Ellie's age : 15 years 3 months.

Thea's POV:

"Now push the plunger."

"Ew- Nope I'm not doing this!"

I throw the tampon on the bathroom floor and storm out of the bathroom, frustration etched on my face. Maria, stands there, seemingly unsurprised.

She wearily rubs the space between her eyes, tired from dealing with my reluctance to use a tampon. "It's not that hard; try again," she insists.

But I refuse, I don't want to get into that piece of plastic in me. "That thing is huge; it won't fit!"

Maria groans, "Of course it'll fit. Want me to do it for you?" I immediately decline, opting for a piece of thick cotton, our alternative to pads.

"This will do just fine!" I declare, holding the piece of thick cotton. I head back into the bathroom, and I can hear Maria sigh in resignation. "Fine, it's your choice," she mutters as she walks out of my room.

In front of the bathroom mirror, I stare at myself, uncertain if I'm dressed according to the dress code set by Cat.

I'm sure it'll do just fine. I let my blonde hair cascade down to my hips, the waves forming from the braid I had worn all day.

Thoughts of Ellie, who had vanished since last night after a sleepover, linger in my mind. I remember how cute she looked in my pink silky pajamas, though they were found messily folded on my wardrobe in the morning. Whatever, it's time to get going.

Dina and Jesse, both invited to Cat's party, will be there, offering some hope for an enjoyable time. I've brought Cat a special box of chocolate made by Seth, a rarity these days. Maybe it'll soften her up a bit, but knowing Cat, she'll likely continue disliking me.

"Maria, I'm heading out!" I call, and after her farewells, I close the front door behind me, making my way down the steps.

Noticing Ellie's absence with her garage lights off, I reach Cat's house in less than 10 minutes. The pulsating music and teenagers streaming in give me the impression that I can enter freely.

Stepping inside, my eyes widen at the different colors of lights, a throng of dancing teens in the living room, and a kitchen brimming with drinks and couples engaging in questionable activities—nasty, but expected with no sign of Cat's parents.

After scanning the entryway without finding Dina or Jesse, my attention is drawn to the lively living room where I spot Dina, lost in dance. Making my way towards her, I skillfully sidestep a drink offered by a boy, looking slightly dazed.

"Dina!" I call out, and she swiftly turns, a smile gracing her lips. She waves for me to join her in the midst of the lively party.

I notice a group of boys shifting couches away, creating space in the midst of the dance floor. Dina spots me, and before I know it, her hands find mine, pulling me into the rhythm.

My arms lift, moving with the beat that echoes through the speakers. For the next hour, Dina and I lose track of time, staying in the heart of the dance floor, immersed in the music and the energetic atmosphere.

Dancing with Jesse, I nearly send Ellie's drink flying. I question its contents—punch juice, maybe?

"Having fun?" Ellie calls out, sipping the red liquid. I nod, smiling, and gesture towards her drink, "What's that?"

She hands it to me with an unsure look herself, and after a hesitant moment, I swallow it. The stinging sensation and disgusting taste make me cough a bit. Ellie chuckles, taking the empty glass and placing it on a table.

Just as she's about to speak, the song changes, and Jesse cheers, leading me away.

Play "She Knows- Ne-Yo."

"I love this song!" Jesse exclaims, guiding my arms up and singing every lyric, my locks swaying at my every move. Dina joins us, declaring,

"You're officially coming with me!" The party erupts into singing the lyrics, and Dina twirls me around, dancing intimately.

Somehow, after that drink, my body loosens up, moving on its own. I sense someone's gaze burning at my back, but it slips my mind as a group of girls grab me, forcing me to dance with them.

That's when my mind blacks out and I continue dancing.

As hours pass, Cat finally makes an appearance, her hair styled and adorned in a short dress. Whispers about her stunning look fill the air, and I can't deny she looks amazing – a sentiment shared by many, including myself.

Ellie's love-struck expression upon seeing Cat for the first time is priceless. Ellie attaches herself to Cat for the rest of the party.

