When Seoyeon told him 'I'll text you an address' Taehyung thought it would be some kind of cozy café, or maybe a quiet bar. He didn't expect to find himself standing in front of a house whose owner he had never heard of. Yet, he was sure he had gotten the address right. He did triple-check, after all. Checked the name on the mailbox, re-read her text fifteen times, and made sure he put the correct address on Google maps twice. So he was pretty confident he was at the right place.
Weird thing was, it wasn't Seoyeon's house. Well, unless Seoyeon was a man in disguise, a man who went by the name Junghun.
Fortunately for him, it seemed as though his questions were only minutes away from being answered. He heard footsteps behind him, the sound unmistakable on the concrete pavement spread all over the neighborhood.
Taehyung turned around, and as he watched her step closer and closer to him, he couldn't help but feel a little intimidated, for her mere walk exuded pure confidence, something he was now aware he lacked greatly. He tried not to embarrass himself when she stood a few centimeters away from him, extending her hand for him to shake.
"Nice to meet you, Taehyung." Their rings clashed as she closed her hand around his, lustrous gold and fine silver intertwining.
She smiled brightly at him as she closed her hand around his, and instantly, deja-vu hit him, for there was a striking resemblance between her smile and Jeongguk's: the same wide, contagious grin that, when sincere, could lighten up an entire room. Hence, it was only natural for Taehyung to mirror her smile, feeling less tense already.
"Sorry for being late." She apologized, unzipping her bag — an elegant, carnation-pink quilted purse — before she began looking through her belongings, in search of the key to the apartment. "I had a lot of work today, and the bus doesn't stop at this town, so i had to walk for half an hour in heels." Taehyung's gaze drifted from her face to her shoes and he winced at the sight of her platform high heels — which didn't exactly look like a delight to walk in.
"It's okay, I just got here anyway." He reassured her, eyebrows raised while he watched her struggle to find whatever she was looking for.
"Do you need help??"
She gave him a brief glance before sighing. "Yes, please. Hold this." She handed him an eyeglasses case as well as a few other items, clearing most of the space in her purse. "Found it!" She pulled out a set of keys from the depths of it and slid the longest one in the lock to open the door, unveiling a dark studio that smelled like humidity.
Taehyung didn't comment, merely following her as she stepped in the room with the flashlight of her phone on to find the light switch. Soon, the place was flooded with an unpleasant bright light that made Taehyung squint.
"Ugh, what a pig. I told him I would come over and he didn't even clean up." Seoyeon groaned, nose scrunched in mild disgust. "Well, make yourself at home." She told Taehyung. She dumped her things on the large, round table that took up most of the space in the room and Taehyung did the same thing, keeping his questions to himself for now.
"I'm sorry I'm making you meet with me here. Unfortunately meeting at my house is way too risky and Han knows most of the bartenders and store owners in town, so I didn't have much of a choice."
"It's okay." Taehyung repeated, allowing his eyes to wonder around the room. It was rather small, like any studio, but weirdly empty — except for the table in the center of the room, the fridge, and the shelf by the entrance. Granted, it wasn't big enough for a maximalist decoration, but it was hard to believe someone actually lived here.
"So is this your... boyfriend's place?" Taehyung questioned, curious even though his head was telling him not to ask any questions.
Seoyeon made a face. "What? No." She shook her head, as if she wanted to get rid of a particularly disgusting thought. "That's a friend's place. He's kind enough to let me borrow his dump for a few hours. He'll be back in a few hours so we better get to talking, though." She briefly explained, gesturing for the man to sit across from her.
She opened the fridge to grab a can of what he assumed to be beer, by the color of it. "Want one?" He shook his head, furrowing his eyebrows when she crouched down to look through the fridge.
"I don't want anything." He hurried to add, not wanting to waste any of her time. The woman rose her brows, a bit surprised, but she didn't insist.
"Suit yourself." And there was that bright smile again. For the second time, Taehyung mirrored it.
She pulled the tab of the can to open it, taking a sip of its content before sitting across from Taehyung and setting the can down.
"I just want you to know that there's no pressure, okay? You're Jeongguk's friend. I would never do anything to put you in danger." She immediately reassured him, holding eye contact. "In fact, if all goes well you won't even have to see Han at all." At that, Taehyung frowned.
"How will I help you then?" He inquired, confused.
Seoyeon took a deep breath, seemingly looking for the right words to use.
"Han talked about you." She ended up revealing, searching Taehyung's face for any possible signs of discomfort. She found none, so she took it as her cue to continue. "He mentioned something about one of your parents being a cop?"
Taehyung nodded. "My... step-dad is a cop, yeah." He tried not to think of his encounter with his dads the day before, for the wound it had left was still fresh and burning. "Why?"
"I need you to ask him questions. If he's a cop, he must know." Taehyung's confusion only deepened at the girl's words. He opened his mouth to ask, but when he looked at her, she seemed too busy ruffling through her bag to listen to his questions.
"Here." She pulled a yellow post-it out of her purse, sliding it across the table and towards Taehyung. "I'll do my best to take Han down, but before I do anything. I need to know." She looked at him intently, her tone dead-serious now.
Though apprehensive, Taehyung took the small rectangle of paper in his hand to read the few sentences written on it. The handwriting was delicate, contrasting with the words it was depicting. With a sigh, he put the post-it down.
"Those are really more questions for a lawyer..." he whispered, not daring to look at her — he was too afraid he'd see her face painted in disappointment if he did.
"I know, I know. But it's worth a try, right?" To his surprise, Seoyeon didn't seem that phased. He let out a sigh of relief, though the lump in his throat remained as he nodded.
"What do you plan on doing?" He finally dared to ask the question she'd been avoiding this whole time, his curiosity eventually winning over his fear of asking for too much.
He had to know. When it was about Jeongguk, he couldn't bear not knowing every single detail.
The more he was left in the dark, the more impuissant he felt. And the feeling was all the more distressing because the only thing Taehyung yearned for was to help Jeongguk.
There was a pause, an hesitation, clearly visible on Seoyeon's face. However after a moment of pondering, she glanced over at the clock hung on the wall in front of her, shifted on her seat to be closer to Taehyung and, lowering her voice, she whispered;
"Honestly, I'm not sure. I won't be able to convince him to let Jeongguk go, that's for sure. I need to find something so I can use it as leverage to pressure him." Taehyung nodded, though he couldn't help but wonder, what could a man like Han possibly fear?
He didn't get the time to ask, for before he could speak, Seoyeon had already slouched on her chair and crossed her arms over her chest, seemingly deep in thought.
"Thankfully, Han trusts me..." she trailed off, her eyebrows furrowing as she mentally explored all the possibilities she could think of. "I guess I could go to his house... distract him... I might find something there..."
"Isn't that dangerous? Going to his house?" Taehyung interrupted her, worried. To his surprise, Seoyeon merely shook her head in response, her curls bouncing ever-so slightly as she did so.
"I've been there countless of times. Han trusts me and I can think of a really good way to distract him. If this doesn't work, I'll come up with a plan B. I promise." There was something in her voice, an unmatched determination, that made Taehyung believe her every word. It was weird, considering the fact that they only met a few dozens of minutes ago, but somehow he felt she was trustworthy. She seemed like the kind of woman who keeps her word, and definitely not like the type to give up when an obstacle came in the way.
So he nodded, even uttering a tiny, yet firm "I trust you." as he did.
It wasn't like he had a choice, anyway.
This could be his one and only chance to get rid of Han, once and for all.
