The mouse and the dog had arrived at the high school where Mindy was. It was dark and it had looked like how any other school would look like in an apocalypse. Buttons called out,
"Mindy?? Mindy, where are you!! Can you hear me??"
"Shh! Be quiet, Buttons!" said Brain, trying to avoid him and Buttons being caught.
"But we need to find her!"
"And we will find her, but you'll need to shut up first! This entire school could be crawling with those singing...things! Your yelling could get both of us killed. And then who's going to save Mindy?"
Feeling bad, Buttons quieted down and said,
"Ok, you're right, Brain. Sorry. It's just...she's all I have..."
"I know...just try and remain calm while you follow me"
As the pair slowly crept through the hallway trying to find the choir room, Buttons began to whimper. He said,
"You know...Mindy's a good kid...she's smart...she's kind to animals...and I respect her choices...but...if we're being honest...I really don't like Cindy...she's not that funny and as someone who's part toon, I feel like Mindy can do so much better..."
Brain put his hand on Buttons' paw and said,
"Yeah...I know"
But then Buttons continued with,
"But this morning, like the dumb dog I was, I told Mindy,
'Why don't you try dating someone in your own high school in Concord?'
And Mindy responded with,
'You just don't like Cindy, don't you?'
I...I couldn't just lie to her, that wouldn't make me a good dog! So I told her,
'Why not try dating someone like Elmyra Duff?'
And she said,
'No way! Elmyra is an annoying pain!!'
And I said,
'One, I said to date someone LIKE her, and two, that's not a nice thing to say!'"
As Brain tried to get Buttons to calm down again, the dog continued with,
"Next thing you know, I'm defending Elmyra out of all people! And she says,
'You just want Elmyra to be your daughter!!'
And I said,
'Well at least she treats me like a good dog!'"
As Buttons and Brain entered the choir room, Buttons had a horrible realization.
"That...that must've been why Mindy got off the bus to go see Cindy..." he said.
Feeling absolutely guilty and whimpering more than ever, he continued with,
"Oh no, Brain...I'm the reason they trapped her...it's all my fault..."
Brain put his hand on Buttons' paw and said,
"No. It isn't. Listen to me, Buttons. This is not your fault"
Suddenly, from behind the dog and mouse, a teenage girl voice said,
"Yes it is"
Buttons and Brain turned around and to their shock and horror, that voice belonged to Mindy. She was now appotheosized, complete with her eyes glowing bright blue.
"Mindy??" replied Buttons.
"It's ALL your fault. At least that's what I thought before they broke down the door"
And then, Mindy began singing,
"I'm not your girl anymore...
I'm not that tween that you came here for...
I'm not your girl anymore...
I overtook her body with an infectious spore"
Buttons slowly walked up to her as she continued singing,
"You left me out of your sight for one second and look
What happens, nightmare time!"
"Mindy..." said Buttons before being interrupted with Mindy singing,
"It's worse than you could imagine
Not getting wounded
Just alien invading minds!"
She then began dancing and pointing to Buttons as she sang,
"No more fetch or playtime together
'Cuz your only girl is under the weather!
And if you actually paid attention to me..."
Buttons was shocked from this because he ALWAYS paid attention to her and the one time where he didn't, she ended up like this. As he felt the weight of this situation, Mindy sang,
"You'd see I'm not your seed!"
Buttons said,
"Mindy, what's going on?"
"I'm not your cutesy teen!"
"Don't worry, I'm here to take you home!
"No matter what you believe,
The apple's fallen far from the tree!"
Mindy fell on her knees dramatically and then sang,
"It's not my fault anymore...
No more curfews to be late for...
It's not my fault anymore...
No more being worried and waiting by the door..."
She then got up and pointed at Buttons while singing,
"Did you know I wanted you to live with me?"
And suddenly, from behind Mindy, Cindy and another teenager named Cora, who were also apotheosized, joined in with,
"Look what happens, nightmare time!"
The three girls, with Mindy leading, then sang,
"Yet mom and dad decided to let you be...
(Aliens invading minds!)"
As Mindy and the other girls danced, she sang,
"Did you know Cindy let me sleep over?
And you're right about her, her jokes are a groaner!"
Buttons shouted,
"What?? I knew it!"
"And if you wondered what led sweet Mindy away?
Well the doggy wasn't here to stay!"
Mindy, Cindy, and Cora then sang,
"Not your seed!"
"Listen, Mindy, whatever I said before-" said Buttons, trying to talk to Mindy
"I'm not your perfect teen!" they continued to sing.
"I know you're in there Mindy, break out of this!!"
"I'm freaking seventeen! At least I was before you left me..."
Suddenly, a soft spotlight shined on Mindy as Cindy and Cora backed away for her soft spoken ballad. She sat down on the floor with her head down.
Brain tried to grab one of Buttons' paws and he said,
"Come on, Buttons. We need to leave now!"
"No way, Brain! We're not leaving without Mindy!!" he growled at Brain.
"That is not Mindy, Buttons!"
Buttons slowly walked up to her and laid down by her side while saying,
"Mindy...?"
