Ansel is quiet and observant. He's always watching and taking mental notes of things. He's very timid and obedient when the doctor is present but amongst his little pack he takes control, by force even if he has to. He's not afraid to beat them up or fight to maintain his position. A little bit of his old self comes through in that he likes to boss them around. When the doctor isn't present he's always trying to find a way to escape. He still clings to a little last shred of hope that he has.
His old self was never this way. He was always speaking his mind and giving orders. Maybe a little dramatic but he always meant well. The experiments and years of confinement and war changed him though. Really the only person he still cares about is his friend Max. Max is the only one he doesn't act hostile towards.

Max got the short end of the stick and got it worse than Ansel.
There's also the doctor, but he's not really a friend but I'm putting him here.
His real name is Vladimir Makarovich and he was a Soviet scientist. He fled after what he precieved as a plot to mürder him. He's not sane.

Ansel and his unit were left stranded after a battle which wiped most of them out. Only he and a handful of others survived in the Russian wilderness for a while till they came upon what they thought was a kind old man willing to help them.
The man, the doctor, wasn't as kind as they thought because he kept the men drüged and began to use them to further his experiments. He kept them locked up in a barn with the many other failed experiments he had performed on other soldiers and helpless victims like them.
He hit a breakthrough with Ansel in particular, as the others up until then never retained their human consciousness. This made Ansel sort of in charge of the others, who all are more animal than man. Ansel became the doctor's henchman and accomplice out of fear of something worse happening to him.

1.
You lived in a local village. The local doctor, not really local, he loved miles away but he was the only doctor around, offered you a job assisting him. Now you have no medical knowledge but he said that was fine, your job was more maintaining the property.
You arrive outside the doc's cabin when you see a barn...there's weird noises coming from inside and it's padlocked shut...you hear what sounds like whimpering and see a hand reach out from the crack under the door, almost a plee for help...what is going on here? What do you do...
