Maia had already established that she remembered who Oscar was, but he didn't realize that she remembered him like that.
She was right, in a way, about their 'normal.' They never really did the usual friend things. Sure, they went to each other's houses and went out for ice cream but, there was always a catch. She would want to see who could finish their ice cream the fastest, brainfreeze aside, and he would always want to see who could run the most back and forth, garage to garage.
They used to spend a lot of time together that way, running and running. All those days, hours, minutes spent, and yet he never got to tell Maia that he always thought she looked so pretty when she was sprinting.
When they would run, Maia would always have this smile on her face, and it was a smile reserved for only when she was going the fastest she could, and it would only grow if she was besting him in speed.
Sometimes, he wonders what would have happened if she followed him into the racing world, or just followed him to Europe in general.
She liked the wind—she had said so herself when they were about seven or eight—and she had always thought it was fun to run in the grass of the nearby park, specifically when big gusts of wind would comb her dark hair away from her face. And, one time, when Oscar had taken Maia karting for his birthday, they both had such a good time chasing down one another and trying to see who could be number one. He lead most of the laps that day, but she had claimed for once that she 'didn't care, because the wind felt so good, it doesn't matter that [she] lost.'
On that same day too, he remembers that she tried on his racing helmet, and it ended up being just a little too big on her. (Also, not that he would tell anyone, but he blushed when she wore it, which was a crazy feeling at the time for a ten year old. When he went home from the track that day, Oscar had realized that she was the only girl that could make him do that.)
Maia would have been amazing on the track. But of course...Europe.
Europe. Europe. Europe.
Life could have been different if he was able to take her with him. Maybe they both would have worn PREMA red on their bodies in their early twenties and late teens. Maybe she would have been driving alongside him during his races. But, there were too many logical difficulties, with her parents not really having enough money to support a career like that and her aspirations regarding being an environmental engineer coming first in everything and anything.
And now, look at her. An actress and a full-time student on her way to get a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. Him? Oh, he's just an idiot who happens to drive a car really fast around the world, and he's got a couple trophies for it too but, you know, who cares about that stuff, right?
A few weeks ago, Oscar was thinking to himself about how stupid it was that he wanted to avoid Maia at the premiere.
Two days ago, Oscar was thinking to himself about how badly he wanted to prove Maia wrong, and then how he intended on forgetting about her existence immediately after.
Today, sitting in the plane headed back to MTC for the last debrief of the year, Oscar is thinking to himself about how badly he wants to make things right between them.
How could he though? How could he make things right when Maia clearly didn't want to?
How to go about this, he wasn't sure, but Oscar Piastri is many things, and thankfully, a quitter isn't one of them.
