Death Penalty

Arjun noticed that Prem's reactions lacked something. It acted as akin to a shock and anxiety trigger. To resolve the issue, he made the decision to talk to him. "Papa ji,kuch gadabad hai kya(is something wrong?)" Arjun understood more about Prem than just his shake of the head. "Apane daamaad ko sach batao. Main jaanata hoon ki aap kuch chunautiyon ka saamana kar rahe hai. Aap ek jaise vyakti nahi lagate(Tell your son-in-law the truth. I am aware that you have been experiencing certain challenges. You don't seem like the same person.)" Prem admitted with a sigh. "Arjun, meri phaansi ki saja do saptaah se bhi kam samay mein hone vaali hai. Meri maut nikat hai. Haalaanki, main marane se peedit nahi hoon. Isaka uddeshy aap logo se alag hona hai(my execution sentence is due in less than two weeks. My death is near. However, I'm not suffering from dying. The purpose is to part from you guys.)" Arjun knew that the correct thing needed to be done. "Main court ke saath vaastavik sachchai par charcha karoonga. Yah jaari nahi rah sakata(I will discuss the actual truth with the court. This cannot continue.)" Before he departed, Prem took his hand, half in sorrow, half in fury. "Nahi, tum nahi kare. Abhi ko is dard ke havaale karane ke bajaay, main mar jaoongi. Vah mere javaan bete jaisa hai. Arjun, tum samajh nahi rahe ho(No, you are not. Rather than submitting Abhi to this pain, I would die. He is like my young son. Arjun, you're not understanding.)" Arjun gave a headshake. "Aap samajh nahi rahe hai. Prthvi par aapaka jeevan samaapt ho raha hai. Mummy ji, aapaki beti aur poora parivaar kasht sahega. Vishesh roop se main. Mujhe ise sahi karana hoga. Yum mujhe rokane mein asamarth ho(You're not understanding. Your life on Earth is coming to an end. Mummy ji, your daughter, and the entire family will endure hardships. Especially me. I must put this right. You are powerless to stop me.)" Prem gave him a tense glance before he departed. Abhishek sat in a dimly lighted room, wringing his hands, a great weight of shame pressing him down. Arjun was standing across him, desperation and frustration engraved on his face. There was a tight silence in the room until Arjun finally spoke. "Abhishek, tumhe sach chhupaana band karana hoga. Yah aapaki jaan jokhim mein daalane se kaheen adhik hai. Yah Prem ka bhi jeevan hai(you have to stop hiding the truth. This is more than just your life on the line. It's Prem's life as well)," argued Arjun. Unable to look directly into Arjun's fierce gaze, Abhishek hung his head. "Mujhe pata hai Arjun, lekin mujhe dar lag raha hai. Agar maine aatmasamarpan kar diya to main kaaraavaas mein chala jaoonga aur sab kuch kho doonga(I know, Arjun, but I'm scared. I'll go to imprisonment and lose everything if I surrender.)" Arjun became extremely irate and raised his voice, " Kya tum nahi samajhe Abhishek? Aap chup rahakar ek nirdosh vyakti ko - jise aap Papa maanate hai - us aparaadh ka khaamiyaaja bhugatane ki anumati de rahe hai jo usane nahi kiya hai. Ab jab Riddhima aapake saath nahi hai to sudhaar karane ka daayitv aap par Prem aur Riddhima ki aatma ka hai(Don't you understand, Abhishek? You're allowing an innocent man—who you consider as a father—to bear the brunt of a crime he didn't commit by remaining silent. You owe it to Prem and Riddhima's soul to make amends now that Riddhima is no longer with you.)" Feeling the heaviness of his actions, Abhishek's eyes were bursting with tears. "Main Riddhima se badala lena chaahata tha kyonki main usase pyaar karata tha. Mujhe vishvaas tha ki main jo kar raha tha vah sahi tha(I wanted to exact revenge on Riddhima because I loved her. I believed that what I was doing was correct.)" Arjun's rage turned to compassion. With a gentle tone, he moved closer to Abhishek. "Main samajhata hoon, Abhishek. Main aapaki peeda aur nyaay ki aapaki ichcha ko mahasoos karata hoon, lekin Prem ke jeevan ko khatare mein daale bina ise poora karane ka ek aur tareeka hai.(I understand, Abhishek. I feel your suffering and your desire for justice, but there is another way to accomplish this without endangering Prem's life.)" Abhishek raised his head and met Arjun's gaze. "Arjun, main abhi kya kar sakata hoon? Ise sahi karane ke liye main kya kar sakata hoon(what can I do right now? What can I do to make this right?)" Arjun gave Abhishek a reassuring squeeze on the shoulder. "Aap court mein eemaanadaar rahakar shuruaat kar sakate hai. Sveekaar kare ki vah aap hi the jisane Riddhima se badala liya tha. Prem saza ka hakadaar nahi hai, lekin vah aapake kaaryon ke liye ise sveekaar karane ko taiyaar hai(You may begin by being honest in court. Admit that it was you who exacted retribution on Riddhima. Prem doesn't deserve the punishment, but he's willing to accept it for your actions.)" With a scarcely audible voice, Abhishek brushed away his tears and said, "Main yah karoonga, Arjun. Main Prem ki raksha ke liye eemaanadaar rahoong(I'll do it, Arjun. I'll be honest in order to protect Prem.)"