In the near end, everyone gathers around Cat and Ellie when Ellie helps Cat put on a necklace. I choose to stand back, watching from afar while sipping on my drink. Fidgeting with the straw, boredom sets in. Despite being happy for Ellie, the person she's chosen to be lovey-dovey with is not my favorite.

Amidst the crowd, cheers erupt when Cat squeals, turning around for Ellie to tie the necklace. Pausing my fidgeting, I watch attentively as Cat lifts her black hair so Ellie can secure the necklace.

The moment becomes even more intense when Cat cups Ellie's face in a deep kiss. The initially shocked silence turns into happy screams, congratulating the couple. Dina breaks away from the crowd, approaching me.

"They make me feel so lonely," she whines, pouring a drink for herself. I roll my eyes, giggling, "You've got Jesse waiting for you." I nod towards Jesse, looking around in confusion.

Dina gasps, a rosy tint on her cheeks. "I'll be back..." she says, doubtfully, before chuckling as she reaches Jesse.

Here I am, feeling lonely again as the crowd returns to dancing. Glancing at my present in the stack near the doorway, I hope the chocolates haven't melted..

Romantic songs fill the air, and couples take the dance floor, embracing each other. Ellie and Cat stand out in the center, Ellie visibly sweating from the close proximity to Cat.

I wish I could experience such a moment with someone too.

After a series of romantic songs, an unfamiliar tune starts playing. I spot Jesse switching up the speakers, a grin forming on my face as I observe Cat's annoyed expression. Couples retreat from the dance floor, making way for everyone to jump in and dance. I debate joining, but the ache in my legs disagrees.

Yet, Ellie seems to have different plans, walking toward me with a stupid smile.

"Theadora, alone in a party?" she inquires, a smirk on her face as she stretches her palm toward me.

I huff, sipping on my drink. "I've danced too much."

Ellie scoffs, "Does that mean you'd reject my invitation for a dance?" My eyes widen, but I relax as the alcohol starts to kick in. Grinning, I drop the glass on a table or maybe the floor—I'm too dizzy to notice.

Grabbing Ellie's collar, I lead her to the center of the dance floor as the song switches to one I've heard frequently on the radio.

Ahem, Alexa, play Take On Me by A-ha

Ellie appears unfamiliar with the song, an unsure look on her face. I lean in close to her ear and yell over the music,

"It's called Take On Me!"

She nods, and as the song begins, we start dancing together. I guide her arms, moving them in sync with mine. Despite the occasional tripping on my shoes and bumping into others, we have a blast dancing around the room.

Ellie seems to grow fond of the song, singing the lyrics in a messy but enthusiastic way.

The song seems to go on forever, to the point where Ellie's hair tie falls out, leaving her hair to frame her face in a messy way that I find even more appealing than the ponytail. The changing lighting in the room adds to the euphoria.

After the song ends, we both collide with the dinner table. I sit down and rest my head on the table.

That's where everything blacks out.

Waking up in Dina's bedroom, sweaty and reeking of alcohol, wasn't the highlight of my life. My back aches from sleeping on her couch, and the room is filled with the snores of Jesse and Dina.

Feeling like utter crap, I muster the strength to get up. Thankfully, Dina lets me use her shower to rid myself of the vile scent of alcohol.

As I leave her place to head home, my only reminders of the previous night are a pounding headache and dazed eyes. Tommy catches me sneaking home, chuckling at my wobbly attempts to stand still.

Fortunately, Maria is at work, sparing me from her potential scolding. I plead with Tommy to keep this incident a secret, and he agrees, sharing how Joel dealt with Ellie after she came home completely drunk.

Now, as a consequence, I find myself obligated by Tommy to buy groceries, the only condition he set to keep him from spilling the beans to Maria. I let out a groan at the buzzing sound in the side of my head. This is not how I wanted to spend my Friday.

As I toss fruits and vegetables into my shopping basket, engaging in bartering with the shopping lady to aid the hunters. When I find myself busy staring at the different but identical eggs, I felt someone pat my shoulder. I jump, resisting the urge to scream when I'm met with Ezekiel's sudden presence. He looks surprisingly clean, and I can't help but wonder if he's shaved.

