The marketplace of Etherin was alive with magical chaos. Banners fluttered in the breeze, and merchants peddled their strange, enchanted wares, trying to convince anyone passing by that they held the key to their dreams—whether it was a potion for endless luck or a mirror that showed the future. Amid the colorful noise and confusion, Pond Athaenael wandered the stalls, his face masked with an air of casual curiosity.

But behind that carefree demeanor, Pond was anything but ordinary. Though he appeared to be just another wandering mage, his true identity was far more significant: Pond was a prince from the kingdom of Solara, one of the most powerful realms in the region. And today, he was on an undercover mission, scouting Etherin to ensure that none of the growing threats between kingdoms reached his homeland. His position was delicate—too delicate to go without his two most trusted companions and bodyguards, Joong and Dunk.

"Why did I agree to this mission?" Pond muttered under his breath as he dodged a vendor thrusting a jar of suspiciously glowing mushrooms in his face.

This wasn’t the first time Pond had to operate under the guise of a traveling mage. It kept him off the radar of the political spies scattered across the continent and allowed him to move freely without being recognized as the heir to the throne. But that didn’t make it any less irritating.

Before he could dwell on his annoyance any longer, a sudden burst of commotion caught his attention. A ripple of gasps and shouts echoed through the marketplace, and out of the corner of his eye, Pond saw a white blur darting through the crowd like a flash of lightning.

Pond barely had time to process what was happening before the blur—a small, fluffy white cat—crashed into his legs with such force that he nearly toppled over. The cat glanced up at him with wide, panicked blue eyes before scrambling under his cloak as if it were a lifeline.

"What the—"

Before he could finish the thought, a group of armored men—clearly royal guards—shoved their way through the crowd, their eyes searching for something. Pond’s eyes flicked to their armor, marked with the crest of Aurion, and his mind started piecing things together quickly.

"Where is that cursed creature?" one of the guards bellowed, his sharp gaze scanning the crowd.

Pond tensed, instinctively straightening his posture. He knew full well that engaging with royal guards could get tricky—especially since he was in disguise. The guards’ description of a “cursed creature” made it clear they were after the cat now hiding beneath his cloak.

With a quick, composed movement, Pond pulled his cloak tighter, concealing the cat even further as the guards approached.

"You there, mage!" the lead guard growled, stepping forward. "Have you seen a white cat run through here? It’s cursed, and we’re under orders to bring it back to Aurion."

Pond raised an eyebrow, putting on his best indifferent expression. "A cat? No, haven’t seen one. Just browsing for magical supplies. You know, mage things."

The guard narrowed his eyes, clearly suspicious. "This is no ordinary cat. It’s dangerous—possibly harboring dark magic. If you’re hiding it, you’ll be in more trouble than you can imagine."

Pond held up his hands in mock innocence. "I assure you, I’m just minding my own business here. Dark magic? I wouldn’t even know where to start."

The guard sneered, clearly unimpressed, but after a tense moment, he motioned to his men to move on. As they left, Pond exhaled, slipping into a side alley to avoid further scrutiny.

Once in the shadows of the alley, Pond knelt and tugged his cloak aside, revealing the trembling ball of white fur curled at his feet.

"Alright, furball, why are the guards after you?"

The cat blinked up at him with wide, human-like eyes before sighing. "I’m cursed, obviously."

Pond nearly dropped the poor thing. "Wait—what?!" He gaped at the small cat, staring in disbelief. "You... you can talk?"

The cat—or rather, the person in the form of a cat—rolled its eyes. "Yes, I can talk. But that’s not the important part. My name’s Phuwin. I wasn’t always a cat."

Pond blinked, trying to wrap his head around this. "Phuwin?" He stared at the cat for a moment longer before something clicked. "Wait, you’re the prince from Aurion, aren’t you?"

Phuwin sighed, curling his tail around himself. "Yes. I was the prince of Aurion. Now I’m this."

"A cursed prince," Pond muttered, shaking his head in disbelief. "That explains why the guards were so desperate to catch you."

Phuwin bristled slightly. "Yeah, well, they’re not trying to ‘rescue’ me. They want me locked away because they think I’m dangerous. As if being turned into a cat wasn’t bad enough."

Pond chuckled. "I mean, it’s not the worst curse. You could’ve been turned into something... less cute."

Phuwin shot him a withering glare. "Trust me, it’s not as fun as it looks. Now, are you going to help me or not?"

