3rd POV
All of the students and adults were currently enjoying themselves on a break, or helping give information on Mantle and Atlas until they were teleported to the theater for the final time.
Ruby: Waaaaahhh!!! We're back!
Weiss: Again!?
Ozpin: What could Soviet want to show us now?
Oobleck: Either way! I am excited to learn more about the future or even the past!
Soviet: How about both comrade?
Everyone watched as Soviet walked out the shadows for the final time as Ruby dashed to him.
Ruby: Soviet!
Soviet: Hello mini comrade. How are you doing?
Ruby: Great! We just finished Operation Typhoon!
Soviet: Nice to know! Now get up here!
Soviet then hoisted Ruby onto his shoulders with a laugh as he heard Oobleck.
Oobleck: Really!
Soviet: Yes, comrade. We are learning about World War 1 people and events alongside World War 2.
Ironwood: So, who and what are we learning about?
Soviet: Heroes/the most decorated soldiers and other events.
Salem: Well, this should be interesting~
Robyn: So, who's first?
Soviet: The most decorated woman of the Great War.
This piqued the interest of most of the people inside as they took their seats.
Nebula: What's her name?
Soviet: Milunka Savic. But she goes by many names, The Serbian Joan of Arc.
The mention of Arc caught RWBY and JNPR's interest as well.
Soviet: The Female Soldier, The Lioness of Serbia, and what most people know her as, The Lady of the Dark.
Jaune: Question.
Soviet: Da?
Jaune: Who is Joan of Arc?
Soviet smiled.
Soviet: Joan of Arc is a patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orleans and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years War. Claiming to be acting under divine guidance, she became a military leader who transcended gender roles and gained recognition as a savior of France.
This small lesson inspired Jaune to keep pushing himself, if she was able to transcend gender roles then he should work as hard as her while others admired her from the sounds of it, but Ruby had a small question, looking down.
Ruby: What do you mean transcended gender roles?
Soviet: You see during the times you now are in and before; women aren't technically allowed to fight as soldiers.
This confused and worried the students.
Weiss: Can you please elaborate more? As we are soldiers, are we not?
Soviet: Yes, you are, it's just in these times... well, see... women were only allowed in non-combatant roles, meaning cooks and nurses.
Yang: I am not putting on a nurse outfit! Or cooking someone's food!
Soviet: Da, but since you are working for the US military, and are working on the behalf of Vale, and being damn good soldier, they are currently allowing you to be soldiers... or just because that news hasn't reached the White House or Washington in general.
Arslan: Good! Because we shouldn't be forced to be a nurse or cook!
Soviet: Mhm, now let's continue with the song.
Cinder then leaned over to Emerald.
Cinder: Ozpin and everyone else are too busy dealing with Atlas, take notes on these soldiers. We will try to eliminate them before they are a problem for the mistress.
Emerald: Yes, Cinder.
Soviet: Now for a backstory, Milunka Savić was a Serbian woman who took her brother's place in the army. Partly disguised as a man, she would eventually be among the most decorated soldiers of WW1.
Nora: Cool! She disguised herself as a man to fight!
Ironwood: She took her brother's place; she is a good sister.
Winter nodded with Weiss and a few others.
Soviet: Now let's continue.
Everyone started to listen to the beat as they saw a person wearing a cloak and hood.
Ruby: Ooooh!
Brawnz: So, that's what she looked like.
Who shall be remembered
In the ancient house of war?
All the medals, all those stories
In the alley of the greats
Penny: What is the alley of the greats?
Soviet: Belgrade New Cemetery, it is an architectural unit, it was formed in 1926–1927 as the first lot specifically designed for the nationally important people.
Penny: Thank you for the knowledge!
Soviet: No problem comrade.
Oobleck was then seen writing down the notes.
Celebrated hero, who has wandered through the dark
She stand before you, all that metal shining bright
Winter: Question.
Soviet: Da comrade?
Winter: What was one of the feats she did to be a hero?
Soviet: Hm, she jumped into an Austrian trench and took 20 prisoners single handedly using a grenade, if I remember correctly.
Winter: I would understand 2 maybe 3 but 20 prisoners!?
Ozpin: It sounds like a story that wouldn't really happen, but if it's coming from you Soviet, I do believe I can accept that fact.
Soviet nodded once more.
Lost in time, returning to the light
Bow before, this lady fights for life
So sister
Oobleck: Lost to time!?
Soviet: Yes, her story was forgotten about for a few years but was able to resurface.
Oobleck: That is good! A national hero shouldn't be forgotten!
Raise your hand
For the lady of the dark
Soldier with no will to kill, with a philanthropic heart
Coco: She was a philanthropic?
Soviet: Da, the only reason she did join, as I say again, was to take her brother's place who was drafted.
Coco: Thank you~
Soviet: Da.
Meanwhile Ruby was waving her hands in the air with a few others listening to the song.
Ruby: She sounds so coooool!
Forever
Break the norm
She's the girl in uniform
Fighting side by side with men, she will fight until the end
Ironwood: She took the place of her brother and became a hero in the process.
Ozpin: Truely something honorable.
Lied to be respected
And to change her brother's fate
Took a bullet, earned her freedom
And a place among the stars
And she served the Iron squadron, served the toughest of them all
No fear of dying, for the frontline she was born
Octavia: Took a bullet and earned her freedom?
Soviet: During the Battle of Bregalnica in the second Balkan war, by a Bulgarian grenade she was injured, and it was the field surgeons who discovered that she was, in fact, a woman. While in other cases she took a bullet all while having the same freedom as men.
Gwen: That's cool.
Ozpin: But what is this Iron Squadron?
Soviet: IF remembered correctly, the Iron Squadron was a special Serbian unit. The primary role of the Iron Squadron was to protect and defend Serbia's vital railway lines and infrastructure. This was crucial because railways were the primary mode of transportation and logistics during the war.
Sacrifice, she took her brother's place
War to war, a place where she belong
So brother
Willow: It sounds like she belonged in war.
Soviet: Some say she does, some say she doesn't either way, she was an amazing soldier.
Ironwood: I would be interested in meeting her.... after I find a way to get out of the Atlas prison.
Raise your hand
For the lady of the dark
Soldier with no will to kill, with a philanthropic heart
Forever
Break the norm
She's the girl in uniform
Fighting side by side with men, she will fight until the end
Soon the solo started to play as people listened.
Ruby: Man, I wish we could meet her. She sounds so cool and interesting!
Yang and a few other students gave off their own opinions as Soviet smiled.
Soviet: Comrades.
Ruby: Yeah comrades?
Soviet: Want to hear some good news.
Nadir: What is it?
Soviet: Milunka Savic is coming to Remnant.
