although thalia tried to play it off to her friends that she was cool with everything that went down with trent, she wasn't. she couldn't be. not when she realised she'd caught feelings for him already. she knew it was dangerous for her to catch feelings for him so quickly. especially considering they hadn't known each other for more than a week and a half. it terrified her that she had known him for such a short amount of time and yet he had her hooked despite his earlier words. it terrified her that her dream of falling in love at first sight was proved to be much worse than she ever thought. she didn't realise the level of heartbreak that came with it would be so painful. so to minimise that pain, she decided she wouldn't interact with him, even though it pained her to do so. she didn't want to give trent another chance to hurt her.
trent was in a much worse state of mind. he kept replaying his conversation with thalia in his head, revising what he said and how she responded. the one image he couldn't get out of his face was the face thalia made when she was hurt by him wanting to remain civil. it haunted him. it hurt that she looked so hurt and he couldn't comfort her but it killed him that he was the reason she was hurt. that he had said that to her and caused that response. he knew he shouldn't have spoken to her that way and yet he did. he ruined any chance of becoming anything with her because of his avoidant personality.
the true reason why trent acted the way he did was because he was scared. he was scared that he already started to like thalia only days after meeting her. he was scared that she was all he could think about. he was scared that she had such a hold on him and how he felt from day to day. and he was scared of letting her in. trent is a notoriously shy person so someone as bubbly and as friendly as thalia confused him. she brought him out of his comfort zone and made him feel a lot more comfortable than people he'd known his whole life. it didn't even take long for him to warm up to her which was abnormal and therefore, to trent, scary and suspicious. so he did the only thing he could think of: push her away.
trent often had a problem being vulnerable with people. he struggled being vulnerable with his own parents, bothers, sister, friends and exes. being so vulnerable with thalia terrified him. he was scared of letting her in and giving her the possibility of breaking his heart. so he distanced himself. trent was known for taking a while to warm up to new people and yet with thalia it was like they knew each other for years and that was terrifying. what better choice than to self sabotage before anything was to happen to protect your feelings, right?
wrong. it left him sitting in a pool of his own guilt and regret, feeling stupid for rejecting someone he was obviously interested in. for hurting thalia by telling her she was delusional for thinking he fancied her when he obviously did. but there was nothing to do. he had made his bed and now he had to lie i all its uncomfort.
