-3rd Person-
Yui stands in the dimly lit bathroom, the morning light filtering weakly through the small window. The mirror before her reflects a girl she barely recognizes, her pale skin almost blending into the white walls behind her. Her fingers tremble slightly as they trace the edges of her protective eyewear, the cold metal and glass a constant reminder of the burden she carries.
The bathroom is silent except for the faint sound of her breathing, steady but shallow. The quiet is comforting in its own way, wrapping around her like a protective shield against the chaotic thoughts swirling in her mind. She's been awake for hours, unable to find rest in the tangle of her thoughts. The elders' words still echo in her ears, a haunting melody that refuses to fade. They spoke of safety, of the danger she posed, and of a choice—a choice that felt more like a sentence.
The memory of that conversation is sharp, each word cutting into her like a blade. They had tried to hide their true intentions, masking their fear with soft words and gentle tones. But Yui had seen through it, felt the cold edge of their distrust. They offered her the option to seal her power, to lock away the very thing that made her who she was.
But the cost... the cost was herself. The shrine they mentioned, a place where power could be sealed, was nothing more than a prison. A place where she would be hidden away, forgotten, just another ghost in the village's history.
Yui's reflection stares back at her, eyes dim behind the dark lenses that shield the world from her gaze. She doesn't trust herself, so how can she expect others to? The elders' offer wasn't a choice—it was a warning. A reminder that she is, and always will be, a threat. Her fingers tighten around the edge of the sink, knuckles turning white as she fights the wave of despair threatening to pull her under. She can't let herself drown in it, not now. Today, she has to face the world again. The Academy, her classmates, her fears... all of it awaits her.
But today, she resolves, will be different.
Yui lifts her hand to her cheek, gently slapping it in an attempt to shake off the lingering dread. The cool sting of the slap brings her back to the present, grounding her in the here and now. She watches her reflection closely, searching for any sign of the fear that has gripped her for so long. Her eyes are the same, her face unchanged, but something inside her feels different. There's a new resolve, a small but burning ember of determination that refuses to be snuffed out.
She forces herself to smile, a small, tentative curve of her lips that wavers under the weight of her doubts. It's not much, but it's something. She tries again, this time pushing the smile a little wider, a little brighter. The result is still fragile, but there's a flicker of something behind it—hope, maybe, or the faintest glimmer of courage.
"Good morning, Yui," she whispers to her reflection, the words almost lost in the stillness of the room. Her voice is soft, hesitant, but the sound of it brings a strange sense of comfort. She nods at herself, a small gesture of reassurance, before turning away from the mirror.
The hallway outside the bathroom is silent, the house still wrapped in the early morning calm. She knows Kakashi and Kurenai are awake; she heard them talking in hushed tones earlier, their voices carrying a note of concern she's all too familiar with. They've been worried about her, more so since the incident at the hospital. She's seen it in the way they look at her, the way they speak to her as if she might shatter at any moment.
Today, she will show them that she's okay. Or at least, she'll try.
Yui's steps are quiet as she walks down the hall, each footfall measured and deliberate. The wooden floor creaks softly under her weight, the sound blending with the faint rustle of the trees outside. As she approaches the living room, she can hear the low murmur of Kakashi and Kurenai's voices, their conversation halted by her approach.
Stepping into the room, Yui feels their eyes on her, a mixture of expectation and worry in their gazes. Kakashi sits at the table, his usual calm demeanor masking the concern that lingers in his visible eye. Kurenai stands by the window, her arms crossed lightly over her chest, a gentle smile on her face as she turns to greet Yui.
"Good morning!" Yui's voice comes out a bit too bright, a forced cheerfulness that rings hollow even to her own ears. She hopes they don't notice the slight tremor in her voice, the way her hands are clasped tightly in front of her to keep them from shaking.
Kakashi's reaction is subtle but telling. His visible eye narrows slightly, a flicker of surprise passing through it as he studies her. It's clear he's not entirely convinced by her sudden display of enthusiasm. Kurenai, on the other hand, smiles warmly, though there's a hint of concern in her expression that she tries to hide.