Ruby/Nora: REALLY!!
Soviet: Yes, if I remember correctly the 2nd Company of the 1st Infantry Regiment in Serbia is her company. If not, she will be sent here either way due to her skills.
Ruby: I am excited to meet her!
Don't fear the reaper
Don't fear the war
She spared the life of brother's
She'll fight for honor
She'll fight for life
A lady goes to war
...
Raise your hand
For the lady of the dark
Raise your hand
For the lady of the dark
Soldier with no will to kill, with a philanthropic heart
Forever
Break the norm
She's the girl in uniform
Fighting side by side with men, she will fight until the end
Soon the echo was heard as the video ended.
Reese: It's going to be interesting if we ever meet her.
Glynda: Excuse me, Mr. Soviet.
Soviet: Da? And just call me Soviet, comrade.
Glynda: If you suggest Soviet, but where are these Serbians going to be sent?
Soviet: Like the Chinese and Japanese, the Serbs will be sent to the island of Vytal.
Soon things started to click for a few of the people except Ironwood.
Ironwood: Chinese? Japanese?
Ozpin: Yes, James. The two nations of China and Japan have joined the UN.
This started to confuse Ironwood more.
Ironwood: What is the UN?
Soviet: This will take a minute.
Timeskip
Ironwood: So, Thornfield was arrested while Mistral has fallen to the renamed United Nations while the 50,000 men armies of China and Japan joined gathering on Vytal while these Serbians will do the same when we return?
Ozpin: Correct.
Ironwood sighed as he laid further back in his seat.
Ironwood: I have missed a lot in these past months.
Winter: Yes you have General.
Ironwood: Schn- Winter, I am no longer a general after being revoked of the rank. Please just call me James.
Winter: Are you sure sir?
Ironwood nodded.
Winter: If you suggest...
Soviet then clapped his hands.
Soviet: Good figuring this all out! Next song, A Ghost in the Trenches.
Gwen: A ghost?
Soviet: Yes, you see Franics Pegahmagabow. The most decorated Canadian soldier he was practically born as sniper and concluded WWI with 378 confirmed kills. He also captured over 300 prisoners.
Ruby: 378 kills!?
Nebula: Oh my Oum!
The students were in a mixture of shock and awe learning this.
Glynda: I can see why he is the most decorated.
Yang: So, can we start?
Soviet: Not yet, as I have one more fact.
Salem: And that is Mr. Soviet?
Soviet: This is where the ghost part comes in, as he was known to sneak into German lines and collect their patches in their sleep.
Everyone looked shocked with a few jaws dropping.
Blake: Wait what!?
Winter: He... would collect the unit patches while the enemy sleeps...
Weiss: I... How did he not get caught...
Soviet shrugged.
Mercury: Gotta admit, he's got balls of steel.
Penny: Yes! But I do wish to learn more!
Ciel nodded as Soviet clapped his hands.
Soviet: Da, now let's start.
Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
Soon the music started to blare in the theater.
Velvet: Intense start!
Coco: To say the least!
Willow: Though, he does sound like an interesting man.
Soviet: Yes, he was. You all can meet him right now as he is temporarily working in Terran Tastes until their next deployment.
Nora: Ooooh! What's that?
Soviet: Ah, Terran Tastes is a restaurant opened in Vale ran by excess military cooks that weren't in Pathfinder and other soldiers that aren't in deployment.
Ozpin: I am assuming it's Earth food?
Glynda: It is.
Robyn: Good food too.
Winter and May M agreed with them.
Soon everyone was looking at the 4.
Ironwood: You've been there?
Glynda: Yes, the food served there is delicious to say the least.
Winter: Yes it is.
Soviet then clapped his hands gaining the attention.
Soviet: We are getting off track, let's continue.
Ruby, still sitting on Soviet's head was thinking about the food they could try.
Ruby: Ok! But team! We are going there to try the food!
Yang: I can accept that.
Blake: Me too.
Weiss: That doesn't seem like an issue, so I guess I'll come.
Soviet: Good, let us continue.
A force deployed from overseas
A war in foreign land await the eager recruits
And in their midst, among the men
A soldier with a different past return to his roots
Brawnz: Return to his roots?
Roy: What does that mean?
Nolan: Was he a soldier or something?
Soviet then corrected them.
Soviet: Francis was an aboriginal Canadian who was an expert hunter.
Oobleck: But wasn't there no Grimm back on Earth!?
Soviet: Nyet, he hunted animals such as bears, wolf's and such.
Port: But what is an aboriginal.
Soviet: Hm, this will take a minute to explain.
Timeskip
Soviet had explained the Age of Discovery, the conquests across the world about the British, German and other empires who created colonies across the world with encounters with natives and aboriginals.
Oobleck was in his seat as Port looked at him writing on his notepad.
Oobleck: Such fascinating history!
Port: You seem to be enjoying yourself Bart.
Soviet: It seems he is. Now let us continue once more.
Into battle, the gas has them pinned
Then this soldier invoke the spirits of the wind
Salem: Oh~? And what does that mean?
Soviet: It is suggested that Pegahmagabow invoked the spirits of the wind during a battle during a gas attack, and the gas was pushed back to the Imperial Germans by the wind.
Ozpin: Hm, interesting.
Nolan: Man, Earth is getting more interesting the more we learn.
Oobleck: That is the beauty of learning from the past! As we learn to not commit the mistakes before.
Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
Just another man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
Ruby: Man these Earth snipers seem so interesting! I want to try and compete against them!
Soon the students thought of something.
Yang: True... also where did you they put our weapons?
Soviet: Your weapons you had were put into the Pathfinder Armory, more specifically a special part of the armory containing Remnant weapons.
Ruby: Good! I don't want anything to happen to my baby!
Soviet: Mhm, now let us continue.
And on the fields of Passchendaele
A guiding light for reinforcements finding their way
And in the Battle of the Scarpe
Bring ammo over no man's land and fire away
Robyn: He crossed no man's land!?
Fiona: That's like asking to be shot!
Joanna: No kidding...
Ozpin: But what's the Scarpe? We know of Passchendaele...
Soviet: Well... to explain this whole verse, during the Second Battle of Passchendaele. His battalion was given the task to attack Passchendaele but when the reinforcements got lost he was instrumental in guiding them and making sure they got to their destination.
Ironwood: Interesting, he led the reinforcements through the wasteland.
Willow: What about the Scarpe?
Soviet: In the Battle of the Scarpe, his company was running dangerously low on ammunition and was in danger of being surrounded. He fearlessly ran through machine gun and rifle fire in no-man's-land and gathered enough ammo for his company to continue fighting.
Raven: 'How foolish, he had a chance to get out of there. He only got lucky he survived that attack.'
