Monty's Diner was usually empty at 3 o' clock in the morning, the workers would just spend their time gossiping and playing silly games.
However, on that random night, there were three people sat around a table in the middle of the diner.
Felix Lachlan and Mariah Lachlan were two of the people at the table. Across from them sat a beautiful older woman with blonde hair and eyes similar to Felix's. She was staring at them silently, an awkward smile on her face.
"Thank you." The woman smiled as a waitress placed a cup of coffee in front of her. The waitress nodded before walking off. The woman cleared her throat as she turned to the two children in front of her. "Are you both sure you don't want anything?"
Felix and Mar both silently stared at her. Mar's arms were crossed as she leaned back in the chair and Felix had his fingers interlocked and resting on the table while he leaned forward.
"All we want to know from you.." Mar spoke up finally, with a deep inhale and exhale. "Is why you're here, Martha."
"For Felix." Martha said as if it was the most obvious answer. Mar and Felix exchanged a look. "I'm moving back to New York with my parents and I want you to come with me, Felix."
"No." Felix immediately answered, shaking his head. Mar's lips parted as she looked to Felix before looking back to Martha who also wore a shocked look on her face.
"Felix, I am your mother." Martha said with a disapproving look. "Michael is dead, so you need to come back with-"
"He's not dead." Felix cut her off, venom laced in his tone. "And some mother you are. After dad cheated on you, you left. You didn't message me or return my calls, nothing!"
"You left first, Felix." Martha frowned deeply at her son. "Was I not just doing what you had done to me?"
"You were threatening to ship me off to military school!" Felix yelled in annoyance. "So yeah, I did run away. But you left. You left and now you're trying to take me away from the life I've built here."
"What life exactly have you built here?" Martha asked as she glanced to Mar disapprovingly. It was no secret that Martha didn't like Mar.
"I have people who love me here." Felix said immediately. "I have someone who treats me better than my father, someone who treats me better than my mother. I have friends and family here."
Martha was silent for a moment. She stared at Felix and Mar with a slight frown. She sighed as she hung her head.
"I know all about the karate endeavors." Martha had said with a shake of her head. "You've been hurt so many times, Felix."
"And that's all apart of life!" Felix argued back to her. "Yeah, I've been hurt physically and mentally but it's shaped me into who I am, and I am in too deep to back out now. I am not a quitter."
Martha sighed as she picked up her coffee and took a sip before placing it back down. Mar unfolded her arms.
"Martha, Felix and I are doing fine." Mar offered with a small smile. "My real dad's taking us in so we don't have to worry about rent or water or anything."
"Real dad?" Martha questioned her with a raised brow. Mar bit her bottom lip before sighing with a nod.
"Yeah, Michael's not my real dad." Mar murmured out to her. "My mom cheated on him with her high school sweetheart."
"There's no surprise there." Martha couldn't help but to scoff bitterly. "I had a feeling you weren't Michael's child. Like first husband, like first wife."
"Do not talk about my mother." Mar immediately seethed with an angry expression. "My mother was going through a lot. Leave her alone."
Martha held up her hands in mock-surrender. "I'm just saying history has a tendency to repeat itself. Same thing happened to her parents and then her and now in the future to you."
"Mom." Felix immediately frowned deeply at the woman with a disappointed look. He didn't like the way she was talking about Mar.
"You're such a bitch, Martha." Mar scoffed, folding her arms across her chest and looking off to the side.
"I'm a bitch?" Martha laughed at her with a shake of her head. "Says the pothead and alcoholic. You will amount to nothing in life."
"I'm not a pothead or an alcoholic anymore, so get your facts right." Mar immediately pointed a finger at her. "Some people can actually change. You wouldn't know because you're still the self-centered asshole that I visited all those years. Never once did you treat me with care, never once did you actually pretend to like me. You were and still are a fucking cunt."
Martha clenched her jaw. Felix's jaw hung in shock. He didn't know what to say. Mar was right but Martha was his mother so he decided to keep his mouth closed.
"You are just like your mother." Martha scoffed, shaking her head. "Always pointing fingers and shitting on everyone."
"Well because you knew about her!" Mar suddenly exploded in anger. "You knew Michael was with my mother when you got with him but you didn't care!"
Martha's eyes widened as did Mar's. She placed a hand over her mouth, not daring to look at Felix. Martha did. She looked to Felix with parted lips.
"Wait, mom, you knew?" Felix asked with a frown as he looked to the woman. "You knew dad and Lilith were together?"
"I-" Martha sighed as she looked down to the table wordlessly. She didn't dare to say anything else.
"And you knew that she knew, Mar?" Felix looked to the girl with a look of betrayal. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want your view on your mother to change." Mar sighed out to the boy. "And I promised her I wouldn't tell anyone."
"You kept a promise to a woman who treated you like shit?" Felix raised a brow at her, folding his arms across his chest. "Why?"
Mar sighed as she tucked her hair behind her ears. "I never wanted her to hate me. She's your mother, after all. I wanted to get along with her so we could all have fun whenever I visited in Florida. So when I accidentally heard her admit it to my mother, and she begged me to keep it a secret for you, I guess apart of me thought that if I did.. she wouldn't hate me as much as she did."
"I don't hate you, Mariah." Martha had sighed out, causing Felix and Mar to look at her. "It's complicated, so intensely complicated. Michael left me for your mother, and when he found out that she was seeing Orion behind his back.. he came running to me. A year later I moved to Florida because I was pregnant and my parents had kicked me out. Then I told Michael and he made as much efforts as possible to get to us. Then, Lilith eventually found out and insisted that you get to know Felix, Mar. I hated that idea. I hated the idea of you bonding with my son because you remind me so much of your mother. Michael was my first love, he was the first man I ever loved and Lilith had just taken him away from me so easily. I guess I just formed a strong resentment in my heart towards you and I know it wasn't fair."