Mindy then softly sang,
"Why does it hurt to love you...?
Why do I have a frown...?
Why does it hurt to know you...?
You finally let me down...
Isn't a dog supposed to protect his owner when she needs him most?"
Hearing that question made Buttons the most guilty he had ever been. To him, this was the worst thing he had ever done. As he reflected his sin, Mindy then finished her solo with,
"Why does it hurt to love you...?
Why does it hurt to love...?"
Suddenly, the beat picked back up, prompting Mindy to stand up as Cindy and Cora rejoined her. Buttons slowly stood up as well and due to his weighing guilt and shock, all he could do was look at Mindy as the three girls sang,
"I'm not your seed!
(Not your girl! Not your girl!)
Now maybe you'll listen to me!
(Listen to me! Listen to me!)
After you let me sing
(Let me sing! Let me sing!)
Now your owner's not a girl no more!
(Girl no more, girl no more!)
Not at all your seed!!"
Mindy then pointed to Buttons one more time as she finished singing,
"'Cuz I'm not your girl anymore..."
At this point, Buttons was absolutely heartbroken seeing that the Mindy that he knew and loved for many years is gone and he was too late to save her.
"I can't do it, Brain..." he whimpered.
"I can't live in a world without Mindy..."
Buttons then began hyperventilating, prompting Brain to ask,
"Buttons? Take a deep breath and pull yourself together"
"I can't process that I'm the reason they got her...Mindy's mom was right...I'm a bad dog...!!"
The dog suddenly threw the gun off of his back, where it landed on the floor. He was barking and howling out of sadness and Brain was doing his best to calm him down.
"Buttons! Get a hold of yourself!" he shouted.
"I'm a bad dog!! I'm not a good dog at all!!" he replied, not being able to fully hear Brain over his racing heartbeat.
"Snap out of it!!"
Brain slapped Buttons, causing him to stop hyperventilating and regain his full hearing. He took a deep breath, but was still whimpering a little. Brain put his hand on Buttons' paw and gave him a small but reassuring smile. But unbeknownst to the dog and mouse, Mindy was preparing a trick up her sleeve by slowly creeping up to Buttons.
"Buttons" he began with.
"You're one of the best coworkers I've ever had the honor to act with. I'm not gonna let you die"
Unfortunately, after he said that, Mindy swooped in with a strong kick to Buttons' stomach. With a yipe, that kick immediately knocked Buttons out unconscious. Brain was shocked from this and even though he would've tried to save the dog from that kick, he knew he couldn't do it due to how small he was. He ran over to him and shouted,
"Buttons!! Oh god, Buttons!!"
To the dismay of Brain, Buttons couldn't be awoken due to his life getting kicked out of him as well. Mindy then picked up the gun and pointed it at Brain. In a creepy unison, Mindy, Cindy, and Cora said,
"We just keep running into each other, don't we Brain?"
He stood beside Buttons' lifeless body as the girls continued with,
"We have travelled across seas of stars, counting/conquering/bending..."
The girls were taken aback from not saying the same thing at the same time like a proper hive mind, so they tried again.
"Bending/counting/conquering..."
They huddled to themselves and said,
"Wait, what are we saying? We all have to say the same thing! Let's get back on the same page!"
They then sang a brief harmony together before resuming their speech to Brain. They said,
"Bending countless civilizations to our will, yet you, Brain, have defied us thrice!"
Mindy tried shooting Brain, but he quickly dodged the bullet and ran behind them in in fear. The girls then said,
"This puny earthly weapon is too easy of a death for you, Brain!"
Mindy tossed aside the gun and she, Cindy, and Cora then turned around and began creeping towards Brain.
"We shall rip you from limb to limb!" they creepily said at the same time.
"You shall shut/die/choke..."
Once again, they had said different things rather than the same thing and they tried again with,
"You shall die/choke/shut..."
The three girls then argued with each other with,
"Are you kidding me?? We're all supposed to say the same thing! You guys are embarrassing me!!"
Brain took this argument as an opportunity to try and escape.
"I'm out of here!!" he shouted before being cornered by the three girls. They then said,
"You shall choke on your agony as you beg for the apotheosis!!"
Suddenly, the girls began preparing to attack Brain as he screamed for his life.
But out of nowhere, a tall beautiful woman with blonde hair, dressed like a military soldier, bursted into the choir room and shouted,
"Get down to the ground! We're the army!!"
She, along with other military soldiers, pointed her gun at Mindy, Cindy, and Cora, causing the teenage girls to gobble like turkeys and run out of the choir room, never to be seen again. She ran all around the room checking for anymore infected people. She said,
"Ok! We're all clear on the left and all clear on the right! Prepare the grenade for this school!"
"Yes ma'am!" shouted a soldier as he got out a grenade.
Brain quickly got up and said,
"No, you're mistaken! I'm not one of them! I'm an ordinary-"
But before he could finish his sentence, the woman knocked him out with the end of her gun and began carrying him away from the school as she said,
"Prove it, mouse. We're the army"
