CHRIS SITS ACROSS valeria in a dunkin' donuts booth. it's 4pm and they ended school not too long ago, both in the mood for an oreo milkshake. so here they are, in a dunkin' donuts booth, both sipping on separate oreo milkshakes. they would never do that romantic 'sharing one drink with two straws' shit because they're both fatasses who need their own drink.
"do you like enzo?" valeria randomly asks, catching chris off guard at the unexpected question.
"uh," chris gathers himself, acting as if he didn't almost just choke on a big chunk of oreo. "why wouldn't i?" his eyebrows stitch together. enzo is a cool guy who's definitely a lot different than what chris envisioned.
"well.. you know! he's my ex and you're my boyfriend, —it's understandable if you don't like him." valeria tells him. they haven't really had this type of conversation yet, especially not with enzo as the main focus.
he smiles uncontrollably at the hearing of valeria's words. he loves that he could finally be referred to as her boyfriend again. "val, you're thinking too much into this." he chuckles dryly, knowing valeria has a problem with overthinking everything so she doesn't disappoint anyone. "enzo's a great guy who treated you right when i obviously didn't." chris refers to their three month long hate period and how enzo took care of her for him.
"i don't want you to feel obligated to like him because me and him are still friends." valeria softly bites the tip of her straw.
"trust me, enzo is my dawg now."
valeria chuckles, "okay—"
"valeria?"
her eyes stay on chris' lips, realizing that they haven't moved when her name was mentioned, instead the sound of a voice coming from behind her. she whips her head around because who the fuck could that be? she's caught off guard by the sight of yarina holding a box of donuts in her hands.
"yarina?" she furrows her eyebrows, standing up and giving her a hug because she wasn't expecting to run into her.
"i knew it was you!" yarina laughs, surprised that she easily identified valeria by the sight of the back of her head. they eventually pull away from the hug and valeria sits down.
"do you wanna sit?" valeria asks.
"i'm actually getting these for my little sisters birthday party so i wasn't planning on staying long." yarina shares, valeria nodding her head as chris sits there awkwardly. he never talked to this yarina girl a day in his life.
"well, it was nice bumping into you!" valeria smiles. yarina is one of those girls you aren't really close with but trust with your life.
"you too, see you at school!" yarina tells her with a smile, rubbing her shoulder momentarily before diverting her eyes to the other person at the table, trying to include them too. "bye —chris..?" she raises her eyebrows.
chris grows offended at the girls tone, but decides not to say anything because this is one of his girls friend. "bye."
"wait," yarina looks back at valeria, "you two are..?"
valeria smiles, finishing the sentence for her, "yeah, we're best friends again."
chris' face falters.
best friends?
they're way more than best friends. is she embarrassed of him? ashamed? is that why she's introducing him as her friend? a literal friend?
they aren't best friends, they're dating! why is valeria not saying that to this 'yarina' girl? who names their kid a dumb fucking name like yarina anyway?
yarina gives valeria one last hug before walking out of dunkin' donuts, valeria instantly trying to carry on their last conversation as if she didn't just break chris' heart into pieces.
"they're planning to throw a party for enzo since his birthday is on the 12th." valeria says, referring to the fact that enzo's birthday is on april 12th, which is six days away.
chris doesn't say anything, not even being able to look at her after what she just said. they are not best friends. he can't open his mouth without the ping shooting through his heart a million times over again.
valeria furrows her eyebrows, noticing his quick mood change. "are you okay?" she asks, placing her finger on his chin and lifting up his head so she could read his facial expression better.
"can we go?" he says, more of a demand than a question because of the way he gets up and picks up his milkshake, throwing it in the trash because it's practically empty and walking out.
valeria catches up to him, ignoring the way he doesn't even hold the door for her. "does your stomach hurt or something?" she asks.
"yeah," chris speaks blankly, keeping his eyes ahead of him instead of making eye contact like he always does.
valeria presses her lips together awkwardly, trying to keep up with his ridiculously quick walking pace. did she do something?
even when his stomach hurts, he always tries to make her laugh, sometimes he even wants her to make him laugh so he could forget about his stomachache.
but now he's silent. completely silent.
he doesn't say a word on the way back to their houses, even splitting up from valeria instead of walking her home like he always does.
valeria frowns, not even receiving a bye as the boy walks out of her sight.
