I Don't Understand~ the short love story of him and I

I got the a text from him tonight and it says he isn't being fair to me that makes me start to panic and my stomach turns a little bit. I'm not really sure what is going on so I call him. He says he is going through so much and he is stressed which isn't fair to me because he isn't able to focus on us and he thinks he needs to take a break but he is still going to talk to me. I don't understand why a break is the solution and why he's shutting me out.
