—————————————————"Let's try that again," Liam said, positioning his mouth closer to the microphone.
When the boys started singing, Zayn realized his voice wasn't sounding the way it used to. He coughed a little and let everyone know he was okay. So they tried again.
"Alright, 3, 2, 1...written in these walls are the stories I can't explain" Louis sung.
Zayn's voice cracked again.
"Sorry," he said, "I don't know what happened. My throat just feels really dry. Maybe we should take a break? I can go get some water or something."
Liam nodded and Zayn made his way off stage to the backstage area where the boys usually hung out between sets. He found a bottle of water and took a sip, but it didn't help. In fact, it made his throat feel even drier. He put the bottle down on the counter and rubbed at his eyes with frustration- this was not how things were supposed to go tonight!
He walked back out onto stage just in time for their next song- but halfway through singing his voice gave out again and he had to stop abruptly before he could finish the line properly . The boys all looked over at him worriedly as Zayn mouthed 'sorry' before making his way off stage once more.
"Zayn, mate are you alright?" Niall asked. "I'm fine!" Zayn quickly reassured him.
Zayn had been feeling ill for the past few days but he didn't want to let his band mates down so he kept it to himself and tried to power through it. He knew that if he told them they would make him go home and rest and they would have to rearrange everything again.
Zayn made it through the rehearsal with no more problems than before. He started to feel nauseous but wasn't sure if it was from the illness or nerves, since the concert was about to start soon.
"Hey, are we ready to take the stage? We got this!" Liam said enthusiastically as he embraced everyone in a group hug. "Wait what? I thought the concert wasn't for another two hours?" Zayn asked confusedly.
"Zayn, you seem really out of it today. Are you sure you're okay? You can still do the show tonight, right?" Harry said all this in one breath.
"Ehm, yeah, of course. I'm totally fine, don't you guys worry" Zayn replied as he rubbed the back of his neck.
The boys didn't seem too convinced, but they had a show to do and not a lot of time so they decided to let it slide and soon the five young boys ran up to the stage, hearing all fans screaming as loud as possible.
"Hello Manchester! How are we feeling tonight?" Harry said to his microphone.
"We missed you!"
The boys smiled as they saw all the happy faces in the crowds and then started with their show. It was as always amazing, leaving the fans wanting more when they finally finished after two hours. The boys were exhausted but happy as they walked of stage, waving one last time to the cheering crowd before disappearing backstage.
Zayn sighed in relief and leaned against a wall, closing his eyes for a moment. He could hear someone coming closer and he opened his eyes again to see Harry standing there, looking at him with an eyebrow raised.
"You good?" He asked and Zayn just nodded tiredly. Before Harry could say anything else Zayn felt a wave of nausea hit him like a ton of bricks and he had to sprint to the bathroom.
"What a good show tonight" Niall spoke as he slumped himself onto the couch they had backstage. "Definitely" Liam agreed.
"Where's Zayn?" Louis asked, and Harry replied truthfully, "In the bathroom. I think he's not feeling well."
Just when Louis was about to go check up on his friend Zayn walked out from the bathroom, trying to look like nothing. "Damn you look like a ghost who's seen a ghost" Niall said.
"That doesn't even make sense Niall?" Louis said, looking at his friend with a confused expression.
"It does to me mate" Niall said, shrugging his shoulders.
"Can we just go home? I'm tired" Zayn said, and everyone agreed - they were all quite tired anyway.
After the boys arrived home, they each went to their own beds.
Liam was the first one up the next morning, and he decided to make breakfast for everyone. He knew no one could resist pancakes so he made a big batch.
"Hey there, sleepyheads," Liam said as he saw his two friends Louis and Harry walking to the kitchen tiredly. "Ay chill there, Niall and Zayn are still asleep? We're not the sleepyheads here" Louis protested.
"Alright alright, anyway I made pancakes!" Liam said enthusiastically as he put them on the breakfast table. "You can start already, I'll go wake up the real sleepyheads".
"What's going on hun? You're being really quiet," Louis said. "I'm fine, I'm just worried about Zayn," Harry replied.
"I'm sure he's fine. He was probably just tired yesterday" Louis assured Harry.
When everyone had finally woken up, they all gathered around the table and ate their breakfast in peaceful quiet.
However, Zayn didn't really touch his food. He noticed the concerned expressions on his friends' faces and said, "I'm just not very hungry."
"Sorry" he added, he felt bad.
Zayn suddenly starts coughing violently. After finally finishing coughing he tells his friends he just needs a bit rest.
Beads of sweat start to form on his forehead and he begins to shiver. "It's really hot in here, guys. Is the air conditioner on?" Zayn asks.
"Yeah it is mate...at maximum" Louis said, a bit worried by the way Zayn was sweating and shaking.
"I think I'll just go rest now" Zayn got up from his chairs but his legs immediately gave in, luckily Harry was there to catch him in time. "Whoa, take it easy," Harry said as he helped him sit up straight in his chair.
"N- no I, I go room- wait?" Zayn mumbled something that didn't even make sense to himself. Not too long after his vision started to blur n soon everything was black.
"Zayn!" The boys all yelled in unison.
"He's really sick isnt he?" Niall asks the other boys.
"I don't know, but I hope not. He hasn't been looking that great lately though," Louis said with a worried expression.
"Zayn? Zayn!" Liam tried to wake him up by shaking his shoulders, but there was no response.
"What do we do?" Harry asked with desperation in his voice.
However, a few minutes later Zayn stirred and slowly opened his eyes. "What's going on?" he muttered, trying to unsuccessfully sit up.
"You passed out man, are you feeling okay? Do you want me to take you to the hospital or something?" Liam asked.
Zayn shook his head no. "Zayn, tell us honestly, are you sick, you've been acting so different lately?" Harry asked genuinely.
Zayn sighed and looked down at the floor. He sat up slowly with the help of his friends. "Yeah, I've been feeling ill for a few days now. I'm sorry guys I just didn't want to worry you or make you all change plans for me" Zayn explained.
"Oh Z, we're your friends, remember? You've got to learn that you can tell us anything, we'll understand. But for your own health you should have told us earlier about this at least" Louis said and everyone nodded in agreement.
Now that that was clear, it didn't clear the fact that Zayn was still really sick and it didn't go anywahere. "I'll go back to bed now" Zayn announced but as soon as he stood up he felt the same dizziness again and he had to sit back down.
"No, you're not going anywhere. We'll take you back to bed and we can all sit with you for a while, okay?" Liam said and Zayn nodded tiredly. He got up with the help of his friends and was led back to his room where he gratefully laid down again.
"I'll go get some medicine from the pharmacy" Harry said. "Oh and I can cook something for you Zayn" Louis said.
"Wait a second now- no" Niall interjected. "Given Louis's cooking skills, I think it would be better if you two switched places. Harry can cook and Louis can go get the medicine." That suggestion elicited some chuckles from everyone.
Zayn really appriciated his friends, the way they tryuly cared for him whenever he needed. By the help of his friends he was able to recover faster than he thought.
