The Cullen family stood on the battlefield awaiting the newborn army while the wolves hid in the trees, but a few were missing. Seth and Jacob went to check on Edward and Bella and should be arriving back soon, but Eliza was missing since the morning. "Where's Eliza?" Esme looked around the area for the blonde who had yet to return home after her argument with Edward. "She'll be here." Jasper knew that Eliza wouldn't miss the opportunity to partake in the battle. "She's late, they'll be here soon." Carlisle shared his mate's concern for the blonde. "Wherever she is, I'm sure she's fine." Alice was confident that Jasper knew best if Eliza was safe or not.
"They're coming." Alice got a vision of the army emerging from the river less than a mile away. Eliza was nowhere in sight, but the family had to prepare for the battle. It didn't take long for the army to come running up from the small hill ahead and the Cullens immediately moved to attack as well. Eliza could hear the commotion as she approached the battlefield. The blonde felt bad that she had disappeared and possibly worried her family but she was no good fighting angry, anger led to mistakes. Eliza scanned the field as she evaluated where she was need.
One of the wolves was being hit at all angles by multiple newborns and Eliza immediately went to jump in. Using the advantage of coming up behind the vampires, Eliza started off in a run and launched herself over the fight, twisting off one newborn's head as she flipped over Paul's wolf. Now that there was one less opponent, Paul easily shook off the newborns and Eliza left him to complete the kills. Eliza had taken another newborn down by the time Paul won his own battle. With the wolves' help, the newborns were dwindling in numbers and the battle would end soon.
Eliza wasted no time taking down any newborn that crossed paths with her, bringing her kills to at least 5. Eliza kept alert as she had taken down all of the newborns in her area, but she knew there had to be more that had yet to attack. Eliza caught movement in a nearby bush and she slowly made her way over. A young girl, maybe fifteen, looked mortified when Eliza stopped in front of her. Eliza's eyes soften as she looked between the newborn and the battlefield. "You're not here to fight us, are you?" Eliza noticed how the newborn desperately looked around for an escape, shaking her head as her brown hair whipped with the wind. "N-no, please-please, just-just let me go." the young girl begged Eliza. "What's your name?" Eliza realized just how similar this army was to Jasper's creators. "Her name is Bree." a small blonde boy came from around the other side of the bush. "And you are?" Eliza grew worried that she didn't pick up on the second presence. "Tanner." the young blonde couldn't have been older than 13.
"Do you know who created you?" Eliza glanced between the two teenagers and their surrounding area. "Riley didn't tell us, I don't want to be here. He made me kill someone." Tanner would be in tears if the ability wasn't taken away with his life. Eliza looked a the two newborns with pity, they reminded her of her own younger sibling. Eliza remembered how her brother would always push his older sister behind him when they were younger, ready to take whatever punishment their father had coming. "Tanner, do you think you and Bree can find somewhere to hide? Somewhere really hard for anyone to find you?" Eliza's eyes remained soft as Bree still looked down at the snowy floor, Tanner let out a big, yet rushed, nod. "Good, don't come out unless you hear me say so. I promise to come find you, go now." Eliza noticed another newborn approaching as the two teenagers took off into the trees.
Eliza took care of her last newborn and the battle was basically won. "How long?" Edward came running down from the mountains with Bella as he heard Alice had a new vision, the Volturi were coming. "A few minutes, maybe ten." Alice tried to estimate the group's arrival as the Cullens burned the newborn bodies. "The pack needs to leave, the Volturi won't honor a truce with the werewolves." Carlisle looked over at the wolves that remained spread around the tree line. Jacob made his own way down the mountain and stopped a few yards away from Leah's wolf. A stray newborn came out of the tree line near Leah and the shifter immediately let out a growl. Eliza watched the wolf lunge at the newborn, her attack too forward.
"Leah, no!" Eliza tried to warn the shifter as she took a step toward the tree line. Jacob saw the newborn's arms wrapped around Leah's neck and quickly moved to help. Jacob successfully ripped the newborn off of Leah but had a rough landing and it gave the vampire an advantage. Eliza ran over to try and prevent further damage but the newborn quickly wrapped himself around the wolf's chest, yanking down as he dug into Jacob's ribs. Jacob's wolf crumbled to the ground and he let out a loud yelp, Eliza barreling into the newborn and wrapping her legs around him as twisted off his head.
The wolves jumped at the rest of the newborn's remains as Eliza turned to see Jacob shift back to his human form. Jacob rolled around on the ground as his body exhibited pain like never before. "Jacob!" Bella took off from Edward's side and slid next to Eliza as the blonde tried to stop the shifter from moving. Carlisle immediately moved over to the shifter to inspect the damage as Eliza kept his body still. "The bones on the right half of his body are shattered." Carlisle observed as Jacob was slowly coming back to consciousness. "His wolf side will heal him, right?" Eliza looked over at Carlisle before scanning the field for the shifters. Jacob mumbled out a name, but not even Eliza could tell what he was trying to say. "Jacob, I'm right here." Bella grabbed onto the shifter's hand as the shifters came running out of the tree line. Eliza ignored Bella's reaction as she looked around for Sam, hoping that he would give her some sort of insight.