(Abhishek Rajesh-Shaheer Shiekh)

With a wave of relief, Arjun nodded. "Main aabhaari hoon Abhishek. Aap samajhadaari se chayan kar rahe hai. Naitik roop se kaary karane mein kabhi der nahi hoti(I'm thankful Abhishek. You are selecting wisely. It's never too late to act morally.)" Together, they left the room with the resolve to see that justice was done and to spare Prem from the unjust penalty he was subjected to.

In the days that followed their conversation, Abhishek struggled to accept the gravity of the knowledge he was going to share. Even though he knew it was the correct thing to do, he was tormented by guilt and fear of the consequences. Arjun was there for him, encouraging and comforting. "Mujhe pata hai ki yah tumhaare liye sachamuch kathin hai, Abhishek, lekin dhyaan rakhe ki tum yah akele nahi kar rahe ho. Yah antatah Prem ke liye cheezon ko uchit banaane ke baare mein hai, aur hum saath milakar natijon se nipatenge(I know this is really tough for you, Abhishek, but keep in mind that you're not doing this alone. It's about making things fair for Prem in the end, and we'll deal with the fallout together.)" Abhishek could feel the anxiety building as the court date drew near. He couldn't help but consider how his revelation would affect the people he loved and himself. Arjun and Abhishek had a conversation in a tranquil park one evening. Finally, as they sat on a bench, Abhishek opened up. "Arjun, main sochata rahata hoon ki yah sab kaise hoga. Mera jeevan kabhi bhi pahale jaisa nahi rahega, aur mujhe yakeen nahi hai ki main isake baad kaise nipatoonga(I keep wondering about how this will all turn out. My life will never be the same, and I'm not sure how I'll handle the aftermath.)" "Main tumase jhooth nahi boloonga, Abhishek; yah aasaan nahi hoga(I won't lie to you, Abhishek; it won't be easy)," he smiled consolingly. "Lekin ekamaatr cheej jo nyaay pradaan kar sakati hai aur isame shaamil sabhi logo ko band kar sakati hai, vah sachchai hai, jo ek majaboot cheej hai(But the only thing that can offer justice and closure to all those involved is the truth, which is a strong thing.)"

(Courthouse, Mumbai)