"Long time no see," he smiles, planting a kiss on my cheek. His touch leaves me blushing. Clearing my throat, I respond, "Mhm—How have you been?" I try to keep it casual, but the way his shirt fits him distracts me.

He shrugs, "I've missed you, ever since Mika kicked you out."

I giggle, asking, "Well, how was camp after I left?"

"Terrible," he grimaces, "I begged if he could let you stay. It didn't work." He rubs the space between his eyes, then notices my shopping basket.

"Grocery shopping? Here," he offers, taking my basket. I'm surprised as he navigates the store, selecting perfect eggs and adding them gently to my basket. Trying not to swoon, I follow him, my attention occasionally wandering to his lips.

Ezekiel even shares tips on finding the best-quality fruits. I'm captivated, my gaze lingering on his lips. When I ask for a break due to my wobbly legs, he looks concerned.

"You okay? You look slightly... rough," he observes. Groaning, I crouch forward on a seat, gripping my head tightly, the pain relentless.

He pats my hair, suggesting, "I've got a special recipe to reduce the pain." Excited, I jump up, asking, "Really? What?"

"Water," he says with a chuckle. I roll my eyes, scowling. He laughs, proposing we continue shopping, and afterward, his mom can make a remedy for my headache.

The next I know is his fingers intertwining with mine as he leads me into another store.

Racing down the stairs, my socks hastily thrown on, the irresistible scent of freshly made coffee wafts through the air, hitting my nostrils with its strong yet delicious aroma. I hurry to the cupboard where the shoes are stacked, and my racing heart calms at the sight of the converse I've chosen for the day.

The end of summer is officially marked as soon as I step beyond the school gates, and while I'm a bit sad about it ending so soon, the thought of reuniting with my friends at school lifts my spirits.

"Hon', don't forget your lunch!" Maria's voice echoes from across the corridor. I scoff, fully aware that her reminders are necessary; otherwise, I might just leave the lunchbox behind. Finishing the process of putting on my converse, I pass by her, dropping my lunch into my messenger bag.

Tommy's usual role of dropping me off at school was replaced by his demanding work schedule, but surprisingly, I wasn't disappointed because I had Ellie.

The first day back to school loomed, and I felt the need to check on Ellie, anticipating she might sleep in. Our school schedules arrived yesterday, but I hadn't had the chance to discuss our classes with Ellie since she was gone when I knocked on her door.

"I hope she's awake," I mumble, scrutinizing myself in the mirror. My freshly washed hair cascades down my back.

Thea's outfit: https://pin.it/3jwrvS3Nu

I'm pretty, no need to dwell on it. I nonchalantly throw my messenger bag over my shoulder. Grabbing the last peach from the fruit basket, I indulge in a satisfying bite. Maria bids me farewell as I step out the front door.

Crossing the street, I climb over their fence, entering Ellie's garden which had her garage—a space that has become oddly familiar through our countless sleepovers over the past month. A soft knock on the wooden door, and it immediately swings open, revealing Ellie emerging from the garage.

She's clad in her usual attire: a graphic oversized shirt, denim shorts, and black Converse.

"wassup?" she lazily asks, resembling someone who just rolled out of bed. I embrace her quickly before taking her bag, hanging loosely from her arm, and tossing it over one shoulder. "c'mon! don't be so depressed," I say, fixing the front of her hair as I lead her out of the garden.

"how'd you sleep?" We grab our skateboards before fully exiting the garden. "hm...? real bad; my eyes are so sore," Ellie confesses, settling on the front porch.

"can we... can we just not go?" She whines when I shake my head.

Pulling her up from her sitting position, I inquire, "did you eat breakfast?" She nods, placing her skateboard on the ground, getting ready.

"you ready? hope you didn't forget how to control it." Glancing at me, she sees me taking my last bite of the peach and tossing it into the bushes. I step on my skateboard, nodding at her to do the same.