Fox: I wonder how he acts, is he humble and kind, or is he rude and serious?
Soviet: That is for you to find out comrades.
In the battle, the gas had them pinned
Pegahmagabow
Invoked the spirits of the wind
Robyn: Ugh... the gas attacks... You guys explaining it is already terrifying, but I would rather not witness it...
Ruby: At least the Germans got a taste of their own medicine...
Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
Just another man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
Soon the guitar solo started as people jammed with it.
Nora: I love this guitar solo!
Ren nodded his head.
Ren: I do too.
Suddenly various agreements with the guitar solo were heard.
Soon text started to appear.
"FRANCIS PEGAHMAGABOW 1891-1952"
"HE WAS BORN NATIVE IN THE SHAWANAGA FIRST NATION WHERE HIS NAME WAS BINAASWI (THE WIND THAT BLOWS OFF)"
Nebula: Interesting.
Dew: His name meant something related to the wind.
Gwen: And he invoked the spirits of the wind...
Octavia: It's like he was the spirit of the wind.
"HE VOLUNTEERED TO THE CANADIAN EXPIDITIONARY FORCES"
"HE BECAME THE FIRST NATION'S SOLDIER MOST HIGHLY DECORATED FOR BRAVERY IN CANADIAN MILITARY HISTORY"
"HE HAD SERVED FOR ALMOST THE WHOLE WAR AND WAS THE MOST EFFECTIVE SNIPER OF WORLD WAR 1"
Ruby: 'Almost?'
Yang: Man, the first in Canadian military history?
May Z: He is also highly decorated. The most decorated doesn't mean he was majorly decorated, he could've had one more medal than another soldier, but this proves it since he was highly decorated.
BRN_ was in slight shock. Brawnz then whispered to Nolan.
Brawnz: That was the most she's talked in a while.
Nolan rapidly nodded.
"AND HAD BUILT A REPUTATION AS A SKILLED MARKSMAN"
"USING THE MUCH-MALIGNED ROSS RIFLE"
"HE WAS CREDITED WITH 378 KILLS"
"BY THE TIME OF HIS DISCHARGE HE HAD GAINED THE RANK OF SERGEANT MAJOR"
Ironwood: A Sergeant Major, impressive.
Winter nodded as the song continue.
Under fire, a ghost that
Under fire, a ghost that roams the battlefield
Move between the lines, a soldier breaking the confines
Just another man and rifle, a marksman and a scout revealed
Makes his way from trench to trench alone, moving undetected
Francis stayed and fought throughout the war
Made his way until the end alive
As the video ended, Ruby looked down to Soviet.
Ruby: Question comrade.
Soviet: Da?
Ruby: Earlier it said almost the whole war. When did he start to serve?
Soviet: Since the practical start of the war, August 1914.
Ruby: Cool!
Soviet: Now, next song, 82nd All The Way.
Arslan: The 82nd Division I'm assuming?
Soviet: Da, more specifically Sergeant Alvin York, currently Corporal York.
Ironwood: So this is the future of this soldier?
Soviet: Sort of.
Ozpin: How so?
Soviet: Do you remember what I told you all the first time you were here?
Those who were in the theater the first time tried to remember with only a few remembering.
Glynda: Ah, that's right you said Sergeant York captured 132 Germans... while the Lost Battalion was also supposed to happen.
Ruby: So, this is about him capturing 132 enemies?
Soviet: Correct, and with a few other details I left out, now this is Alvin York's story.
The intro then started as the AA appeared.
Penny: Comrade Soviet, what is the AA?
Soviet who was now beaming with happiness gave the answer.
Soviet: Well, my other red headed comrade! The AA is the logo for the 82nd Infantry Division, also known as the All-American division.
Penny: Thank you, comrade Soviet!
Ciel: But what does this All-American mean?
Soviet: Currently the 82nd Division consists of soldiers from all 48 states making up the mainland United States.
Ciel: Thank you Mr. Soviet.
Soviet nodded.
In the draft of 1917, a man from Tennessee
Overseas to the trenches he went, from the land of the free
Into war he brought two things along, a rifle and his faith
Join the ranks as a private, assigned to 328th
Cinder: A rifle and his faith? What does that mean Soviet~?
Soviet: Alvin York is a devout member of the Church of Christ in Christian Union.
Ruby: Christ? Christian Union?
Soviet: Sukin syn... Time to explain religions...
Timeskip
Glynda: So many religions...
Oobleck: We have so much to learn from Earth!
Ozpin: That is true.
Salem: No wonder why they act so differently from each other. Not just because of nations, but also because of religion.
There on that day, Alvin York
Entered the fray
Saving the day
82nd all the way
Arslan: Oh yeah, just like Maxwell said.
Reese: All The Way is their motto.
Into the fires of hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
Nobody said anything as they kept learning such as numbered hills having some importance or that the US is on the other side of the world.
When his faith has been put to the test, the call to arms he heeds
On the 8th of October he went, made a sergeant for his deeds
Fearless, leading the raid of the war, machinegun on the hill
Charge the enemy taking the prisoners, by power of his will
Weiss: Machinegun on the hill?
Blake: What did he do to it?
Soviet: Sergeant York had originally killed twenty German soldiers who were in the nest.
Coco: Twenty Germans, geez.
Fox: I do wonder what else happened in this forest.
There on that day, Sergeant York
Entered the fray
Saving the day
82nd all the way
Soon the beat of the song changed.
Salem: Oh~?
What Sergeant York achieved that day
Would echo to the USA
It's 82nd all the way
Death from above, what they now say
What Sergeant York achieved that day
Echoes from France to the USA
It's 82nd All the way
Death from above, what they now say
The guitar solo then started as people looked confused at the death from above.
Yang: Wait, they changed their motto in the future?
Soviet: Yes, the 82nd Infantry became the 82nd Airborne changing the motto to Death From Above.
Ozpin: Why did they change it?
Soviet: The 82nd had now changed focus from an infantry unit on the ground to being flown in by planes or helicopters.
Pyrrha: What's a helicopter?
Soviet: Just a future vehicle.
Port: I wonder what it looks like!
Soviet: Hm, all I can say is that the helicopters will assist with something in the future.
Soon everyone talked about the future trying to get the answer out of Soviet.
Ruby: Come oooooooon comrade! Tell us!
Soviet: I can't.
Mercury: C'mon dude say it!
Soviet: No.
With a few sighs every looked at the information given by the video.
"ALVIN YORK 1887-1964"
"HE BECAME THE MOST DECORATED SOLDIER IN THE AMERICAN ARMY"
Ruby: Wait really!?
Soviet: Da, at the end of the war, he had earned 9 awards.
Yang: Gee, talk about decorated.
