(time skip~)

Christmas came and went rather quickly for what Japan was used to. There was the annual Christmas breakfast with her brothers and family members, then the opening of presents by the tree in the warm glow of a roaring fire in the fireplace, then savoring some peppermint-flavored hot cocoa while enjoying a movie.

Her favorite gifts she received were some new sweaters, including a beautiful dark green one with golden hoop earrings to match. She also received some new mangas to read and a few more bits and pieces of stationery to add to her collection.

The day after, she woke up later in the afternoon to Taiwan yelling from downstairs: "Hey Japan! Your friends are here!" She got up hesitantly. Thinking of her messy appearance, she changed as quickly as she could and hurried downstairs. Japan opened the door to find Belarus and Bulgaria standing with arms full of gift bags. "Hey girls! Come in."

"Hiii!" Bela grinned. Bulgaria was directly behind her, and she exchanged a nod with Taiwan. "You guys can come upstairs with me—I've got some gifts for you two as well!" Japan said with a smile.

Once they were they all settled, presents were opened. Japan received three brand-new mangas, a few pairs of earrings, bags of her favorite spicy chips, strawberry candies, and a bracelet. "This is too much!" She laughed, presenting all the jewelry to them. "No it isn't," Bela smirked, admiring the fabric of the dress Japan had gotten her. For Bulgaria, Japan had bought a calligraphy set.  She had also purchased candy and snacks and gift cards for them as well. Bulgaria was toying with the brush and the ink when she suddenly grinned widely.

"How was that kiss, Japan?"

"Yeahhh..." Belarus chimed in. Japan turned away, pretending to be busy with cleaning up the wrapping paper. She hurriedly stuffed it into the trash before facing them again.

"Your face is as red as that sweater you're wearing," Bela teased. "That good, huh?"

Japan flopped onto her bed. "Maybe." came the reply. "America said he saw the whole thing," Bulgaria began. "He said that he pulled you close, and then grabbed your face, and then he also said you guys started kissing with tongue—"

Japan sat up and glared. "No we didn't!! What does he know? He was drunk anyway. He is the one getting crazy with Russia," "Are you sure that's all that happened?" Bela asked. She raised her eyebrows. Japan sighed, lying back down on the bed.

"Yep."  She decided not to fight it.

"By the way—do either of you know what's up with Ukraine? Like—where she went?"

"No..." Bela said, shaking her head. She eyed Bulgaria, who shrugged. "My guess is that she went to her vacation house. Her family is loaded."
That made sense. Where else could she really go? "Canada seemed relieved for her coming back anyway," Japan added. "Did you also notice how they disappeared at America's Christmas party?"

"They? You mean...Canada and...Ukraine?"
Bela questioned, her eyebrows furrowing. "I thought they weren't an item anymore." "Well, they are. I went upstairs with South to get a laptop charger and I saw—"

Japan halted herself.

This was a big secret, that most likely only South, Australia, and the two that did it knew. She could either sabotage the Ukraine situation and make it worse, or could keep the peace. "Saw what?" Bulgaria asked, leaning forward. "Never mind. All that matters is, we got the charger and life went on."

"You seem...out of it, Japan. What's wrong? Are you missin' your man?" Bela was back on her teasing streak. Japan rolled over in bed. "No, I'm just really shocked the situation. That's all."

"So are we." Bulgaria nodded.

(time skip, hehe~)

The day before school started back, Japan got a call from South.

"Hey darling! How's everything going?" he greeted brightly. Japan could hear the smile in his voice. "I'm good! What's up?" "Do you wanna go out tonight? America and Russia want to do a double-date." "Sure! That sounds fun." "Sweet! Can you meet me at America's at 5:00?" "Mhm!"
"Okay, love you! See you then!" Spurn said happily. "Love you!" Japan returned, then hurried to her closet.

She realized she had forgotten to ask where they were going, but because they were going with America and Russia, she figured it wouldn't be too fancy. She decided to wear her new green sweater and some of the jewelry from Bela and Bulgaria. It matched the outfit beautifully.

Then, taking the stairs two at a time, she snatched up her keys and raced to America's house. South was already there and he wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug. Russia was leaning against America's fancy sports car, looking at his phone.

To Japan's dismay, Canada was at the door of the house. He gave her an awkward wave, and she returned it. "Move out of the way, bro!" America boomed, bumping his brother's waist with his own. "I've got a date with a handsome fella!"

Canada rolled his eyes, and Russia glanced up from his phone with a tiny smile. "We're driving separate to give those two lovebirds some privacy,"
South whispered to Japan, nodding his head at them. America was swooning already, batting his eyes at his boyfriend. Russia just smiled softly, looking down with admiration.

"Where are we going?" She asked South. "I'm pretty sure we're going to a Hispanic restaurant?" He said with a shrug. "America said he wanted to see an old friend." "Sounds good," Japan agreed.

When they got there, America was clinging tightly to Russia's hand, even though the bigger country kept trying to shake him off. They got their seats and waited for the drinks to arrive.

"Hey! It's my old friend! Hey, Ame!" cheered a country with a green, white, and red flag when he saw them. He was wearing a big, wide hat and a red bandana around his neck. He and America exchanged a complicated handshake, and both laughed loudly at the end of it, embracing each other. "Japan? This is Mexico," America said, gesturing with his hands. "Pleasure to meet you,"
Mexico said, tipping his hat at her. "I see you four are here for a good meal?" "Yessir," America grinned.

"Let me help you out!" Mexico beamed. He called out some phrases in a different language, and a loud clattering from the back of the restaurant followed. "I've got our new customer the special," he said with a wink. Japan smiled and nodded. "Oh, Mexico, before you leave," South stood from his chair, and whispered a few words in the country's ear.

He nodded, winking yet again. "Sounds good."

As they were waiting on the food, they talked about exams. "I think I failed all of em," America laughed, taking a long sip of his cola. "I'm sure you did fine," Russia mumbled, patting his boyfriend's shoulder. "I agree," said South. He nudged Japan with his shoulder. "And I'm sure the lovely lady I love so much did well, too."

Japan's ears flattened and her face became very warm.

"Food is here!" America yelled upon seeing Mexico and a few other waiters balancing trays piled high with delicious-smelling food.

"I brought you a sampler," Mexico said, placing down several plates. There were tacos,
tortas, and several other things she didn't recognize before. All four of them dug in hungrily. Japan enjoyed the food—it had a spicy kick at just the right heat.

After they had finished their meal, Mexico brought a small plate with a roll on top. "As requested by her date," He said as he placed the food in front of her, "a concha." The bread was coated with a sort of crunchy icing. It was also heart-shaped. It was delicious. South took Japan's hand in his and squeezed it, mouthing, I love you. She grinned, mouthed the same phrase back at him, and continued eating, her stomach now fluttering with dozens of butterflies.

America raised his sunglasses in mock surprise and smiled, elbowing Russia. "Look at them, Rus. They're so in love."