Arjun stood in front of the lawyers, the judge, and the public in a dark and tense courtroom, ready to share the truth that had been weighing on his heart for far too long. Everybody was waiting for his announcement, and the air was heavy with uncertainty. "Aapaka sammaan, sammaanit joury sadasy, aur upasthit sabhi log, aaj main us rahasy ko ujaagar karane ke liye aage aaya hoon jisane mujhe varshon se pareshaan kiya hai(Your Honour, esteemed jury members, and everyone in presence, today I come forward to reveal a secret that has tortured me for years,)" Arjun said in his opening statement. "Mainne ise apane priy sasur Prem Joshi ke sammaan ke kaaran chhipaakar rakha hai(I have kept it hidden out of respect for my dear father-in-law Prem Joshi.)" Whispers and gasps echoed across the courtroom, drawing focus to Prem, who was sitting with his head bent and a troubled heart. Arjun went on to explain, "Kaanoon ki nazar mein, Prem par us aparaadh ka jhootha aarop lagaaya gaya tha jo usane nahi kiya tha, ek hatya jo vaastav mein kisi aur ne ki thi(In the eyes of the law, Prem was falsely accused of a crime he did not commit, a murder that was actually committed by someone else.)"Just as Prem was prepared to beg Arjun to stop, his panic increased. He got to his feet, but Priya convinced him that her husband was doing the right thing. The jury and lawyers leaned forward, fascinated by Arjun's revelation of the truth. "Prem ne hatya nahi ki. Vaastav mein, us dukhad raat mein, usane ek aadami ki jaan bachai thi. Vah aadami hamaara priy mitr Abhishek hai, jise thagon ke ek samooh ne gambheer roop se ghaayal kar diya tha(Prem did not commit the murder. In reality, on that tragic night, he saved a man's life. That man is our dear friend Abhishek, who was seriously injured by a group of thugs.)" The unexpected witness, Abhishek, arrived in court. He appeared serious yet determined, prepared to face the harsh realities of life. "Duniya ko poori sachchai jaanane ki jaroorat hai. Ve aparaadhi the aur unhe mujhase vyaktigat shikaayat thi. Prem ne mujhe bachaane ke liye apani jaan khatare mein daal di kyonki vah jaanata tha ki main Riddhima se kitana pyaar karata tha aur usake saath hui galatiyon ko sudhaarane ke liye kitana bechain tha. Usane mere kaaryon ki zimmedaari sveekaar ki aur isaka bojh khud par daala. Maananeey, mainne apani Riddhima ki hatya ka badala lene ke liye pyaar se gundo ko goli maar di.(The world needs to know the whole truth. Those were criminals and they had a personal grudge against me. Prem threw his life in danger to save me because he knew how much I loved Riddhima and how desperate I was to right the wrongs done to her. He accepted responsibility for my actions and placed the burden on himself. Your Honour, I shot the goons out of love to get revenge on them for killing my Riddhima.)" As soon as Prem heard Abhishek's confession, tears flooded his eyes. There was a palpable sense of severity in the air as the entire courtroom fell silent. "Aparaadhee mera peechha kar rahe the kyonki mainne Riddhima ke liye pyaar aur nyaay ki buniyaadi ichcha ke kaaran aisa kiya(The criminals were pursuing me because I acted out of love for Riddhima and a fundamental yearning for justice)," Abhishek went on. "Prem mere parivaar ke liye bete ki tarah tha aur mere liye Papa ki tarah. Main ab use apane kaaryon ki keemat chukaane nahi de sakati(Prem was like a son to my family and like a Papa to me. I can no longer let him cover the cost of my actions.)" The crowd, the jury, and the lawyers were all tremendously touched by Abhishek's candor and Prem's selflessness on behalf of his friend. They applauded Prem's bravery and altruism as they stood together. "Yah adaalat yah ghoshana karati hai ki Prem apane khilaaph lagae gae aaropon mein nirdosh hai(This court hereby declares that Prem is innocent of the charges against him,)" the judge declared, wiping away a tear. "Vah bahut sammaanit aur charitravaan vyakti hai jinhonne ek jeevan bachaane ke liye apani svatantrata ka tyaag kar diya. Hum unake prati atyant aabhaari hai(He is a man of great honor and character who gave up his freedom to save a life. We are incredibly grateful to him.)" "Abhishek hatyaara hai, lekin use maut ki saza nahi balki saat saal ki jail ki saza kaatani hogi. Main Abhishek ke khulepan ki saraahana karata hoon kyonki kisi ko aisa karane ke liye bahut saahas ki jaroorat hoti hai(Abhishek is the murderer, but he will serve a seven-year prison sentence rather than receive the death penalty. I appreciate Abhishek's openness since it takes a lot of courage for someone to do this.)" Ultimately, Abhishek's admission resulted in the implementation of justice. Abhishek felt a feeling of atonement and the opportunity to start over while confronting the consequences of his actions, while Prem was released from the false conviction that had plagued him for years. Preeti lost all control over her feelings after following the trial with a sorrowful heart. "Mujhe bahut khed hai, Prem, mainne tumhaare saath jo vyavahaar kiya usake liye(I'm so sorry, Prem, for the way I treated you,)" she cried out as she ran forward, tears flowing down her cheeks. "Mujhe bharosa karana chaahiye tha ki tum nirdosh ho.(I should have trusted that you were innocent.)" Prem stretched out to Preeti, tears welling up in his eyes. "Chinta mat karo, Preeti. Hamane bahut saara samay kho diya hai. Mainne tumhe yaad kiya(Don't worry, Preeti. We've lost a ton of time. I missed you.)" Cheers and praise filled the courtroom as Prem gave his wife and daughter an embrace while shedding tears of love. After a grueling 18-year separation, the family finally got back together, and their love was stronger than ever. Prem moved to Arjun and embraced him, tears gushing out of his eyes. "Mera jeevan, mera parivaar aur mera sammaan sab tumhaari vajah se vaapas aa gaya hai. Tum mere rakshak aur mere sachche beta ho(My life, my family, and my honor are all back because of you. You are my savior and my true son.)" The judge expressed her sincere gratitude after being deeply touched by the emotional demonstration of love and familial ties in the courtroom. "Ek nyaayaadheesh ke roop mein apane poore kaaryakaal ke dauraan, mainne shaayad hi kabhi itana gahara aur sthaayi pyaar dekha ho jitana Mr. Arjun aur unaki patni ke beech hai. Yah Pakistani aur bhaarateey logo ke beech seemaon, poorvaagrah aur saanskrtik vibhaajan ko khatm karata hai. Isake baavajood, yah parivaaron ko sudhaarane aur ekajut karane ki Prem ki shaashvat kshamata ka pramaan hai. Aaj is adaalat kaksh mein upasthit hona, jab nyaay itani dayaaluta aur prem se kiya ja raha hai, ek sammaan ki baat hai(Throughout my time as a judge, I have rarely seen love as deep and enduring as the one that exists between Mr. Arjun and his wife. It cuts over boundaries, prejudice, and the cultural divide between Pakistani and Indian people. In spite of this, it is proof of the love's eternal ability to mend and unite families. Being present in this courtroom today, when justice is being administered with such kindness and love, is an honor.)" As the drama in the courtroom developed, it became increasingly clear how diverse the participants were. Priya, a Hindustani, and Arjun, a Muslim from Pakistan, were wed, and their undying love overcame the cultural and religious divide between them. In addition to being a legal undertaking, Arjun's efforts to secure Prem's freedom were a manifestation of his love and respect for Priya's family, regardless of their disparate nationalities and religious beliefs. Despite being conscious of the cultural and religious differences, the judge was extremely touched by Arjun's level of devotion and love. It was a love that knew no bounds, destroying obstacles and demonstrating the ability of love to bring people together in the face of hardship. Arjun's unfailing support and commitment to bringing Priya's family back together were a bright example of how love can overcome even the most difficult obstacles in a society where differences frequently lead to separation. In the courtroom, love's strength and determination were shown triumphing alongside the triumph of justice. Reunited, the family rejoiced in their newfound happiness and expressed gratitude for the truth, love, and courage that had set them free. It was a day of hope restored and redemption; a day when justice was done and love overcame adversity.

