"Newsies! Get 'em!" Jack yelled.
A cop appeared and Romeo ran up to him. "It's about time you got here. They're slaughtering us!"
He was slapped in the face and knocked to the ground.
"Cheese it! It's the bulls!" Jack cried.
Ellie and Katherine watched as they made their escape. The former tried to go back, but Katherine stopped her. "Eliie, I don't think we can help them."
"We have to!" Ellie cried. "We can't just leave them to fend for themselves!"
There was more fighting and the Delanceys grabbed Crutchie. "Help, Jack, help! Jack! Romeo! Finch!"
"Shut it, ya stupid crip!" Morris growled.
Crutchie hit Morris with his crutch and Oscar punched Crutchie, which caused him to fall. Snyder picked up the crutch.
Ellie gasped as her hands flew to her mouth.
"No! No, wait! Please!" Crutchie begged.
Snyder hit Crutchie with his crutch. Crutchie screamed. "It's off to the Refuge with you, little man. Take him away!"
"Please Jack! Help me!" Crutchie called again.
"Crutchie!" Jack yelled.
"Kelly!" Snyder yelled.
Jack ran to his penthouse.

Jack:
Folks we finally got our headline
"Newsies Crushed as Bulls Attack"
Crutchie's calling me
Dumb crip's just too damn slow
Guys are fightin', bleedin', fallin'
Thanks to good ole' Captain Jack
Captain Jack just wants to close his eyes and GO!
Let me go
Far away
Somewhere they won't never find me,
and tomorrow won't remind me of today
And the city's finally sleepin'
And the moon looks old and grey
I get on a train that's bound for Santa Fe
And I'm gone
And I'm done
No more running. No more lying
No more fat old man denying me my pay
Just a moon so big and yellow, it turns night right into day
Dreams come true. Yeah they do. In Santa Fe
Where does it say you gotta live and die here?
Where does it say a guy can't catch a break?
Why should you only take what you're given?
Why should you spend your whole life living trapped where there ain't no future
Even at 17!
If the life don't seem to suit ya', how about a change of scene?
Far from the lousy headlines, and the deadlines in between
Santa Fe, my old friend
I can't spend my whole life dreaming
Though I know thats all I seem inclined to do
I ain't getting any younger
And I wanna start brand new
I need space. And fresh air
Let 'em laugh in my face. I don't care
Save my place- I'll be there
Just be real is all I'm asking
Cause I'm dead if I can't count on you today
I got nothing if I ain't got Santa Fe

The next morning, at Jacobi's Deli, Finch asked, "Why do old people talk?"
"To prove they's still alive," Race said sarcastically.
"Good morning gentleman," Katherine said happily as she and Ellie walked through the door. "Oh, would you get a load of these glum mugs. Why, can these really be the same boys who made front page of the New York Sun?"
"Front page of what?" Henry asked.
"Let me see!" Race cried as he took the paper from Katherine. "Well would you look at that! That's me!"
"Front page and you ain't even dead," Jojo joked.
"Where's me? Where's me?" Romeo questioned.
"Just wait till my old man gets a load of this. I won't be last in line for the tub tonight!" Elmer exclaimed.
"You got us in the papes?" Davey asked.
"You got yourselves in the papes," Ellie clarified with a smile.
""Newsies Stop The World"," Mush read. "Now there's a headline even Elmer could sell."
"Hey, what else you got?" Specs asked.
Ellie shook her head. "Oh, well, Katherine and mine's the only story than ran. Pulitzer declared a blackout on strike news, so even we're shut down now. Hey, Katherine and I heard they arrested Crutchie. Did they get Jack too?"
"The Delanceys are spreading the story that he took it on the land at the first sight of cops," Albert informed.
"Jack don't run from no fight!" Les argued.
"Hey, get down short stuff. I'm just reporting the news."
"For jumpin' Jack's sake. Can you stow your curiosity for long enough to drink in the moment? I'm famous!" Race exclaimed.
"Yeah, what of it?" Romeo said.
"You stupid or what? You're famous, and the world is yer erster!"
"Yer what?"
"Yer erster. Yer erster? You know, your fancy clam with the pearl inside."
"Oyster!" some of the boys yelled.
"How much does being famous pay?" Henry asked.
--
Race (spoken):
Ya don't need money when you're famous. They gives ya whatever ya want gratis.
Henry:
Such as?
Race (sung)
A pair of new shoes with matchin' laces
Romeo:
A permanent box at the sheepshead races
Henry:
Pastrami on rye with a sour pickle
Finch:
My personal puss on a wooden nickel
Race:
Look at me: I'm the king of New York!
Suddenly, I'm respectable, staring right at'cha, lousy with sta'cha.
Albert:
Nobbin' with all the muckety-mucks, I'm blowin' my dough and goin' deluxe
Race:
And there I be! Ain't I pretty?
Race and Henry:
It's my city. I'm the king of New York!
Jojo:
A solid gold watch with a chain to twirl it
Les:
My very own bed and a indoor terlet
Mush:
A barbershop haircut that costs a quarter
Davey (indicating Katherine and Ellie):
A regular beat for the star reporters!
Race:
Amscray, punk, they're the kings of New York!
Katherine and Ellie:
Who'd'a thunk! I'm the king of New York!
Newsies:
We was sunk, pale and pitiful,
Katherine:
Bunch of wet noodles,
Katherine, Ellie and Newsies:
Pulitzer's poodles.
Les:
Almost about to drown in the drink,
Buttons:
When they fished us out
Race:
And drowned us in ink!
Katherine and Ellie:
So let's get drunk!
Newsies:
Yeah!
Florie:
Not with liquor. Fame works quicker, when you're king of New York.
Newsies:
I gotta be either dead or dreamin', 'cause look at that pape with my face beamin'.
Tomorrow they may wrap fishes in it, but I was a star for one whole minute!
Newsies, Ellie and Katherine:
Look at me: I'm the king of New York!
Wait and see: this is gonna make both the Delanceys pee in their pantsies
Flashpots are shootin' bright as the sun!
I'm one highfalutin' son of a gun!
I guarantee: though I crapped out, I ain't tapped out!
I'm the king of New-
Friends may flee. Let 'em ditch ya!
Snap one pit'cha, you're the king of New-
History! Front page story, guts and glory, I'm the king of New York!
