Chapter 171: He Changming is Here

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

How could a person, who proposed marriage because of a sewing machine, come from a good family? Su Wen could not, in good conscience, entrust her sister to such a family. While she felt this way, Su Wen recognized Su Qing was an adult. Even if she was the eldest and had absolute authority in the family, she did not want to interfere too much in Su Qing’s marital affairs. Su Wen did not want to sour their relationship in that way.

‘We’ll take things one step at a time,’ she thought.

Wang Chunyan eventually left, allowing Su Wen to clean up the house. She put the sewing machine in Su Qing’s room; it would double as a temporary studio when the time was ripe.

After the fight, Su Qing and Su Xiu were a mess; their arms were scratched, and their hair stuck out at odd angles. Su Wen prepared water for them to wash their faces and clean themselves. Then, she used a purple-colored disinfectant to clean their wounds.

Though it was painful, the two girls braved through the pain and did not cry out.

Su Wen felt nothing but deep respect for her sisters. Su Qing and Su Xiu were introverts at heart, but they still stood up for Little Sister Su and fought bravely on her behalf. It showed their tenacity and willingness to endure hardships.

These were traits all the Su sisters possessed.

Su Xue, Fifth Sister, and even Little Sister Su were equally tough and hardworking. No matter how much pain they were in, they would not cry out.

Su Wen’s heart ached. She sent her three sisters back to their rooms to rest.

Tonight would be a rest day to recuperate from all they had had to go through. While her sisters took a break, Su Wen decided to cook a delicious plate of sweet and sour pork. It would be her treat to them for doing so well.

He Yulan swiftly returned home now that the show at Su Wen’s place was over. As soon as she entered the house, she realized the atmosphere was not quite right. Her husband was seated and kept winking at her.

He Yulan was confused. She had not caused any trouble and even did her best to help, so why was he looking at her so nervously?

“Yulan.”

A familiar voice, no doubt a man, sounded from behind. He Yulan stiffened in shock. It was He Changming. He had probably been waiting for her for some time, yet she had not noticed!

“B-big Brother, what are you doing here? C-come in and have a seat. I’ll prepare some tea.”

He Yulan’s husband had kept his brother-in-law company in his wife’s absence. Walking past his wife, he whispered, “Your brother has been here for a while. He has had that dark look since earlier. I invited him to sit down, but he declined; he didn’t even drink the tea I made. Mother came by just now, but she was scared away by him.”

He Changming stood in the courtyard, his expression overcast. He suddenly began pacing back and forth, causing the whole family to be on edge. They had tried to be friendly, treating He Changming as they would a guest, but the latter took no notice of their efforts and continued pacing restlessly. With communication failing, everyone tried to make themselves look busy while waiting for He Yulan to return.

Meanwhile, as He Yulan’s husband, he had nowhere to hide. He could only grit his teeth and accompany his brother-in-law since He Changming even refused to go with him to look for his wife.

Now that He Yulan was back, he sighed in relief.

“I need to work the fields. You can wait on your brother and see what he wants.” Before He Yulan could respond, her husband was out the door. He did not look back.

It was obvious he had fled.

“What’s wrong? Are you going to hide too?” He Changming strode towards his sister with an icy look.

“D-don’t be silly! Why would I do that?” He Yulan knew she was lying through her teeth, so she did not dare meet her brother’s eyes.

She had already done her best to match her brother with Su Xiu, but she wanted nothing to do with marriage unless she could find a live-in son-in-law like her older sister. How could she play matchmaker for her brother in such a situation?! Her parents would skin her alive if she suggested it to him!

He Changming took a seat, his expression unchanging. “Have you been to Su

Xiu’s place?”

“Yes, yes!” He Yulan nodded repeatedly.

“How did it go? I saw a crowd outside the house when I stepped into the village. What was that commotion about?” He Changming spoke gloomily, each word seemingly a knife to his throat. Had it not been for his fear of affecting his chances with Su Xiu, he would have rushed up to find out what was happening. He would not have spent time waiting at his brother-in-law’s place.

