“Aj main bohut udaas hu, Zeenat apa”.
The gloomy voice of hers echoed across the air not only causing the birds pecking on the grains that Zeenat apa threw for them to turn their necks towards her but also for Zeenat apa to give her a weird look as she let out a soft gasp,

"Haw bibi g, apko Kon si udasi hogayee"?

Daneen let out a dramatic sigh wiping the non-existent sweat from her forehead as she spoke inclining her neck and gazing above at the light blue sky that was covered with puffy clouds at the moment,
"Agar aik hota tou apko batati main, lekan itnay ghum hain k ginti main hi nahi atay".

Her voice edged with exaggerated sadness.

Zeenat apa's brows furrowed as she placed one hand on her waist and stated oh so nonchalantly,
"Bibi ji, main tou jab bhi dekhun ya tou ap so rahi hoti hain, ya khana kha rahi hoti hain ya phir TV dekh rahi hoti hain. Phir ye ghum kahaan say mil gaye apko".

At her brutally honest words, not only the birds sighed softly going back to pecking on their precious grains but also a series of snickers echoed from the duo's mouths who remained sprawled on the charpoy with books covering their faces.

Daneen's nostrils flared and brows furrowed at her precious tempo being disrupted as she turned her neck giving Zeenat apa her offended glance before fanning herself with her hand and speaking,
"Kiya ap mujhe nikammi keh rahi hain, Zeenat bibi"?

"Bibi ji, iss main kehnay ki kiya baat hai. Wo tou ap hain".

Zeenat apa's words made the duo break into laughter and Daneen's frown to deepen more as she gnashed her teeth at the two most annoying humans on planet Earth,
"Tum dono ko bohut hansi arahi hai"?

Huzaifa lowered the physics textbook from his face which he was going through as he slightly raised his upper frame a bit, turning it slightly to face her as he rested his elbow taking its support to prop his frame,
"What? You want to snatch our right to laugh now"?

Daneen's lips pressed in a thin line as she huffed softly,
"You monkeys! I'm your commander, show me some respect".

Huzaifa rolled his eyes lazily,
"A commander who only knows to eat, relax, watch TV and sleep. How impressive"!

Daneen's nostrils flared as she she seethed in an unforgivable tone,
"Zuban bari kainchi ki tarha nahi chal rahi tumhari".

"Haan tou chalnay dain, meri hai, konsi apki hai".
Huzaifa shrugged his shoulders replying lazily as he went back to revising the chapter.

"Badtameez"!
Daneen huffed giving him a last glare before turning her attention towards Hamza's frame who unlike Huzaifa's lying frame, was sitting on the charpoy in cross as he swiftly made notes for Chemistry.

"Hamza, how long will it take for you to finish making them"?

At her question, Hamza raised his head for a fraction of second as he opened his mouth to speak for the first time,
"Api, there are still two chapters left".

Daneen let out a soft sigh as she turned folding her arms on her chest,
"Tum dono Behan ka gham na bantna"!

"Behan only knows how to give us depression. Thank you very much, we don't need it".
Huzaifa remarked from behind the book making Daneen send a loud 'Dafa ho' his way which he utterly and royally ignored.

Zeenat apa, remembering something, spoke the other second as she threw more grains for the birds,
"Aur apko pata hai bibi g, us waqt Shagufta keh rahi thi k baray hujray main apkay baray main baat horahi thi. Wo chai denay gayee tou us nay apka naam sun Liya".

Daneen let out a dramatic sigh as she lowered her arms resting them on the hand trail as she propped her chin on the back of her hand,
"That would definitely be my precious Amaw huzoor showering Khurram bhai's ears with my numerous complaints".

"Hain? Aur apko dar bhi nahi lag raha"?
Zeenat apa asked, slightly startled.
She knew well how every person present in the haveli feared that man and Daneen was no exception.

She used to change her way if Khurram Shah popped from other side.

Daneen sighed softly as she gazed down at the lush backlawn,
"Dar lagnay say Kiya wo dantay gae nahi mujhe? What is supposed to happen will happen. I, a brave commander, won't show any weakness no matter what others do".

"Yeah! The same brave commander who barely escaped getting caught for plucking guavas from Zafar uncle's tree. Really brave".
The sarcastic tone of Huzaifa easily gave her another frown as she turned her neck throwing him a glare.

