Past the cold iron mesh, a girl waits
Sat on concrete steps in a sunhat and braids
Humming a bright, strange tune.
She's waited long enough.
Pluck your picture book off the shelf
Take the melted unmelted chocolates to share
Clutch them in your puny arms
And emerge outdoors to a bare foot June.

At familiar creatures- she points like on a map
Like you'll both go to see the pretty giraffes,
The ocean of sunflowers, the star-shower fireworks,
Conniving dolphins and sweet sleepy cows,
Ponds roiling with trout, butterflies
More colors than the rainbow, pink berries,
Boats and hayrides to the end of time.