"Good morning, Yui," Kurenai responds, her voice as gentle and encouraging as always. "You seem... different today."
Yui nods, her forced smile wavering but holding. "I'm... I'm trying to be braver. I want to be more... like everyone else." The words feel awkward on her tongue, stilted and unnatural, but she pushes through, determined to maintain the facade.
Kakashi exchanges a glance with Kurenai, the two of them communicating silently, as they often do. His expression is unreadable behind the mask, but there's something in his gaze that makes Yui's heart tighten. "It's okay to take your time, Yui," he says quietly, his tone soft but firm. "You don't have to force yourself."
"I know," Yui whispers, her gaze dropping to the floor. "But... I want to try. I want to be... better."
The room falls into a heavy silence, the weight of Yui's words sinking in. Kakashi rises from his seat, walking over to her with slow, deliberate steps. When he reaches her, he places a hand on her head, a gesture so simple yet so full of meaning. The warmth of his touch seeps into her, a comfort she didn't realize she needed. She looks up at him, her eyes searching his face for reassurance.
"You're already doing better," Kakashi says softly, his voice barely above a whisper. "Just by being here, just by trying. That's enough."
Yui's eyes well up with tears, a surge of emotion she struggles to contain. She blinks rapidly, refusing to let the tears fall. She nods, biting her lip to keep it from trembling. She wants to believe him, wants to hold onto his words like a lifeline, but the doubts still linger, coiled tightly around her heart.
Kurenai moves to stand beside Kakashi, her presence a steadying force. "We're proud of you, Yui," she says, her voice warm and full of compassion. "No matter what happens today, we're here for you."
Yui's heart feels heavy with the weight of their kindness, but there's also a flicker of warmth, a small spark of hope that maybe, just maybe, she can do this. She can be stronger, she can be braver.
"Thank you," Yui murmurs, her voice barely audible. She looks up at both of them, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. "I... I'll do my best."
Kakashi and Kurenai both nod, their expressions softening as they watch her. Yui takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself for the day ahead. She knows it won't be easy—nothing ever is—but with them by her side, she feels like she might just have the strength to face it.
As she prepares to leave, Kakashi hands her a small bento box. "I made lunch for you," he says, his tone light and almost teasing. "Nothing fancy, just something to keep your energy up."
Yui takes the box, her fingers brushing against his as she does. The small gesture is comforting, grounding her in the reality of the moment. The simple act of receiving the bento box feels almost normal, a tiny piece of the life she wants to reclaim. "Thank you," she murmurs, holding the box close to her chest as if it were a precious gift.
"Remember," Kurenai says, her voice gentle but firm, "you're not alone. We're always here for you."
Yui nods, swallowing the lump in her throat. She knows they mean well, that they care about her, but the fear still lingers, the doubt gnawing at the edges of her resolve. But today, she'll push through it. She'll face her fears, one step at a time.
As she steps out of the house, the morning sun filters through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the path ahead. The air is crisp, cool against her skin, and Yui breathes it in deeply, letting it fill her lungs and calm her racing heart.
The world outside seems almost peaceful, a stark contrast to the turmoil that churns within her. She knows Kakashi and Kurenai are watching her, their presence a silent but powerful support. It gives her strength, a reminder that she is not facing this alone.
With each step towards the Academy, Yui feels the weight of the day pressing down on her, but she forces herself to keep moving. She can hear the distant sounds of the village waking up, the chatter of people beginning their day, and it all feels like a distant murmur compared to the pounding of her own heartbeat.
When she finally reaches the gates of the Academy, she pauses for a moment, her hand resting on the cold metal. The familiar sight of the school grounds brings a mix of anxiety and resolve. The path before her is filled with uncertainty, but she's determined to walk it. She takes one last deep breath, feeling the weight of the day ahead settling on her shoulders. But she won't let it break her.
With a final glance back at Kakashi and Kurenai, Yui steps through the gates, her heart pounding in her chest. She knows this is just the beginning of another battle, one she'll have to fight every day. But she's ready, or at least, she's trying to be.