Nebula: Definitely most decorated.
"FOR HIS EFFORTS IN THE GREAT WAR HE RECEIVED MEDALS FROM AMERICA, FRANCE, ITALY AND MONTENEGRO"
"WELL YORK, I HEAR YOU HAVE CAPTURED THE WHOLE GERMAN ARMY"
Ironwood: A little exaggeration.
Ozpin/Winter: Quite.
Weiss however was lost in a thought.
Weiss: 'Winter has been a lot more open... is... is it because of Admiral Anfangs...?'
"NO SIR, ONLY 132"
Emerald: That's... one way to stop the exaggeration...
"GENERAL JULIAN ROBERT LINDSAY ON ALVIN YORK"
Soon the lyrics began once more.
Into the fires of hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
Hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
The video then as usual ended as the next song appeared.
Soviet: Next song, Race To The Sea.
Ozpin: What is this race to the sea?
Soviet: The Race to the Sea was a series of military maneuvers and battles that took place during World War I on the Western Front. It occurred in the early stages of the war in 1914 and marked the failed attempts by both the Allied and Central Powers to outflank each other by advancing to the North Sea coast of Belgium and northern France.
Oobleck: Fascinating!
Soviet: As such, this is a song about the decision from King Albert the 1st of Belgium during the war, his decision was to flood the last part of Belgium by opening the floodgates, canals, and dikes to flood rivers and with the help of water, prevent all of Belgium to fall into German hands.
Salem: So, he decided to flood his country to keep the remains, correct~?
Soviet nodded.
Ozpin: Sounds like a tough choice for the king.
Soviet: Da, but now they are repairing from the flood. Now let us begin.
Meanwhile Soviet could feel a little shaking above him.
Ruby: I'm excited!
Soviet then smiled.
We're keeping the kingdom free
Soon the intro started as usual as some people were surprised by the sudden entrance.
Yang: An explosive start!
Soviet then heard a groan from above and around the theater.
Ruby: Was that supposed to be a pun?
Yang: Maybe, maybe not~
Ruby then groaned once more.
As an archduke falls and the battle horn calls, our lives would never be the same
We were looking down the barrel of a gun
Now the war has come and the battle's begun, we are desperate and overrun
To the war drum we'll be marching until it's done
Nebula: I remember Captain Newport explaining the events of World War 1, so this was how Belgium defended itself?
Soviet nodded.
Lead the way, we will follow into the fray
We will hold the line we will not be led astray
Winter: Yes, do not be led astray from the big picture.
A few agreements went out.
For king and for country, we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
The last piece of Belgium's free, we're keeping a sliver
A cog in the war machine, October of 1914
Brawnz: So this... Yser is where they flooded, I'm guessing?
Soviet: Da.
Nadir: How much of the country did they keep?
Soviet: About 5%.
A few signs of shock and understanding were around the theater.
Ruby then looked down.
Ruby: Only 5%!?
Weiss: Well, it did say they were keeping a sliver of the country.
As our foe draws forth we are moving on north, we will never let them have it all
There's a price for freedom paid by Belgium's sons
They may take our towns, they may conquer our grounds we'll defend the nation and the crown
We'll uphold our independence with our guns
Ozpin: Yes, that outflanking maneuver. Soviet talked about. Keep moving north.
Robyn had a different question though.
Robyn: What was the price for freedom...?
Soviet: It's estimated that 3,500 Belgium men were killed and 15,000 were wounded.
Fiona: Oh my...
May M: That's... a lot of casualties...
Soviet: Da, but some will die for freedom.
All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray
For king and for country, we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
The last piece of Belgium's free, we're keeping a sliver
A cog in the war machine, October of 1914
Soon the traditional guitar solo started.
Jaune: I will always love these guitar solos!
Nora: I know right! These are amazing!
Pyrrha in the meanwhile was just sitting next to Jaune enjoying the fact, he was enjoying it himself.
The beat of the song then changed.
Cinder: Oh~?
See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
See a king and a soldier, fighting shoulder to shoulder
Salem: And what does this mean~?
Soviet: King Albert was a king who fought with his soldier's on the frontlines.
He overruled his commanders, he made a last stand in Flanders
We see our king and a soldier, they're fighting shoulder to shoulder
To keep the last piece of Belgium free
Ironwood: That does make sense.
Ozpin: Yes, it is like a member of the council in charge of the hunters at the front.
But Ruby in the meanwhile had another question and looked down.
Ruby: What's Flander's?
Soviet: Belgium is divided by two regions, Flanders and Wallonia.
Ruby: Oh! Thank you!
Soviet nodded.
All the way, on to triumph or to judgement day
We will follow and we will not be led astray
For king and for country, we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be, the end of the race to the sea
The last piece of Belgium's free, we're keeping a sliver
A cog in the war machine, October of 1914
For king and for country we are flooding the river
Our stand at Yser will be the end of the race to the sea
We're free
For king and for country we are flooding the river
No more of our country lost, the line will be held at all cost!
Soviet: And that is the end comrades. Any questions?
A hand then shot up.
Soviet: Da?
May Z: Are we allowed to have a hint to the future like you said with the attack on Fort Faunus?
Everyone looked at Soviet who had his hand rubbing his chin deciding.
Soviet: Hm... alright, two things.
Reese: What is it?
Soviet: Somebody here will receive the Medal of Honor.
This perked the student's interest as Soviet gave the last spoiler.
Soviet: Atlas will be... changed
Those who were from Atlas looked mortified before understanding the circumstances.
Ironwood: Will... will I be rescued?
Soviet stared at Ironwood with a grin.
Soviet: You will, but I won't say by who, or how.
Ironwood nodded, as long as he knew he was rescued he'll be ok.
Soviet: Now, next song, Lost Battalion.
Before anyone could express interest, Soviet added in the facts.
Soviet: The Lost Battalion consisted of nine companies of the United States' 77th Division, nicknamed the 'Liberty Division' during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in 1918.
Winter: Nine companies... lost in the Argonne...
Soviet: Even though these 550-575 brave men were completely surrounded by the German Army and subjected to friendly artillery fire, they kept on fighting for a week until they were relieved.
Ironwood: Why were they hit with friendly fire!?
Soviet: I believe the artillery batteries didn't know it was friendlies and thought they were Germans, anyways, of the over 500-plus soldiers who entered the Argonne Forest, only 194 walked out unscathed. The rest were killed, missing, captured, or wounded.
Yang: Not to sound rude or anything, but 194 being unscathed is actually pretty impressive.
Ruby: I know right!? How were you able to not get hurt after being hit with friendly and enemy fire!
Soviet: And fun fact, the Army strained to mobilize. The 77th was a battalion part of the 1st Marine Division. The lost part of that Battalion consisted of soldiers from the 1st to the 9th Marine brigade.
