"Who are you texting?"
Theresa looked up at the sound of Charles's voice, surprised to find the boys had arrived back at the van. She turned her phone off, slipping it into her pocket before leaning forward and kissing Charles quickly. Before she could pull back however his hand snaked to her waist and kept her close, making her smile into the kiss.
"Get a room!"
Tessa pulled back, rolling her eyes and Lando who had started pretending to vomit. Charles grinned, looking for all the world like he was living the best day of his life. He turned back to Tessa.
"So, who were you texting while we left you alone for so long?" Charles teased. "Olivia?"
Tessa shook her head. "Nah, it was Hannah. Close though."
Charles's smile wavered for a second, so quick one might not have caught it if they weren't paying attention, but Theresa always paid attention to Charles. Her own smile tightened, a feeling she hadn't felt in a long time yet still familiar churning in her gut. A twitchy nervousness, an antsiness that came with the inability to anticipate a partner's thoughts.
"Oh, that's nice," Charles murmured as the others started piling back in the van. "Is she well?"
Theresa could see he was trying to be polite, but it was jarring to see him act that way around her after so long of them dating. It made her feel uneasy and she didn't like it.
She pasted on a smile. "Yeah she's good. You know what's better though? The amount of alcohol we bought at the store."
Charles groaned, but the smile on his face was genuine as he ushered Theresa into the van. "Oh no."
She grinned. "Oh yes. We're gonna have so much fun when we get to Mexico."
Charles shook his head, wrapping an arm around her and pressing a kiss to the side of her head. "I don't know about you, but I am having a lot of fun here as well."
Theresa smiled, her earlier anxiety almost completely forgotten as she leaned into her boyfriend, resting her head on his chest. "Me too."
