The Mirror of Erised {One Shot for xxTheDreamerxx}

“Derek! Give me back my Arithmancy book! You’re going to make me late to class.” Kayla Dreamer yelled at her best friend, her glasses sliding slightly down her nose as she tried to reach up for her book in her best friend’s hand. Kayla’s Ravenclaw robe and coal like hair blowing in the wind as she stood in the middle of the courtyard outside Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students stared at the two as they walked by hurrying towards there class.

“Not in your dreams, Dreamer.” Derek replied with a sly smile. He was what people thought as the cool guy, the guy everyone admired, the guy every girl dreamed about. Derek Night; tall, handsome, mysterious, sly and most of all cocky and slightly rude, though he has a soft spot for a certain nerd in Ravenclaw. You guessed it, the dark haired beauty that stood almost a head shorter than him, trying to reach for her Arithmancy book. Derek grinned down at his best friend for ten years now, he’s known Kayla through their fathers, but a few years earlier Kayla’s father died and he felt it was his duty to watch after her. Though that didn’t mean he never teased her, because that was his personal duty, to tease her and torture her at times. “Come on you can reach, just a little further.” Derek taunted his best friend as he held the book up above his head where he knew Kayla would never be able to reach.

Kayla Dreamer glared up at her friend through her black square rimmed glasses, her deep forest green eyes shining vividly. If only looks could kill. “Derek Tiberius Night!” Kayla yelled loud enough for the passing by students to hear as she noticed the slight tint in her father’s cheeks. She knew he hated his middle name, one of the main reasons she used it to her advantages, “You give me my book right now before I use force.” She seethed through her gritted teeth, she may be the sky, overlooked nerd in Hogwarts, but when she was never like that with her best friend Derek, especially when he did stuff like this.

“Okay, listen up Dreamer. I’ll make you a deal, you do my Potions essay and I’ll gladly just hand you this here book.” Mr. Night said with a sly smirk, Kayla Dreamer placed her hands on her hips, her small physique looking up at the tall, handsome boy with earnest.

“Derek… I always do your homework anyways!” Kayla yelled at her friend, he only grinned.

“Yes… but I need this potions homework done by the end of the day.”

She stared at the boy with a glare, see she would have just used magic earlier on this fight to just grab her book, but the sly Slytherin boy was smart enough to take her wand before he took her book. She sighed with defeat, she now understood why he took her book in the first place, and usually she wouldn’t do Derek’s homework until he’s done a little bit himself. Though it seemed like she had no choice if she wanted to get to Arithmancy class on time. “Fine, I’ll do your Potions homework.” She said with a sigh.

The handsome boy’s face immediately lit up as he stared down at his best friend, “Oh you truly are amazing Dreamer!” he exclaimed with excitement as he picked up the frustrated nerd in a hug, spinning her around in the air as he received many stares. Though Kayla received a few incoming glares from his many fan girls he had at this school, being a girl and the best friend of one of the most attractive guys in school is not always peaches and cream. “I love you Dreamer!” Derek exclaimed childishly as he set her small physique back down on the ground as he stared into the vividly green eyes, her dark black hair falling loosely in front of her face as just the hint of pink flushed her cheeks.

Kayla Dreamer stared into the dark brown eyes of her friend, she could feel her cheeks already heating up as she looked at him and still felt his strong arms wrapped around her. She’s never told him, but she’s fallen in love with her best friend, the cocky and arrogant Derek Night. Ever since she was a first year in Hogwarts, she always had some sort of feelings towards this boy, but she didn’t realize what they were until last summer, the summer before her seventh year. Now, here she was, seventeen years old, blushing like crazy as she stared at Mr. Night. “Whatever,” she replied coolly, trying to keep a cool head on her shoulders. “Just give me the essay and my book.”

Derek grinned as he handed her what she needed, “You know you’re awesome, right Dreamer?” Derek replied as Kayla rolled her eyes, before she could respond with a cynical remark she heard the all too annoying voice of Bridget White.