"Jacob, you idiot! I had it." Leah was the first to arrive, yelling at the shifter. "Leah." Sam snapped at the female shifter, not caring about her personal feelings right now. "I need to set the bones before his accelerate healing kicks in, it's already starting." Carlisle looked up at Sam as Jacob's arm was already healed. "We need to get him out of here. We're not going to win a fight with the Volturi." Edward reminded the group of Alice's vision. "We'll take him back to Billy's." Sam motioned for the pack to help move Jacob's body. "I'll be there as soon as I can." Carlisle promised his assistance as the pack lifted the shaking shifter.
"They're coming!" Alice warned as the shifter made their way off the battlefield. The coven quickly stood united as four forms came from the west, stopping to stand next to the fire. "Impressive, I've never seen a coven escape an assault of this magnitude intact." Jane's words held suspicion as the group removed their hoods. "We were lucky." Carlisle gave a modest response, one that Jane wasn't happy with. "I doubt that." Jane glared at the coven, her eyes scanning each member. "It appears we missed an entertaining fight." Alec mused to his sister.
"Yes, it's not often we're rendered unnecessary." Jane's tone held accusation as she responded to her brother's words. "If you would've arrived a half hour ago, you would have fulfilled your purpose." Edward spoke up next, not liking the girl's prying attitude. "Pity." Jane tilted her head with a small pout, but her eyes lit up as she took notice of something behind her. "You missed one." Jane's words caused the family to turn around in shock. Eliza had completely forgotten about Bree and Tanner after Jacob's injury. Tanner looked at the Volturi girl frightened and Eliza immediately took a protective step back.
"We offered him asylum in exchange for his surrender." Carlisle took notice of Eliza's actions and how Tanner's eyes frantically looked between the two blondes. "That wasn't yours to offer." Jane glared at Eliza and the young boy. "Why did you come?" Jane demanded an answer from the cowering newborn. Tanner's fear tangled itself around his words as he struggled to coherently answer the question. Jane ad no patience for the boy and immediately sent waves of pain into his body. It took everything in Eliza's body to stop herself from intervening when the small boy began screaming in pain. "Who created you?" Jane continued her interrogation without even bothering to stop the torture.
Eliza moved her eyes away from the scene and her body tensed when she saw Bree's small form emerge, probably concerned by Tanner's screams. Bree looked at the Volturi and Tanner before back at Eliza. The small teenagers met Eliza's eyes, the Cullen begging the brunette to go back into hiding. Bree seemed to get the message just as Alec noticed Eliza's straying eyes. Alec snapped his head over to the tree line, but thankfully the small girl was gone. "You don't need to do that, he'll tell you anything you need to know." Esme defended the small boy when she noticed Eliza's attention was drawn elsewhere. "I know." Jane smiled viciously as she finally began to loosen her hold. "I don't know." Tanner gasped out an answer as he tried to recover from the torture. "Riley wouldn't tell us, he said our minds weren't safe." Tanner began to violently cough.
"Her name was Victoria, perhaps you knew her." Edward took a step forward, his tone holding its own accusations. "Edward, if the Volturi had knowledge of Victoria, they would've stopped her. Isn't that right Jane?" Carlisle prevented the Coven from making even bigger enemies of the Volturi. "Of course." Jane lied straight through her teeth before glancing at the other guards behind her. "Felix." Jane motioned for the guard to kill the small boy. "He didn't know what he was doing." Eliza narrowed her eyes at the guard who stepped forward. "We'll take responsibility for him." Esme supported Eliza's effort to fight for the boy's life. "Give him a chance." Carlisle looked to Jane for mercy. "The Volturi don't give second chances." Jane's words motioned Felix forward.
"Keep that in mind, Caius will be interested to know that she's still human." Jane turned away from Felix as she set her sights on Bella. "The date is set." Bella defended the coven and Jane looked less amused at the human's cooperation. "Take care of that, Felix. I'd like to go home." Esme grabbed Eliza's hand as the guard moved to kill the boy. Eliza closed her eyes and looked away from Tanner as she heard the sound of limbs being torn apart. Esme looked at the blonde with pity, shock flashing through her eyes as she swore she saw a tear escape Eliza's closed eyes. The Volturi turned to leave after Felix threw Tanner's broken body into the fire that was still ablaze.
Eliza opened her eyes as she glared at the retreating Volturi members. Not a single Cullen moved until they knew the Volturi were far from the battlefield. Bree reemerged from her hiding spot as she looked around to make sure she was safe. Eliza caught sight of the girl's brunette hair, giving Bree a small nod when their eyes met again. Bree wasted no time running over Eliza, her new abilities sending her body crashing into Eliza's as the brunette clung to the blonde's waist. The Cullens looked alarmed at the sudden movement but relaxed when they saw Eliza embrace the small newborn. "We heard that guy screaming, I told him not to go, I'm sorry." Bree held on tightly to Eliza as she buried her face into the blonde's shoulder.
"It's okay. You're safe now." Eliza didn't release her hold on the newborn as she looked over at Carlisle for approval. Carlisle gave Eliza a small smile and nod as Bree finally pulled away from Eliza "They killed him, didn't they?" Bree looked over at the retreating fire. "Yeah, they did." Eliza sighed as she too looked at the fire with disappointment and despair. Carlisle's phone made a sound and Eliza suddenly remembered that the shifters were waiting for them. "Bree, I have to go visit someone, but I'm going to leave you with Esme. She'll keep you safe and I promise I'll come see you as soon as I can, okay?" Eliza glanced over at Esme and Carlisle as the Cullen coven split up.
