Story Unfolds :
At Royal bedroom chamber of Anga:
"Ap mujhe mat chunyiye. (Kindly let me go. Don't touch me.)"
A girl of sixteen was pleading to her husband. In flustered face. Her back had collided with the door. She tried hard to not to be touched by him. A little bit. She was the main female protagonist of our story Devi Supriya herself.
Devi Supriya (2nd Wife of Karna)
Her husband asked away too. He was still not sure of his feelings to her. He was consoling his heart that he was doing his duty as a husband. That was all. And it was according to his dear first wife Padma's plan who was still sitting on the closed door front. He was trying to satisfy both Supriya and Padmavati. Supriya wanted his love and tenderness. So be it like this!! His Padma wanted to share him with her baby sister. So let it be like this too!! By coming near to Supriya he was just fulfilling his duty!! He had no urge to be united with Supriya in his mind!! Alas!! Only if he knew Supriya and her devotion a little bit!! His Madhav had correctly stated that he failed to identify Supriya till now!!! To him, she was just an ordinary girl craving for his tenderness!! But to her, he was her God!! Whom she did not want to snatch away from his Goddess!!
He could force her. But it was not his nature too. He got up and backed his face to her. His mind was racing fast. Even this girl was refusing him too!! After Ashavari!!! After Draupadi!! His misfortune was with him at every step of his life!!
"Kyun?!! Kyan main achhut hoon!!! (Why?!! Am I untouchable?!!)" He had asked her. In cold tone.
Her Deity Karna
She opened her eyes wide in shock. He took her wrong!! He was offended by her behavior!!! She nodded her head violently. In dismissal. She did not meant that!! She wanted to make him happy. His happiness lied in his family. She did not missed the twinkle of his doe shaped eyes whenever he looked as Padma!! He was deeply in love with her Jiji and she did not want to ruin her paradise!! He took her too wrong!! She loved him even before she could understand the meaning of the word "love". He was her universe yet he was someone's else life too. She could not snatch him away!! From her a little bit!!! He thought she was now refuting him!! But how could Supriya show him her own heart where only he resides instead of anyone else?!! Her eyes got blurred in tears.
But he failed to watch her reaction as he was now looking at the opposite direction of her. She was facing his back. So none of them could see each other's face!!!
"Maine aisa toh nahin kahan tha. (I don't mean that.)" She tried to clarify her words. Then added "Ap mujhe chunke maile ho jayenge. Is like. (You will be dirty by touching me. That's why.)"
"Toh?!! (Then?!!)" He asked her. In the cold hissing voice. Unlike himself. He again put on his mask.
He recalled his humiliations. He was humiliated all over his life. By all. But that two humiliations at two separate Swayambar made a hole in his soft heart. Forever. He even today dreamt of them as nightmares. He was unable to forget them till now. Perhaps he would never forgive them!!!
In the Swayambar of Ashavari that proud Princess of Prayag said to him firmly -
"Main apni pitashree ke pran raksha ke liye kuch bhi Kar sakti hoon. Tum se Bibah bhi. Parantu tumse Prem kadapi nahin kar sakti. Ek Sut Putra se Prem!! Asambhab!! (I can do just anything to save my father's life. I can even marry you too. But don't expect me to fall in love with you. Love with a son of a charioteer!!! Impossible!!)"
At the Swayambar of Draupadi what did the proud Princess of Panchal said to him?!!!
"Main ek Sut Putra se Bibah kadapi nahin kar sakti!!! (I can't marry a mere son of a charioteer!!!)"
They both jumped to the conclusion. By merely considering his low social status. They did not see his calibre!! His merit!! His qualities!! His own comptence!!! For both of them he had been just a Sut Putra. And none else.
He sighed hard. Perhaps this Princess of Kalinga also thought in the same way!! He closed his eyes tightly. A single drop of tear emerged from his left eye.
"Madhava, main hi kyun?!!! (O Lord Krishna, why me?!! All the times!!)" He whispered in his mind. To his God.
No reply. Everything was too silent. He felt the silence suffocating!!! As if a storm was rushing to the horizon!!!
His clear question rang in Supriya's ears too. She looked at him in painful eyes. He misunderstood her!!!
"Main keval apki Dasi hoon. Aur meri koi parichay nahin. (I am just your big devotee. I have no other identity than that.)" She replied him truthfully.
Her soothing voice reached to his ears and with a swift motion he turned his back. To face her. He saw nothing else than devotion!! No pretention!! No fakeness!! She was telling the truth!!!
"Ap kehna kya chahte hain?!! (What you want to say?!!)" He asked her but his voice trembled slightly.
She flinched a bit. She was never very vocal. To her emotions. And before him!! She felt quite nervous!! For no reason!! His cold stare had already turned soft!! But she was still never comfortable in his presence!! His stare at her face made her restless!! She wanted him to be her idol!! But instead he wanted to be her husband!! And that also in the insurance of her Jiji!!! Not according to the desire of his heart!!
She twisted her end of the Saree in nervousness while uttering this very slowly by lowering her head "Maine ek pratigya liya hain. (I have taken a vow.)"