Felix and Mar were both silent. They soaked in Lilith's explanation. They had both finally understood the complete family lore, thanks to Martha.
"You're right, Mar." Martha sighed out tiredly. "I am a self-centered bitch, I am so horrible to you both. There are no excuses but I see now how unfair I've been. I was blinded by so much hatred and anger I forgot to realize that you both aren't your mother and father. You're both your own persons, you're both beautiful and kind and I'm sorry. I'm truly sorry to you both. Mar, you didn't deserve any of the horrible treatment I gave to you and Felix you didn't deserve to have such a shitty person as your mother."
Mar's lips parted as Martha began to cry. Felix immediately got up and walked towards his mother, enveloping her in a hug.
Martha hugged him and cried. Mar hesitated. She didn't know if she should stand up and hug her too or let the mother and her son have their moment.
Martha opened her eyes and waved Mar over. Mar smiled the smallest of smiles before she got up and hugged Martha as well.
"I'm so sorry." Martha cried as she caressed the two teens' head. "Thank you for talking to me and helping me to realize how stubborn and stupid I've been. I know it's a bit too late but I do hope you two forgive me, I'm so sorry."
Felix looked to Mar. The girl smiled with a nod, causing Felix to smile as well- hugging his mother more tightly.
"We forgive you, mom." Felix whispered out slightly, Mar nodding. "Everyone's human, we understand how much you've been through."
"I'm not going to lie, I spent all those days hurt when you refused to even acknowledge me." Mar spoke up. "But I realize now that your feelings were just taking over your senses. It's a normal human thing, I know how it's like. I forgive you because I understand."
Martha started crying a little louder as she hugged the two even more tighter. "How are you both so much mature than any adult I've met?"
Mar laughed as she pulled away, wiping her nose as she had began to tear up slightly. "We've been through a lot."
Felix smiled as he pulled away as well. "Yeah, she's right. We've been through hell, but at least we're both still standing here together."
Felix and Mar smiled at each other warmly. Martha smiled as well. She sighed as she wiped her eyes.
"This is not what I expected would happen when I booked the flight." Martha laughed as Mar and Felix went back to their seats.
"Yeah well that's life in the Valley." Mar laughed with a nod. "Nothing goes the way you want it to go, there's always some sort of shit in the way."
"Are you thinking about Robby when you say that?" Felix couldn't help but to ask with a sly smile.
Mar scoffed in annoyance, shoving Felix playfully. Felix laughed as he fixed himself back up straight.
"Who's Robby?" Martha asked curiously as she tilted her head, a small smile on her face as she stared at Mar.
"He's my boyfriend." Mar said with a childish smile. "We've had a lot of obstacles in our relationship but I love him to death."
"Oo, tell me more!" Martha said excitedly with a smile. Mar looked to Felix who was also smiling, the girl laughing with a nod.
"We met at a party a few years ago and we kept meeting each other, it was like the universe wanted us to be together." Mar smiled warmly. "He's really nice to me. So nice, but he has his moments. Whenever something's bothering him, he just shuts off and refuses to tell me. It makes me feel a type of way sometimes but I know he just doesn't know how to talk to people. He had a difficult childhood growing up. Although his dad's in his life now, he wasn't always."
"All you can do is just talk to him and tell him that a relationship isn't stable without proper communication." Martha hummed with a nod. "And if he loves you, then he'll realize that him shutting down is affecting you too."
"He does love her." Felix spoke up with a nod. "Robby's the man, mom. He's like perfect! I love him."
"Is he your boyfriend or Mar's?" Martha asked with a questioning look and an amused smile. Mar laughed at that, Felix scrunching his face.
"They had a bit of a... bonding experience." Mar said as she looked to Felix, both of them silently agreeing to keep their Santa Monica trip a secret from Martha. "They're really close, have been since Felix first joined karate."
"Oh yes, how is karate?" Martha asked them curiously. "I've seen you both having the time of your lives on your social medias."
"Uh, yes." Felix laughed slightly with a nod. "Except for the constant battling, which is now over thankfully."
"I see, I see." Martha nodded before she looked to Felix hesitantly. "So.. Felix.. any girls in your life I should hear about?"
Felix laughed as he and Mar exchanged a look. Felix sighed out. "To be honest, it's really really complicated."
"I understand that, trust me." Martha couldn't help but to laugh. Mar smiled before her phone dinged. She checked the message, her smile falling.
"Shoot." Mar murmured out as she stood up and glanced to Felix. "We were supposed to be home at twelve for the latest. I have a million missed calls and messages from Orion."
"Shit, so do I." Felix murmured out as he checked his phone as well. Martha stared at them with a small smile.
"So you guys are living by Orion now?" Martha couldn't help but to ask as she stood up with Mar and Felix, opening her wallet.
"Yeah, he asked us to." Mar said with a nod as Martha pulled put a fifty dollar bill and placed it on the table. She jumped her brows as she and Felix exchanged a look. "We just have some clothes over at his house though, the movers are coming tomorrow."
"I see, I see." Martha nodded at them as she began to walk away from the table, the two teens following closely behind her. "Think he'd mind if I stayed over until my flight?"
"Not at all." Mar hummed as the three exited the restaurant. Martha shot her a small smile before wrapping an arm around Mar and Felix.