“Derek! There you are!” Bridget’s obnoxious voice rang through the courtyard as she literally pushed people out of the way to get to Derek. Bridget was Derek’s girlfriend, someone Kayla absolutely could not stand, especially since she was the type of girl Kayla could never see her best friend dating. Bridget was much taller than Kayla, though a few inches shorter than Derek, himself. She had short bleached blonde hair, unlike Kayla’s long coal like hair, and her eyes were bright baby blues. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you honey.”

Kayla rolled her eyes at the nicknames Bridget came up for the dark, slightly cynical Derek. He had confined in her that he hated the nicknames Bridget came up for him, which was always different every time she spoke to him. So whenever Bridget said something like this, Kayla couldn’t help but smile at her best friend in mock understanding. “Bridget, what are you doing here? I thought I’d meet you in Divination.”

“You silly goose, I came here so we could skip together.” Bridget said with a fake laughter as she turned her attention to the slowly retreating Dreamer girl. “What are you doing with her?”

Derek rolled his eyes at his girlfriend, “I was telling Dreamer here that it’s so unlike her to be late to class.” Derek said with a smirk as Kayla’s eyes widened once she heard the chime of the bell signaling the beginning of class.

“Oh bloody hell! Derek you’re such an arse!” Kayla yelled frustrated as she grabbed her books and wand from her friend, then started to turn and run in the direction of her class when she felt something tug her back. She turned around to see Derek holding onto her robe with a sly smirk placed on his face.

“Make sure to get that Potions essay done for me Dreamer.” Derek said with a grin as Kayla glared at him but nodded as she looked to see Bridget staring at her intensely.

“Well head up to your class freak.” Bridget said to her as Kayla bit her tongue, making sure she wouldn’t say anything. She just turned on her heels and ran in the direction of her Arithmancy class, but she couldn’t help but smile when she heard the yells of a fight erupting behind her.

Kayla collapsed down at the end of the Ravenclaw table in the Great Hall, thankful that dinner was finally here. She had, had a very long day. Not only had she been constantly teased in her classes like usually, but she was exhausted from the fact that she had to face Snape alone since Derek ditched her in Potions class. That arse, he would not hear the end of her ran when she saw him again. She sat at the end of the Ravenclaw table, ignoring the many stares she was receiving as she laid her head upon the table. No one was really her friend here, there were few but not too many. The only real friend was Derek Night, and even then she felt like they weren’t supposed to be friends.

Not only was he Slytherin, but he was almost the complete opposite of herself. He was confident, arrogant, rude, cynical, handsome, and popular and did not care about school. While, Kayla Dreamer was a nerd, reserved, shy, sarcastic, and selfless, and all she seemed to care about was her grades. She’s always beat herself up if she didn’t get good grades, it felt as if her dad would be disappointed in her if she gotten anything lower than Outstanding.

Kayla looked up from her spot looking for her best friend, noticing he wasn’t in the Great Hall, but she soon spotted Bridget coming towards her. Strange, why was Bridget here, but not Derek? Kayla thought to herself.

“You, freak.” Bridget seethed as she stared down at the dark beauty.

“Yes?” Kayla asked warily.

“Stop hanging around my boyfriend. You’re nothing but a burden and a hassle. Do you know what he has to go through to save your arse from all the teasing? He doesn’t deserve it, so why don’t you just go off in your little freak world.” Bridget lectured at Kayla as if she had done something horrible. Kayla just stared up at the plastic blonde, trying her best to not get upset, but that was getting hard.

“How am I supposed to do that when you’re already there?” Kayla asked with a smile as Bridget stared down at her angrily.

“I’m not a freak. Just leave Derek alone in peace so he can have a normal life, instead of always watching over you so little Miss Dreamer doesn’t get teased.” Bridget responded harshly as Kayla just stared at her, unsure what to say. What could she say? She was right, Kayla always knew she was bringing Derek down in some way; he was always sticking up for her and beating up people who teased her. Was she really that much of a burden?