Hamza's wound seemed to have freshened too at the words as he raised his head halting his writing and spoke in an accusing tone,
"And Khurram bhai scolded me so much. You both made me the scapegoat at the end"!

"Someone needs to sacrifice so his other comrades can safely evade trouble".
Huzaifa lazily commented turning the page of the book.

His words successfully flared Hamza's nostrils as the teenager straightened his back giving him a glare,
"You besharam insan! You should be grateful I took the blame upon myself and didn't expose you. You are indebted to me, show some respect".

Huzaifa raised his gaze giving him a fake half smile,
"I'm an ingrate, I don't know how to show gratitude".
Before nonchalantly going back to revising the chapter.

Hamza could only let out a huff as he held the pen aggressively going back to making notes, vowing to not pay these annoying people any of his precious attention.
They didn't deserve it!

Daneen turned towards Zeenat apa's frame,
"Zeenat bi, what do you think they were talking about"?

A frown immediately marred Zeenat apa's features,
"Bibi g, abhi tou apnay suna k Huzaifa babu aur Hamza babu kiya bol rahay thay, kiya ap k kaan kharab honay shuru hogaye hain"?

Daneen felt like banging her head somewhere,
"Main in ki nahi, dada jaan k kamray ki baat ker rahi hu".

Zeenat finally nodded in understanding,
"Oh acha acha. Abhi tou ap keh rahi thi k apki shikayatain lag rahi hngi".

Daneen let out a dramatic sigh as she rubbed her chin lightly,
"Oh, that was my guess. But what do you think"?

Zeenat apa replied as she emptied the bowl of grains for the birds,
"Aur tou Kuch hai hi nahi batanay wala, tou shikayat hi lag rahi hogi".

Daneen turned giving Zeenat apa her puppy eyes,
"You won't console me"?

She even batted her lids thrice to add a more dramatic effect to her acting.

Zeenat apa gave her a weird look,
"Main kiyun dilasay dungi apko, ap koi das saal ki bachi hain bhala"?

Huzaifa's snicker echoed in the background.

Daneen's nostrils flared as she huffed turning her neck away,
"Bohut sangdil hain ap, Zeenat apa".

"Larkiyon ko mazboot hona chahiye, Daneen bibi. Werna iss dunya main guzara nahi hota unka".
Zeenat spoke giving her a glance.

Daneen's lips pressed in a thin line as she flipped her braid back from her shoulder,
"Bus phir ap aj biryani pakka dain".

Zeenat apa seemed to had been left utterly speechless at her words as her jaw dropped touching the ground,
"Bibi g, biryani say ap mazboot hojayen gi"?

She gazed back at Daneen as if the girl had grown horns over her head.

Daneen smiled for the first time revealing her pearly teeth,
"Haan na! Biryani is my pill for mental strength".

Zeenat bi kept gazing at her for few seconds before finally shaking her head in disappointment,
"Bibi ji, ap nahi sudhrain gi".

Daneen giggled softly at her words as she mused,

"Sudharnay main kiya rakha hai. Hum tou jaisay hain waisay hi rahain gae".

Sitting at the dining table, Shanzay's gaze switched from her mother's tense and serious face with knitted brows to her father's calm and cheerful one and ofcourse towards the brute who looked as expressionless as always, looking oh so aloof and nonchalant, as if a world war would happen around him and he would not bat an eyelash.

Shanzay gulped the cucumber slice she was chewing on earlier as she reluctantly picked up her spoon to eat the rice.

Wah begum! Ye reshmi chicken tou bohut lazeez banaya hai apnay. Aur uff Kiya pulao hai, Dil khush ker diya. Ap batayen sardar Sahab, Kuch Pasand araha hai k nahi apko”?

At the echo of her father's laid back tone that successfully faded a bit of awkwardness lingering in air, she turned her gaze towards her mother first whose brows furrowed deeper at her husband's words before hesitantly and sneakily turning it towards the arrogant Sardar who had his attention and gaze focused down on the plate filled with the mutton pulao as he nodded with a soft hum,
“Har cheez hi lazeez hai, Salman sahab”.

She heard her father chuckle softly at that,
“Ab ye tou ap humara dil rakhnay k Liye keh rahay hain, nahi"?

