expect you to be presentable."

I winced at the mention of Damon. "Right." I didn't like the idea of being "presentable" for him. But I nodded anyway, trying to swallow the unease that twisted in my stomach. "Thank you, Clara."

As she continued with her work, I retreated back to my room, my heart racing. I rummaged through the closet, finding a selection of clothes that seemed tailored for someone much more sophisticated than me—silk blouses, tailored skirts, and elegant dresses that looked like they belonged in a fashion magazine.

I settled on a simple black dress that fell just below my knees, its fabric soft against my skin. After pulling my hair into a loose bun, I took one last look in the mirror. I looked composed, maybe even elegant, but inside, I felt like a fraud.

Once dressed, I made my way back into the hallway, the soft padding of my feet echoing in the stillness. My pulse quickened as I approached the large double doors at the end of the hall, the ones that led to the sitting room where I'd first met Damon.

Pushing the doors open, I stepped inside, my breath catching at the sight before me. Damon stood by the fireplace, his back turned, seemingly lost in thought. The way the sunlight filtered through the windows, casting shadows across his broad shoulders, made him appear almost ethereal.

But I knew better. This was the man who held my fate in his hands.

"Good morning," I said, trying to keep my voice steady as I crossed the threshold.

He turned slowly, his dark eyes locking onto mine, and for a moment, the air felt charged between us. "You look... acceptable," he said, his tone flat, but there was an intensity in his gaze that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Thank you?" I replied, unsure how to respond. I didn't want to give him any more power over me, but it was hard to ignore the way he made my skin prickle with awareness.

"Today, you will begin your training," he said, breaking the tension. "There are rules you need to learn, expectations you must meet."

"Training?" I echoed, my heart racing again. "For what?"

"For your role here," he replied, his expression unreadable. "You need to understand how to behave in my world, Aurelia. It's not as simple as you think."

I bristled at his condescension. "And what if I refuse?"

He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming as he leaned down slightly, bringing his face closer to mine. "Refusal isn't an option. You're here now, and it would be wise to embrace your new circumstances."

I straightened my spine, forcing myself to meet his gaze. "You can't control me, Damon. I won't just fall in line."

A flicker of something—interest, perhaps?—crossed his face. "We'll see about that."

He turned away, dismissing me with an air of finality that left me fuming. My heart raced with a mixture of anger and fear, but I couldn't let him see that. I had to find a way to regain some semblance of control, some way to carve out a space for myself in this new life.

"Come," he said, motioning for me to follow. "It's time to begin."

With a deep breath, I stepped forward, my resolve hardening. I may have been trapped in his world, but I wouldn't lose myself. Not yet.
