Chapter 5: Unexpected words; starting with a flying fish.
-Evangeline's POV-
Kick. Punch. Kick. Kick. Duck. Dirt. Control. Attack. Kick. Punch.
I probably seemed like a mad woman, considering my hands and legs were moving fiercely in sync with the violent thoughts that ran through my head.
But no matter how hard I attacked and trained with the tree trunk in front of me, nothing satisfied the turmoil inside myself.
"Arrgh," I yelled angrily. Suddenly the dirt beside me rose and shot upwards, rotating against my palms. I slammed my fist together, towards the trunk.
There was a loud sound of it cracking before the dust disappeared, leaving only a trace of a violent scratch mark on the wooden surface.
I gritted my teeth, about to make more damage to satisfy my thirsty hunger for attacks.
Just then, my bare feet felt vibrations of footsteps on the ground.
"Evan?"
I whirled around, breathing heavily.
Cade stood there cautiously, looking as though he just woke up, with his brown hair disheveled and messy. His bright eyes stood out from the darkness.
"Ev," He murmured sympathetically as he took in my appearance.
Yeah, I probably looked like a crazy murderer at the moment.
My blonde hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, the loose strands sticking to the sides of my face; the sweat being the glue that pulled them together. My eerie gray eyes were brimming with anger and frustration. Let's just say my clothes weren't exactly Victoria Secret style or anything right now. The large, oversized gray T-shirt was so big it reached my elbows, while the black sweat tights that clung to my knees I had on were too tight and worn out. My feet were bare and had slight cuts from the twigs I had been scrunching on. Not like it mattered though. It would heal in a few minutes.
"What're you doing up so early?" I asked him flatly.
"I could say the same for you," Cade responded as he walked towards me.
"Leave, Cade," I muttered, turning around and eyeing the tree again, trying to find more ways to denature it some more, "I don't need your sympathy."
"Who said it was sympathy I wanted to give you?" He asked, rolling his eyes. I scowled.
Before I could object, Cade pulled me into a huge, brotherly hug.
"Let me go, Cade," I whined, trying to leave my voice strong and hard, but it wavered. I struggled in his tight grasps, but finally, I sank into his warm arms.
"I'm such a mess," I grunted.
"Don't say that," He scolded sternly.
"I can't even keep those damn dreams away, Cade!" I snapped. Tears blurred my vision, and I hated that. Tears were always a sign of weakness. It was pathetic.
"That's not something you can control, Evan," Cade consoled as he rubbed his hand on my back.
"I can't take them, those dreams," I whimpered, "Freak. They keep saying I'm a freak."
Cade tightened his hug around my arms, and when he spoke, it came out as a fierce growl.
"You are not a freak, Evangeline. You aren't. Don't believe those bastards in Heaven."
I laughed bitterly, struggling to wipe the tears away. I hated that after 3 years, the betrayal of my own family still stung. I got nightmares each night. About the disgusted look in the Seraph’s eyes; the coldness in my father’s; Dianna’s frightened actions; my mother’s silence; Oriel’s betrayal.
I relaxed slightly with the warmth of Cade’s brotherly arms, wrapped securely around mine. This happened almost every night. Me waking up at the earliest dawn due to those darn dreams; trying to vent out my anger at any poor object that stood my way; and finally Cade appearing and comforting me with his words or hugs. As I said, he was the best brother anybody could ask for.
His hugs meant a lot. I probably would’ve gone crazy, and the poor tree would’ve been deforested by now.
But they never helped stopped the nightmares.
“Well how would you know, Faille?” I snorted as I pulled away from him. I was feeling better now, and playfulness dripped from my tone, “You’ve seen my powers. That certainly isn’t ‘normal’.” I peered up at him.
“Um, gee, Evans,” He shrugged before looking at me sarcastically, “Maybe because you’re talking to a person that shifts into an oversized dog?”
I grinned widely and he pinched my cheeks. We started back towards the campsite.
“My little sis is back, I see?” He smirked.
I rolled my eyes, “Don’t get all smug now, Faille.”