Before Pond could respond, a pair of figures emerged from the shadows behind him. Joong and Dunk, his loyal bodyguards, had been keeping an eye on the situation from a distance, but now that the guards were gone, they stepped forward.

"Phum, are we seriously getting involved in this?" Joong asked, using Pond’s alias in public. "We’re supposed to be keeping a low profile."

"A prince of Solara, hiding a prince of Aurion. The political implications of this are... significant," Dunk added, his tone diplomatic as ever.

Pond waved them off. "Relax. No one knows who I am here. And besides, Phuwin here is in trouble. I’m not about to let him get carted off to some dungeon just because some jealous noble cursed him."

Phuwin’s ears perked up at the mention of a "jealous noble," but he didn’t comment, his gaze locked on Pond. "So... you’re going to help me?"

Pond shrugged, grinning. "Of course. But you owe me a favor when you’re back to normal. A big one."

Phuwin narrowed his eyes, but after a moment, he sighed. "Fine. Deal."

Joong rolled his eyes. "Great. Now we’re tangled up in Aurion’s royal mess."

"Oh, come on, Joong, where’s your sense of adventure?" Pond teased, scratching behind Phuwin’s ears, much to the cat’s annoyance. "Besides, we’ve dealt with worse, haven’t we?"

"This is... different," Dunk said, his voice thoughtful. "If the prince is cursed, it’s likely powerful magic. Breaking something like this won’t be easy."

"Yeah, well, I’m not exactly in a hurry to stay like this," Phuwin muttered, curling his tail tighter around himself.

Pond straightened up, his mind already working on the next steps. "We’ll need to get out of the city first. The guards will be back, and I don’t plan on sticking around for a second encounter."

Joong nodded. "Good plan. But where are we going to go? We need a place to regroup before we can even think about breaking this curse."

"There’s a sorcerer deep in the mountains of Lyria," Pond said, his voice lowering slightly as if revealing a secret. "It’s said they can break any curse, no matter how powerful. If we can find them, we might have a chance."

Phuwin perked up, his blue eyes gleaming with a mix of hope and skepticism. "A sorcerer? You really think they’ll help?"

Pond shrugged. "Worth a shot. But getting there won’t be easy. The forest is filled with magical creatures, and not all of them are friendly."

"Sounds like a fun trip," Joong said sarcastically.

"Adventure awaits," Pond quipped, flashing him a grin. "Let’s just hope we don’t get eaten by anything on the way."

---

The next morning, after gathering their supplies, the group set out on the road leading toward the mountains. Etherin disappeared behind them, the city’s colorful chaos fading into the distance as they ventured deeper into the wilds.

Phuwin, still perched on Pond’s shoulder in his cat form, seemed unusually quiet as they traveled. Dunk, ever perceptive, noticed the change in demeanor and glanced over.

"Something on your mind?" Dunk asked, his voice low and calm.

Phuwin sighed.

"I was just thinking..." Phuwin began, his voice quieter than usual. "About everything. My kingdom, the curse, how this all started. It feels like I’ve been running forever."

Dunk nodded thoughtfully, adjusting the straps of his pack. "It’s hard to leave everything behind when you don’t have a choice."

Pond, who had been walking just ahead of them, glanced back over his shoulder. "Hey, we’ll figure it out. You’re not alone anymore. We’ve all had to deal with more than our fair share of bad luck, believe me."

Phuwin flicked his tail, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I wasn’t exactly expecting to be rescued by another prince, you know. That’s not something that happens every day."

Joong, who had been mostly silent up to this point, chuckled softly. "Yeah, you’re not the only one surprised by this turn of events. Phum doesn’t usually go around picking up strays."

"First of all," Pond started, rolling his eyes, "Phuwin is not a stray. Second, I’ve got a soft spot for anyone who’s been cursed. It’s kind of my thing."

"Your thing?" Phuwin asked, his voice skeptical. "You help cursed princes all the time?"

"More like cursed artifacts, but close enough," Pond said with a grin. "Breaking curses is a bit of a specialty of mine. Though I’ll admit, I’ve never dealt with a cursed prince-turned-cat before."

Phuwin snorted. "Lucky you. You’re getting the full experience."

"What can I say? I’m a prince of many talents," Pond replied with a wink, clearly enjoying the banter.