Arslan: So, some marines related to the Lost Battalion?
Soviet: Yes, more specifically the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines.
Yang: Cool! That's our Battalion!
Soviet the cut Yang off.
Soviet: There's more.
Reese: Really? What is it?
Nora then had an insight.
Nora: Our Company was there, weren't they!
Everyone looked at Nora confused before Soviet confirmed it.
Soviet: Yes, Company K specifically was among the units that made contact with the Lost Battalion and played a crucial part in the rescue.
Soon bits of pride filled some of the students as Oobleck scribbled back on his notepad going through a whole page.
Soviet: Now, let us begin.
Soon a loud strike was heard with eerie sounds.
I remember the Argonne, 1918.
Salem: What is this?
The sounds of that battle still haunt me to this day.
The machine gun fire from enemy lines.
The sickening sound of a bayonet tearing through human flesh.
Ruby: Oh yeah... Remember our first bayonet charge...
Yang: I know right... brutal
Everyone started to then hear echoes of machine gun fire and the stabbing of bayonets.
The soldier next to me firing his sidearm in desperation.
Soon the sound of a pistol going off in the theater was heard.
All these sounds still echo in my mind, and as conducted by death himself it all comes together as music.
A rhythm of death
A symphony of war
Ozpin: Seems they have seen some... horrifying things in there.
Glynda: That they have, to call it a rhythm or symphony in of itself...
Far from their land as they made their stand
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
Nora: Woooooow! It's like all of the sounds create the beat of this song.
Ren: Nora, that doesn't seem-
Soviet: It is.
The students stared at Soviet with varying expressions.
Weiss: You have to be lying right!?
Soviet: Nyet, the lead singer himself confirmed it.
Blake: I... wow...
Oobleck: What isn't fascinating on Earth!?
Oobleck then wrote more down.
1918 the Great War rages on
A battalion is lost in the Argonne
Under fire there's nothing they can do
There's no way they can get a message through
Glynda: Why weren't able to reach their allies?
Soviet: During these times, radios weren't really a thing, even so they were pretty bad and not effective. So, the only way to send messages were through pigeons, which were shot down.
Glynda then whispered to herself.
Glynda: I guess that explains Mr. Sampson's swearing when we met the marines...
Ruby: So, that's why Rudy was cursing so much at the radio.
Suffer heavy losses as the battle carries on
Liberty Division standing strong
Nora: Stay strong! K Company is coming!
Far from their land as they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die and the stakes are high
They live or they die, there's no time for goodbye
Weapon in hand as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply, they would rather die
Broke through the blockade, they were finally saved
Nora: Yeah!
While Nora did a celebration, Ren tried his best to calm her down.
Ren: Nora, calm down. We're still in the theater.
Nora: but our company saved them!
Ren: I know, but calm down.
Nora: Ok Renny...!
Friendly fire, munitions running low
The supplies, they were dropped upon their foe
Bolin: Wait what!?
Soviet: Da, the allies tried to resupply the Battalion while trying to find them, only for it to land with the Germans.
Ozpin: That... is very unfortunate.
1918 the war still rages on
The battalion still trapped in the Argonne
Chose not to surrender, they chose victory or defeat
Fallen brothers resting by their feet
Ruby: Some may be dead in that timeline, but I guess they have another chance...?
Soviet nodded, raising his hand up patting Ruby on the back.
Soviet: True comrade, some may live, some may die. But some are given a true second chance at life.
Ruby nodded.
The guitar solo then started before everyone just enjoyed it.
Far from their land as they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die and the stakes are high
Live or die, who can tell there's no goodbye
With a weapon in hand as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply, they would rather die
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
Suffered heavy losses through the Great War they stood strong
But the memory of the fallen still lives on
Far from their land as they made their stand
A disregarded demand
It's surrender or die and the stakes are high
They live or they die, there's no time for goodbye
Weapon in hand as they made their stand
Still disregarding demand
They would never comply, they would rather die
Broke through the blockade, they were finally saved
Soviet: And that's the end comrades.
The students who were now filled with a good amount of pride calmed down from being excited.
Soviet: Next song and last song of World War 1, the Valley of Death.
Oobleck: And this is about what!?
Soviet: This song is about the Battles of Doiran in 1916, 1917 and 1918, where Bulgarian troops stood against a larger invading British force with other troops from Greece and France. Due to strong command of General Vladimir Vazov and strong fortifications, they were able to hold the line.
Ironwood: They attacked 3 times!?
Soviet: Da. Any questions?
Oobleck: Yes! You said Second Balkan Wars back with Ms. Savic! Was this place attacked!?
Soviet: Yes, 1913 in the Second Balkan Wars, the Battle of Doiran 1913 was fought by the Bulgarians and Greeks.
Oobleck: Fascinating!
Qrow: What is with these people and repeating an attack?
Raven: 'It's pointless. Then again...'
Raven looked at her hands to see she was still in cuffs with a sigh.
Oobleck then wrote down the information.
Ruby: Can we start now?
Soviet: Da, let us begin.
Soon the music started out a little intense.
Yang: Ooh! This sounds good!
Dug in deep, equipped for attack
Outnumbered, determined to win
Double trench lines that won't give in
They're prepared, let the battle begin
Ruby: They got trenches up it seems.
Here again they've done this before
A lesson that they should have learned by now
Reinforced with new men and guns
Who are ready for death when it comes
Ozpin: Yes, they should have just given up at a point, but it seems they would've won in the future.
United they're strong, united they're holding the line
The Valley of Death, awaiting the British as they come their way
Their attack is coming, fight them back
Bulgarians holding the line
Facing wave after wave, will never surrender
Again, again, again, again
They attack, Bulgaria held them back
Unleash their counter barrage
Let it rain, artillery pounding the trenches
No surrender, fight them until the end
Jaune: Nice with the 'again' part.
Pyrrha: Did you notice something Jaune?
Jaune: Yeah, when he repeated again, he said it 4 times. The same amount of times Doiran was attacked.
Soviet: And once again you are right Jaune.
Jaune smiled before letting the song continue.
Fortified, and made to defy
Protected by wires and guns
Troops as far as the eye can see
They advance under Vazov's command
Ironwood: This Vazov seems to be a great general.
Row on row, as they come from below
Twice they attack, twice they're beaten back
Every time they try, they will die
Their line of defense is still intact
Arslan: I wonder why they kept attacking?
Soviet: Well, The British and their allies attacked Doiran three times in World War I because it was a strategically important location in the Balkans.
Robyn: How so?
