As the group pressed forward on their mission, Elara couldn't shake the feeling of apprehension that gnawed at her insides. Amidst the determined strides of the men around her, she felt like a fish out of water, uncertain of her role in the unfolding operation.

Summoning her courage, she turned to the man beside her, a seasoned warrior whose name she had yet to learn. "Excuse me," she began tentatively, her voice barely above a whisper amidst the hushed murmurs of the group. "Could you tell me more about the mission?"

The man's response was swift and unexpected as he playfully slapped her on the back, a gesture of camaraderie that caught Elara off guard. "Well, well, looks like we've got a curious one here," he chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement.

With a sheepish grin, he proceeded to fill Elara in on the details of their mission, explaining that they were tasked with leaving a false trail to deceive the queen's guard. "We're going to split into two groups," he began, gesturing towards the assembled men. "One group will head north, while the other heads south. Our goal is to lead the queen's guard on a wild goose chase, making them think we're heading in different directions."

Elara nodded, absorbing the plan as he continued. "We'll leave signs of our passage along the way—broken branches, footprints, the works. But we won't be heading to where we're leading them. Instead, we'll circle back to town under the cover of darkness once we're sure they're following the false trail."

As he spoke, the seriousness of their mission settled over the group like a heavy cloak, each man understanding the risks involved. Yet, there was a sense of camaraderie and determination among them, a shared purpose that bound them together in the face of adversity.

Despite the gravity of the situation, the man's tone remained light-hearted, his confidence bolstering the spirits of those around him. "Easy enough, right?" he quipped, his words infused with a touch of humor that belied the danger lurking on the horizon.

Elara breathed a sigh of relief at the simplicity of their assignment, grateful for the opportunity to contribute in some small way. But her relief was short-lived as the man's next words sobered her spirits. "Of course, we'll still have to face the guards head-on," he added with a wry smile, his eyes glinting with a mixture of determination and wariness.

His grin widened as he regaled the group with tales of previous encounters with the queen's guards, each anecdote more embellished than the last. "You should have seen it," he boasted, his voice laced with a hint of pride. "We were outnumbered and outgunned, but we held our ground like true warriors. Took down half a dozen of 'em before they even knew what hit 'em."

Elara's heart sank as she listened to the man's tales of past encounters with the queen's guards. Each embellished anecdote painted a picture of perilous battles and daunting odds, sending a shiver down her spine. Despite his confident demeanor, the gravity of their situation weighed heavily on her mind, filling her with a deep sense of unease.

As the man boasted of their past victories, Elara's nerves began to fray, her stomach twisting into knots with each passing word. The thought of facing the queen's formidable guards sent a wave of apprehension coursing through her, her hands trembling ever so slightly at the mere prospect of battle.

Elara's thoughts swirled with doubt and fear as she contemplated the perilous journey ahead. The tales of bravery and valor exchanged among the men only served to deepen her sense of inadequacy. What chance did she, a mere maid with no training or experience in combat, stand against the queen's seasoned warriors?

The weight of Lysander's decision to include her in the mission bore down on her shoulders, a heavy burden that threatened to crush her resolve. Despite her unwavering loyalty and unwavering dedication to his cause, she couldn't shake the nagging doubt that she was ill-equipped for the dangers that lay ahead.

With a heavy heart, Elara couldn't help but question Lysander's judgment. After all she had done for him, risking life and limb to ensure his safety, was this how he repaid her loyalty? By thrusting her into a battle for which she was woefully unprepared?

The bitter sting of betrayal gnawed at her insides as she grappled with the harsh reality of her situation. If they were to face the queen's men head-on, she knew her chances of survival were slim at best. In that moment of doubt and despair, Elara couldn't help but wonder if she had been nothing more than a pawn in Lysander's game all along.
