As the sun gradually dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with a beautiful orange and pink hue, Diya gently took Caleb and led him out of the house, into the cool embrace of the evening breeze. The sky was now a deep shade of blue, and the stars were starting to twinkle above them, casting a serene glow over the world below. The sound of crickets filled the air, their rhythmic chirping providing a soothing background noise as Caleb made his way to his destination, walking with a sense of purpose and anticipation.
Diya thought she had secured her charming Victorian house, but it seems like she forgot to account for a notorious cupcake thief named Tabitha. When Diya walked into the kitchen, she found Tabitha munching on the cupcakes she had brought from home. Looks like Tabitha was craving something sweet and Diya's cupcakes were just too tempting for her to resist! Next time, Diya might want to consider installing a cupcake safe to keep her treats secure.
Diya couldn't decide whether to be amused or annoyed, but she managed to crack a smile and said, "Well, I guess I can add 'changing locks' to my to-do list now."
Curiously looking around the kitchen, Diya asked Tabitha, "Where's Brianne?"
"Well, it looks like Brianne has mastered the art of vanishing like a magician! Poof! And she's gone!" Tabitha teased Brianne's sudden departure.
Diya and Tabitha were having a great time, laughing and chatting the entire night before they finally went to bed. Tabitha didn't feel comfortable alone in the large house, so she slept in Diya's room. She felt the dark hallways echo with every step she took, and the flickering candles cast eerie shadows on the aged walls.
"Listen closely, can you hear it? The whispers coming from the walls! It's as if they have a secret to share with us. Let's lean in and find out what they have to say!" Tabitha placed her hand against the wall and whispered to Diya.
"Hey Tabi, no need to add to the spookiness of this place. I'm already sleeping with one eye open!" Diya exclaimed as she got ready for bed. "I mean, I don't want to lose my beauty sleep and wake up looking like a zombie, you know?"
Tabitha giggled, her eyes sparkling in the soft glow of the moonlight creeping through the window. "Oh, come on, Diya. It's just an old house, filled with stories of the past. I don't think the whispers are anything sinister. In fact, I think they might have something fascinating to say."
Diya, still sceptical, reluctantly inched closer to the wall. As she leaned in, her ear pressed against the cool surface, she began to hear an indistinct murmur. It started as a soft, distant hum, then gradually grew louder and clearer.
"Can you make out what they're saying?" Tabitha whispered, her enthusiasm barely contained.
"I think so," Diya replied, straining to decipher the words. "They're talking about a hidden treasure buried somewhere on this property. Listen! 'Under the mighty oak tree, where moonlight casts its softest glow, lies a secret waiting to be unveiled."
Tabitha's eyes widened with excitement. "A secret treasure? How amazing would that be! We could be part of an adventure, Diya!"
Diya chuckled, knowing Tabitha for wild ideas. "Oh, Tabitha, you and your treasure-hunting fantasies. But who knows? Maybe there actually is something hidden here."
Diya had her hands full as she tried to be quiet and not wake up Tabitha. She noticed that Tabitha had dozed off while streaming her favourite Netflix series on her tablet. So, she carefully closed the tablet and placed it on the nightstand next to her. As she tried to turn off the lights, she accidentally kicked her bag, which was lying on the floor. Suppressing a scream of pain, she picked up her bag and discovered Emily's diary inside. "Well, isn't this just my luck," Diya thought. "First, I nearly woke up Tabitha, and I found a secret diary. What's next? A ghost in the closet?"
Diya couldn't resist the temptation of opening a mysterious diary despite knowing that it was not her personal property. She was hoping to find some interesting secrets in it, maybe some juicy gossip or a treasure map. But alas! The diary was as empty as her bank account at the end of the month. She felt disappointed and thought of telling Caleb about it, but then she realized that it was not worth the effort. After all, Caleb had enough of his own problems to deal with, like trying to figure out how to cook without setting the kitchen on fire.
Diya felt a surge of disappointment as she carefully placed her grandmother's diary back in her bag and pushed it under the bed. The mansion was like nothing she had ever seen before, with its towering columns, sprawling gardens, and ornate architecture. As she sat there, lost in thought, she couldn't help but wonder why Emily Brown, whom she had never met, had entrusted her with such a grand and precious estate.
Diya was aware of her grandmother's existence, but her mother had never spoken much about her. Emily Brown was a mysterious figure to Diya, and she had no idea what her grandmother was like, as her mother had kept her memories to herself. Although Diya was currently residing in the same mansion where her mother had shared memories of Emily Brown, she had never thought of inquiring about her grandmother's life and personality.
As she switched off the lights and went to bed, Diya mumbled to herself, "Maybe I should call my mom tomorrow and ask her about grandmother."
Diya was completely unaware that her grandmother, Emily Brown, had passed on her grand mansion to her because she had a strong belief that only Diya could lift the curse on the property and uncover the truth behind it. She had complete faith in her granddaughter's ability to liberate the mansion and her own spirit from the spell and was optimistic that Diya would not give up until she achieved her goal.