Never had He Changming ever felt so much like a coward as he did then..

Chapter 172: It Won ‘t Work

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

He Yulan knew her brother did not take losses well. “Don’t worry,” she said,

“Nothing happened to Su Xiu.”

He Changming’s expression took a turn for the worse. “It’s as good as a loss if nothing happened!”

“Big brother…” He Yulan could not take it anymore and wailed, “You can’t say something like that! She’s not your wife yet, so why are you always taking her side?”

“She’ll be mine; it’s only a matter of time.” Since he had set his sights on her, naturally, he would marry her in time.

He Yulan made a face, careful not to let her brother see it.

“That’s not true. Plenty of women in the village like you, but that doesn’t mean they’re all going to become your wife. You’re the best hunter in the village; it’s a shame our Trinity village does not rely on hunting for our food.”

Yulan, would you like to say that again? I think you’re itching for a beating!” He Changming did not care if other women took a fancy to him; only Su Xiu mattered in his eyes.

“I’m sorry; I’m sorry. I won’t say it again.” He Yulan knew that she had struck a nerve. Not wanting to press her luck, she changed the topic. “By the way, what are you doing here, Big Brother? Aren’t you busy?”

“Of course, I’m busy. But didn’t you send someone to inform me that your future sister-in-law got beaten up?” He Changming could barely suppress his anger as the words left his lips.

When news arrived at Black Eagle village, he had been hunting in the mountains with a few others. He immediately rushed over upon learning what had happened. That’s how he found himself at his sister’s place.

Future sister-in-law… I’m afraid it won’t work.” He Yulan scratched her head in distress. “Su Xiu told me that she won’t marry out of the family; instead, she’s hoping to find a live-in husband.” He Yulan eyed her older brother curiously. She still could not see why he fancied Su Xiu so much.

That was not to say she disliked Su Xiu. He Yulan felt her older brother had good taste, and she liked Su Xiu’s personality. If Su Xiu really became her sister-in-law, she would not need to worry about not getting along with her. It was just that Su Xiu was tanned, thin, and utterly ordinary. While He Yulan had recently noticed some subtle changes in Su Xiu, they weren’t great enough to counter her bland appearance.

“What?” He Changming was taken aback. “Why would she want someone like that?”

“Su Xiu hopes to follow in her older sister’s footsteps. Maybe she doesn’t want a messy relationship,” He Yulan answered after some thought. She briefly described the current situation of the Su family concerning Su Xuewu and Su Xueqiang.

Hearing this, He Changming’s brows twisted into the shape of fried dough fritters.

“You didn’t expect a situation like that either, did you?” He Yulan sighed. “I don’t know what they’re thinking. Thank goodness our family isn’t such a mess…”

“Our family is smaller.” He Changming slapped his sister upside, annoyed.

“You’re already married. Why do you still behave like a child?”

“Hey! That’s not fair. I’m only like this with you. I’m very well-behaved in front of everyone else.” It was true. She had behaved as best as she could since marrying into a household of Trinity village. She was rude and unreasonable sometimes but not always; she knew when to toe the line.

“I’m glad you know.” He Changming got to his feet. “I’m leaving.”

“Where are you going? Aren’t you going to stay for the night?” He Yulan was reluctant to see her brother leave so soon.

No thanks.” He still had matters to attend to, but first, he would visit Su Xiu to see how she was. Afterward, he would give whoever had beaten Su Xiu a piece of his mind.

Since her brother was unwilling to stay overnight, He Yulan had no choice but to send him off.

He Changming did not let his sister send him off further than the door. Seeing the sky grow dark, he made for the village. He whistled when he reached the main road, and suddenly three burly figures stepped out from the woods.

“Brother Changming.”

Brother Changming, can we go?”

The three teenagers were around seventeen or eighteen years old. They had dark skin, bright eyes, and muscular bodies, making them appear heroic.

