『the prologue is based after the events of this book』
some people say we were destined for this. for the revolution , for the games , the grief. i say fuck that. all we were destined for was psychopathic capitol representatives trying to dictate our lives , and our deaths. and , for what ? it's pathetic. all we are to them is cheap entertainment. even the districts , the families of the tributes can't tear their eyes away. no matter what you think of the games , you always find yourself watching.
the games turn you into a monster. i was a little girl , forced to murder. i was only 16 years old. i shouldn't have seen anyone die , let alone 23 children who were just trying to survive. we wanted to keep our own lives , so we had no sympathy to anyone else's. all the tributes are in the same boat. all the tributes are desperately trying to push each other off said boat.
no one wins the games. there are no winners , only survivors. even after coming out of the games , your every move is carefully watched. you have to put up with this act , this charade , for the rest of your life. if i'm supposed to be a winner , why do i feel like i've lost everything ?
my name is sloane rivera-ridley , and i am a survivor of the hunger games. a survivor of the loss , the pain , the change. some people think i'm lucky. lucky ? i had to watch 23 others be killed. hell , i had to kill some of them. i have to live with that , live with how i took their lives , to keep my own. it follows you through the rest of your life. us victors aren't lucky. we're cursed. i wish i did die in the games. at least i would've died with some of my innocence left intact.