I shivered slightly. It was barely past 6am in the morning, and the weather wasn’t exactly agreeing with my odds at the moment. I closed my eyes and concentrated on the heat that was vibrating off Cade.
“Borrow me some warmth?” I asked innocently.
Cade rolled his eyes, “You could just ask for another hug, you know?”
“Nah,” I said, laughing as I bent his heat into covering my thin skin like a comfy blanket, “Hugs = Not really my thing.”
“When is Andre coming?” I asked curiously as I pulled out my tattered duffel bag. Cade and I never stayed at a place too long, to avoid unwanted encounters with pack wolves, so he always advised me to bring only the essentials. I randomly took out an old, small gray shirt and a loose pair of faded blue ripped jeans.
“Soon,” Cade told me as he went over to his own blue duffel and grabbed out a leather book. I knew right then and there that he was going to revise his plan another few more times, maybe alter it to make it more accurate and better. Typical Cade, “He said a little after 6 when we met up last time, so you should have time to take a quick shower to freshen up.”
“Gotcha,” I told him before I disappeared towards the river.
Once I was there, I took a quick dip into the cooling liquid, the cold feel instantly taking away the tension in my muscles. I felt my hair soak and cling to my back.
I had been thoroughly enjoying myself when I heard the distinct sound of footsteps through the air.
Crap. It wasn’t Cade this time. Cade’s actions were steady, cunning, but this was different, agile, but more rough and the same.
I shot my hand forward, the water following my movements as they pushed towards the shore, grabbed my clothing and sank into the water. I dived inside quickly. I didn’t care that my outfit was now soaking wet. I could evaporate the moist later. I shut my eyes and focused on oxygen bubbles before I took a deep breath in the water. Air bubbles. They always came in handy.
I sat on the ground in the water, waiting patiently. I pricked my ears up to listen if the intruder was still there.
“Ah, Andre,” Oh, Cade was there now, “You’re here.”
“Cade! Hello there. My buddies are on their way. We start the attack at 7, yes?”
“Yes. Remember though, no killing. We attack just to toy with the Celestials heads, no deaths are intended.”
“Indeed,” The Andre guy said.
“May I ask, where is the little companion of yours that you mentioned would be tagging along?”
“She’s..”
Oh so now you realize that your little friend is literally a few inches away, annoyed at being soaked underneath a blanket of cold water, completely nude? It’s a good thing I can breathe under water buddy, or else I’d be dead! Stupid.
I kicked my leg onto the river floor, catching a glimpse of a random fish that swam by.
I’m sorry, I thought to him guiltily before I pushed my foot upwards, forcing the strong current, and the poor fish, to shoot upwards into the surface.
“Oh cool, they have flying fish here?” Andre asked, amazement in his voice.
“Err, yeah, flying fish. Totally natural,” Cade agreed, a little weary as realization echoed in his voice. I snorted underwater. That would show him to get his stupid butt away from the river so I could emerge and get into my goddamned clothes!
“Evangeline is getting ready back at the site,” Cade lied smoothly, “Come, I’ll lead the way.”
The poor fish had swam away, probably inwardly screaming, ‘MERMAID!’
I rolled my eyes when I heard footsteps retreat. This Andre dude seemed amusing. Yeah, sure he didn’t know that I was a Fallen and I had abilities, but seriously? Flying Fish?
When I was sure they were no longer there, I emerged from the water and quickly evaporated the molecules that soaked my clothes and body. In 5 seconds, I was in my short top and ripped jeans that hung lowly at my waist.
I dried my hair and made my way back towards the campsite.
There were about 15 rogues by the time when I emerged from the bushes. All of them turned to stare at me with distrust in my eyes.
“Is this the companion you were talking about?” One of them asked, doubt clear in his tone. I looked at him, a hard expression settling on my face. He was quick to glance back away.
“Evangeline is with me,” Cade announced sternly, stepping towards me until he towered over beside me, “She left her pack and now she’s a strong rogue. Do not underestimate her.”
Authority and power radiated from his voice, causing me to fill a sense of pride.
And I suppose his words weren’t a completely lie. I ‘left’ Heaven, and now I was a Fallen, basically Rogue in Heaven’s language. And yes, I was bragging, but if you touched or annoyed one hair on me, I wouldn’t hesitate to create an earthquake to shallow you up.