Ellie glares at the path ahead, dread flickering across her face. "School, here we come!" She jumps onto her skateboard, making it go extremely quickly, effortlessly riding along the path.

I sigh before following right after her, seamlessly getting on my skateboard in a practiced manner. Ellie had took her time to teach me how to skateboard last month and I guess all her hard work paid off. I was able to skateboard around, but the cool tricks that she could do, I couldn't bother learning them.

We arrived at the school building in no time, finding it filled with kids. Ellie and I discreetly stashed our skateboards behind a bush, just in case someone got any funny ideas.

"that's so annoying..." Ellie muttered, frowning at the sight of teenagers and children streaming into the building, and the lengthy line for 10th graders and up. I sigh before leading us to stand in line.

Once it's my turn, the security guard's
stern expression falters, and I swear I saw a smirk when he rolled his eyes.

I give him a casual greeting, chuckling, "missed me?" He scoffs, "yeah, right."

Giggling, I wait for Ellie before walking to the building designated for us older kids.
"I didn't ask yet, but what class are you in?" I ask as we ascend the stairs. Ellie frowns, deeply contemplating before yelling, "10 B!"

My heart sinks, "Oh... I'm in 10 C." That sucks; I won't have Ellie beside me. The auburn-haired girl cusses and groans, rubbing the space between her eyes.

"If you're not with me, then who am I with?" She mumbles, glancing disappointingly at the hallway as we reach the top.

She gives me a good luck pat on the shoulder as she enters her class, leaving me alone. I nervously walk towards my class's door, knocking before opening it. My palms start sweating when the whole class stares at me; the teacher glances at me before pointing at a seat.

Thankfully, it's next to the window.

As the nerve-racking-looking man explains the work we'll be doing this year, I observe my classmates. None of them look familiar except Julian. I place my palm on my forehead at the thought of enduring a whole year with a class where I know no one.

Ugh...

I start fidgeting with my pencil, feeling a bit bored already. The man turned out to be our science teacher, and he's quite intimidating. My favorite subject paired with the worst possible teacher. The whole day drags on slowly; I meet all my teachers, none of them familiar.

When break finally rolls around, I quickly approach Julian.

"Hey! We're in the same class this year," I chuckle, attempting to break the awkward tension he seems to exude with his glare. He nods, standing up and about to walk out of class.

I bite my lip at my failed attempt and tap his shoulder, "Do you know where the others are?"

He ruffles his blond hair, shaking his head, "..no. I'm looking for my other friends." He leaves. I let out a huff, turning to scan the class for any potentially nice person I could talk to.

None.

They all have their little groups, making me feel left out. I suck in a breath before approaching three girls who sit in front of me.

I pat one of their shoulders, making them all turn to me. "Hi uhm- I was wondering if we could be friends—?" They turn around, going back to their conversation, as if I was never there.

Jeez, okay, nice.

Patting another ones of their shoulders again, this one turns around, a confused look on her face.

"My name's Theadora, and you?" I smile, watching her contemplate if she should respond.

"..Katleen." She nervously twiddled with her skirts fabric, glancing at her two other friends. I nod, shaking her hand, "Nice name, you're from...?"

She pulls out a chair from behind her, patting the seat so that I could sit, "Bangladesh!"

I hum, nodding, peeking at her other friends, who stare at me hesitantly.

The one with pin straight hair speaks up first, smirking dismissively, "Honestly, we've got our own thing going on, and adding a new person just..complicates stuff. No offense, but we don't need extra drama."

Feeling a surge of indignation, I smirk back, "I'm just looking for people worth getting to know. But hey, if you're not up for that, no hard feelings."

As I start to walk away, their expressions shift, realizing that maybe I'm not an easy pushover. The same girl grabs my arm, "Wait, wait! I guess we could give it a shot. I mean, you seem kind of interesting."

I turn back with a raised eyebrow, "Kind of interesting?"

She blushes slightly, "Okay, really interesting. Let's be friends.."

I frown at their sudden change of attitude, "What made you reconsider?" The same girl giggles and gestures for me to sit down.

