"DO you have a girlfriend you never told me about?" are the words running through Maia's head as she tries to figure out what to say to Oscar in this moment. The blue bar flashing on her screen as she keeps stopping and going, stopping and deleting is mocking her, taunting her as she struggles to find the right words to say what's on her mind.
She had searched up the brand of his gift to the mystery woman, and the prices of the items weren't exactly cheap. The brand had offered tote bags at a price of $180, caps at $120. The jewelry and clothing of the brand were at even higher prices than those as well, meaning that whoever the girl was, it was clear Oscar did not mind spending more than necessary on her.
Who exactly would you spend that much money on besides a girlfriend?
Maia finally has it typed out, but it sounds too harsh, too uninviting for her to ask it in such a manner.

The fact that such an idea is weighing on her head probably says more about her than anything else; the idea that Oscar could be taken and is only doing this out of pity.
She's been thinking about that a lot recently; that Oscar may have reached out, done all of these nice things for her just so his conscious could be cleared. She doubts it could be true, but at the same time, who's to say that the 'quiet, nice guy' persona he had built for himself on the media was simply a facade and not who he truly was?
Why would he fly her back to America if he didn't care about her though? Why would he make such an effort to sustain their friendship if he didn't mean it?
It was all a bit much, she admits. Angela had said that there must have been some sort of regulations in place for who is allowed on the McLaren jet and who isn't, and Oscar wouldn't dare breach the rules just for her, right? Someone who, at the time, wasn't even 100% sure on how much she wanted to rebuild their friendship in the first place?

She backspaces on her question, and suddenly feels the need to throw her phone at the nearest wall.

Maia's eyes trail from her phone to her TV that is in front of her, and she tosses the phone onto a pillow next to her spot on the couch.
She's been watching some of Oscar's F2 highlights, seeing how good he has been at his job since day 1—because he was, and still is.
It's just like how she said he would be when they were kids, daydreaming about their futures while in each other's rooms and lying on each other's beds.
Oscar was on his way to being one of the greats, and a part of her feels more than gutted that he went on so unbothered and unfazed without her in his life. All while she was suffering because he was her closest friend, and she never realized she'd have to make room for others in her life because he wouldn't be around anymore.
Maia reaches for the remote and turns off the television with a small click!
Her ears are starting to hurt from hearing the sounds of car engines sputtering over and over again, and hearing Oscar hooting and hollering every time he had a good race.
Does he remember when she would cheer for him at his karting events? Screaming at the top of her lungs until her voice was shot the next morning because 'You're gonna beat everyone you meet, Osc! I'd bet on it too'?
She wipes her phone off the pillow and watches it fall onto the couch, and rests her head on the fabric as she stares at the blank screen.
Something in Maia's brain shouts it, too loud for her to miss and too loud for her to drown it out with thoughts about other things.
He didn't need you as much as you needed him.
She shuts her eyes, and tries to shake off the thought, but, as the sounds of RC cars zipping by on the road begin to mix with the sounds of Formula cars driving smoothly down straights, Maia finds it difficult to rest.
Oscar was so dreadfully, unfathomably overwhelming sometimes, and it made her feel like she was the stupidest person in the room.