The three of them had come with He Changming. They were all from Black Eagle village. He Changming and the trio of youths usually hunted in the mountains together. They were an elite team that had gained this opportunity after defeating scores of competitors in their age group.

He Changming bumped his fists together. He would teach whoever had hurt Su Xiu a lesson they would not forget..

Chapter 173: A Coincidental Meeting

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio

“What’s gotten into you all?” A dark-skinned young man about the same age as He Changming rolled his eyes. “Are you here for fun or to fight? I didn’t bring the two of you along to muck around. Besides, even if it were for fun, would the two of you have the right to join the action?”

He Changming rubbed his nose bridge. From all appearances, it looked like his cousin was having fun. It was almost as if he were listening to a thief call another a thief – it was ridiculous! Had he not eavesdropped and spread the news, would everyone in the village have known of his plight?

Now, he was the hot topic of discussion. Everywhere he went, people would laugh until their scalps went numb.

He Changming chided his cousin, who seemed completely unaffected and continued smiling at him foolishly. “Cousin, let’s go! We’ll teach that chump a lesson. We’ve been waiting for so long. We’ll die of boredom if we have to wait any longer.”

The other two young men made faces behind his back.

“Fine. Let’s do this. We’re only going to give them a… warning.”

He Changming may have said he would give the person who hurt Su Xiu a warning, but anyone who knew him would know he was far from being so

amiable.

The quartet marched into the village openly. Who knew they would encounter a

group of sneaks acting suspiciously under cover of darkness? From their appearances, He Changming could tell they were idle men, lazy and unproductive.

Were they hoping to steal some chickens?

He Changming stalked the men, planning to catch them red-handed. By coincidence, he overheard snippets of their conversation. The more he listened, the tighter his frown and the uglier his expression became.

“Brother Shan, will Sun Dahai come?” Fatty Luo asked uncertainly. “With his arm broken, will he show up?

“Definitely.” Zhao Qianshan nodded, exuding confidence. “We had a deal. I won’t let him off the hook if he doesn’t show.”

“Alright, if you say so. We’ll join hands and beat him up till not even his mother will recognize him.” Fatty Luo rolled up his sleeves and bared his teeth. “We can’t let him off this time. Brother Hengvang said he had to nart with 100 yuan.”

When Fatty Luo mentioned the 100 yuan that had entered Sun Dahai’s pocket, Zhao Qianshan ground his teeth. “That punk has guts! It’s just a broken arm; if he lets it heal naturally, it won’t take long for it to heal, but he just had to ask for 100 yuan in compensation!”

That’s right,” Fatty Luo crowed, “The heavens smile upon us, and fortune will come knocking once we enact justice!”

Before Fatty Luo could finish speaking, Zhao Qianshan slapped him. The force of it was so strong that he even bit his tongue, and tears streamed down his face.

“Brother Shan, why did you hit me?”

“Shut it. Stop flapping those gums before you get us into trouble. We listened to Brother Hengyang because we don’t like Sun Dahai. There’s no need to bring up the will of the heavens and whatnot – it’s silly. You need to be more down-to-earth.”

Fatty Luo listened, speechless.

Why didn’t Zhao Qianshan heed his advice when he stole that chicken to cook for dinner?

He Changming and the others trailed after the duo, their expressions strange. “Brother Changming, are they here to beat up Sun Dahai too?”

It sounds like it.” He Changming agreed. “Let’s follow them and see how things go.”

“Alright then.”

The others nodded. They were all adept hunters and knew how to conceal themselves. Fatty Luo and Zhao Qianshan may have tried to be sneaky, but they were far from being able to notice, let alone shake, their tail.

It would be for the best if Fatty Luo and Zhao Qianshan were the ones to beat up Sun Dahai. That way, they could keep their reputation while getting what they had come for. It could complicate matters if word got out that they had given Sun Dahai a beating.

