Only two left. Treech just had to get through Lucy Gray and Reaper. He could do it, right?

He had to. He had to come back to Vera.

Still, Vera was nervous seeing as none of the tributes seemed to be making a move. Treech was still sitting on the scoreboard across from Reaper, who currently was staring at the wall. And Lucy Gray was crouched down in the arena by a puddle.

But the look of fear and determination in their eyes made it clear that they were all planning their attacks. Treech needed to be careful.

But of course, he was the first to move. Sneaking his way down from the scoreboard and behind a barrier without making a noise.  He's going for Lucy Gray. Vera bit her lip anxiously as she waited for Treech to make his move, desperately hoping that he had the ability to overpower her.

After a few moments of silence, Treech finally made his move, sprinting toward an alarmed Lucy Gray. She tried desperately to escape and hide, but Treech was much faster, grabbing onto her arm to stop her.

But Lucy Gray was smart. She was not going to let Treech win this. So, she threw herself on the ground, forcing Treech to stumble and fall with her. Quickly the boy tried to put his hand out to soften his fall, causing his grip on the axe to loosen.

Lucy Gray then took the opportunity to reach for the axe, but Treech refused to give it up. Still, Lucy Gray continued to try, knocking the axe out of his hand and sending it flying toward the corner of the arena.

The two exchanged a shocked look before crawling toward the axe, only stopping when they noticed the way the snake trailed around it. Quickly, they both jumped out of the way as the snake lunged for them.

Treech stared at the snake in shock as he tried to think of a plan. But nothing seemed to be coming to mind. Lucy Gray also seemed quite panicked, looking between the snake and the axe as she breathed heavily.

Come on, Treech. Think of something. Please.

Back in Heavensbee Hall, Vera was beginning to panic, getting closer and closer to the screen as she pleaded with Treech to figure something out. The entire hall had grown quiet as they watched the fight, silently picking who they wanted to win.

But Vera needed it to be Treech.

Lucy Gray however seemed to have other plans, taking a leap of faith as she quickly picked up the snake and threw it at Treech with her eyes closed. Treech's eyes widened in fear as he flailed around, trying to grab the snake as it slithered up to his neck.

"No. No. No. No," Treech yelled out as he finally grabbed onto the snake. He was too late. The snake had bitten him. Lucy Gray watched with tears in her eyes as Treech began to sob, beating the snake into the ground with his fist as his body began to give out.

"I needed to get back to her. This can't be the end," Treech muttered as he clutched the dead snake in his hands, laying his head in the sand as he let his body shake.

"I'm so sorry," Lucy Gray whispered as she watched over the boy. Treech looked up at her with a look of betrayal.

"I promised her."

And then, Treech went limp, laying in the sand as he succumbed to the venom.

-

"No. This can't be happening," Vera muttered as she stared up at the screen, tears brimming in her eyes at Treech's body.

He was gone. Even after everything, she still couldn't save him. After everything, she still lost to Coriolanus.

"Vera," Festus called out as he tried to approach the girl, but Vera only brushed him off.

"It's not real. It can't be real," Vera muttered, shaking her head as she tried her best to deny the truth.

"I'm so sorry, Vera-" Clemensia tried to say as she walked over, but Vera refused to listen. Even Coriolanus seemed to be growing concerned as the three watched Vera worriedly.

"I can't do this," Vera muttered as she backed away from the screen, before rushing toward the door, ignoring the calls of her name.

As soon as Vera reached the empty hallway, she felt her body give out, sliding against the wall as she let the tears run down her face.

This wasn't supposed to happen. He was supposed to come home to her. They were supposed to get their happy ending.

"He was never going to make it out alive, you know," a menacing voice suddenly spoke, causing Vera to look up, "That boy of yours."

Dr. Gaul.

Suddenly, Vera felt all the sadness turn to anger as she stared up at the evil woman.

"YOU MONSTEROUS BITCH!" Vera yelled as she stood up, shaking with rage. Dr. Gaul only laughed, finding enjoyment in Vera's pain.

"A monster? No, I'm not a monster. It's those nasty rebels that are monsters. So I made your boy pay for it," Dr. Gaul taunted as she approached Vera, clearly amused by the girl's anger.

"These will be your last games. I'll make sure of it," Vera spat back. She needed to stop these games for Treech. Dr. Gaul only let out an amused chuckle, clapping her hands together.

"Oh little Phoenix, these games aren't ending. You see, thanks to that friend of yours, Coriolanus Snow, these games are going to continue for a long time. But do try to stop me. I quite enjoy a challenge," Dr. Gaul announced with a sinister grin before walking into the auditorium, leaving Vera alone again.

Vera only grew angrier at the mention of Coriolanus. No matter where she turned, he was always there making things worse for her. He was always winning. She needed to stop him.

For Treech.