Soviet: They wanted to capture it to control key routes, put pressure on Bulgaria, and coordinate their efforts with other offensives. While the first two attempts didn't succeed, the third one did, helping the Allies win in that region.
Fiona: They really plan out everything...
Soviet: Da, Terrans want the best situation... usually.
For white, green and red, for the nation they're fighting for
The British are done, three times the defense of Doiran has been won
Their attack is coming, fight them back
Bulgarians holding the line
Facing wave after wave, will never surrender
Again, again, again, again
They attack, Bulgaria held them back
Unleash their counter barrage
Let it rain, artillery pounding the trenches
No surrender, fight them until the end
Soon the slow guitar started to pick up as everyone as usual enjoyed it as Oobleck, Ironwood, Qrow and Ozpin were discussing about other details.
Ironwood: So, backup plans?
Soviet: You guys don't use any?
Ozpin: We do, but that's usually depending on the situation.
Oobleck nodded.
Soviet: Ok, what about escorting special cargo or a special person?
Ironwood and Qrow looked to Ozpin who looked a little worried.
Oobleck: What do you mean?
Soviet: You should always protect the important cargo or person. You don't know if anyone knows they are being moved and then try to attack.
Qrow: Yeah... sounds like a good idea.
Ironwood, Qrow and Ozpin started to sweat more considering they didn't do so with a certain maiden.
For white, green and red, for the nation they're fighting for
The British are done, three times the defense of Doiran has been won
Their attack is coming, fight them back
Bulgarians holding the line
Facing wave after wave, will never surrender
Again, again, again, again
They attack, Bulgaria held them back
Unleash their counter barrage
Let it rain, artillery pounding the trenches
No surrender, fight them until the end
Soviet: And that's the end comrades! We are now entering World War 2!
Ruby: WHOO! Can we start the song already!
Reese: Yeah! I want to find out who or what's next!
Soviet: Alright, next up, Soldier of 3 Armies.
This picked up everyone's interest, more specifically Ironwood and Winter.
Winter: 3 armies!?
Soviet: Da, the story of Lauri Allan Törni is quite captivating. During his career as a soldier he served in 3 different armies, reaching the rank of officer in all 3 and was awarded with medals in all of them.
Ironwood and Winter looked extremely surprised.
Soviet: He was sometimes described as inhuman while superior in battle, this man started out in his homeland Finland, fought his way through WW2 on both the Finnish and German sides, and then ended up dead in Vietnam, but at the time was a special operations soldier bearing the name of Larry Thorne.
Ironwood and Winter were now shocked after hearing he was a special ops soldier. Meanwhile everyone looked excited to listen to this song.
Ruby: If he was able to do that, then this song is going to be great!
Weiss: Yes, and it seems Finland produces strong soldiers. First Simo Häyhä and now Lauri Törni.
Jaune: Yeah, the Finns really fight to the bitter bone.
Meanwhile Blake had a different reaction.
Blake: What part of the German army was Lauri Torni in?
Soviet: The Waffen-SS.
A few gasps were heard as Soviet started to explain the story of Lauri Torni.
Qrow: Ok then!
Soviet: Listen, Lauri Torni was-
Timeskip
Soviet: We all good now comrades?
Nebula: Yeah... can we start now?
Soviet: Da.
Soon drums were heard followed quickly by the guitars.
Penny: Here we go!
Started out as a reserve,
Soon promoted well deserved
Winter: I am curious on what he did for him to be promoted.
And the legend has begun
With a bounty on his head,
The Red Army wants him dead
Soviet enemy number one
Everyone's eyes went wide.
Ruby: Wait, the White Death wasn't the number one enemy!?
Soviet: Nyet, that would be Mr. Torni. With a bounty of 3 million Finnish marks.
Weiss: H-how much is that in Lien!?
Soviet: Hm... I'm not sure, but I would say around doubled in Lien... probably.
Some people's faces went white or had their jaws drop.
Qrow: Well, damn. That man is a huge problem.
Cross of Mannerheim!
Addicted to the war game
Never ending flame
Victory reclaimed
Ironwood: What's... what's the Cross of Mannerheim?
Soviet: The Cross of Mannerheim or Mannerheim Cross is the highest military award in Finnish history.
Ironwood and Winter looked shocked with pale or excited faces were around them as the video the continued.
Oh, we remember,
We remember, we remember!
Nora: Yeah!
Shout! Lauri Törni's name,
A soldier of 3 armies knows the game
Deeds that echo from the past
Rise! from beyond your grave,
Son of Finland and a green beret
May you rest in peace at last
Lauri Allan Törni
Salem: What is a Green Beret~?
Soviet: The United States Army Special Forces are commonly known as the Green Berets, after their iconic hats.
Coco: Cool.
Crossed the water a new start,
War still beating in his heart
A new legend has been born
Started out as a reserve
Soon promoted well deserved
Changed his name to Larry Thorne
Velvet: Why did he change his name?
Soviet: Lauri Torni anglicized his name when he came to the United States.
Ruby: Angeli... angleci... uh...
Soviet: Angl-icized.
Ruby: Angl...icized.
Soviet: There you go!
Ruby did a small celebration before asking one more question.
Ruby: What does it mean?
Soviet: it means to make something more English or to adapt it to English language.
Ruby: Ooooohhhh.
Cross of Mannerheim!
Addicted to the war game
Never ending flame
Victory reclaimed
Oh, we remember,
We remember, we remember!
Shout! Lauri Törni's name,
A soldier of 3 armies knows the game
Deeds that echo from the past
Rise! from beyond your grave,
Son of Finland and a green beret
May you rest in peace at last
Soon the solo started as everyone rocked out with it.
Nora: Whooo!
Ruby: This is so good!
Soon the beat changed.
Salem: Oh~?
From the Finnish lakes
Into Germany and USA
All the wars he came across
Cross of Mannerheim, an Iron Cross,
A Bronze Star, Purple Heart
One Distinguished Flying Cross
Once again Ironwood and Winter were left shocked.
Ironwood: Are... those awards?
Soviet: Da, Larry Thorne or Lauri Torni, had received the Mannerheim Cross, the Iron Cross, Legion of Merit, A Distinguished Flying Cross, a Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts.
Soon people looked shocked from the amount of awards before regaining themselves.
Weiss: I-Impressive... but we do know some others...
Yang: True, but for those awards across 3 different countries being an officer is still impressive.
Weiss: True.
Shout! Lauri Törni's name,
A soldier of 3 armies knows the game
Deeds that echo from the past
Rise! from beyond your grave,
Son of Finland and a green beret
May you rest in peace at last
Lauri Allan Törni
The video then ended with some clapping.
Ozpin: That was an interesting story to say the least.
Salem then glared at Ozpin before agreeing.
Salem: I sadly admit, he is right.