As the group continued along the winding path through the forest, the trees around them grew taller and denser. The light filtering through the canopy was dim, casting everything in shades of green and gold. The air was cooler here, the scent of pine and earth filling their lungs as they ventured deeper into the wilderness.

Phuwin, despite his earlier sarcasm, couldn’t help but feel a twinge of hope. Maybe, just maybe, this group of misfits could help him. Pond had confidence about him—an unshakable certainty that somehow, things would work out. And with Joong and Dunk watching their backs, Phuwin felt, for the first time in a long while, that he wasn’t alone.

"So," Phuwin said, breaking the comfortable silence that had settled over them. "What’s your story, Pond? How does a prince of Solara end up undercover as a mage?"

Pond glanced at him, his usual playful expression softening just a bit. "Ah, well, it’s a long story. But let’s just say being a prince isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. My father... he’s a bit of a traditionalist. Always wanted me to follow in his footsteps, rule the kingdom, be the perfect heir."

Phuwin tilted his head, curious. "And you didn’t want that?"

Pond shrugged. "It’s not that I didn’t want to serve my kingdom. I just wanted to do it my own way. There’s more to ruling than sitting on a throne all day, giving orders. So, I started training in magic, learning how to protect the people of Solara in ways that didn’t involve endless politics."

"That’s... unexpected," Phuwin admitted, genuinely impressed. "You’re not like most royals I’ve met."

"I’ll take that as a compliment," Pond said with a smirk. "But enough about me. What’s your deal? What’s the real story behind your curse?"

Phuwin’s expression darkened slightly, and he looked away, his ears flattening against his head. "It’s... complicated."

Pond raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. "Fair enough. When you’re ready to talk, we’re here."

Joong, sensing the shift in mood, cleared his throat. "How much farther to this sorcerer, Phum? We’ve been walking for hours."

"Not far now," Pond replied, checking a small, enchanted map he kept tucked in his belt. "If we keep up the pace, we should reach the edge of the Forest of Lyria by sundown."

"Good," Dunk said, his sharp eyes scanning the path ahead. "Because I don’t trust the look of these woods. Something feels... off."

Phuwin, ever the sarcastic one, flicked his tail. "Great. Magical forests with bad vibes. What could possibly go wrong?"

Pond grinned. "Don’t worry, Peem. I’m sure it’ll be fine. Just think of it as another exciting chapter in our epic adventure."

"If we survive," Phuwin muttered under his breath.

---

By the time the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows over the forest, they reached the outskirts of the Forest of Lyria. The trees here were ancient—massive oaks and twisted pines that stretched toward the sky, their branches thick with moss and vines. The air was heavy with magic, the kind that made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

"Here we are," Pond said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The Forest of Lyria."

Joong eyed the darkened woods warily. "Are we sure this sorcerer actually exists? This place looks like it eats people."

Pond chuckled softly. "Don’t worry, Joong. I’ve heard plenty of stories about the sorcerer of Lyria. They’re real, alright. But they don’t exactly take visitors. We’ll have to be careful."

"Define ‘careful,’" Dunk said, his hand already resting on the hilt of his sword.

"Careful means not getting eaten by the forest," Pond replied with a smirk. "Stick close, and try not to touch anything that glows."

Phuwin glanced at the towering trees, his feline instincts kicking in. "You sure this is a good idea?"

"Relax, Peem," Pond said, patting the cat’s head. "We’ve got this. Besides, it’s not like you have any better options."

Phuwin sighed dramatically. "Fair point."

With that, they ventured into the forest, the shadows closing in around them as the magic of Lyria hummed in the air. Whatever lay ahead, they would face it together.

The forest of Lyria loomed ahead, a sea of ancient trees and twisting vines that seemed to pulse with life. The air felt thicker here, heavy with magic that tingled against Pond’s skin as he led the group through the shadows. Despite his outward calm, Pond’s senses were on high alert. The stories he’d heard about this forest weren’t exactly comforting.

Joong and Dunk flanked him, both of them walking with the practiced ease of seasoned bodyguards, while Phuwin perched on Pond’s shoulder, unusually quiet. The cursed prince’s sharp eyes darted from shadow to shadow, his feline instincts twitching as they ventured deeper into the heart of the forest.

"This place gives me the creeps," Joong muttered, his voice low.

"You’re not alone," Dunk added, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword, eyes scanning the darkened woods.

