"Good morning class! I know you're all excited for your first day of school, but please try to settle down,"

As you stood in front of the whiteboard, Alhaitham grimaced. You were going to be his teacher?! If he knew that he wouldn't have been so complacent about coming to school.

"I'm Mr. (Y/n), and I'll be your home room teacher for the year,"

Your nephew let out a silent sigh of relief knowing he wouldn't have to be with you the whole day. Besides, what subject would you even teach?! Maybe he'd know if you'd ever been around long enough to talk about yourself.

You took attendance and explained the basic structure of their school day to them. First they'd have you to take attendance and catch them up on any school events, then they'd have different teachers come in to teach them their different subjects.

The school bell rung, and you quietly left the room, another teacher entering soon after.

After another half hour, Alhaitham was practically falling asleep from boredom. It wasn't that the subject wasn't interesting, it was just that he'd already learned everything his grade level offered to teach about it.

The only reason he actually didn't fall asleep was because he didn't want to get in trouble and have his grandma worry about him.

He also wasn't a fan of the people in his class either. Everyone was so loud and disruptive, he was surprised they made it out of preschool!

He managed to survive until lunch, finding a solitary spot underneath a tree to eat the lunch his grandmother prepared for him.

" Make sure to eat it all to grow up big and strong!

- Love, Grandma "

He smiled to himself as he read the note, and proceeded to frown as he noticed another note.

" If you need somewhere to eat, my office is open! Good luck on your first day!

- Uncle (y/n) "

As if he'd eat with you!

Slightly annoyed, he hurriedly finished his lunch, wanting to put his full focus on the book he'd brought from home.

Eventually the lunch person had ended, and he reluctantly returned to class.

After a few more boring hours, a bell signifying the boy's freedom from his boredom rang, and he made his way to the front of the school to prepare to head home.

The only problem was that he had no idea where to go.

He probably should've paid more attention to the path he took when with his grandmother when they both arrived there in the morning, but he'd gotten too distracted by his own annoyance.

Rather than standing somewhere like a loser, Alhaitham decided to walk through the school halls, eventually finding you packing up your suitcase.

Noticing the boy peeking at you from the door, you waved him over,
"Haitham? School ended ten minutes ago, what're you still doing here?"

He said nothing, too embarrassed to reveal that-

"You don't know how to go home, do you?"

His face flushed red with embarrassment as he nodded.

You chuckled, pulling your phone out from your pocket,
"I'll have mom- well, your grandma come pick you up. I've got to stay a bit longer, I run the afterschool daycare program in the library,"

His head perked up upon hearing that last word.

"Library?"
He asked, his face blank yet with eyes that shone with curiosity.

You held back on pressing the call button,
"Have you not been there yet?"

He shook his head.

You put your phone in your pocket and put a hand on his shoulder,
"Let's go together then, I have feeling you'd like it,"

•••

"Here we are! I'll let you explore for yourself, if you need me, I'll be in the open area,"
You gave him a few pats on the back before departing from him, letting him fully take in what he was seeing.

This was the biggest library he'd ever seen! Tall shelves lined the walls with old leather spines, tall windows that let in beams of natural light, and a myriad of different types of chairs for anyone to enjoy.

This place was amazing!

He grabbed a book out of one of the shelves, reading over the title,
"What we owe to each other by Kant..."

Seemed interesting enough!

As much as he wanted to get started on his reading journey though, he was a bit curious about that daycare program you said you ran.

He hid behind a bookshelf, peering between the empty spaces between the books to see you sitting on a chair surrounded by children of various ages.

"What a lovely drawing Kaveh! You've got a real knack for art,"
Alhaitham watched as you pat the blonde boy's head, which seemed to make him very happy.

This Kaveh person seemed to be one or two years older than Alhaitham.

As the boy turned around, Alhaitham got a good look at his face, and for the first time in his short life, he felt his heart skip a beat.

This was much too dangerous, time to retreat!

Alhaitham ended up hiding in a secluded area of the library for the next two hours until everyone had gone home, and you luckily managed to find him.

"Alright bud, time to head home,"

He sighed disappointedly, closing his book and heading towards the shelf he'd gotten it from.

"If you really like it, we can check it out. You have a library card?"

He shook his head.

"That's alright, I can put it under my name for now,"

He watched you step behind the librarians desk, turning on one of the computers and typing something with the keyboard. You scanned the book's barcode, and then your key card, and typed a for a bit more before shutting the computer back down.

"Here you go! It's due in two weeks,"
You handed the book to him, and although he didn't show it, he was quite grateful for this.

On the walk home, you decided to probe him about his day.

"How was school?"

He replied quickly,
"Fine,"

You rolled your eyes,
"You don't need to lie to me, Haitham,"

He stopped dead in his tracks. How did you figure it out?!

You crouched down in front of him to be eye-level,
"Be honest with me now, okay?"

He thought about his words for a moment before answering you.
"It's boring. I already know everything and everyone's loud,"

You couldn't help but laugh at his bluntness, ruffling his hair (much to his annoyance) and standing back up.

"I shouldn't have expected less from my nephew. You really think you know everything?"

He nodded seriously.

You put a finger on your chin while you thought,
"If you're really that bored then, I could try to put you into the accelerated program. But I've got the warm you, the kids will probably be a little older than you,"

"I think I can handle it,"
He responded with determination.

You smiled, beginning to walk again,
"I'll get the paperwork started after dinner then,"
