PROMPT: Write a story with the words "I wish..."

CW(s): Mentions of blood and injury, implied violence, allusions to Christian mythology.

At the edge of Heaven, you were brought to your knees, forced to bow before the Authority and the whole Choir of Angels.

You have to know

that I never wanted you to bow before me,

because you never asked me to bow before you.

Even when surrounded by beings of pure starlight and burning fire, you chose to remain in your material form.

Blood, red and thick, dripped from your eyelashes and lips, and your wings lay broken at your feet.

You looked terrifyingly human without them.

Why would you take their form?

I don't understand.

I don't understand you.

I thought I did...

Because She asks us to be merciful, we granted you one last word. A chance to repent, to be humble and ask for Her forgiveness, to speak directly to Her.

But you didn't take it.

Even if you did,

I don't think She would've listened.

You are no longer Hers.

For a while, you said nothing. The Powers that held you down were just about ready to push you over the edge, when you finally raised your head.

You turned to me.

Of all angels there, you turned to me, a lowly Virtue. And you smiled.

You smiled like I was the only one there. The only one that mattered.

You can't do this to me.

It's not fair!

I could feel the many eyes of the Authority on me. My light flickered and my celestial form wavered, but I remained kneeled, in silent prayer, my gaze stone cold and my thoughts held tight between clasped hands.

Your eyes and smile still held me hostage, when you opened your red mouth and said,

"I wish I had done it sooner."

And just like that, you were gone. Pushed over the edge, with no wings to break your eternal fall.

There was a wail, a piercing, bottomless sound that shook the heavens.

An infinity of hands reached out for me.

But it was too late.

I had already jumped after you.

I wish you'd never spoken to me

and called me yours

I wish you hadn't been kind

and made me crave your smiles

I wish you hadn't defied Her

and made me understand why

I wish you'd never sinned

and made me sin with you

I wish you'd never started this war

expecting me to finish it

I wish you'd repented

so I didn't have to watch you fall

I wish we'd never met

But more than anything

I wish I could be with you

forever
