they were, indeed, having fun back at their dorm.taking pictures in their party glasses and decorating a plain store-bought cake with way too much frosting were their two moat important birthday traditions- and ofcourse, ever since seorin got her pet toad, giving him tiny hats also became a birthday tradition, seorin's favorite one.
another one was singing the happy birthday song to the birthday girl, except they'd only sing 'happy' and filled in the rest of the lyrics with silence.
it was all things they did over the years that piled up to make these traditions, and doing them made the group of 5 look back in time and upon their growth as friends.
when the night ended, the all shared one large blanket preserved only to be used on a birthday, and cuddled up on the couch as they watched shrek and talked about their feelings.
"i love spending time with you guys," sighed heejin, playing with meihui's hair, "not only when it's my birthday but like every single day. I'm so blessed to have you all"
"you know, you're the root of our friendship. if it wasn't for you, we all wouldn't have known eachother. me and mei would probably have gone back to our countries because we'd have no reason to stay. you're the one who brought us all together, heejin. thank you," the japanese said, leaning hee head on heejin's shoulder
it was true.
heejin was the one who connected everyone in the first year of high school. she became friends with seorin first due to their mothers being close. then she met hyemin in middle school and became friends with her instantly. then yasuko joined in the first year of high school and heejin was always welcoming of her, helping her adjust to the new environment. the next year when seorin shifted from Jeju, she was introduced to the group and when meihui moved from china, heejin was the one who helped her around the same way she had done with yasuko.
"speaking of our countries," meihui sat up, "I've been hiding something from you guys for a while now"
everyone turned to her with worried looks on their faces, "whats up mei?"
the chinese heaved a sigh, "i just.. miss my family a lot.. i kinda wanna go back but at the same time we have university and I can't just leave my studies here, you know?"
"i can't say i don't feel the same.. its been so long since i met my family too." yasuko looked down on her lap, "but there's really not much we can do about it right now, right?"
the three Korean girls exchanged a look, concerned for their friends. ofcourse they were also away from their families while at university, but meihui and yasuko were in a completely different country. they hadn't even gone back to visit them once since they never got the chance.
"it's okay, though. you guys are just like family, so.. it's not that big of a problem, don't worry," meihui patted hyemin's shoulder, noticing the concern on her face
"are you guys sure?"
"a hundred percent. now, do we have leftover cake?"