She saw the corners of the brute's lips twitch as he let out a soft sigh before a second later, raising his gaze towards her father's frame,
Badar murawat main bhi Kisi ka dil nahi rakhta. Jo kehta hai, Dil say kehta hai”

Salman Malik couldn't help but chuckle again at his words,
"No one can beat you in words".

She saw the brute's lips twitch in that subtle hint of smile again as he turned his gaze and unintentionally and utterly involuntarily, it met her own light coloured orbs with which she was trying to sneakily gaze at him.

Shanzay tried hard not to choke on the morsel she was eating as she immediately evaded his obsidian irises the other second, raising the glass to her lips and gulping it down in one go as if she hadbeen parched.

Why were the eye contacts with him oh so fatal, so heart-poundingly intense and nerve-wracking?

Badar's brow arched higher at seeing her oh so royally avert her gaze from him as if she wasn't sneakily looking at him a minute ago as the corners of his lips twitched the other second,
“Aur ap nay Kiya banaya hai”?

She nearly choked on the water she was drinking, breaking into a hysteric cough making her mother rub her back up and down in concern as she gave a glare towards her frame that said ‘can't you be careful’?

Shanzay didn't need to say anything because Salman Malik had already started speaking,
“Well, my Shanzay always makes me proud with the things she does. But when it comes to cooking, it's the only thing she isn't good at. Though I'm pretty sure she made the salad, didn't you, bachay"?

“G-g baba".
She replied with great difficulty.
A slight relief that had hit her frame after successfully evading the brute's attention was shortlived as her father began speaking the other second making her nearly slip from her seat,

"Her experience with cooking hasn't been good so far. Do you remember Nadia when she cooked for the first time, that pulao she made looked more like porridge and-"

She immediately gripped at her sanity trying to control the situation at hand and not lose her precious face, she immediately opened her mouth cutting her father in between also forwarding the platter of Shami kebabs towards him,

"Baba why don't you eat these shami kebabs. Ma worked so hard in preparing them".
She gave him a small forced smile with those pleading orbs of hers that begged him to not continue the embarrassing story any further.

But her father didn't notice the expression in her orbs as he hummed in approval, picked up one kebab and took a bite as another hum left his lips,

"Mhmmm. Undoubtedly, my Nadia's hand cooked meals taste the best. So where were we, yes, Shanzay's first cooking experience. Did I tell you that she actually added sugar instead of salt and that's not even the most shocking-"

"Baba"!
She immediately slid the piece of carrot from the salad platter in his mouth making his tongue come to a sudden halt.

"P-please eat this...uh...I mean, eat and chew properly. You sh-shouldn't talk while eating, you'd choke on the food".
She stuttered giving her father a tight-lipped smile with the orbs of hers half glaring and half pleading.

Her father gave her a confused look but stopped talking anyways for which she was extremely grateful.

Letting out a sigh of relief, she raised the glass to her lips again as her orbs unintentionally swept across the air meeting the brute's ferocious ones again.

Seeing him arch his brow with that glint oh so vividly shining in his obsidian irises, she immediately averted her gaze again not even realizing that she had fully gulped down another glass of water.

"Beta, is the food too spicy? Why are you drinking so much water"?
Her mother asked with visible concern marring her voice.

Shanzay gulped as her cheeks flushed beetroot,
"Uh...I'm a little thirsty".

"Acha".
Nadia begum nodded focusing her attention back on her plate.

Shanzay's ears perked up at her father's voice who was now discussing some business related stuff oh so enthusiastically with the arrogant Sardar who was replying back politely and actively with that calm and collected demeanor of his.

During their exchange, Shanzay noticed oh so vividly the amount of times the brute's fork moved towards the large salad platter placed near his side of table.
And it astounded her internally to see him nearly empty more than half of it and that too alone.

He really is a lover of salads, isn't he?

Even now as he was attentively listening to her father, his fork moved towards the platter again as it picked up a cucumber slice.

Shanzay who was gazing at his hand movements counting the times it had moved towards it again when the brute raised his gaze from the platter meeting her orbs again.

Shanzay's focused orbs first snapped to his face at seeing his attention on her before the other second the doe like irises of hers widened.

