"It's not like I wanted to be like this. I never intended to be a freak. . ."

------------------

I don't remember what happened. All I know is that, during the middle of class, I felt strange. Strange, like all my senses suddenly got kicked to like.. a million percent! So, I did what any normal person would do and excused myself.

When I left, I dashed to the bathroom to down some pills I usually kept on me. I wasn't a stranger to migraines and shit, and it wasn't like I was trying to sell my meds, so teachers never really bothered me about them. So, anyways. I got to the bathroom and dug through my pockets, right? Then, while digging, I felt something tickle my back. It wasn't even subtle, it was like a full on 'something is there' type feeling.

So, I rushed to a stall and pulled off my shirt. Out of curiosity, of course, don't be creepy. And there they were. I couldn't see the entire thing, but from what I could gather from my peripheral? Wings. Now, that's what truly sent me into panic.

After that, I don't remember anything else of what happened. Nothing. Nothing at all. When I woke up, I saw a teacher's face staring down at me in horror. The gaze that she had made me worry, so not only was I confused, but now I was panicking. Again. There were no words leaving either of us as we stared. Though, there were a few times I thought she was about to say something, but she closed her mouth before she let the sentence out.

It was going nowhere. So, finally, I spoke up. "May I go home?" Was all I could think of asking. I was NOT going to deal with this, and I figured that the staff wouldn't want me disturbing the others and their learning with my new, weird, deformity. Is that what it is? I'm not too sure. Whatever I have going on with me, I knew it wasn't normal. In the slightest.

The teacher gave me a slow nod, and with a sigh of relief, I dashed out of there almost immediately. I didn't even bother to grab the bottle of otc meds on the floor. Didn't bother to collect all my stuff scattered against the floor. I just wanted to leave.

And so, I walked home. My mother wasn't expecting me, so it came of some surprise when she opened the door to see her daughter looking down in shame. I tugged at my shirt, trying to hide the awkward bump on my back. But, she knew something was off immediately. And she pulled me into one of her stupid mom hugs. Luckily for me, she didn't feel the twitching wings under the fabric of my shirt. Or she did, and just didn't want to comment on it. I wasn't sure.

"Honey.." Her tone was quiet and soothing. She had always known just how to cheer me up, and that's why I loved her. Even with my dad out of the picture, she was still able to be a good parent. "Why are you home so early?"

"I felt sick." I responded, trying my best to not look so dubious. It was hard. I suck at lying.

With a pat on the back, she allowed me to enter. Her hand motioned to my room, in a sort of way to tell me to rest up. So, without another word, I entered the comfort of my abode, and fell down onto my bed face first.

The wings. They were really uncomfortable. Like picture rugburn. Now picture it ten times worse. I lifted my head from my pillow and let out a large sigh, rolling off my bed with a thud. From outside my door, I heard my mom yell "Are you okay?!" in which I just responded with a quick "Yeah."

When I stood up, I glanced at my vanity mirror to get a better picture of the things plastered onto my back. If they weren't so painful, I honestly would have thought they were cool as hell. Tinted green, they sort of had the appearance similar to a luna moth. No. They were the wings of a luna moth. It was uncanny, just looking at them confused me.

The top of the vanity had multiple papers and objects on top of it. I banged my head on the tabletop, which knocked a few things over, including a collectible David Bowie figure I bought a while ago. I didn't bother to fix it up much before I walked out of my room. My wings uncomfortably flapped behind me, as I spotted my mom reading the paper on the couch.

And for a quick second, I regretted my choice. I didn't want my mom to know, but I knew I couldn't get help if I didn't tell her. And just then, when she looked up, I froze in place. Dang, I was screwed now. No turning back I guess.

"I don't know what's wrong with me." I whimpered and hid my face. She didn't seem alarmed in the slightest, and it confused me a ton. Though, I did notice her widened eyes. It was the only sign of worry on her.

"Nice wings." She said, with a snicker.

Haha. Very funny. I was laughing soooo hard. Anyways. I responded, clearly not amused by her humour. "I'm a monster."

Her answer confused me a ton. "No, you're a mutant."

A mutant?! What on earth did that even mean! It just confused me so much more than before. When I thought my situation couldn't get any worse, it did.

"I'm a what?"

"A mutant."