Sadly, they didn’t know about my abilities. So I had to keep a low profile and only use my powers discreetly.
It was that necessary though. Cade had thought me how to fight with bare hands. “Fighting in our human forms is as important as using combat through our wolves.” Were exactly his words.
“She doesn’t smell entirely like a wolf,” The same guy objected, taking a whiff of me.
I gritted my teeth, “Look here, buddy, if you’ve got something to say, say it.”
True, my scent wasn’t entirely human; it was a mix of something else. Yet after spending 3 years with Cade, the wolf smell had rub on me. So I seriously wished this guy would just shut up. What was with his 20 questions?
“Don’t talk to me that way, blonde,” The rogue growled, “All because you’re a girl doesn’t mean I won’t teach you a good lesson.”
I smirked, “Bet you that you’re all talk and no actions, pup.”
Apparently that was what wolves used to offend each other, according to Cade.
“I’m warning you,” The rogue snarled.
I felt Cade nudge my side and I looked up at him. He was frowning at me, and I was sure that if we could mind-linked, like how pack wolves could do, he’d be yelling, ‘What the hell are you doing?”
I rolled my eyes and gave him a one-sided smirk that said, ‘You know how I fight, Faille. Don’t look down on me.”
“Come on, boy,” I grinned at the rogue in front of me, talking like he was a dog. He needed to learn some respect, “Let’s play fetch!”
The rogue in front of me let out a strangled yelp before it ripped out of its skin and shifted into a large, brown wolf.
I smirked. This was going to be fun.
The wolf was growling at me fiercely, but I stared at its familiar eyes and focused on what it was about to do next.
It leaped, and from that single action, the wind told me he was going to lung for my throat. I rolled my eyes briefly, typical wolf movements.
It extracted its claws and brought it forward, towards my face, but I swiftly bent down, letting it jump right over me. It lost its balance, stumbling on the ground slightly.
I supposed I could’ve created a hole on the ground and sink him in easily, but there was a crowd of rogues being our audience.
Instead, I ran towards it and leaped gracefully while it was still on the ground. My bare feet lost its contact from the dirt as I jumped backwards and landed on the wolves back.
He growled, wanting me off it. But I just grinned, hand-standing on his mane. The turn of pressure caused him to buckle down onto the floor again, and I jumped one more time, making its face smack into the ground before I hopped down from his back and strolled straight back towards Cade, who was rolling his eyes and chuckling quietly.
The rogues were all staring at me with their eyes wide opened. I smiled and waved at them innocently.
The wolf growled lowly before he stood and shifted back into a man. Cade covered my eyes with his palm as somebody threw the dude a pair of shorts.
When I regained my sight, the rogue was now standing in front of me with his arms folded across his bare chest.
“You can fight,” He said grudgingly, “So why did you leave your pack?”
Oh. That I can respond to with bitter truthfulness.
“I didn’t leave, I was kicked out,” I shrugged as they stared at me in shock.
“Why?” One rogue asked.
“I wasn’t trusted after I made a mistake,” I told them vaguely.
“What pack was it?” The rogue from before asked. I figured he was around his mid 20s. He didn’t look too old to be honest, with jet black hair and seemingly-endless angry brown eyes that were the color of his wolf.
To his question, I looked at Cade.
“Sunlit Branch pack,” He lied smoothly.
“That’s right,” I agreed. It was ironic. I was an ‘angel’ yet my lying skills were as smooth as silk. Must’ve got it from Cade, “Don’t go on asking about what pack it is. It’s a pack in Australia that got demolished back rogues 2 years ago, in case your wolf history is a little rusty.”
“Why were you even in Australia?” The same rogue asked in disbelief. I shot him a look that said, ‘dude, stop asking questions.’
“My father was Australian. He came to the US for some business trip and met my mother, who was his mate. She moved to Australia and joined the Branch pack, where she had my brother, sister and I. I was 14 when I accidentally hurt another pack member, that’s why they kicked me out in the first place. After that I left and went back to America. The rogues attacked Sunlit Branch a year after I left.”