Badar glanced deep into the taken aback orbs of hers that looked astonished and mortified at being caught peeking again as he brought the fork to his mouth, not breaking the gaze.

Chewing the slice, he cocked his brow causing it to nearly touch his hairline as the corner of his lip twitched forming a barely noticeable half smile.

Shanzay's face paled as if she'd seen a ghost as she immediately averted her gaze filling another glass of water before gulping it down in one go as if her life depended on it.

"Shanzay bachay, hoslay say piyo".
Her mother scolded lightly making the cheeks of hers flush again as she placed the empty glass on table vowing to not lift her eyes again and come across that infuriating human being whose mere eyes glinted with oh so visible teasing giving her poor heart shakes and quakes.

He needs to get arrested for possessing such pair of eyes!

"-and even Shanzay was so excited for your arrival, she especially told me to order some refreshments from her favorite bakery".

Shanzay who was internally stressing over the look in brute's orbs earlier felt the ground slip from beneath her feet again as she felt her world shake violently at hearing her father's scandalous words.

Her mouth hung open as her jaw touched the ground.
Just why on earth was her precious father hell-bent on embarrassing her infront of this hotheaded sardar.

She tried not to choke on her breath and suffocate herself, which she desperately wanted to, as she immediately snapped her neck towards her father giving him a dumbfounded look,
"Wh-who was excited"?

Her tone holding visible shock.

From the corner of her eyes, she could slightly catch the glimpse of the brute leaning back on the seat turning his full attention towards her with the lips of his visibly twitching and that annoying hand holding the fork moving towards the salad platter again as she tried to utterly and royally ignore his existence turning her glaring and accusing orbs towards her father's frame.

Salman Malik who was happily munching on the reshmi chicken made by his precious Nadia's hands immediately raised his gaze at his daughter's words.

At seeing her glare deep into his soul with her lips pressed in a thin line and nostrils flaring in suppressed anger, he gulped audibly immediately pulling his tongue to a halt.
Did I say something wrong?

Trying to cheer up the suddenly silent air, he spoke turning his gaze towards his precious wife,
"My precious Nadia, why are you so quiet? You haven't said anything".

And a second later, he regretted saying that because the next moment, Nadia begum had her attention on the cruel hearted sardar's frame as she parted her lips to speak with her brows furrowed and face devoid of any hint of softness,
"Sardar Badar".

Badar whose fork was picking up the last piece of carrot from the now empty salad platter raised his gaze towards her at her voice.

His orbs expressionless and voice low as he replied,
"G kahiye".

"Tou ye batayen mujhe k kiya kersaktay hain ap meri shanzay k liye"?

At her words, Salman Malik resisted the urge to facepalm himself as he gave his wife a helpless glance while Shanzay immediately dug her forehead in her palm as she glued her gaze to the table regretting the moment she had agreed with her father for hosting this lunch because this lunch was turning out anything but peaceful turning nothing less than a disaster with each passing moment.
She let out a helpless sigh.

Jo wo chahain mujh say kerwana

The deep baritone tone that echoed not only left her speechless for few seconds but also broke a smile on her father's face as he now relaxed-ly leaned back on his chair raising the glass filled with water to his lips watching the duo with an amused grin appearing on his face.

Nadia Begum's lips trembled at his words as if trying to suppress her rage as she spoke through gritted teeth,
"Kiyun? Khud nahi kersaktay us k Liye Kuch? Kiya uska apni zuban say kehna zaroori hai"?

Not even a single crease formed on his face at her harsh tone as the arrogant specimen of a man replied with utter nonchalance and same expressionlessness,

"Ker tou sakta hu main, lekan agar wo Kuch kernay ka kahain gi tou usay bhi inkar nahi karun ga main”.

Shanzay's face bowed more, her father's smile deepened and her mother's expressions turned almost grave as she seethed,
"Ap Sirf baaton say meri beti ka dil nahi jeet saktay".

Badar's tongue oh so subtly clicked the inside of his cheek as he leaned back on chair while grabbing the jug to pour himself water,

"Main sirf baaton per yaqeen rakhta bhi nahi hu, main ker kay bhi dikhata hu, Mrs Salman".

Nadia begum barely stifled her anger as she threw a glare towards her grinning husband's frame before turning her pointed orbs back towards the arrogant and aloof frame of a man who had raised the glass to his lips,
"Maslan"?