“Hey Slytherin, why don’t you go back to the snake pit you belong in.” Kayla’s head turned towards the direction of the voice as she looked to see Charlie Snow approaching Bridget with her long auburn color hair flowing in curly locks down her back as her hazel eyes shown with a flash of anger. She was sporting the Ravenclaw attire as she approached the Queen Snake.

“What do you want Snow? I’m surprised you’re not wearing boy’s clothing Charlie.” Bridget responded with a grin as Charlie stopped in front of her with her arms crossed.

“Oh right, the mockery since my name is a boy’s name. Sorry I forgot you don’t have a sense of humor,” Charlie responded with a smile, Charlie was a lot like Kayla, getting teased for being slightly different. See Kayla was teased because she was overly intelligent, even for Ravenclaw, and Charlie was teased because she has a boy’s name. And she’s not the girliest girl alive like Bridget is. “Now go crawl back in that snake pit of yours. I don’t believe you’re considered smart enough to be in our House Bridget.”

Bridget glared at Charlie, “Whatever, just remember what I told you Dreamer.” Bridget said as she started to turn to leave, but she stopped and looked over her shoulder at Kayla with a smile, “You know your name really does suit you, because that’s all you are. You’re just a Dreamer, thinking you’ll be with my Derek that way. Just keep dreaming Dreamer.” And with that she turned and left Kayla there, pondering on what the blonde had told her, she disliked Bridget greatly, but she couldn’t help but think she was right.

“Don’t even think that she’s right Kayla.” Kayla heard a familiar voice as she looked to see Charlie still standing there looking intensely down at her friend. Charlie was the other girl friend she had really, and the only close friend besides Derek. “You deserve that arrogant, cocky Night boy than anybody else.”

Kayla rolled her eyes as she smiled at the naïve girl, “Charlie that will never happen. Derek and I are just best friends, nothing more. There can never be nothing more, we are just too different. We’re from two worlds…. Besides, if I can go ten years without telling Derek I’m sure I can go longer.”

“Kayla…. I really think you should tell him, you say he’s your best friend and best friends tell each other everything, then you should tell him how you feel. He’s a jerk, cocky and rude, but he’s sweet to you and I’m sure he’ll understand,” Charlie smirked as she continued, “You never know, maybe he’ll feel mutual.”

“He won’t. He’s dating Bridget.”

“I don’t know… I think that’s what she wants you to think, I’ve heard that they had a real big fight this morning and that’s why he’s not here right now.” Charlie explained as Kayla’s eyes widened. Of course, that why she had yet to see Derek since this morning, he was probably sulking. Immediately Kayla stood up gathering her stuff as Charlie looked up at her questionably. “Off to lover boy?”

Kayla’s cheeks tinted a tad as she looked down at her friend, “He’s probably sulking right now, and knowing him he’ll probably try and do something stupid if I’m not there.”

Charlie’s face twisted into an expression with pure happiness as she stared up at her friend, “Sure, well have fun with Derek, make sure to tell him a few things.” Charlie said to the blushing Kayla as she winked at her friend and moved off towards the Gryffindor table where her boyfriend sat laughing at his twin. Kayla smiled as she noticed Charlie scare Fred Weasley, causing him to fall to the floor. Fred had soon stood up and pulled Charlie in a bear hug threatening to change her hair color, Kayla couldn’t help but smile at the couple. They were completely perfect for each other, and they deserved each other, especially with what Charlie as been through.

With that Kayla turned around, wiping her long straight black hair behind her ear as she made her way out of the Great Hall. She soon began to walk faster down the dark corridors, heading to the one place she knew Derek would be.

Kayla squeezed herself through the narrow corridor on the fourth floor as she entered the room, immediately noticing the Mirror of Erised in the middle of the room and a familiar figure sitting in front of it, staring into the Mirror. Kayla placed her things down next to the entrance of the room and slowly made her way to the dark figure sitting down. She walked slowly and plopped down next to the boy. “Hey.” It was the only word he said to her as she looked over to see Derek staring intently into the mirror.