Pond didn’t respond immediately, his focus locked on the path ahead. The deeper they went, the more the trees seemed to close in around them. The only sound was the soft crunch of leaves beneath their feet and the occasional rustle of the wind through the branches. It was too quiet.

Then, it happened.

The ground beneath Pond’s feet suddenly shifted. The dirt and leaves moved unnaturally, like something was crawling just below the surface. Before he could react, a thick vine shot up from the ground, wrapping itself around his ankle with alarming speed.

"What the—" Pond tried to pull away, but the vine tightened, dragging him down to the forest floor.

"Phum!" Joong shouted, drawing his sword in one swift motion.

But before Joong or Dunk could make a move, more vines erupted from the earth, lashing out like serpents. In an instant, the vines coiled around them, too, pulling them down as the forest came to life around them.

Pond struggled against the vine that was pulling him deeper into the dirt, but it was like fighting a snake made of iron. "Joong! Dunk!" he yelled, twisting to see both his bodyguards wrestling with their own attacks.

Phuwin leaped from Pond’s shoulder, hissing as he tried to claw at the vines. "What is this? The forest’s attacking us?!"

"We’re not alone here!" Dunk shouted, slashing through one of the vines with his sword, but for every vine he cut, two more seemed to take its place.

Just as the situation seemed dire, a strange, ethereal voice echoed through the trees, soft and eerie, like the wind whispering through the leaves. "Intruders in the forest... How foolish you are to wander here uninvited..."

Pond’s heart raced. "Who’s there? Show yourself!"

The vines suddenly tightened their grip, and Pond felt himself being dragged closer to the earth, the cold dirt seeping through his clothes. He clawed at the ground, trying to break free, but it was useless. Whoever—or whatever—controlled this forest was far more powerful than he had anticipated.

"You seek the sorcerer, don’t you?" the voice continued, mocking. "But only those worthy will be allowed to pass. And you... are not worthy."

Phuwin’s eyes widened, his fur bristling as he crouched low, his feline instincts telling him to run, but there was nowhere to go. "Pond, we need to get out of here!"

Pond gritted his teeth, struggling against the vines with all his might. "I don’t care what you think. We’re not leaving until we see the sorcerer!"

For a moment, the forest seemed to laugh, a deep, unsettling sound that echoed through the trees. "Very well. If you wish to prove your worth... then face the forest’s wrath."

Without warning, the ground beneath them split open, revealing a dark, gaping chasm. From within the depths of the earth, something stirred—something massive. The air around them grew colder, and a low, rumbling growl reverberated through the forest floor, shaking the trees.

Joong and Dunk barely managed to get to their feet, both of them gripping their weapons tightly as the earth trembled. "Phum! What do we do?!" Joong called out, his usual calm demeanor shaken.

Pond’s eyes locked onto the dark chasm, his heart pounding in his chest. "We fight."

But before he could say more, a massive shadow rose from the chasm. It was a creature made of vines and twisted roots, its eyes glowing with an unnatural green light. It towered over them, its form shifting and writhing as it let out a bone-chilling roar.

Phuwin’s fur stood on end as he backed away, his heart racing. "Pond..."

Pond’s mind raced as he tried to formulate a plan, but time was running out. The creature lunged toward them, its massive, clawed hands reaching for the group.

"Now would be a great time for some of that famous magic of yours!" Phuwin yelled, his voice a mix of panic and sarcasm.

Pond raised his hand, summoning a surge of energy from deep within. The air around him crackled with magic, and just as the creature’s claws were about to strike, he unleashed a burst of fire, the flames roaring to life and engulfing the creature in a wave of heat.

The creature recoiled, shrieking as the flames licked at its twisted form, but it didn’t back down. It roared in defiance, its eyes glowing brighter as it prepared for another attack.

"It’s not going to stop!" Dunk shouted, his sword at the ready.

Pond gritted his teeth, feeling the strain of the magic pulling at him. "We need to find the sorcerer—this thing is just a distraction!"

"Easier said than done!" Joong retorted, slashing at another vine that shot out from the ground.

Suddenly, the voice from before echoed once again, louder this time. "You will never make it to the sorcerer. You do not belong in this forest..."

The creature lunged again, its claws descending on Pond, Joong, and Dunk all at once.

"Pond, move!" Phuwin shouted, leaping toward him as the creature’s claws came down.

But before anyone could react, the ground beneath them gave way entirely, and they all plummeted into the darkness below, the forest closing in around them.