"Mhmmm"?
Badar asked gulping down the sip as he settled the glass back on the table.

"Maslan ap kiya kersaktay hain meri beti k liye"?
Nadia begum enquired in a serious tone.

A soft sigh left the heartless reputed man's lips as he asked in a tone that hadn't risen an octave since he started conversing with her,
"Ap batayen, kiya kerna chahiye mujhe"?

A sudden satisfaction hit Nadia Begum's features as she leaned back on the chair gazing at the brute's frame with an expressionless look,
"Apni nehar k pass wali zameen naam kersaktay hain Shanzay k"?

"Ma"!
Shanzay felt utterly mortified at her words as she immediately raised her head snapping her neck towards her, gazing at her with her wide accusatory and utterly shocked eyes.
How could she demand for something like that?!
Was this her worth?
Was it to be determined with lands?
What was the reason to ask such a thing from him?
What would he think about them, that how materialistic they were, that this was the reason they had invited him for lunch.
Shanzay felt extremely embarrassed and ashamed to her core.

Even Salman Malik's grin had disappeared as a frown appeared between his brows for the first time.

Badar's obsidian irises reflected the calmness and stillness of oceans as he declared in an unwavering tone without any hint of reluctance,

"Main apnay maghrib walay gaon ki 'sari zameenain' in k naam kerdun ga, ap aur batayen".

"M-mujhe zameenain nahi chahiye".
Shanzay felt her voice come out extremely small as she stated only for her mother to award her a with a glare,

"Chup raho tum"!

Before she turned her gaze back towards the nonchalant brute himself who sat there on the chair as if it was his personal throne with not an ounce of irritation showing on his face,

"Ap mujhe kaisay yaqeen dila saktay hain k Shanzay ap k saath khush rahay gi"?

Badar Nauraiz Shah replied without a second pause as the shawl clad shoulders of his shrugged slightly,

"Wo ap khud dekh lain gi. Wo meray saath khush rehti hain ya nahi, kiyun k meri zaat say koi takleef nahi milay gi inhain".

There was something edging his baritone tone, something oh so sincere that Shanzay felt the fingertips of hers quiver oh so slightly.

Nadia Begum's frown didn't lessen a bit nor did the seriousness in her tone fade,
"Apko itna yaqeen kiyun hai k Shanzay apko mouqa de gi? Is rishtay ko mouqa de gi"?

Badar's brow arched at her words as he replied in his calm deep voice,

"Kiya meri yahaan moujoodgi is cheez ki gawah nahi hai"?

Nadia Begum was left speechless for few seconds, unable to formulate words and Salman Malik finally let out a soft sigh as the frown of his faded and the small smile invaded his lips again as he slightly leaned towards his daughter and whispered in a tone audible for only her ears,

"Your man is slaying. He's pretty quick witted, might I add".

Shanzay turned her glare towards him as a gasp left her lips,
"Baba"!

On the other hand, her mother's interrogation was still not coming slow as she asked again with her expressions tense than before,
"Agar Shanzay ko ap ki taraf say koi takleef mili"?

"Meri zaat say unhain koi aziyat nahi milay gi, main apko apni zuban deta hu".
The baritone voice of his tinged with raw sincerity and unwavering firmness causing Shanzay's throat to turn dry.

She remembered he had said those words to her before, the day he took her back home when she was stuck due to bad weather.
The sincerity that marred his tone now was same as it did that time.
There was no hesitance, no reluctance and no doubt.

Nadia begum sighed softly,
"Kiya mujhe apki zubaan par bharosa kerna chahiye"?

Badar grabbed the napkin tapping it on his lips before placing it back,
Badar zuban ka pakka hai. Iss zuban ki khatir jaan tak de sakta hai apni”.

"Aur agar kabhi akela chor diya usay tou"?
Her mother asked in a serious tone.

Badar's expressions didn't change nor did the rough deep voice of his waver,

“Badar na pairon talay say zameen kheench-nay walon main say hai, na hi sar k ooper say asman hata denay walon main say. Agar koi rishta nibhata hu, tou dil say nibhata hu. Jo dil say nahi kerta, wo zindagi main rakhnay ki gunjaish bhi nahi rakhta”.