------------------

For the next few days I stayed home. Out of my own comfort, of course. I felt like a freak. I hated this new monstrosity I had become. My mom tried to explain the mutancy thing to me, but good God. For the life of me.. I didn't get any of it.

I feel as if it is worth mentioning that, alongside these stupid wings, there was also more to this. My senses were like.. Heightened. It was weird. My sense of smell was changed, everything was so much stronger now and it was, honestly, disgusting. My hearing also got cranked up, even from a good distance, I could hear practically everything. Touch? Even my sense of TOUCH changed. Everything was so overstimulating, clothes felt weird against my skin. Cold things felt ten times colder than normal. The only thing that hasn't changed was sight and taste.

It wasn't until about a week later from the discovery that something happened. Just as I was getting used to living life as a mutant.

"Y/N, honey, you have a visitor!" Yelled my mother from afar, though she didn't really need to raise her volume for me to hear her. I let out a loud groan and shouted back almost immediately.

"Tell them I'm not home,"

It's just my luck that my mom invited the stranger in. Whoever it was. I heard them talk outside my door before my mom opened it almost a split second later. When the knob turned, I was met with my mothers irritated stare.

She cleared her throat, and remarked. "Ahem. This is professor Charles Xavier. He has some business with you."

I gave her a look, but in return she continued staring daggers at me. She knew I didn't want company, and I even told her a few times that I needed time to relax. So seeing this old man didn't comfort me in the slightest.

Silence filled the room for a good minute, before finally, the man, who I now knew as Charles Xavier, spoke. "What's got you down?" That is, until I noticed his lips weren't moving.

My eyes widened as a response, my jaw ever so slightly dropped. At first I thought I was going crazy, until he planted another thought into my brain. "As you know, your body is going through some ch-"

I cut him off before he finished. "Holy crap!" I blurted out and pointed a finger at the old guy. He seemed to be getting a bit impatient, but he kept his cool, shockingly. My mom seemed confused by my sudden yell. It was clear she wasn't hearing the same thing I had been hearing. So, she just left the room.

"That's trippy, dude!" I added onto my original exclamation. But, before I could say much more, he hushed me.

"Telepathy. It was the gift given to me. We are similar, you know? We as mutants need to look out for each other. That's why I'm here."

"I still don't get the whole mutant thing."

"Over the years, as humans evo-"

I groaned when I realized where this was going. He narrowed his eyes. I narrowed mine. "Cliff Notes please?"

It shocked me how patient he had been with me. I would've punched myself by this point of the story. Anyways, so he nodded gently and thought up a quick summary. "We have a special gene that gives us our quirks." My head nodded, as this explanation was far more comprehensible than my mothers.

"Ah. So what are you here for?"

"I have a proposal."

"I'm underage." Haha! I'm so funny guys! Nice one Y/N! I giggled at my own joke, but clearly mister Charles Xavier wasn't all that appreciative of it. Ouch.

"Not that kind of proposal."

"I know. I know. Sooo, what is it then?"

"How would you feel about going to a school. An all mutant school of sorts, where you can learn to control your gifts. A place where all mutants work alongside each other, where they all fit in." While he spoke, he wheeled his way into my room more and took it all in.

Well, it was certainly an offer. And an offer that made me feel way more different than I already was feeling. "It's not like I wanted to be like this. I never intended to be a freak... I shouldn't have to go to your super secret school for outcasts."

"Never said you had to. I was just throwing it out there."

"I said no. Goodbye, mister... uhhhhh. Xavier? You can take your leave now, toodles!"

"Y/N. At least give it a day. Your mom was really worried about you and contacted me. Just give it a chance and you won't be bothered again."

It took me a minute to think of reasons I should go. For the most part, it seemed like if I did end up going, it's me running away from my home. I'd miss it a ton. I really would. But, as crappy of a deal it was, I also had to factor in that.. I'm not a normal teenager anymore. I'm some weird moth thing. I don't belong here anymore. So a place where I could fit in didn't seem all that bad.. Ugh! I hate being indecisive! This isn't fair!

"One day?" I questioned with hesitancy. It seemed like he knew something I didn't by the stupid smirk on his face.

"One day."

"..." My lips pursed in as I thought, and my eyes narrowed. I didn't want to let the old English guy have satisfaction so quickly. So, after a few seconds of silence, I gave him a clear answer. "Color me interested."