“Hey…” she replied quietly as she looked at her best friend, studying his face. She knew his face so well now; his handsome features were brought out in the most significant ways. He was slightly pale, but that didn’t matter, for he had a strong chin, dark eyes and dark hair. His eyes held an air of mystery about them as you stared into them, and his face was just… perfect. “I heard about the fight.” Kayla finally blurted out after a few moments of silence.

Derek turned towards his friend and smiled as he arched an eyebrow at her suddenness, “Oh? And why did you hear may I ask Dreamer?”

“Well not much… just that you had a fight, so I thought you would be sulking and I figured this would be the place you would be. I was correct.” Kayla responded with a smile as she stared at the Night boy who grinned slyly.

“Who said I was sulking? Maybe I just wanted to see myself even more handsome in the mirror.” Derek responded cockily as Kayla rolled her eyes at the boy.

“We both know you don’t see yourself in the Mirror Derek.” Kayla replied as she stared into the Mirror, she knew what Derek saw in the mirror, he saw his little brother. The brother that was supposed to be a third year now, but he died when he was eight. It inherited an incurable disease that his mother had, he, unlike his mother, died. It was too small and fragile to be able to overcome it. Derek had told me one day that whenever he looks in the mirror he sees his younger brother, grinning at Derek with a broom on his hand. Ethan, Derek’s little brother, was always bragging how he was going to be the next seeker in the Chudley Cannons.

“No I suppose you’re right…. Ethan is still there, staring at me with that goofy grin of his.” Derek replied staring into the mirror as Kayla dared not look into the mirror herself, she knew what would be staring back at her. “Ethan is telling me to tell you what happened between me and Bridget.”

Kayla stared at the boy incredulously, she had known that you could actually hear the images in your head, but Derek had never shared what Ethan would say to him. “Are you going to?”

Derek shrugged as he looked down at Kayla, “Why not? You’re my best friend we tell each other everything.” Derek replied looking down at Kayla with that cocky grin of his, Kayla immediately felt as if she’d been hit with the backhand of guilt. Was this fate trying to tell her something? Was she supposed to hide her feelings?

“Before you tell me Derek…. Do you know what I see in the mirror?” Kayla asked curiously looking up at her best friend and then straight in the mirror. Derek stared down at his nerd for a best friend, her black square glasses covering most of her face.

“Your dad, of course, don’t just think because I’m good looking doesn’t mean I don’t know what you see in the mirror. Dreamer.” Derek replied with a cocky smile as he called his best friend by her last name, it was not only her last name it was her nickname. Because it described her perfectly, she was a dreamer. Kayla smiled slightly as she looked back up at her best friend.

“I did…. But I don’t see my dad anymore.” Kayla replied with a hesitant smile, Derek was slightly taken back. When had she stopped seeing her Dad in the mirror? She had always seen her dad, ever since they discovered this place and she said she loved him dearly and missed him, what would she see in replace of him?

“When did it change?”

“A while back ago… I just never told you because I didn’t want to freak you out.” Kayla responded as she stared at the mirror with a soft expression.

“What do you see now?” Derek asked questionably, his eagerness getting the best of him.

Kayla turned towards to him and smiled, “This,” she responded, “All I see is this, you and me, sitting together with each other. All I see if you Derek.”

Derek’s heart seemed to skip a beat when Kayla said this; it felt as if something just took out the floor from under him. What was she saying? She saw him? Why? “Why?” he blurted out before even thinking as Kayla sighed but smiled.

“Because…. I love you, more than just a best friend. I’m in love with you.” Kayla responded as she stared up at Derek on the floor. Derek, speechless, just stared at her shocked. He wanted to say something, to say what he had happened between Bridget and him, but he wasn’t expecting this from Kayla, no not in a million years would he expect this. “I know you don’t feel the same way, but Charlie was right… I needed to tell you, before I lose you forever. Who knows… maybe you and Bridget will end up marrying one another after school… I just wanted you to know Derek.”