Yang then leaned over to Blake, whispering.
Yang: Do we even know who she is? We heard that weird skinny guy from before calling her goddess.
Blake shrugged.
Blake: I don't know, but she seems to have bad relations with Ozpin.
Meanwhile Soviet had clapped his hands.
Soviet: Alright comrades, we have 3 more songs before you leave forever.
Ruby: Waaaah!? We won't see you again!?
Soviet looked up to see the slightly sad Ruby.
Soviet: Nyet, sorry mini comrade.
Ruby: Aahhhh... I will miss you!
Soviet: Don't worry mini comrade, you may not see me. But I will be there, just watching from above. After all I am essentially God.
Ozpin and Salem eyed Soviet.
Soviet: Though... I'm more like a watcher of the world.
Ruby: Really...?
Soviet: Yes. So, I still technically be with you.
Ruby: Ok...
Soviet: Good, next song. Smoking Snakes!
Octavia: What is it about this time?
Soviet: Well, for context the term "When pig's fly" is similar to another version of it.
Gwen: And that is?
Soviet: "It's more likely for a snake to smoke a pipe than for the Brazilian expeditionary force to go to the front and fight."
Qrow: And what about it?
Ozpin then guessed.
Ozpin: And I am guessing these Brazilian's did go fight?
Soviet: Da, in 1944 the snake did smoke and over 25,000 Brazilians left to join WW2.
Salem: More context please~
Soviet nodded.
Soviet: Located in the mountains and heavily defended by the Germans as a last bastion to block the advance of allied troops in the direction of the Po Valley, on 14 April 1945, Montese became the stage for the most arduous and bloody battle of Brazilian troops in Italy.
Dew: Almost the end of the war.
Soviet: Three Brazilian soldiers on patrol were attacked by German forces. Outnumbered, the patrol was ordered to surrender. The three men took cover and opened fire on the enemy until running out of ammunition. Not satisfied, they proceeded to pitch their bayonets and advanced against the Germans and consequently were fired upon and shot dead.
Qrow: Heh, crazy people.
Cinder: Pathetic. Such a des-
Soviet: In recognition of the bravery of those soldiers and in tribute to their memory, the Germans buried them and placed a cross with the inscription "Drei Brasilianischen Helden" or Three Brazilian Heroes.
Some were shocked, some were happy they were honored.
Soviet: And this is the three's song, now let us begin.
We remember, no surrender
Heroes of our century
Fox: Well, hello!
Three men stood strong and they held out for long
Going into the fight, to their death that awaits
Crazy or brave, will it end in the grave?
As they're giving their lives as their honor dictates
Mercury: Well, seems they upheld their honor.
Far, far from home, to a war
Fought on foreign soil and
Far, far from known, tell their tale,
Their forgotten story
Cobras Fumantes, eterna é sua vitória
Oobleck: Once again! Seems they were forgotten but their memory is now uncovered! But what does the last line mean!?
Soviet: "Smoking Snakes, your victory is eternal" They died, but they will be remembered forever by the people of Brazil.
Ruby: Yeah!
Rise, from the blood of your heroes
You were the ones who refused to surrender
The three, rather die than to flee, know that your memory
will be sung for a century
Ruby and a few others were being inspired just from the song.
Nebula: Never surrender...
Reese: Never forget.
Three took the blow, while impressing their foe
Throwing dice with their lives as they're paying the price
Sent to raise hell, hear the toll of the bell
It is calling for you as the Wehrmacht devised
Weiss: These Wehrmacht soldiers I say are good people.
Yang: I know right! Honoring the people you had just killed!
Jaune: Some people are good some are bad, that's just how life is.
Said Jaune with a shrug.
Sent over seas to be cast into fire
Fought for a purpose with pride and desire
Blood of the brave they would give to inspire
Cobras Fumantes, your memory lives
Sent over seas to be cast into fire
Fought for a purpose with pride and desire
Blood of the brave they would give to inspire
Cobras Fumantes, your memory lives
Arslan: Smoking Snakes, your victory is eternal...
Cobras Fumantes, eterna é sua vitória
Rise, from the blood of your heroes
You were the ones who refused to surrender
The three, rather die than to flee, know that your memory
will be sung for a century
We remember, no surrender
Heroes of our century
Ruby: I... wow...
Everyone was stunned at learning the story of the brave Brazilians.
Yatsu: What were their names?
Everyone looked at Soviet.
Soviet: Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, Geraldo Baeta da Cruz, and Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza.
Qrow then raised his flask.
Qrow: In honor of the dead.
He then took a huge swig from it.
Soviet: Now, any questions?
Silence.
Soviet: Alright, next up. Resist and Bite!
Bolin: Context?
Soviet: The Chasseurs Ardennais was a small Belgian unit of soldiers who were to defend the borders along the K-W Line in May 1940.
Robyn: Another song Belgium?
Soviet: Da. As the German army approached the unit, instead following orders to retreat, they defended the border at all costs. This was due to a communication failure. Speaking on the Chasseurs Ardennais, Panzer division commander Erwin Rommel said: "They are not men; they are green wolves."
Ruby: Wait even the Ghost Division was held back!?
Soviet: Da, the Belgian soldiers honored their orders and held the line with only 40 rifles.
Yang: How long did they hold them back then?
Soviet: 18 days.
Raven's eyes widen with everyone else's.
Students: 18 days!?
Raven: 'How...'
Soviet: Fun fact, I do not know if this is true. But someone told me in this Rommel had called for reinforcements against them.
Yang: Wait seriously!?
Soviet: Da, I do not know how true it is. But if so, that should show Belgian strength. Anyways, let us begin.
Soon fast guitar strumming was heard with the beat of a drum.
War is coming swiftly
The border is closing in
We're a company of soldiers
We're 40 rifles strong
Qrow: I still can't believe it was only 40 guys.
All alone
Stand alone
Ruby: With no way to contact HQ...
Ardenner ground is burning
And Rommel is at hand
As the Blitzkrieg's pushing harder
The war is all around!
Weiss: That Blitzkrieg strategy was genius, I will have to admit.
All around
Hold your ground!
Jaune: Soldiers hold their ground and when nothing is left, they go in and charge most of the time it seems.
Fight for 18 days of battles
No odds are on our side
Few will fight for all
Until the bullets are gone
Nadir: Yup, that was a problem holding ground with no contact with friendlies.
Reese: Limited ammo.
We! We will resist and bite!
Bite hard, cause we are all in sight
We! We take up arms and fight!
Fight hard, resist and do what's right!
Nora: Yeah! Hold back those Nazi's!
Ren: Nora, remember not all of them were Nazi's.
Nora: I know! And you know what I mean!
Ren just sighed.