Cade was looking at me oddly, while I held a calm mask. Lying was fun. Especially if you were good at it.
“They kicked you out all because you hurt another pack member?” One rogue asked incredulously.
“Yeah,” I said, rolling my eyes, “What did you do to become rogue?”
“I tried to kill my Alpha,” He shrugged nonchalantly.
I stared at him, trying to keep my face composed.
“Okay, cool,” Was all I said with a laugh.
“Alright, alright,” Cade interrupted. The topic of why a rogue was a rogue had always been a little sensitive for him, “We’re already 15 minutes behind schedule. Does everybody already know their role in the plan?”
The rogues all nodded. I couldn’t help but noticed how they looked like gangsters.
“Let’s go. It’s a 20 minute run to the Celestial pack by wolf form. Listen up, their Alpha is smart and cunning. Alpha Lancaster probably knows we are going to attack, so we need to be at our sharpest, got that?”
Another chorus of yeses and nods.
“Let’s go.”
And with that, there was an echo of ripping noises and I found myself staring at a group of huge wolves, growling with determination.
The only 2 that had no shifted were Andre and Cade. Andre nodded once and the wolves took off, vanishing into the woods.
“So you’re the lovely Evangeline?” Andre asked, smiling as he turned to me.
I watched his movements with distrust, but found that I was looking at an older version of Cade. No, they looked nothing alike, while Andre was probably in his mid 40s, with slightly gray and black hair, but that expression he wore. Calm, stern and cool, but inside he had been through a lot. Exactly like Cade.
“Yes,” I smiled at him, “And you must be Andre?”
“Indeed I am,” Andre laughed. A fatherly, low laugh. I couldn’t help but wonder why a kind-hearted looking man like him had turned out to be a rogue.
“It’s a pleasure going to work with you and the famous Cade Faille,” He smiled, and I realized his body was now vibrating, indicating he was going to go wolf soon, “Aren’t you going to shift?”
“Yeah,” I nodded, “Just want to say a few words to Cade first.”
“I see,” He nodded again before he shifted into a large gray wolf and ran off.
“So you know what to do?” Cade asked, stretching.
“Yeah,” I arched my back. Since, obviously, I couldn’t shift into a wolf, I’d fly. Cade had made me promise that I’d fly as high as possible, and make sure I was hidden in the clothes. He told me that the Celestial’s had a green and golden flag placed high on a large tree that stated that this was their territory. I’d have to close back my wings and go back into the forest, causing a slightly shake in the air as I stepped out of the trees as though I had just shifted back into my human form.
It was a smart plan. Cade was seriously a genius.
“Be careful,” Cade told me seriously. His muscular figure had started trembling slightly, and I knew he was going to shift.
“I know, you too,” I told him before I let my wings fully extend out. It felt as good as getting up in a cramp morning and stretching your arms; legs and body do your heart’s content. Despite being thrown out of Heaven, I was still proud of my wings. They had always been larger than some of the Cherubs, but after straightening my powers they had grown a lot bigger and vibrant, like a swan’s, with beautiful white feathers that shimmered with elegant streaks of silver.
I turned to find Cade still shivering and staring at me with awe.
“You know, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that,” He grunted before his back bone snapped, and in his place stood a majestic brown wolf.
He gave me a soft whine before he shot off into the distance.
I stared after him until his furry figure had disappeared before I readied my wings and rose into the sky.
“Celestial Scars,” I muttered to myself, “Get ready.”
And with that, I increased my speed and shot into the clouds.
-Curtis’s POV-
“Be careful,” Megan whispered as I wrapped her in a tight hug.
“You make it sound like I’m never coming back,” I teased her, pulling her small figure towards my chest.
She slapped it playfully, “Don’t jinx it.”
I rolled my eyes and placed a kiss on her cheek.
“You, stay with the others, alright? I don’t want you out there with any of the rogues,” I warned her.
She nodded, “Yeah, and don’t play hero if the chances are too slim.”
I smiled at her as she looked up at me through her eyelashes. My mate was absolutely gorgeous if you asked me. She took after her sister, with glorious blond hair and baby blue eyes. We shared on last kiss before there was a polite knock on the door.
