Obsession is
Like a leech enveloped in fur,
One you brush
Call your own
Sleep beside at night;
One that wakes you with
Sweet cooings and morning songs as
It swallows the dulling stars you count each evening together.
Your heart knows better-
It races, hooves beating ferociously
In the opposite direction, the tug force
Of three times its weight.
You rip
And bleed
And fall
As they walk away, their life without you
Swaddled safely in both arms.
Your hearts pulp can't be sieved
So it lies in clumps at the bottom
Of its ivory cage,
Waiting patiently until you rediscover that
All too familiar ceramicist, with the gentle,
Calloused hands of a potter
Who used to brush
Call their own
And sleep beside
That creation they once loved
So much.