"Well, typically, no one dares to approach our table— we're known as those girls that are unapproachable, but in a good way. You caught our attention by how gracefully you handled our teasing.. Consider yourself part of our friend group now!" She extends her tanned arm, offering a welcoming smile.

I shake her hand, admiring her colorful fingernails.

"Nice to meet you, Kendra," she continues, placing a hand on the curly-haired girl sitting beside her, "and this is Nadine."

Nadine glances up at me, waving and complimenting, "I like your lip gloss."

I sat next to Katleen for the next hour of break, chatting away with the three of them.

Fall had started, the air has become crisper and the smell of coffee filled the streets.

School, everyday.

A lot has changed in a month.

I had become automatically close to the trio to the point people had started shrinking themselves whenever I walked past in the hallway. It made me feel bad but deep down, I liked the fact that people stopped thinking so low of me.

I had learned that behind her cold demeanor, Nadine was actually fun to be around. She loved to make jewelry, making some for me as a usual kind gesture.

As a result of me getting placed in another class, I now rarely see Dina, Jesse and Vivienne. Julian never paid me mind even if we were in the class, his friends always surrounding him. Vivienne would hug me every time she saw me in the hallway but it seems like she's met her own group of people too.

Ellie landed a spot in the boy's basketball team and is officially the first girl in the team. She's been really busy with the training and tends to finish later than me. I don't see her much after our stupid argument.

Dina and Jesse started dating, and I would often pass by them snogging in the hallways. I was genuinely happy for them. Finally, after dropping hints all summer, they got together. Dina would wave occasionally when she walked past, but she never actually said anything.

She must be occupied...

As for me, well, I landed a boyfriend too. Ezekiel finally asked me to be his girlfriend two weeks ago, and it felt like a scene straight out of a fairytale. He took me out for dinner and then led me to a secluded spot. That particular hill was the same one Ellie and I watched the sunrise from after the eventful bonfire engagement. However, instead of the sunrise, it was a starry night, and that's when he asked me.

But what caught me off guard was Ellie's expression when I told her about his confession. She looked disgusted, disappointed in me.

"Him...? Out of all the guys, you chose him?!"

"What's wrong with him?—You clearly know how much I like him!"

"He's older than you—might as well be your father!"

"It's only a year, El's!"

"That's... that's crazy! Thea, he's definitely using you for his own pleasure!"

"Ellie, for once in your life—just be happy for me!"

That's how the conversation ended. Her leaving our sleepover and leaving me all alone in the empty house. But of course, I wasn't really mad at Ellie. She held a grudge against him, as he wasn't particularly kind the first time they met.

However, that was my plan for today – to make up with her. That argument felt utterly ridiculous and completely pointless. Ellie tends to be incredibly stubborn, never taking the initiative to make amends.

Walking onto the basketball grounds, I notice all her teammates present, except well, her. Approaching them, I clear my throat to grab their attention.

Their heads lift up, registering a mix of confusion, and one of them asks, "Yes?"

"Sorry, but where's Ellie?"

Realization dawns on their faces, and one of them remarks, "Is this Ellie's girlfriend, Cat?" I swiftly shake my head.

"Ah, no. I'm her best friend." Their smiles widen.

"You single-?" A sudden loud door slam interrupts the conversation.

"Don't bother; she's taken."

My eyes widen as I watch Ellie drop her sports bag onto the bench, a cold look on her face. Her hair is messily down, and she's dressed in her sports uniform. She seems... pissed. Her glare feels too personal.

In an attempt to ease the tension, I offer her a bright smile, "El's, once you're done, let's visit the cafe!—"

"-I'm busy," she retorts, turning her back to me and tying her hair up.

Unfazed by her response, I persist, "I hear their coffee is really-"
"I hate coffee."

I scoff and grab her arm, prompting her to turn around, "Oh, c'mon, we're best friends; it was a stupid argument!"

Her cold demeanor falters, and she glances at her teammates watching attentively. She presses her lips together before replying, "Fine."