Even when he wanted to beat up someone, He Changming remained conscious of the need to keep a low profile so as not to attract Sun Dahai’s attention. He Changming wanted to avoid unnecessary trouble where he could..

Chapter 174: Brother Shan, We’re Here!

Translator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi- Bo Studio

It did not take more than ten minutes for the sun to set. Around this time, two individuals stumbled out of the village. He Changming and his party glared at the lazy, drunken-like figures, wishing nothing more than to beat them up.

The two men who had appeared at the village entrance were none other than Sun Dahai and Sun Dahe.

Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo called out to the two brothers. In the dim evening light, the two brothers could not see who had called them. They looked around for some time to no avail. Just as they were about to head back, cursing up a storm for wasting their time, several figures jumped them from the bushes by the roadside.

Kicks and punches were exchanged, all of which were aimed at Sun Dahai and

Sun Dahe.

With one of his arms broken, Sun Dahai could not muster enough strength to ward off the blows. On the other hand, his brother, Sun Dahe, was a burly man used to fighting with his peers in the village and more than capable of handling himself in a brawl. Zhao Qianshan, who was as thin as a bean sprout, and Fatty Luo, who was not very strong, were not Sun Dahe’s match.

Zhao Qlansnan and Fatty Luo’s underlings made it a tight ot tour against two, but despite their superior numbers, Zhao Qianshan and company could not gain the upper hand.

He Changming and his fellow hunters watched in stunned silence.

“How will they beat up Sun Dahai and Sun Dahe with strength like theirs?”

“Even weaklings pretend to be strong these days…”

“Hehe…”

“Brother Changming, let’s go! I alone will be enough to beat all six of them.”

The hunters could not help but despise Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo’s ineffectual attempts, even though they had the same goal.

The longer they watched, the more dumbfounded they became, and soon He Changming and his party did not know whether to laugh or cry.

He Changming felt an irresistable urge to facepalm. Although he did not know who had cooked up this scheme that was similar to his goals, He Changming wondered how they could be so lacking in their execution of it, sending weaklings like Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo. While he had not wanted to cause unnecessary trouble for himself, he was more than willing to do so if only to put an end to this farce. Hence, he signaled his compatriots.

“Go help those buffoons, but keep it discreet.”

“We’re on it!”

The young hunters shouted excitedly, “Brother Shan, we’re here!”

Zhao Qianshan, who found himself pinned to the ground by Sun Dahe, blinked in confusion. Where had this lot come from? Why didn’t he remember calling for reinforcements? Zhao Qianshan wondered whether it was his fame that had summoned these youngsters in his hour of need. Their timing was impeccable!

Having reached this conclusion, Zhao Qianshan was overjoyed. The pain he felt from being pinned to the ground melted away.

Fatty Luo was even more excited and exclaimed, “Brother Shan, you’re amazing! As expected of my Brother Shan.”

When He Changming heard Fatty Luo’s cry, he smirked and told his fellow hunters to hurry up. They did not want to create too big of a scene.

Sun Dahai and Sun Dahe realized the growing stakes and knew they were in trouble. They tried disentangling themselves from Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo, hoping to return to the village for help, but the duo held fast and would not release them when they heard their reinforcements on the way.

With Zhao Qianshan glued to his legs like a weight, Sun Dahe could not disengage from the fight and ended up surrounded by He Changming’s men. He soon found himself plastered to the ground alongside his brother, Sun Dahai, and beaten black and blue.

Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo were shoved out of the fight and forced to watch from the sidelines. They watched slack-jawed, awed by the agile and fearless moves He Changming’s group put on display.

“Brother Shan, where did you find these awesome friends?” Fatty Luo asked, flushed and panting.

I… I don’t know.” Zhao Qianshan noticed something off. He knew most of the hoodlums in the surrounding villages, but they were all sneaky sorts. How could he have attracted the adoration of such strong individuals? He would have left for the city long ago if he had such capabilities.

“What’s that?”

“L-lets run.’