He arched his left eyebrow slightly to her. On question mode. But he did not utter a single word. He had wanted to hear her side.
"Main apki santan janma dena nahin chahti hoon. (I don't want to bear you a child.)" She replied in choked voice. She seemed very nervous.
He brewed his eyebrows together. A deep frown formed in his face. What was she talking about?!! What kind of promise was this?!! What was the reason of this vow?!!
She declared aloud in utmost respect by folding her hands together -
"Main apko Jiji se chinna nahin chahti hoon. Ap unki ho aur unki hi rahenge. Main keval ap dono ko dur se dekhna chahti hoon. Apke sukhi bibahit Jivan ko nasht karna nahin chahti hoon. Ham agar apke Santan ke mata bane toh na chahte huwe bhi Ham Dono ek bandhan main bandh jayenge. Santan ka bandhan sabse atut Bandhan hoti hain. Jo main nahin chahti. Is liye ap ki stri hone ki adhikari bhi nahin ho na chahti. Ek Stri ka param kartyabya hota hain apni Pati ko ek santan de. Ham toh keval ek Dasi hain apki. Ek pujarin. Seva karna chahte hain. Apke jivan pe hamara koi adhikar na kabhi tha nahi rahega!!! (I don't want to take you away from your wife. You are her and you will be hers. Forever. I will be your maid. Your devotee. I will serve you. But I will never try to become as Your wife. A wife's duty is to give a baby to her husband. So I will never bear any children to you. If I bear you a child then unwantedly you will be entangled with me. I don't want any kind of right on your life. I don't want to be named as your wife. Let me just remain as an intruder. Forever.)"
The words were piercing holes in his soft heart!! What did he thought of her!! What she turned out to be!! He thought her as a proud Princess full of false pride, prejudice and arrogance!!! And she turned out to be a Goddess who did not want to ruin his marital life!!! She was even ready to sacrifice her own love for him!! With ease!!! His eyes got blurred in tears. What a foolish mistake he was going to do?!!
"Kyun, Bade Bhaiya, ab samjhe Bhabi Supriya ko?!!! (Big brother, at least I hope now you identify the big heart of our sister-in-law Supriya?!! Now at the very last you will understand why I call her as Mahasati Supriya!!)" His deity, his Madhava, answered him. In his mind. Too clearly this time.
Karna looked at the direction of the face of Supriya. In moister eyes. Now he had truly identified her!! Now he understood why Shone was praising her?!! Why Sumedha made her best friend?!!! Why Padma was so smitten by her Su?!! Why baba Adirath made her his daughter?!! Why even his dear mother Radhama was in her favor?!! She was a truly selfless soul!! She did not want anything for herself!! She roamed into the palace in torn clothes and naked feet!! But her smile did not falter a little bit!!! She tried to help all the masses. In secret. She took care of all but avoided herself!! Her devotion was not only praiseworthy but also too divine!!! Not worthy of this bloody selfish world!!!
He recalled the warning of his deity "Bhagwan banna itna bhi saral nahin hain. (To be one's God is not a bit an easy task.)"
"Ha. Madhava aj main satya main hi inhe jan paya. (Yes, Madhava, today I really know her!!)" He murmured in his mind softly.
He had understood everything now. It seemed as if a dream to him. To get a devotee like her!! To get a wife like her!!!
He fell down limply on the floor. She ran to him. She was afraid he was ill.
"Kyan huwa?!! Ap thik toh hain na?!! (What had happened to you?!! Are you alright?!! Why you fell down?!!)" She asked him worriedly and put her right palm on his face softly. She was afraid to loose him. He did not take a good care of himself!!!
He grabbed her both palms and lifted to his mouth. Then he softly kissed her knuckles. In adoration. In love!! In respect!! He had truly recognised her now!!
She tilted her head to him. In deep surprise. What was going on?!!
"Ap kya hain?!! (What are you?!!)" He asked her. In choked voice.
"Ek sadaharn kanya. (Merely a simple girl.)" She answered him. Truthfully. To herself she was very ordinary One.
He clutched her hand too tightly in his palm and put it on his own chest. "Uhhu. Ap sadharan nahin. Ap toh aj se mere Devi hain. (No. You are not a simple and ordinary girl. Not a bit. You are surely an extraordinary One. my Goddess. You are my Goddess. Now onwards I will pray tribute to you. As my Goddess.)"
He dragged her towards himself and softly murmured in her ears "Ajse Ham apke bhakt hain. (From today I am your biggest devotee. I promise.)"
She smiled at him. God knew what this naive and gullible girl had realize from that situation!!! But she at least realized one thing surely. She had win his heart that day!!!
Out of the door one girl was also now nodding her head Merrily. She was Devi Padmavati herself. She was so sure that her husband Karna would see the goodness of her foolish Su and he would not refute her. A bit. As a best friend of Karna she knew him more than anyone else. She knew that he was a softhearted man whose story face was just his mask!! She even tried to drag her own collar in vain!! She had no collar!!
Devi Vrushali Padmavati
In this way that day gullible Supriya reveiced her first devotee. In her dear husband Karna!!! She wanted to pray to him!! Instead he started to worship her!! Till his last breath!!! These duo would remain like this forever!!