The corner of my lips curves up, a giggle escaping me as I plant a kiss on her cheek as a token of appreciation. She rolls her eyes, but I catch a glimpse of a hidden smile behind her palm.

Ellie returned in a black hoodie and baggy jeans, a clear sign that the chilly weather had caught her attention. Meanwhile, I was too naive to think about the weather and wore a denim skirt, a white tank top, and a red, thin cardigan today.

The cozy aroma of the cafe welcomed us as we settled in, each with a cup of hot chocolate.

The auburn haired girl hesitantly sat down with me, peeking at me from time to time.

"Spill," I said, crossing my ankles, casually swirling the whipped cream in my cup with a spoon.

Ellie, taken aback, looked at me with confusion. "What?"

I nonchalantly shrugged, avoiding direct eye contact, "You're tense, why's that?"

A sigh escaped Ellie's lips as she rubbed her eyes, "It's just... I don't like these places. They make me feel trapped."

Intrigued, I raised an eyebrow, "Trapped? Why?"

Ellie bit her lip, searching for the right words. "I prefer the outside, where I can see everything around me."

I nodded, "Then, wanna walk?"

She visibly relaxed, "I'd like that."

The chilly breeze accompanied our stroll through town as we continued sipping our hot chocolates.

Surprisingly, Ellie broke the silence, her gaze fixed on the stony path beneath our feet.

"I'm... I'm sorry for the way I acted," she mumbled, an unexpected apology lingering in the air.

I responded with a warm smile, attempting to ease the tension. "I get it. You didn't have the best first impression, and—"

She cut me off abruptly, "No, it's not because of that! I genuinely think he's not the right guy for you."

The sincerity in her voice caught me off guard. "Why would he not be...?" I inquired, my heart aching at the thought.

Ellie's hand gripped my arm, halting our steps. "Look at Cat and me; we fit each other perfectly."

Unable to meet her gaze, I whispered to myself, "How do you know if she's truly the right girl for you?"

Brows furrowed, Ellie leaned in, prompting me to pull away. "Huh, what'd you say?" she asked, but I avoided her.

"I asked, how many times are you going to keep scolding me for dating the boy I love?" My voice unintentionally rose, drawing attention from passersby.

Unperturbed, Ellie maintained her focus. "You can date him all you want; at least now we're even!"

Confused, I paused, taking a moment to comprehend her words. She scoffed at my delayed reaction. "We both hate each other's partners!"

Once the realization hit me, I huffed, crossing my arms.

"Well, isn't that just ironic..."

Ellie and I found ourselves at the park, escaping the watchful eyes of people. Seated side by side on a swing, I decided to break the awkward silence.

"You know, it felt unfair for me, knowing that my best friend is dating someone I strongly dislike," I confessed, my voice laced with a tinge of vulnerability.

Ellie stayed silent.

"I managed to get over it, eventually, or at least I hope I did," I added, chuckling, my words more of a quiet mumble.

A sigh escaped Ellie as she discarded her empty cup into the nearby garbage. "Now, it seems like I'm destined to endure the same treatment,"

In a playful gesture, I nudged her shoulder. "Seriously, why do you hate him?"

Her response was a nonchalant shrug, and she caught the hand that had nudged her, intertwining our fingers. "I don't know... he's annoying!"

Her warm palm wrapped around mine, "I just don't want him to hurt you." I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding, "I won't get hurt—"

"—How can you be so sure of that?" Ellie interjected, her grip on my fingers tightening.

The sudden shift in conversation left me momentarily stunned, unsure of how to respond. My gaze fell on Ellie's freckled cheeks as she redirected her attention to her shoes grazing the grass. Dejection washed over me, and I stared at the brooding clouds overhead, clicking my tongue with the silence that followed.

Ellie's unexpected giggle disrupted my thoughts.

"Huh... what?" I teased, playfully nudging her shoulders, secretly relishing the sound of her adorable giggles.

With a contented sigh, Ellie met my gaze, wearing a genuine smile. "Can I draw you?"