"Aur meri beti ap k dil ko manzoor hai"?
Nadia begum asked trying to get out something from him, maybe to check the depth of his feelings for his daughter, if there were any.

Badar's gaze flickered to her bowed head for a fraction of second, the way the brown strands of hers were draped over her shoulders and her forehead resting in her dainty palm as if she was going through some huge kind of stress, only appearing more cute in that posture.

His orbs didn't avert from her figure as he replied softly,

Wo dil ko manzoor nahi hoti tou main yahaan na hota”.

Something dropped into the deepest pits of her stomach at his words before rising, oh so slowly, oh so lightly, before she heard the beats of her heart escalate,
The piece of organ almost thudding beside her ears, loudly, madly, nearly damaging her eardrums as the shells of her ears turned scarlet, the hues spreading all the way till her pale earlobes.

Though Nadia begum was left speechless, this time, the frown resting between her brows had actually lessened as the face of hers didn't reflected the earlier stern and grave expressions.

Salman Malik spoke for the first time at seeing his wife finally turn silent,
"Begum, kiya behas lekar beth gayee ap, bachon ko bhi pareshan kerdiya. Ap dil per mat lijye ga inki baatain, Sardar sahab".

A hint of a very genuine yet subtle smile lifted the corners of brute's lips as he raised his gaze towards the aged man's graceful figure, the obsidian cups of his sincere and bright,

"Wo Ma hain, unka fikarmand hona apni jaga baja hai. Mujhe bilkul bhi bura nahi laga, Salman sahab".

He stated in a light yet firm tone.

His words did something to her heart.
Something she couldn't name.
A feeling that was both new and foreign, a feeling she couldn't describe.

Shanzay didn't understand how he did it all so effortlessly, say these words so effortlessly, as if they didn't bother him, as if it wasn't difficult to vocalize them out loud.

He was so loud, so open about his emotions, his feelings, his thoughts even with the most minimalistic gestures of his.

He was like that wolf that was unrestrained, an utter rogue who couldn't be tamed nor could one see and understand what went through his head.

She let out a soft sigh.

Later, the man didn't stop for tea.
And hence when her father went out to see him off, she accompanied her mother in kitchen.

She thought she'll come across the angry frame of hers but shockingly, her mother's mood was much better.

She was instructing something to Farzana when she entered.

At the sound of her footsteps, Nadia begum turned,
"Chalo acha hai tum bhi agayee, ye chota carton ooper store room main rakh ao shabash".

She nodded immediately complying as she picked up the small carton that was pretty much light weight as she exited the kitchen and took the staircase rushing upstairs.

Placing the carton in the storeroom, she exited it and while passing through the corridor, immediately halted at hearing hushed voices.

Reluctantly stepping near the glass window, she gripped the curtain and slightly pulled it aside enough for her to peek outside.

It was the window that stood on the second floor and gave a clear view outside of the driveway and front lawn.

Under the setting sun's orange and purple hues, the sight below illuminated.

Beside a sleek long black car, the brute's frame stood beside her father's frame as they conversed lightly.

The dignified frame of his stood with his hands folded respectfully on his back, and orbs lowered with a hint of smile playing on his lips proving nothing but a picture of tasteful elegance, like some restrained beast, like a masterpiece of an artist, like the most beautiful lyrics of a song, like the golden hues of sun, like the elegant arch of a rainbow, like the luster possessed by a pearl, like the purity reflected in a dew drop, like an unheard melody and like something too good, too sweet to be explained in mere words.

She saw her father pat his shoulder and he didn't mind it instead even from such a distance, she saw his smile deepen as he respectfully said something back and Shanzay immediately felt something halt in her, come to an abrupt stop, a sudden halt.
Was it her heart that had stopped beating for a moment?

He looked so good, so charming when he smiled.
Why didn't he smile often?

She didn't realize her own lips had curled slightly when the other second the brute raised his head and before the intense cups of his could rise to find her peeking frame, to catch her peeking at him again for the umpteenth time, she immediately turned pressing her back to the wall, letting the curtain go as it went back to covering the window the other second.

Something was thudding so fast, so insanely and crazily fast and loud.
She could literally hear it's buzzing oh so clearly and oh so vividly beside her ears.
A shaky sigh left her lips,
Was it her heart?