Prem and Preeti found themselves in a peaceful area of their garden under the moonlight, with the gentle scent of blossoming flowers filling the air. Their love had rekindled since the stress and struggles of the past had vanished. Preeti's hand was delicately taken by Prem, and their fingers interlaced, making a connection that appeared to last forever. "Preeti," he said in a voice that was a mixture of love and sorrow, "Pichhale 18 varshon mein maine tumhe har pal yaad kiya hai(I've missed you every moment of the past 18 years.)" Tears sparkled in Preeti's eyes, yet her lips formed a tender smile. "Prem, maine bhi tumhe bahut yaad kiya hai. Yah avishwasaniye hai ki humne ek doosare se alag hokar itana samay barbaad kiya hai(I've missed you too. It's unbelievable that we've wasted so much time apart.)" With his eyes focused on her, Prem drew her closer and whispered, "Hamaara pyaar dooriyon se bach gaya hai. Yah ab bhi utana hi majaboot hai jitana hamaare pyaar ki shuruaat mein tha(Our love has survived the distance. It is just as strong now as it was at the beginning of our love.)" As Preeti leaned in to give Prem a passionate kiss, her heart leaped for joy. Their kiss held the promise of a future together, the desire of years apart, and the depth of their love."Prem, main tumase itana pyaar karata hoon jitana shabdon mein vyakt nahi kiya ja sakata(I love you more than words can express,)" Preeti whispered as they split up. "Aur har gujarate din ke saath main tumhe aur adhik pyaar karata hoon(And I love you more with every day that goes by,)" Prem answered as he pulled her close, their bodies merging together perfectly. "Preeti, hamaare paas un varshon ki bharapai ke liye apana poora jeevan hai jo hamane kho die hai(we have our entire lives to make up for the years we missed.)" Their love returned under the gentle moonlight, and the past seemed to disappear. Their love was as intense and profound as ever once they had eventually found their way back to one another.

Leaning her head on Arjun's shoulder, Priya and Arjun watched them from a distance. "Bahut bahut dhanyavaad Arjun. Mere Papa ko bachaane ke liye. Mere jeevan ka sabase sukhad pahaloo aap hai. Mujhe tumase hamesha pyaar rahega(A lot of thanks, Arjun. For rescuing my Papa. The most joyful aspect of my life is you. I will love you forever.)" Arjun kissed her tenderly and ran his fingers over her hair. "I love you too." It was a serene and lovely night.