“Curtis?” I could sense the authority in his voice, instantly knowing who it was.
“Alpha, come in,” I said.
Everett’s face appeared in the room. He took in how my arms were wrapped around Meg’s and winced awkwardly.
“I didn’t interrupt anything, did I?” He asked.
Megan laughed at her older cousin, “Don’t worry, Ever, we weren’t doing anything.”
The stern looking Alpha nodded and turned to me.
“The rogues will be arriving soon; we should get into our positions.”
“Alright,” I scooped my mate up into another quick kiss before placing her back down, “Stay safe.”
She nodded, smiling slightly before she stalked towards Everett.
“You,” She poked him squarely on the chest, “Keep yourself and my mate safe.”
She pulled him into a friendly hug that he quickly returned, “Yeah.”
Normally, a low growl would’ve rumbled from my chest at the sight of my mate hugging another man. But this was my Alpha; and my best friend. Plus they were cousins. You get what I mean.
“Beta,” Everett turned to me and nodded curtly.
I followed him towards the border, where most of our members had already shifted into their wolves and were crouched down into defense.
“Are you going to shift?” I asked, turning to Everett who had been ordering some pack members.
“No,” He said, picking up a clipboard and flipping through it briefly, “If I’m going to get Faille I’d rather to it with my bare hands.”
I nodded slowly before I felt Goosebumps form on my skin and I tore into my dark brown wolf.
I had been paying attention to the border forest when suddenly, I felt Everett stiffen beside me.
“Alpha?” I asked him through our mind-link, “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t reply me, but I could tell he was sniffing the air.
“Do you smell that?” He asked, starting to look weary.
I took a deep breath through my snout but nothing came through. This was weird. Sure, the Alpha had enhanced senses in his human form, but by right I was in my wolf form, which meant my smell would be more animal and accurate.
So why could Everett smell something that I couldn’t?
“I don’t smell anything, Alpha,” I thought back to him, “Are you sure you’re okay?”
I could feel the anxiousness and confusion through his head.
“There’s definitely a smell,” Everett insisted, starting to whimper lowly, “It’s really sweet; like vanilla and sunshine..”
This time I looked up at him, frowning, could wolves even frown?
“Alpha,” I thought, suddenly worried. This wasn’t good. Maybe he was starting to get the after effects of stressing about the attack. And if he were so distracted what would happen if a rogue attacked him?
That seemed to snap him out of it.
“It’s nothing, Curtis,” Everett ordered, pinching the bridge of his nose and shaking his head. When he refocused his gaze, I could tell that determination was settled back inside.
“Focus on the rogues.”
I gazed at him in concern for another few seconds before I nodded my large head and rerouted down my knees and gazed thoroughly at the darkness of the trees.
We waited for 20 minutes like absolute idiots.
Nobody came.
Everett was getting more angry and frustrated by each minute that passed. I could tell that the wolves were starting to worry for their Alpha, and were getting tired of staring blankly at a bunch of trees.
“Alpha,” I told him, “Maybe the rumors are fake after all? There is no attack?”
“Impossible,” He growled, “The smell is getting stronger!”
I turned to him. He was still onto the entire smell thing?
Just then, a piercing howl erupted from the other side of the pack borders.
“F*ck,” Everett swore angrily before he started shaking.
“Beta, stay here and make sure nobody passes the boarders. You’re in charge of this side,” He sank his Alpha tone deep into his order.
I watched as he ripped into a majestic, large midnight black wolf and traced off.
I turned to look at the guard wolves.
“Well? What are you looking at?” I snarled, “Focus on the woods!”
-Evangeline’s POV-
A piercing howl caused me to stop straight in my tracks and turn in shock.
Cade’s wolf let out a sort of growl of profanities, probably a string of swears words, as he skidded to a brake and turned to me.
Crap. Stupid guard wolf! Sure, it was smart for Cade to pick the side entrance to enter the pack boundaries, what we didn’t expect is for the guard wolf there to start attacking for no reason. He had bit one of the rogues, who returned the favor.
The other guard wolves had started lunging for the rogues and boom. They were now in a pretty much animal fight.