“These fellows are too scary,” Fatty Luo agreed, wiping away the beads of sweat forming on his forehead. No sooner had he spoken than an arm wrapped around him, scaring him out of his skin.

“Ah! Ghost!”

However, Fatty Luo’s scream was nothing compared to Sun Dahai’s and the sheer misery it carried..

Chapter 175: Not Human!

He Changming grabbed both of them before they could make their quick getaway.

“Where do the two of you think you’re going?” He Changming had not participated in the action and stood watching from the sidelines. Any one of them would have been able to teach someone like Sun Dahai a lesson. There was no need to get his hands dirty for something like this. He would let those he had brought with him have some fun.

Besides, he was about to have some fun of his own.

Although Sun Dahai and Sun Dahe screamed in pain from the kicks and punches they received, none were lethal. They all knew where to hit to cause pain but no lasting injury. Soon, Sun Dahai and his brother sported heads that resembled swollen pigs.

Neither one was likely to climb out of bed without at least half a month’s rest.

“S-sir, please spare me.”

We were wrong! We won’t steal chickens ever again!”

“B-brother, you’ll be my sworn brother from this day on. I’ll do whatever you say.”

“Y-yes, that’s right. We promise we won’t tell anyone about what happened today.”

“Please, let us go!”

Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo shamelessly begged for mercy. He Changming found it amusing for the first five seconds but quickly grew annoyed with their endless prattle. “Enough. I want to know something, and you’ll answer me properly.”

“Okay…” Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo did as they were told without resisting.

“Who sent you to beat up Sun Dahai?” He Changming was wary of this nameless person who had orchestrated the events he had seen earlier. What if he was helping a competitor? Wouldn’t he shoot himself in the foot by helping his rival in love? Having arrived at this possibility, a spark ignited in his dark eyes.

Zhao Qianshan and Fatty Luo braced themselves for a litany of questions. They were organizing all their misdeeds in their heads, from peeking at girls bathing to the few chickens they had stolen. However, they shuddered when they heard the actual question He Changming asked.

The two broke out in cold sweats, made colder by the chilly evening breeze.

He Changming noticed the change in them. “What? Are you unwilling to let me know?” The more they refused to tell him, the more he felt threatened.

“Brother, it’s not that we don’t want to tell you, but we can’t.”

“That’s right! If we say anything, we’ll die.”

Fatty Luo began shaking violently as he met He Changming’s gaze. “Brother, you’re strong and surely a man amongst men… But that person isn’t human!”

Zhou Hengyang was a calamity in Fatty Luo’s heart; he was no longer human. As much as he marveled at He Changming’s abilities, how could a man match a force of nature? There was an unbridgable gulf between one and the other. He would rather offend a human than offend a human-shaped catastrophe.

“That’s right, that’s right.” Zhao Qianshan nodded vigorously. “Brother, I say this because I think of you as my kin. Don’t mess with that person. You’ll only bring ruin upon yourself for tangling with someone so evil, ruthless, and cruel,” Zhao Qianshan said, doing his best to dissuade He Changming from acting rashly, “Don’t go seeking trouble, or trouble will come knocking on your door.”

He Changming was left speechless.

He felt a headache coming along. Why was it so difficult to communicate with hoodlums?

“Just tell me who it is, and I’ll handle the rest.” He Changming hissed icily. “Don’t waste my time with petty tricks. I know someone is backing you. Just tell me who it is already.”

Zhao Qianshan felt death looming over his shoulder. He did not dare to offend Zhou Hengyang.

Zhou Hengyang would skin them alive when he found out!

“Brother, we can’t say who it is.”

“Fine! If you want to do things the hard way, that’s fine. I hear that there have been sightings of wolves in the vicinity. How would you like to become their supper?” He Changming rolled up his sleeves threateningly. Tattoos ran up along his forearm to his shoulder, depicting hosts of ghosts and gods. They seemed to come alive in the low light.

“Oh my god!” Another one that was not human!

It was too scary.. How could they be so unlucky?