No matter our fighting
Their numbers will still count
We're outgunned and few in numbers
We're doomed to flag or fail
We fought hard
Held our guard
Pyrrha: Yes, they had to break though Belgium so increasing numbers from Germany was bound to happen.
Jaune nodded in agreement.
But when captured by the Axis
And forced to tell the truth
We will tell them with a smile
We will surprise them with the laugh
We are all
We were all
Ruby: Why would they laugh after being captured!?
Soviet looked up and gave the answer.
Soviet: When finally, they were captured, and their captors asked them "where are the others?" they simply laughed and answered. "There are no others, we are all!".
Penny: So the Belgian's did so well at holding, the Germans thought there were more than there actually was?
Soviet: Correct!
We were told to hold the border
And that is what we did
Honored were our orders
In despite of our foe
Winter: They truly upheld their honor didn't they.
Weiss: Seems so sister.
We! We will resist and bite!
Bite hard, cause we are all in sight
We! We take up arms and fight!
Fight hard, resist and do what's right!
Soon a big tone switch happened.
Gloria fortis miles
The Wehrmacht's closing in
Ruby: Big tone switch!
Yang: I know right!
Fox: But what did the first line mean?
Soviet: The glory of a strong soldier.
Fox: Thank you.
Soviet nodded.
Adversor et admorsus
The Boar against the Eagle
Fox: And that?
Soviet: I believe it means 'Against the Bite.'
Coco: So, the glory of a strong soldier against the bite?
Soviet nodded.
Coco: Huh...
Gloria fortis miles
The Wehrmacht's closing in
Adversor et admorsus
The Boar against the Eagle
And for the second to last time, the guitar solo played.
Ruby looked down to Soviet.
Ruby: I'll miss you comrade.
Soviet: Me too min comrade. But I will be with you.
Ruby smiled.
Ruby: Right!
We! We will resist and bite!
Bite hard, cause we are all in sight
We! We take up arms and fight!
Fight hard, resist and do what's right!
The video then came to an end.
Soviet: Alright comrades, it is time for the last song.
Soon everyone prepared themselves.
Soviet: Next, Coat of Arms.
Coco: What is it about?
Soviet: The Greco-Italian war.
Ozpin: You can explain the whole thing if you wish.
Soviet: The Greco-Italian war opposed Italy and Greece from the 28th of October 1940 until the 23rd of April 1941. The campaign's objective was to establish a Greek puppet state which would allow the Italian annexation of the Ionian, Sporades and the Cyclades islands.
Everyone's heads nodded.
Soviet: On the 28th of October, the Italian forces invaded Greece in several columns coming from Albania. On the 3rd November, the Italian spearhead was surrounded from all sides and reinforcements were unable to reach the cut-off Italian forces.
Oobleck: Fascinating!
Soviet: The Italian defeat was followed by the Greek counter offensive which ended on the 6th of April 1941 was called the "first axis setback of the entire war."
Yang: Geez, only after a few years caused a setback for the Axis...
Soviet: After reinforcing the front to 28 divisions, the Italians conducted a spring offensive in 1941 which also failed. During the Battle of Greece, Greek and British forces in northern Greece were overwhelmed by the Germans, which advanced rapidly into Greece. The Italian army suffered more than 154,000 casualties and the Greek army suffered about 90,000 losses.
Salem: 'Hm, almost 300,000 dead. How pointless.'
Soviet: Now let us begin.
Soon and for the last time, the song started.
At dawn envoy arrives
Morning of October 28th
"No Day" proven by deeds
Descendants of Sparta, Athens and Crete
Yang: Oooh! Greeks are Spartan Descendants!?
Soviet: Da.
Yang: Cool!
Look now, ready to fight
Enemies charge from the hills
To arms, facing defeat,
There's no surrender, there's no retreat
Fiona: I thought Italy and Greece were separated by the sea?
Soviet: They were, but Italy had conquered Albania and had an access to Greece from the north.
Fiona: Oh...
Time after time, force the enemies back to the line
Mercury: That means...?
Soviet: The Italian forces failed to succeed in their mission. With so, the Greco-Italian War ended with a Greek victory.
Ozpin: Hm...
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading "Freedom or Death"
Blood of king Leonidas
Joanna: What's Hellas and Leonidas?
Soviet: Hellas is the Greek name for Greece as in Greece they are called the Hellenic Republic.
Joanna nodded as she was about to question about Leonidas.
Soviet: Leonidas however was the most famous king of Sparta, one of the city-states that would go on to form as modern-day Greece.
Ruby/Nora: Cool! He was a king!
Air raid pounding the land
Bombers are flying both day and night
Endure six days of rain
Dropped by invaders, bomb raid in vain
Glynda: Wait... did... did the Greeks refer to the bombs as rain?
Soviet nodded.
Soviet: The Italians bombed the Greeks for 6 days straight to which they referred to it as rain.
Everyone looked shocked, how did they endure the 6 days of bombs. Now was artillery but now bombers in the future.
Strike hard, the tables have turned
Drive them back over the hills
At arms, just like before
Soldiers, civilians, Hellas at war
By their own hand, forced the enemy out of their land
Ruby: Yes! Push out the Italians!
Ruby had shouted out with others.
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading "Freedom or Death"
Blood of king Leonidas
Just like their ancestors ages ago
Fought in the face of defeat
Those three hundred men left a pride to uphold
Freedom or death in the fight
Soviet then gave some information as the solo played.
Port: Three Hundred Men?
Soviet: This was an event to which 300 Spartans and 4,000- 7,000 non-Spartan Greek soldiers fought 120,000 to 300,000 Persian's.
Port: Impressive! How long did they fight?
Soviet: About 3 days or so.
Everyone gasped learning the odds were stacked against them but were able to hold for almost 3 days.
Glynda: It seems they really do have pride to uphold.
Then now again blood of heroes saving their land!
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading "Freedom or Death"
Blood of king Leonidas
Call to arms, banners fly in the wind
For the glory of Hellas
Coat of arms reading "Freedom or Death"
Blood of king Leonidas
The video then came to an end with a sad Ruby.
Ruby: It's over... that means...
Soviet: I know.
Soviet then grabbed his ushanka.
Ruby: Soviet?
Soviet: Take this mini comrade and remember, sometimes your friends are family and to never stray from your path.
Soviet then placed the ushanka and placed it on Ruby's head.
Ruby: Thank you...
Soviet: Da, goodbye everyone! And always remember! Long live the motherland!
Soon everyone was consumed in a bright light as Soviet was the only one left.
I hope you enjoyed the last Sabaton related chapter. I will be taking a small break since I have been working on something's personally, but always remember!
LONG LIVE THE MOTHERLAND!