Kayla stood up getting ready to leave as Derek sat there speechless, he had never been speechless before. He was always so confident and cocky with people, he was never speechless with Bridget or nervous around her. Even though Derek knew why he was nervous and speechless, who couldn’t help but be upset. As Kayla was heading towards the narrow passageway Derek’s mind seemed to click, he immediately stood up and ran after her. “Kayla, wait!”

Kayla stopped as she turned around and looked up at the boy, his shaggy brown hair falling slightly in his face as he ran towards her. He looked down at her; he never truly realized just how beautiful she really was. The braces she wore when she was seven really did wonders for her teeth as they shown perfect white straight pearls, her black hair lay beautifully down her back as her vivid green eyes shown up at him through her square glasses, which were actually cute on her. Even though Kayla was a lot smaller than him and slightly undeveloped it worked well for her. “I have to tell you what happened between Bridget and me.”

“Derek… I really don’t want to know how you two made up…” Kayla responded sourly as Derek regretted all those past times of telling Kayla how he would make up with Bridget ever time they would have a fight. It must have been torture for her.

“No, you’ll want to hear this.” Derek said as Kayla stared at him hesitantly, “Please.” He pouted as he knew that would make her give in, he was right.

“Alright…” she said quietly as she stopped trying to leave.

“When Bridget called you a freak after you left I was upset. I told her she wasn’t supposed to call you that; she knows how I feel about how people call you that. We got in this big argument over you, how I’m always protecting you and taking your sides in things. She’s always getting jealous because I want to hang out with you more than with her. I told her that was because you’re my best friend and we do everything together. But she wouldn’t have it; she told me I had to choose. You or her.” Derek said as he stared down at Kayla trying to read her emotion, she stared up at him wide eyes.

She knew exactly where this was going, she was not only going to get her heart broken, but she would lose her best friend. She knew that Derek would choose his girlfriend, I mean what boyfriend wouldn’t? And Derek was going to try to break it to her nicely. “Stop…. I know what you’re going to say next. Look I get it Derek; I’ll stop clinging to you like a safety net…” Kayla responded quickly and quietly as she looked down at her feet trying her best not to cry, but it felt as if her heart was breaking.

“Will you shut up Dreamer; I’m trying to tell you the rest of what happened.” Derek responded rudely as Kayla glared up at him.

“Well I’m sorry I don’t want to hear you say you chose Bridget!” Kayla yelled as the tears broke through her vision, Derek only smiled softly at the, now, crying girl.

“I didn’t pick Bridget.”

Kayla looked up at Derek oddly, confused washed over her face like a wave. “W-What?” she stuttered.

“I told her that I pick you. At first I didn’t understand why I said that, I though I just told her that so make her mad and to leave me alone… but then I realized why I said it…. It’s because I love teasing you, I love messing with you, and most importantly, I’m in love with you Dreamer. I didn’t realize it until I thought I was going to lose you.” Derek said looking down at the girl with a sly smile.

“You’re….”

“In love with you.” Derek finished with a sly smile, “Understand? I love you.”

Kayla just gawked up at Derek, unsure of what to say, of what to believe. Was this really happening? Could it really be happening?

“Are you going to just gawk at my good looking face or say something Dreamer?” Derek asked with a smirk as Kayla swallowed what was left of her fear.

“Prove it.”

Derek gave her a mischievous smile as he looked down at her, “As you wish.”

Then as if everything moved in slow motion, Derek Night moved in closer to the small dark haired face as he pressed his lips upon her slightly salty full lips. Kayla’s eyes widened for only a split second before she soon melted into the kiss, she wrapped her arms around her best friends’ neck and deepened the kiss. Derek’s hands were placed on her hips as he smiled into the kiss.

There’s nothing better than falling in love with your best friend.
