Backstory:Marie and Hank Schrader were a loving couple who welcomed their twins, Melanie and Austin, into the world in the sweltering summer of 1991 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Schrader family lived a seemingly ordinary life in their suburban home, but beneath the surface, secrets and aspirations simmered.
Austin Schrader was the epitome of the all-American boy next door. He was a strapping young man who excelled on the football field at Albuquerque High School. His broad shoulders and chiseled features made him the heartthrob of the school, but behind his rugged exterior was a secret he guarded fiercely. Austin had known since he was a teenager that he was gay, but he was afraid to reveal his true self to his family, especially his tough-as-nails cop father, Hank. To cope with the internal struggle, Austin found himself drawn to the wrong crowd, shoplifting with his mother, Marie, as a way to seek solace.
Marie Schrader, once a homemaker, had a dark side of her own. The thrill of theft provided an adrenaline rush that helped her escape the monotony of her daily life. She introduced Austin to this criminal world, bonding with him over stolen goods while inadvertently pushing him further into secrecy about his sexuality.