Cade snarled in annoyance. He turned to the gray wolf beside him, Andre, giving him a signal. Andre nodded and lunged into the fight, probably to stop it from getting any more serious before somebody got too injured.
Cade turned to me and growled. Well excuse me for not speaking wolf!
He looked exasperate for a second before he turned into his human form.
“Evangeline!” He snapped, “Get up into a tree and hide. Things aren’t going as the way we planned."
My eyes widened, “But-”
“GO!” He barked before he tore into his brown wolf again. There was a growl that sounded from behind us. In seconds, Cade turned, crashed and kicked the pack wolf that had wanted to attack us and bit at its neck.
I bit my lip, wanting to help out so badly. But Cade gave me a warning snarl as the other wolf tried snapping at him again.
I nodded curtly and ran towards the nearest tree I could find. I looked around; making sure nobody saw me before I used the air to lift my figure onto the top. I gripped the branch, eyeing the entire scene.
From where I stood, perched like a cat, I realized that the rogues and pack wolves were equally matched. Although the rogues fought more violently, at least they were trying their hardest not to kill any of the pack wolves, which had more organized and synced skills.
My eyes widened when one of the pack wolves tried biting into a rogue’s neck. Instinctively, my hand shot forward and jerked, moving the ground discreetly.
Most of the wolves lost their balance, tumbling slightly like dizzy dogs, but at least the rogue wouldn’t be killed.
Cade and Andre were now in the middle of the fight, working together as they tried to separate the fighting wolves from each other.
All of a sudden, my nose tingled.
What was that heavenly scent?
It was a little woody; like the forest, and starched with pine. But also intoxicating with the mixture of man’s cologne..
I looked up from where I was on the tree, looking around anxiously.
Why..
A loud, killer growl sounded from behind me. I turned and looked down, and my breath hitched as my gaze landed on the most beautiful creature I had ever seen in my life.
A gorgeous, black wolf highlighted with midnight blue was dashing towards the scene, releasing dominating growls that echoed through the surfaces of the fight.
Each snarl was murderous, yet why did it send shivers of pleasure up and down my spine?
I had been so distracted by the stunning animal that I didn’t realize that he was charging straight into the fight.
Towards the middle of it.
Where Cade was.
My eyes widened in shock and panic. No.
The next things happened in such seconds, I wasn’t really aware of what was going on.
One minute I was part of the audience, sat perched on the tree as a beautiful wolf charged towards my brother, probably wanting to kill it.
The next thing I knew, there was silence.
I was no longer on the safety of the tree; instead, I was standing in between the 2 huge wolves, the midnight blue one in front of me, Cade behind.
The Alpha wolf was looking stunned.
I winced, expecting him to bite out a chunk of my flesh away from my neck. After all, there was an audience. I couldn’t defend myself with my powers. And although I could take down wolves, this one was huge. I was pretty sure he’d snap me like a twig.
But he didn’t.
The low growls that came from Cade seemed to snap the wolf out of its trance as it snarled.
“Evangeline, get out of here! It’s dangerous,” Cade hissed to me as he gripped my arm protectively. I almost snorted. Dude, if I hadn’t jumped down from the tree, you would’ve been wolf meat by now.
But before I could sum up a coherent response, I was yanked away from Cade as someone else’s hand wrapped around mine. My back hit into a firm, hard and bare chest.
Um, why were tingles flooding up and down my spine at the mere contact?
Cade had started growling furiously, but I was too distracted to calm him down.
This man wouldn’t hurt me. I was pretty sure about that. But I didn’t know why.
Slowly, I arched my neck to look up at the person that was holding me.
My gray eyes locked with a gorgeous, magnificent pair of bluish, greenish irises, streaked with a beautiful golden. Dark hair that was ruffled matched them perfectly; with a square jaw and thin, warm lips.
Thin warm lips that parted with lust as it spoke the words that made the wolves, rogues and pack alike, gasps.
Words that made Cade swear out 3 singles, “No. Oh god, no, no, no.”
Words that made my heart pound with dread; shock; confusion; excitement; disbelief.
“Don’t you dare touch my mate.”
